The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Re: Lancaster JetHawks 2016
« on: May 02, 2016, 10:33:26 pm »
Del Rosario back to EST as RHP Andrew Walter was activated from the DL. Walter hasn't pitched yet this season but spent time with the JetHawks last season after serving a 50-game suspension for a "drug of abuse". Signed in 2011 as a NDFA out of Yavapai juco.

Actually, Walter has pitched in one game this year for Lancaster. The game was started on 4/8 and is currently suspended due to rain.  Walter started the game and had a line of 3.2IP 1H 1ER 3BB 6K.

Josh Magee had a good fall for Univ. of South Alabama as a receiver.  He has now been on the squad at three different Univ in Alabama.  Walk on at Bama in 13 (redshirted), UAB in 14 (program shut down), USA in 15.

He spent two years in the Astros org before being released.  I didn't know until I read his football bio that his dad was Wendell Magee of the Phillies & Tigers.

Some may remember Magee for collecting hits in 12 consecutive at-bats during his time with Greeneville. Magee Delivers 12 Straight Hits

ESPN article on whether Puerto Ricans belong in the stateside or potential international draft.

This article leads into a thought I had about undrafted free agents. It seems roughly ten players get drafted from Puerto Rico a year and not too many play at the collegiate level. I would contend there's a number of talented players who aren't getting opportunity to play pro or college ball. The Astros could sign some of these players as UDFAs (any bonus under 100k wouldn't count against the bonus pool.)

From the BA chat:

Quote
Grant (NYC): What led to Hader's omission? He appeared to have a breakout year, especially in the CAL.

Jim Shonerd: Hader was in the same boat as Streich—probably would’ve been ranked around 23-25 if we went that deep. His main thing is deception. His delivery reminds people of Chris Sale’s with how lanky his frame is and how he throws across his body. That helps his fastball play up, working at 88-93 mph, but there’s not really anything plus in his repertoire. His secondary stuff mostly gets 40 or 45 grades on the 20-80 scale. Some guys felt he could end up a reliever. Next year in Double-A should be pretty telling for his future.

I'm not too surprised by Hader's ranking as I got to watch him start a few games on milb.tv after his promotion to Corpus. His secondary offerings were unimpressive. The majority of swinging strikes he induced were from the fastball.

8
Now, his pick in the supplemental round, Kvasnicka, is another matter... other players taken later in that round include Aaron Sanchez (current Blue Jays #1 prospect), Noah Snydergaard (Mets #1), Nick Castellanos (Tigers #1), and Taijuan Walker (Mariners #1 and one of the top pitching prospects in all MLB). Oops.

In Heck's defense, from what I've read it was Tal Smith (surprise surprise) who insisted the Astros draft Kvasnicka (college bat) to mitigate the risk of picking two high schoolers. Heck certainly did a commendable job of starting the Astros rebuild.

Super 2 only refers to first arbitration year.  They'd have to hold him in OKC for most of the year to keep him for an extra year

Here is a good article which explains the nuances of super 2 and gaining an extra year of club control.

Quote
There are many "cheats" to this process that teams use to maximize their control and limit the salaries of players. Since a player must have three years of service time (except in the super 2 case) to be eligible for arbitration, any amount that comes up just short of the three years of service time is not eligible. To have a year of service time, a player must be on the major league roster for 172 of the 183 days of the season. By holding a player who has never played in the major leagues down for 11 days, the team gains close to a full extra year.

If the Astros call up Springer sometime after the 11 days but before the super 2 cutoff, then the team would have an extra year of Springer at the expense of a fourth year of arbitration.

It doesn't say anything about why the Astros have him starting, though. Maybe just to get him more pro innings?

No idea, but he did have four stars next to his name on the draft board that Luhnow posted.

Thanks for the clarification. Looks like all 8 Appy League teams are playing 1 another, so it doesn't seem too unusual.

Chase McDonald has been assigned to Greeneville.

The additions of Holberton and McDonald to Greeneville should really bolster their lineup.

I hate these comparisons.  Appel has a full year on Gray.  I'd love to hear one of the know-it-all's compare Appel of last year to Gray this year.

Appel does have one year on Gray in terms of college seasoning but not in age. Appel is less than four months older than Gray. Their ages on draft day: Appel - 22.03 and Gray - 21.72.

