1. Send White down.  Call up Singleton.  Put him in the lineup every day.  If he can't cut it this year, release him and stop wasting the 40-man spot.
2. As soon as Super-2 passes, call up AJ Reed.  No platooning.  Almost every day, he's the DH or 1b.
3. "Carlos Gomez has been designated for assignment."
4. Fiers to the pen.  Feliz takes his slot.
5. Marisnick back to the bench.  Kemp-Rasmus-Springer becomes your regular outfield.
6. Moran is your regular 3b.
7.  Do not wait for the deadline.  If someone is willing to make a good deal now for Rasmus, Castro, Gregerson, Neshek, Feldman... hell, even McHugh or Fiers, then take it.
8. Keep Hinch. There is no sign that this team's problems are managerial in nature.

There are not a lot of positives in Fresno right now, Singleton and Tucker are big disappointments.

That was my angle.  Best case scenario is a couple weeks worth of ABs against AAA pitchers helps him regain his confidence and he can come back and contribute.   If he goes down to AAA and hits 210 with no power, I dont think there is any other choice but to cut him loose.

Are we talking about Singleton?

I never voted for Obama. I was afraid of what America would become under his presidency. However, I have been impressed with what he has actually done. I enjoy having a reduced role as "world police". I now strongly believe that the military spending should be reduced. The "Obamacare" bill has not bankrupted the country. While the rest of the world has been beset with terroristic attacks, we have been, more or less, been kept safe. The economy has slowly improved. Gasoline prices have lowered significantly. Gay marriage is being accepted. I appreciate the Obama presidency even though I consider myself conservative/libertarian. I do concede that race relations have gotten worse.

Any thoughts on who will be the back-up catcher when the season opens? Heinneman looked good today. Gonzalez was so-so yesterday. I don't see a need to trade for a new catcher when you have some depth in this area in the minors, especially when it is just a temporary situation.

Talk Zone / Re: Trade Rant
« on: July 31, 2015, 09:48:09 pm »
The bottom line is that most of the skilled positions are filled with young players who are committed to the Astros for a long period of time.  They are also good at what they do.  Thus, the higher level prospects in the organization are "blocked" from future advancement.  They are, therefore, better used as trade bait. The 2015 draft has left the lower levels of the organization well stocked.  I trust current management to continue to build this way.  I expect that a "waiver" trade is in the future and a competitive team will continue as long as the current management/ownership team is in place.

Villar's defense is unacceptable. Marwin is a much better utility choice and he has enough stick to play that role. Speed on the bases is really the only thing he loses.

I had a  similar situation several years ago.  The truck was in the left turn lane (the road went left or right) and I was going right.  The truck moved into the right turn lane and hit my truck. The police officer explained that I it was a matter of he said/he said.  The truck driver apologized and said his CDL would have been at risk and there was only relatively minor damage to my vehicle and none to his truck.  Maybe there is a bias toward truck drivers.  I don't know

http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2013/01/07/roger-clemens-on-verge-of-taking-active-role-with-houston-astros/

Seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens is on the verge of taking an active role with the Astros.

Clemens, 50, is scheduled to meet Monday with general manager Jeff Luhnow. The Astros plan to open their 2013 schedule to Clemens, allowing him to participate as much as he wants during spring training and the regular season. Owner Jim Crane and pitching coach Doug Brocail are onboard with the move, which would see Clemens take a role he’s often hinted at since retiring in 2007.

Maybe he will be the new Strength and Conditioning Coach.

It was on his second yellow.  Referee was pulling yellow cards when he probably should have been calling fouls.  However, he had done so several times prior to that foul and had called it both ways prior to that foul.  Was he quick on the draw? Probably.  Was it unfair to the German side? No, definitely not.  Both teams should have realized by then that the referee was quick with the yellow card and adjusted their play accordingly. I knew when he committed the foul that a card would come out just by observing how he was calling the game.

Did anyone see the elimination game between ARkansas and Virginia?  Astros' draft pick Dallas Kuechel pitched four innings of relief to get the win.  Ninth inning- bases loaded, one out- gets a double play.  Tenth inning- second and third- one out- two strike outs.  In the twelfth- lead off double- sacrifice to get runner to third- retires the side without allowing a run to get the victory.  Great job pitching out of jams and working around terrible fielding.

