Also means Velasquez, McHugh, and McCullers or Kazmir might start the subsequent Angels series.   We'll get our first glimpse at the 6-man rotation situation with next Thursday's starter.

Maybe something like this starting tomorrow:

Kazmir
Feldman
Keuchel
Velasquez
McHugh

Kazmir
Feldman
Keuchel
McCullers
McHugh

repeat those 10.

I say go tandem!

Kuechy
Mchugh
Kazmir
Feldman
McCullers/Velasquez

Kidding. Mostly.

Folty to go back to work at Low-A tonight.  A bit surprising given the Doran/Oberholtzer promotions and Folty's dominance for the first half of low-A.

ETA:
Tropeano continued his good season with a 2-hit, 3 BB, no runs 6 inning start

When they do promote, they will have a decision to make.

I am not sure I want some of our young arms even seeing Lancaster.

Brownie just said Astros have signed Heineman. Don't see anything on the internets yet.

mlbdraftcountdown has a nice little write up on wha Heineman brings to the table. (I am having trouble linking it!)

He sounds a bit like a left handed hitting Jason Kendall.

I thought I read where Hinojosa was asking for 2.5 million to opt out of UT.   Unless the astros are able to convince a bunch of top 10 round guys to go WAY under slot, or can't sign 3 or 4, I don't think they could offer even 1 million without losing draft picks.   Would be a huge get for Lunhow though.

I wonder what the affect of the proximity of parent club has on signability. Of course it is a case by case basis, but it always seems that the Braves have four or five solid prospects that were picked out of Georgiia high schools in the late rounds. It is as if they target those players as signable only for them. For instance, if a kid (not just talking Hinojosa here) wants 750,000 to turn pro, would he take 375,000 and a promise to pay for his education from his hometown team?

Round 9, pick 279:  Daniel Minor RHP Texas A&M CC

I could not find anything on Minor. He appears to be an undersized righty with an agressive approach. He also went from jc to a&m CC, so he could be a cap friendly pick.

The Pirates' budget is $6,563,500.  If they go over by $328,175 they pay 75% tax on the overage and lose a first round pick.  Of course Boras doesn't care about the Pirates.  The fallout from this new slot system is going to be fun to watch.

It certainly seems to take away a good amount of Boras' power.

Also, how many guys drafted tomorrow will sign for 99,999.99?

You do realize you cant possibly expect Bog's AAA numbers to carry over, right?  And that Bourgeois 39 at bats are not sufficient to base expectations off of.  Not shooting down the platoon idea, but the combined line you've come up with is not what to base your argument on.

I realize that the sample size is small on Bourgeois, and that Bogusevic's AAA numbers won't exactly carry over. But, both of those player's career numbers also suggest a platoon as well. It was just too much work for my lazy ass to combine more than this single season. Sorry.

Why are Carlos' contract and his playing time related?  It's a sunk cost.

Ms. Gardner says that Carlos is a draw. And, if you are paying him, then you might as well get the people in the seats to go along with it.

I don't necessarily agree with the all powerful Pam, but Carlos is going to be out there as long as he is on the roster.

Plus, he has played pretty solid the last couple of months.

If Carlos's contract is somehow off loaded, or at least a portion of it, I would not mind seeing a Bourgeois and Bogusevic platoon.

Bourgeois vs Lefties this season 17-fo-39 for a nice .436/.463/.513 line.

Bogusevic vs righties at AAA 33-for-105 for a .314/.400/.486 line.

That works out to a combined .347/.416/.514 line.

Houser blerb:

http://orioles-nation.com/2011/06/07/potential-orioles-selections-in-round-2/

Quote
Another Oklahoma boy (Bundy, Bradley), Adrian Houser shows more projection than talent at this stage. I feel he has another two gears in him long term. He is long and light in the pants and should grow into a solid starting pitcher long term. He has some feel for a nice fastball in the 92-94 mph range and has hit 96 mph, but is very raw with everything else in his game. I do like his curveball at times, but he tends to throw it way too hard for my taste. If he draws it down a few ticks and moves to a more traditional power curve, it has the chance to be an above average pitch. He has some slight feel for the change up. His mechanics could use some slight cleaning, but I think he is still growing into his body. I suspect that if he were to honor his OU commitment he would be a 1st round pitcher in the future. It is wise to draft and over slot it for him, definitely if he’s available come the 3rd or 4th round.