Might the same have been said about Ackley?

I have no idea about this kid, but scouting, or projecting based on stats is so misleading.  But, it appears to have infected so much of the baseball community.

Yeah, some crazy stuff was said about Ackley and Brett Wallace before they were drafted such as 'even if he doesn't develop into a power hitter he will be a threat to win multiple batting titles'. I think it's a little rich to say any amateur player is a sure thing to challenge for batting titles or even hit .300 regularly. It just goes to show you even the most polished college hitters that are guaranteed to hit in the show may very well not.

I think he's from the Houston area. Also seem to remember him having arm problems last year. I guess he's over it.

Sadly, I remembered a Dick Justice article I read a few years ago (LINK) where he states that Cashner contacted the Astros while Cashner was still in junior college.  Cashner told the Astros if they picked him (I would assume in the later rounds, he not a known commodity at the time) he would sign for $175,000.  Purpura (or Drayton) balked at the idea, and Cashner ended up cashing in to the tune of 1.54 million after attending TCU.

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Re: BA Prospect Hot Sheet
« on: August 26, 2011, 12:16:42 pm »
This week's hot sheet features two players acquired in the Phillies trade.  LINK

3. Domingo Santana
Team: low Class A Lexington (South Atlantic)
Age: 19
Why He's Here: .417/.500/1.000 (10-for-24), 8 R, 2 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBIs, 3 BB, 5 SO
The Scoop: The Astros scooped Santana from the Phillies as the player to be named in the Hunter Pence deal, adding a powerful but strikeout-prone bat to their system. The immediate returns could not be better. After hitting seven home runs in 96 games for Philadelphia's low Class A Lakewood club, Santana went deep four times in his first nine games for the Astros' affiliate in the same league. At 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, Santana has massive raw power but plenty of holes in his swing—he's struck out 127 times in 105 games—but Houston got plenty of upside for a fourth player in a trade that injected their farm system with much-needed life.

11. Jarred Cosart
Team:   Double-A Corpus Christi (Texas)
Age: 21
Why He's Here: 0-0, 0.75, 2 GS, 12 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 7 SO, 22/4 G/F
The Scoop: Outside of one disastrous outing, Cosart has pitched like the front-line arm the Astros wanted as one of the centerpieces of the deal that sent Hunter Pence to the Phillies. Promoted from high Class A to Double-A after changing organizations, the Texas native was roughed up in his second start back in his home state, giving up seven runs in 3 1/3 innings on Aug. 7. Other than that, Cosart's been all but untouchable. In his other four Corpus Christi starts, Cosart has pitched 24 innings and allowed all of two runs on 13 hits. While his strikeout numbers haven't been what you'd expect from a power arm, Cosart's been inducing groundouts by the bushel, including 12 in a six-inning start on Wednesday against Midland, the team that hammered him previously.

I dunno. Given how long it took them to bump him from LAN to CC (and, I admit, a baseless hunch of mine), it seems like the current Astros FO doesn't regard him highly.

Christian (Houston, TX): Astros first baseman Kody Hinze is mashing this year. Do you have anything on him? Legitimate breakout or a flash in the pan?

Jim Callis: More of an older guy (age 23) having a career year, helped considerably by Lancaster, though he has hit well in a brief time since his promotion to Double-A. He has some power, but it's his lone distinguishing tool, and he feasts more on mistakes and has trouble making contact against quality pitching. He's also a righthanded-hitting first baseman, and those are fairly easy to find.

Here's what John Klima from Baseball Beginnings had to say about Armstrong in 2009.  LINK

The feeling here is that if Jack Armstrong was in the 2010 MLB draft, we’d be talking about him as a solid 1/1 candidate.  ESPN and MLB PR types would shoot me, but Armstrong is better than Strasburg, and it ain’t even close.  Armstrong hits 96 in this video (twice) with a power curveball, and a great body. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I read that line about not caring about if the guy looks good in blue jeans, too, assuming it was really spoken. But let’s get something clear. This guy is as close to big league ready as there is in the SEC right now.