It seems to me that the more you limit its use, the less use it is.  The more it interferes with the real action of the game, the more detrimental to the game it is.  In football, you can rule an apparent touchdown not a touchdown and you can continue the game from where they left off.  In a baseball game, you rule an apparent homerun not a homerun and you can't go back.  You take "the game" out of the game.  If Michael Bourne hits one off the top of the wall, just below the yellow line, he is likely to run it into a triple, not a double.  The runners on base are also likely to have scored from first unless the ball was perfectly played.  Once a call is blown in baseball, it is blown.  It might make a difference if the call went the other way, but it is an injustice to the offensive team if it is ruled to be not a home-run.  In short, I don't feel like instant replay will be as effective in baseball as it is in football.  If it is used only to determine homerun or foul it will be used so seldom as to be virtually useless.

Talk Zone / Re: Instant replay savior or sinner
« on: May 29, 2008, 06:30:34 pm »
If it is used to decide home-run balls, what do they do if a ball was ruled a home run by the umpire then over-ruled on replay?  How many bases does the runner take?  What about the runnners that may have been on base?  How far do they advance?  It would still seem to take too much of "the game" out of the game.  I could see it used for safe or out calls more so than home-runs.  Actually, I would prfer not to have it at all.

« on: August 28, 2007, 06:33:57 am »
The team goes on a West Coast trip where they have, in recent years, really struggled.  While there they win two games in LA and played well in the others.  They won two out of three in San Diego.  These were two good teams on the road.  Maybe a run to respectability was in order, especially with a homestand starting off with Washington and Pittsburgh.  Then they get throttled by Washington in three of four and Pittsburgh's vaunted rotation completely shuts down the offense.  I too had to turn off the tube and walk away disheartened.  So, in that sense, I certainly understand the timing, at least with Garner.  I'm still not sure firing Purpura was a good idea.  If that were inevitable, it could have happened in a low profile way after the season ended.

« on: June 07, 2007, 09:53:47 am »
What are some of the reasons Lidge's name is continually being mentioned in trade rumors over Wheeler?  Why is Lidge better trade material?  I, possessing what little info I have, would rather look to trade Wheeler,  especially in light of his moderate success recently as a closer.  This should have increased his relative trade value,  To me, Lidge offers a higher upside, long term as the Astros' closer, in spite of his struggles last season and early this season.  Which would those of you with more knowledge of the team and the game prefer to see kept?

Men's soccer in the U.S. is not going to catch on like it has internationally because of Title IX.  Men's college soccer are programs are being cut and womens' programs added to equalize the number of athletic scholarships.  Young soccer players or their parents realize this and boys quit playing at a fairly early age.  This is fine with me. however, because I have three young daughters who are all very good soccer players.  Boys generally drop out of soccer at around the age that they begin to commit seriously to football, baseball, or basketball.  Thus, the USA women win World Cups and the men seldom win a game in top international competition.

The real thing that you might look for is from a pitching perspective, does the pitcher panic and turn to mush just because they have someone in scoring position, thus making everyone bat better against them cause they become more errattic.

The reason that Tavares' bloop hits and bunt singles are meaningless is because the numbers three, four, and five hitters are making the third out instead of driving in runs.  That is the problem with the Houston Astros.  How many runs have those spots driven in over the last 5 games?  Less than AE I would bet.

1.  Taveras looks like a totally different hitter.  If he continues through the season, the offensewill be hard to beat.
2. This was one of those situations where the "save" belonged to Wheeler rather than Lidge.  Wheeler made the heart of the order look easy while Lidge struggled with the bottom of the line-up.
3. Great clutch hitting and production all the way down the order.
4.  This could be a great year for Astros fans, especially if the young pitching continues to deliver.
Any word on Backe's progress?

Here in central Arkansas, we can get FSSW for almost all the Astros games they carry.  Sometimes they pick up the Rangers feed instead, but the Astros are almost always on the alternate station one channel up (429 & 430 on dish network).  There is no blackout here.  This is surprising given that Arkansas is heavy Cardinal territory and there is no regional sports station showing their games with the same regularity.  Arkansas is often in limbo when it comes to regional sports broadcasts.  Sometimes in the southern region, more often in the southwest.  You should have access to the same games as I do.

I agree.  The strike zone varies from game to game, umpire to umpire and always has.  As an MLB player you have to adapt to it.  The strike zone was high and wide all day for both sides.  What you saw was LaRussa's frustration with the lack of offense by the best offense in the majors and Edmonds frustration at his rapidly rising scapegoat status for the fortunes of said offense.

But Ausmus is your catcher, your scheduled batter.  Viz was a pinch hitter.  You're replacing a pitcher not a catcher when you pinch hit here.  In addition to the intangibles a Bagwell at bat could have brought to the game, Bagwell is the obvious choice if the team needs to drive in a run in the ninth inning.