My understanding is that an optimistic view would be Springer making a contribution no earlier than 2014.

That is my understanding as well. I have a feeling that with his talent/bat speed he could mow through both levels of A-ball next year though. I could see the lower level pitchers not having the controll/polish to give him any real trouble.

I could also see Springer needing some time once he gets to the upper levels and faces guys with more command and secondary stuff.

I could be misunderinterpreting his remarks but the comments from Heck sound to me like he's preparing draft watchers for the eventuality that they may very well not seek a pitcher at 11. Indeed, if the pitching is as deep as is reported this year then I'm with you, if there's a guy who plays middle infield who's too good to pass up, especially if he's particularly young, take him.

In that same vein, it would not shock me if a George Springer showed up either.

Considering the depth of this draft, esp in RHP, if Lindor is at the top of their board when picking then go get him.  There will be other power arms at 69 and maybe even 99.

At 11 in this draft he would be considered a much more talented prospect than Mier was when he was taken at 21 in 2009.  IOW in 2009 Lindor might have been a top 5 or even 3 pick.

Agreed. And, in addition to that, there is also the beauty of taking "up-the-middle" guys. I know it has been said before, but guys with athleticism like Mier, Peredes, Villar, DDS, or Lindor can play all over the field.

It certainly isn't a bad thing to have multiple guys in the system who are performing well AND have the athleticism to play short, second, or any outfield spot. MUCH easier to have an abundance of those types and move them for a corner player, than the other way around. SEE: Goose for Wallace.

BA's "Experts Draft 2.0" (LINK)

11. ASTROS (John): Jim just ruined my fantasy of getting Jungmann at 11. It's disappointing, but I'll find a way to move on by taking Connecticut righthander Matt Barnes. He's the kind of high-upside player Bobby Heck and his staff have focused on in recent years, and has dominated from start to finish in 2011. I could also see taking Sonny Gray, Jed Bradley or South Carolina prep righty Taylor Guerrieri here, but to me Barnes has upside and will get to the majors quickly. With a team as needy as the one in Houston, that should be a consideration when other factors are fairly equal.

Note: BA had Lindor at 8 (Indians), Archie Bradley at 9 (Cubs), and Jungmann at 10 (Padres).

Personally, I would love to see a really really high ceiling guy like Archie Bradley. But, I would be fine with everyone listed in this post, except Lindor. It just doesn't make sense with all the bodies we have collected up the middle in recent drafts/trades.

Funniest play by a CF I've ever seen was when Underpants was learning how to play CF in Round Rock.  There can be some swirling winds inside the park sometimes, so on this night it didn't seem particularly windy, but nonetheless there was enough wind to cause this hilarious play to develop.

This was somewhere in the 8th inning or so, Pence is in CF and the Express are leading by several runs.  However, the opposing team has men on base and their best slugger is at bat.  He hits what looks like a gapper to left centerfield.  Pence hears the crack of the bat, notices the ball is traveling to his right (our left) and he puts his head down and start to run hard... head still down.  He is running and running and running, never once looking at the flight of the ball... he head was firmly looking at his feet picking up turf and laying it down.  My dog does this sometimes, and once he ran right smack into a tree while chasing a flying HEB sack across the back yard.  Back to Pence... I am wanting so much to scream "LOOK UP!!!!", but decide it is best to see how this play turns out.

Well Pence decides he probably has done the fair amount of running to a spot where he thinks the ball will land (as if he has some sort of magical mathematical mind to measure speed, force, distance, wind velocity, and trajectory in his head that no one else has).  He slows down to try and find the ball just as the ball is on it's last few feet from landing.  The problem is, the ball is landing pretty much where Pence has abandoned several yards away.  The bend on the ball with the wind made the ball land somewhere nearer to where Pence was and nowhere near where he now resided.  Had he kept his *eye on the ball* and not his feet, he would have noticed that  he didn't have to run as hard, maybe take several jogging steps from his position over his right.  There was an awkward silence and then some laughter by some in the crowd, me included.  It looked like something out of a Buster Keaton movie.  The ball sitting there on the ground near centerfield with no CF in sight because he was now over in left centerfield gap looking back where he used to be with the "Aw shit!" look on his face.

I had a good laugh at this, but then I began to feel sorrow when think about how the subject individual is now the face of the franchise!