I don't get the Armstrong tactic. It can be argued that third round is pretty high for a guy who wasn't that stellar last year, was mostly injured this year, and didn't even throw an inning for his team in the CWS (IIRC).  In other words, he was apparently taken that high because he obviously has upside, and going to the cape and demonstrating that he has upside isn't going to change much since the Astros have essentially acknowleged that by drafting him in the third round.
If Armstrong is anywhere close to as good as Klima thinks he is, then he has plenty to gain by going to the Cape.

He is 24 (will be 25 in August) and has been pitching int he minors for 6 years.  He didn't pitch at all last year, so I am assuming he was injured.

I think I read at the start of the season that Cedeno wasn't injured but simply couldn't find a job last season.  If true, that's quite surprising for a lefty with a pulse.

There's a pretty good Tri-City blog, tcvfan, by a Tri-City season ticket holder.  So far he has done an in-depth writeup of every Tri-City home game.  Here's an excerpt from last night's game:

Juri Perez is a guy with great stuff. He was painting the corner with fastballs (in the low 90s, topping the gun at 94 at least three times), sprinkled in sliders (or cutters, it was something with late movement, darting in to the lefties), change ups (in the mid-high-80s), and a beautiful cureball in the high 70s. He could throw the curve for a strike at will, and it didn’t seem fair at all. Hell, my knees were buckling watching the curve come in, and I was sitting down!

Folty's starting to get the hang of this winning thing, getting a W in his fourth straight decision.  Nothing special about his start, but 2 ER over 5 innings should get the job done most days.

He had another pick-off today.  It seems like Folty is averaging one pick-off per game.

ETA : Went through box scores of games that Folty pitched.  He has 7 pick-offs in 14 starts.  Also, all three of his errors are on pick-off attempts.

33
The first thing that pops out to me are the Home/Away splits.  Both Gaston and Clemens' numbers were better at home (especially Gaston) whereas Hinze's numbers are actually better on the road than at Lancaster.  Hinze is also walking at a considerably better rate than either Clemens or Gaston.  I'm cautiously optimistic that Hinze can continue to be successful as he ascends through the minors.

I ended up watching the archive video of Folty's start.  A few observations on Folty.
- works extremely quickly
- has an exceptional pick off move
- threw his fastball the majority of the time and has pretty good control of it
- got a good amount of swinging misses on his changeup
- do not recall him missing a single bat with the curve, he also left it up a couple of times

It's quite enjoyable watching him work on the mound since he works quickly and pounds the lower half of the zone with his fastball.  He got a lot of ground balls.  The only player on Hagerstown that seemed to give him trouble was Bryce Harper.  Harper squared up pitches on his first two ABs (1st AB - laser straight to RFer, 2nd AB - line drive single to right).  Folty nibbled around the plate and ended up walking Harper in his third AB.

This was posted in the same chat, although it isn't anything we didn't already know.

Skrip (Chicago): Thanks for the chat! I am very intrigued by three of the opening day starters, Tyler Skaggs, David Holmberg, and Mike Foltynewicz. BA has talked quite a bit lately about Skaggs, so I won't ask you to go into too much detail on him. Can you tell us more about Holmberg and Folty, their ceilings and what you expect from them this year? Thanks for taking my question!

Matthew Eddy: Skaggs has the highest ceiling and the toughest assignment (Cal League) this season, but as to Holmberg (Pioneer) and Foltynewicz (Appy), you can read more about them in last year's league Top 20s. A quick rundown: Holmberg is a big-bodied lefty with a fringe fastball but good secondary stuff and feel for pitching. Foltynewicz is almost the opposite: a projectable high school righty with arm strength and spotty secondary.

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but what I would call a cutter morphed into what I would call a slider as the game progressed.  Dropped from 88 to 85, with added break.  Much more useful and effective.
It is definitely intentional.  I read an article behind the pay wall at BA the other day talking about how Lyles will slightly change the grip/speed on the pitch depending on the situation.

From today's BA Prospect Chat LINK
Quote
Andrew (York, PA): What are your thoughts on the Astros promoting Jordan Lyles to AAA? Too soon, or does he have nothing left to prove in AA?

