House in Munson Out?

Anyone hear a report about Munson being designated for assignment and J.R being called up?

Here it posted on mlb.com Purchased the contract of C J.R. House from Triple-A Round Rock and designated C Eric Munson for assignment.

Well, the current active roster has House on it, while excluding Munson.  I guess it's true then.

Explains somewhat sitting Ausmus for 3 days, other than recovering from catching 27 innings in 2 days.  Lord help them if they need another catcher before callups.

I guess Munson's last home run wasn't enough to save his job.

From Footers article at astros.com, Munson is going to accept the assignment.  But until the Sept. callups House is the backup catcher.  Ausmus leads the league in innings caught and the SOB never gets injured.  Hopefully he'll hold out.  House is a PH.

?House has been on fire,? Astros manager Phil Garner said. ?I will catch him, will use him as a pinch hitter and I might find another way to get him in the lineup. He can swing the bat. We?re looking for the offense, and he?s swinging the bat well.?

Right and Garner has said he's going to use him every 5th day.  Like I said god help them, he's not a catcher.

Neither was Munson, so there's that.

I was hoping that the Astros would find other opportunities for House to get some at bats, like an occasional start at first.  If he's the only other catcher on the roster until the callup, it seems unlikely that we would see him getting any starts at first until then.

Why not start at first base, he could always move to catcher if needed. Wednesday game is a southpaw, if in fact Michalak pitches.

If you're Phil Garner and the opposing manager late in the game brings in a lefty pitcher like, oh... Shouse... and your options for a pinch hitter are: Morgan Ensberg or Jason Lane... what do you do?  Easy, you leave Huff and Scott in to hit for themselves!

So given the scenario just described, what do you think JR House is supposed to provide for Phil Garner?

Actually, as a pinch hitting option, you have to think twice about Wilson.  I was chastised for suggesting Charlton Jimerson as an option last year as a defensive replacement, pinch hitter *AND* occasional pinch hitter with power.  Everyone said he struck out way too much for that last part of the job.

Wilson is very much the same thing.

FWIW, he's cooled off somewhat since his first couple of at-bats as a Jake.  In fact, he's got an oh-fer with 1K to follow the 2-3 bounce, but he does have 2 walks.

Considering the alternative of Lame or Morgan, I think Wilson would be just fine.  Would he have been a better option than the lefty he replaced, that is the question...

I don't think you understand what Lane and Ensberg current role on the team really is.  They're not starters any more.

See how House fits in now?

Do you think the decision was made based solely on what someone would be doing right now?

Wilson is a starter.  You put him on the bench, you're asking for a weaker bench.  His high strikeout rates makes him a bad choice.  As a starter, he's a good player.  But he lost his job, just like Lane and Ensberg, to Lamb, Scott and Huff.

Houston needs a right handed bat for the bench and Wilson was in no way a solution.