From BA's draft chat today:

Quote
Ryan (Owasso): Jim, I was shocked to hear Astros on Bradley given his contract demands & team's history of signing slot players. Do you think Crane has already told Drayton & Ed to take BPA and he'll deal with the $$$ after the sale is approved?

Jim Callis: Archie Bradley isn't going to get his $20 million asking price, so I wouldn't read into it. I think the Astros are locked in on best player available--they have to be with as bad as their big league club is and as thin as their farm system is. If Bradley is their guy, he's a better prospect than Zach Lee was last year, so he'll get more money (say, $6 million). But the Astros can give Bradley a two-sport contact and spread the bonus over five years, so they might not be paying him more in 2011 than a straight slot bonus would be anyway.

Jim Callis: The stuff is very good. Fastball is 91-93 to 95 mph with good sink, angle and depth, his slider is solid and his changeup has promise. He's the type of guy who can really pitch off his fastball and get lefties and righties out with it.[/i]

As a Texas alum I am probably a little biased, but I keep seeing a lot of similarities between Jungmann and Halladay. The fastball velocity, movement, and command; their size, and even down to the number of letters in their last names!

I'm not sure why so much criticism. He realizes the Astros are in transition, but stills wants a team that could be mildly competitive. I appreciate that.

The idea that he has to trade Wandy, Pence, Bourn, Myers etc. for younger guys is misguided. There is no guarantee that you get shit for those guys. The club in 2013 will be not be drastically changed by what you could get for those guys.  You might as well be watchable in the meantime imo.

For me, I would want to keep the team somewhat competitive for a few reasons.

1) You want to avoid a culture of losing. That culture has taken hold in Pitt. It can be tough to break out of that. It makes it diffiuclt to retain your own players because they see other oportunities as better. It can be tough to add the right free agent for the same reasons. As I think about it, it seems as if the Pirates have overpaid on almost every extension or free agent contract they wanted to give out. If they didn't overpay, they were the last choice for a guy like Octavio Dotel to pitch as a closer because everyone else wanted him as a setup man. You don't want to get into that siduations.

2) Financially, it is much easier to retain individual and corporate season ticket holders if the team is competitive. It is also easier to retain a customer than to replace one. In order to have a good team soon you are going to need a spend some money. In order to spend money you have to have revenue. In order to have revenue you have to have  a product that someone is willing to purchase. In a couple years, when this franchise is really ready to compete again, it would be nice if the revenue streams that were in place when this team had a 100 million dollar pay roll had not dried up. Now, I wouldn't want them to sacrafice the future of the club if it meands winning 72 games as apposed to 68 in 2011, but if you can ad a quality veteran to the mix that can hel; you be competitive and then move him in the middle of 2011, than you would have to consider a few moves like that.

Talk Zone / Re: DraytonBall 2011

You figure that Wandy's trade value is too low in the team's view and nobody wants to trade for Lyon's contract.  Wandy will hopefully be better bait new year.  Surprised Lindstrom isn't getting more talk this deadline.

I agree and think that Wandy's value has been and can be higher, and would like to see them hold onto him for the near future. Assuming you would get a deal similar to the Edwin Jackson deal, would you hold onto Wandy if you knew that you could avoid arbitration and sign him to a three year 21 million dollar deal?

On Lindstrom, it seems to me that relievers in general have not been moved that much this deadline season. Capps was moved, but I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head.

I would be surprised if Myers accepts 8 million for one season after the year he has had. He could easilty get a multi-year deal for that amount. Especsially, if he is just a type B free agent.

41
Good stuff OSF!

I have never understood the average fan's comments about Drayton being cheap. His payrolls have consistantly been in the top third and even the top five in baseball. He has routinely been willing to expand his budget for quality talent at the trade deadline.

Now, if someone wants to argue that the team has not always been wise about how they spent the money, then that arguement can be made. If someone wants to argue that, in the past, the club has overextended on veterans and that cost the farm system, that is fair argument as well. But, the whole Drayton is cheep thing is just plain stupid!

Davis Duren, Oklahoma State - I haven't seen anyone talking about Duren, and that surprises me a little bit. He has good speed, and a developing bat that doesn't show much power, but a knack for contact. That's a skillset that plays well in the middle infield.

I believe his real name may be Andrew Robinson

From BA:

Andrew Robinson, who served as Tech's closer when Jacob was out. He was 4-0, 2.45 with seven saves, though he had a .261 opponent average. His 90-92 mph fastball and slider have been sharper this season. He also has a decent changeup and has proven resilient, working twice on weekends if needed. He should get pick in the 10th-20th round.