Ben Badler: I don't see the argument against moving him to Triple-A. Sure, he's 19, but that doesn't matter. He's already mastered Double-A, so what else is left for him to show at that level?
Quote
James (Whittier, CA): What is Jordan Lyles upside overall? Solid #3 or possibly a number 2 and is he a top 20 prospect overall? Thanks

Ben Badler: He has the stuff to be a top-of-the-rotation starter. He's 88-93 but he locates it incredibly well for his age to both sides of the plate, his breaking stuff has improved to become more usable and his changeup is a swing-and-miss pitch that could be a 70 down the road. You know I'm not crazy about comps, but in some ways, he reminds me of a taller, more athletic version of Jeremy Hellickson.

He could be an asset out of the bullpen if the rotation doesn't work out for him.

But Myers, Wandy, Lyles, Happ, and anybody else who steps forward isn't bad.  There's no clear ace there, but that's a credible pitching staff.  Go Wade go!

If Paulino could stay healthy I would put him with those four.  He has a higher ceiling than any of them.

Ah, right. See Bob, you are not in my mind. In my mind L-a-n-c-a-s-t-e-r does not represent a promotion considering JD Martinez's age, the Jethawks ballpark, and his performance in the Sally League. Thus, when you said promotion, I was thinking only of CC. And that just happens to be where Pellegrini was initially assigned from the GCL. If that makes any sense....

This is exactly what I was thinking.  Martinez's numbers may be even more ridiculous if he got promoted to Lancaster.

Lyles made the Prospect Hot Sheet once again, coming in at number 7.

"An 18-year-old in the South Atlantic League with 139 strikeouts and 32 walks in 117 2/3 innings? No, that's not Madison Bumgarner we're talking about. It's Jordan Lyles, one of the most dominant pitchers in the minors this year. The 6-foot-4 righthander with a free-and-easy delivery and a plus fastball is tied for fourth in the minor leagues with 139 strikeouts, showing why the Astros bucked industry consensus by taking him in the supplemental first round a year ago."

23 homers in 322 at bats sure isn't bad.  Too bad knocking the tar out of the ball was never his problem.  I remember that homer Jimerson launched off of Hamels to break up Hamels' no hit bid.

Talk Zone / Re: Matt Albers sent down
« on: August 08, 2006, 03:45:59 pm »
Like I said, except for the first month of the season, Hirsh has been great.  Jackie Moore said that Hirsh is the most consistent young pitcher he has ever seen.  I think Moore has seen quite a few young pitchers.  I haven't seen Taylor pitch at Round Rock, but I think (from watching his starts with the Astros) he definitely needs to work on his location, especially with his fastball.  He also needs to minimize his mistakes, such as hanging his curveball.  I do think Taylor has top of the rotation stuff, but I don't think a team contending for the playoffs can put him out there every five days and pray that he has one of his spectacular days (which he does have every now and then).  Maybe he makes me sick because he gave up sixteen earned runs in his last 3 starts, and we lost all three of those games.  Yes, I am "Mrs. Hirsch".  How did you figure that one out?

188
Talk Zone / Re: Matt Albers sent down
« on: August 08, 2006, 01:11:30 pm »
Buchholz's last three starts with the Astros were horrible.  His two (or three?) starts in AAA haven't given me any reason to believe he has improved his consistency/command at all while there.  Isn't one of the biggest differences between a major league player and a minor leauge player consistency?  Well, Buchholz has been the epitome of inconsistency this season, while Hirsh has been the consistently good at Round Round (excluding the first month or so).

Well, Hirsh started tonight for Round Rock so he is no longer in the running.  From looking at the box score, it seems as though he through a no hitter through 5 innings until some guy opened up the sixth inning with a solo shot.  I also read somewhere that Sampson was sent back down to make room for Ensberg.  Wandy hasn't looked very good at Round Rock and Nieve has been working out of the pen, so my guess is that the starter will be Albers.

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Pence BP

This is what Baseball America had to say about Pence after watching him take batting practice.

"U.S. team memebers Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks), Josh Fields (White Sox), Alex Gordon (Royals), Howie Kendrick (Angels) and Hunter Pence (Astros) took part in the first group, which was actually not when you wanted to hit. The American team hardly had time to stretch before the quintet hopped into the batting cage, so they were just getting stretched out in their first round or two. Pence stood out the most in the group for several reasons--his shots sounded the loudest and traveled the farthest, and he did it a little differently, with a unique setup. Pence stood in with the bat slightly off his shoulder, then had a slight hand pump as he strided, helping to trigger his fast hands and powerful swing."