Third baseman Kyle Redinger, a Penn State signee, has a lanky 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame with plenty of power potential and athleticism, but scouts agreed that he needs to develop his overall game, which is raw. He could also help the Nittany Lions on the mound.

By the way, this signs like a guy you may have to go over slot for. In addition, I feel that this is the area of the draft that getting more "signable" guys early on could allow you to do some damage on guys who have slipped a little due to signability.

Via Seiler at MLB Bonus Baby (paraphrased): Was widely considered the best Canadian prospect available in the draft, but had a rough spring and had shoulder issues late in the summer.  Could be a mid-rotation started in time.

Speaking of Seiler, he put together a massive prospect guide for this draft and is selling it in PDF format at MLBBonusBaby.com.  Upwards of 750 prospects for $9.95.  Obviously not a ton of info on each prospect (usually 1/2 to 3/4 a page), but more info that I can find on a lot of these folks.  Not a bad deal at all for $9.95 (and given the amount of work he did on this thing, I don't feel 'right' about cutting and pasting everything, but now that I've given him a plug will continue to paraphrase bits of his info...).

I pay no fees for any scripts, so everything I am posting is free. Though, I think BA may be having a software glitch!

Tommy Shirley went 2-7, 7.60 in his first two seasons before emerging this spring as an intriguing lefthander in a draft short on quality southpaws. He throws a heavy 88-91 mph fastball that tops out at 93, using his 6-foot-5, 220-pound frame to leverage his heater down in the zone. He works both sides of the plate with his fastball and isn't afraid to challenge righthanders on the inner half. He has a rough finish to his delivery, landing on a stiff front leg, which costs him feel for his secondary pitches. He's trying to figure out a slider but is a one-pitch pitcher for now. His size and arm strength could get him into the first 10 rounds.

Astros rd. 8 (#243): Jake Buchanan, RHP, 6' 220 lbs, North Carolina State U.

From BA:

Jake Buchanan, who was outstanding in the Cape Cod League last summer, going 3-1, 0.84 with just six walks in 43 innings. He's a pitchability righthander and doesn't have a great pro body at 6 feet, 221 pounds. He commands his fastball well at average velocity, and he ran it up to 93 mph against Georgia Tech in a heavily scouted start against Deck McGuire.

143. Bobby Doran, rhp
Texas Tech
Pitching in the shadow of Chad Bettis at Texas Tech, Doran has been the Red Raiders' best starting pitcher this spring. After going winless in the first half of the season, he won five of his next six starts, highlighted by a 16-strikeout effort against Missouri. His stuff has kicked up a notch, matching what he showed last summer when he ranked as the top pitching prospect in the Jayhawk League. Not only is he pitching at 90-92 mph and topping out at 94, but he's also commanding his fastball to both sides of the plate. He also has a hard 77-78 mph curveball with late break, as well as a serviceable changeup. He's athletic for a 6-foot-6, 240-pounder, and his arm works easily, enabling him to throw strikes. He spent the first two years of his college career at Seward County (Kan.) CC, where the Pirates drafted him in the 36th round last year. He'll get picked more than 30 rounds earlier this time around.

I don't think I'll be available much tomorrow before the first round, so here are my official guesses out of my ass.  Keep in mind the Astros are being very tight lipped.

8. Stetson Allie
19. either Eibner, DeShields, or Austin Wilson depending on availability.
33. Paxton or Solis.

This isn't an official guess as much as it is my feelings/hope:

8. Deck McGuire -- The stros have been tight lipped. This kid has a high floor and should be able to help you soon. He also has pretty good stuff and a little bit of projection left. I saw him on TV and really like his downward plane as the fastball seems to have good life.

19. Allie, DeShields, Sale, Wilson -- I actually like these guys in that order. Though, I really like Wilson, but everyone seems to agree that he is a really tough sign.

33. Cabrera, Workman, Brentz -- I saw Cabrera play on television at some point, but I can't place it. He has tremendous tools. He could play a plus third, plus second, and all three outfield positions. High Risk and high reward type. Workman has been great all season for the Horns. I actually think he has a higher ceiling than McGuire, but he is going to needs some work. His command in the strikezone isn't great with the fastball, but the curve is dominant at his current level.

Later in the draft, I am really interested to see what happens with Zach Lee out of McKINNEY BOYD. Most have him pegged for LSU, but I wouldn't mind the Astros taking a flyer on him in the third. If he doesn't sign than you can get a pretty similar pick for him next year anyway.

If what I've read about Cox's defense is true, the pick just doesn't make any sense.  It's the Smoak scenario redux.

And it seems as if Smoak was considered a better bat at that time!

I am curious about him. His walk rate is above average, but he strikes out a bunch. Does he miss a lot of hittable pitches, a particular type of hittable pitch, or does he have a particular weakness for breaking balls in the dirt?

I don't pretend to be an expert, but here is how I see him. Legit power that pitchers do fear. Because of that, he is going to get a lot of extra base hits and walks. I think he will have plenty of extra base hits because of his natural power and because he hits a lot of mistakes. At the AA level pitchers try to nibble on him and he draws a lot of walks. With this approach to facing him, pitchers are aggressive with him if they are forced to because of a game siutation or falling behind in the count (something that happens regularly becuase of their aforementioned tendancy to nibble with him at the plate). It is almost as if pitchers double cross themselves by trying to be carefull, then falling behind, and then being forced to throw somthing over the heart of the plate.

If he expands his zone he strikes out a lot. He does not have the best two strike approach and there are some holes in the swing. On top of that, he doesn't really have a position. I don't think he will be a consistant enough hitter to stick at 1b or LF, but he could be a unique utility player for you. He could be a guy that can backup first, third, left field, and be an emergency third catcher. He would also bring plus power to the table for a bench player.

Ultimately, I think he is a little bit tougher to project because of his set of skills. Will pitchers at the Major league level fear his power? I don't think so. Therefore, his approach at the plate may have to change. It is a little tough to tell.

Scuttlebutt over at TCB is that in an interview with Matt Thomas, Wade said the draft budget will between $8.5 and $10MM...anyone over here hear that? IIRC, that's way more than previous years, assuming it's accurate. Makes me think they might actually take a run at some like Wilson...though my gut feeling is that a lot of that money will be used to take HS guys over slot in later rounds.

I wonder how much those numbers could be adjusted if, over the next few days, Uncle Drayton decides to pull the plug on this season? Would those number go up a couple million if you knew you were going to be trading Oswalt, Myers, Sampson, ect.?

If you did move a guy like Oswalt, wouldn't it be nice if you could turn around to your fans and tell them we are going to use this money by investing heavily in the draft, international signings, and player development?

A (Dave Perkin - BA): I hear they like Chad Lewis a great deal.

BA had Lewis at 115 in their top 200.  LINK

Chad Lewis, 3b, Marina HS, Huntington Beach, Calif.
Prototype third baseman who just needs to make some refinements at the plate.

It will be interesting to see if where they take a young man like this. He doesn't fit the clubs up the middle MO of the early early rounds, but rounds 4-5 could be interesting!

IMO Ranaudo was looking at end of round 1/supp 1 before last night.  He's clearly recovering and last night's performance moved him up to 19 consideration.  I don't know how many more starts he'll get before the draft, but if they're this good he could go before 19.

I am asking this because I have no idea.

How much information does the organization obtain in terms of medical records on the players. Is it like the NFL where the team docs examine darn near every player's records before the draft. This would seem to be quite a painstaking/costly process for something the size of the baseball draft. Does the organization simply rely on the statements of the player, his parents, handler/agent, and coach?

Also, the Astros take in the game and speak to one Robby Rowland, a 6'6 prep pitcher from Cali with a low 90's fastball. He also had a successfull basketball career. That would certainly fit the club's MO!

I think Cox is wrong.  Wade has professed a desire for speedy middle infielders.  IIRC, that one reason he went after Matsui.  If they project Cox as a 3b, then maybe.  Though I still think they're hoping for a college arm.

I completely agree, unless a big right-hander from just up I45 is available. I think you have to pull the trigger and make a splash.

you are a star-struck dreamer. Pam, is that you?

Not exactly a star struck dreamer. Pence is going to be a streaky guy because of his makeup. His talent is not in question. He is going to have periods where he looks great. He is going to have periods where he looks like crap. Over the course of a six month season, I think his numbers will be solid for a corner outfielder. Now, I am in no way arguing that he is a great player or even an all-star. I do think he has that talent in him and I understand the frustration that many have with him due to the untapped talent, but I seriously doubt he will ever be more than a slightly above average player; but he IS a slightly above average player.

I didn't see it that way at all. The pitch he hit was a slider away and he happened to turn on it just in time to hit it well enough that it went deep, by inches. He's still quick enough with the bat to hit a mistake hard but I thought last night's HR was more of the blind hog finding the acorn. What's he doing trying to pull a slider away anyway? That's definitely not progress as a hitter.

I'd love to be wrong. He's talented enough to survive at the major league level on his ability but the frustrating part is that he has so much talent that seems to be just a tick shy of coming together. If he doesn't add development in the mental part of his game then he's topped out and survival will last for a couple years or so. If he can put it together, he could be a special player for several years.

First, we are talking about two different at bats. I am talking about the at bat in the 7th when he doubled. You are correct that he did pull a breaking ball away for his HR in the ninth. But, I had not seen Pence handle a good fastball and a breaking ball on back to back pitches like he did in the 7th yet this season.

My opinion on Pence is that he is so talented that he is going to have hot streaks. But he doesn't play within himself enough to avoid slumps either. I just think that what I saw from him last night could be the beginning of one of those hot streaks.

I liked what I saw from him last night at the plate. The fastball he hit foul in the 7th was probably the hardest hit ball from this team all season. The very next pitch was a curve (albeit a bad one that backed its ass up into the happy zone, beyonce style), but he stayed back on it and drove it. The way he handled those back to back pitches is a good sign IMO.

Does anyone know where to find a scouting report on him?

Here is a bit of a summary of scouts opinions from BP. It looks like the organization may have dusted their, previously lost, big boy pants off and committed some serious cash to a prospect:

Scouts look at Batista’s projectable frame (6’1, 170) and smooth switch-hitting stroke and mention Carlos Beltran Beverly Hills Cop III full movie , seeing possibly 20 home runs annually coming down the road. They mention his speed, glove, arm, and footwork are all solid, allowing you to easily project him as a shortstop at higher levels. One even noted that he looks like Derek Jeter in the face (the version that was a good defensive shortstop, no doubt). This type of five-tool talent gets well over the $150,000-$300,000 bonus range I referenced in the prior article. After consulting some sources, it appears Batista already has multiple offers over $500,000 on the table, and there is legitimate chatter that he will get over $1 million when all is said and done. The Dodgers, Rangers, A’s, Indians, and Yankees are believed to be the front-runners.

You're referring to the maximum salary reduction, which is 20% of the previous season or 70% of the previous two seasons.  The maximum salary reduction does not apply to arbitration between a free agent and his former club.  The club could theoretically offer as little as the league minimum.  However, it's basically unheard of for a player to get a reduction in arbitration, and in the case of a Type A free agent, an All-Star, he should expect at least a 20% raise.  I can't imagine Tejada being awarded less than $15MM in arbitration, quite possibly as much as $18MM.

Thanks, I didn't have time to look up the specifics. In any case, my point earlier in this thread was that I didn't think  Tejada would be offered because he stood to make WAAAAY too much if he accepted.

Talk Zone / Re: Elias rankings
« on: August 10, 2009, 12:51:32 pm »
I was thinking Valverde would be the only one they'd offer, precisely because he's the most likely to get a long-term deal paying him more per year than he's earning now.

I would think Hawkins would get offered as well. If he is a type A, the team would get two picks as compensation. If he is a Type B, he is more likely to decline and get more money from another team. If he were to accept, you get a solid setup man who can close for you for about 3 million or so (rough estimate of what he would make in arbitration).

71
Talk Zone / Re: Elias rankings
« on: August 10, 2009, 12:47:25 pm »
I'll offer the very tiny amount that I (think I) know about arbitration/FA compensation. A player's salary cannot be reduced by more than a small % through arbitration, and in almost all cases, will stay the same or go up. Therefore, if the Astros offered, and Tejada accepted, he would almost certainly be awarded something close to his 2008 salary (around $13 mil). Given the blow the FA market has taken with the economy, it seems unlikely that Tejada, despite his success this year, would get anything close to $13mil/year on the open market, so he would almost certainly accept arb if offered.

I think the percentage you refer to is 25%. That is off the top of my head.

MLB Trade Rumors just put out their estimates of the Elias free agent rankings.

Relevant Astros:
Type A - Tejada, Valverde, Hawkins
Type B - Pudge, Brocail

I think it's pretty clear that they will non-tender Brocail, but they should offer to all three type A guys.

I respectfully disagree on Tejada. If you offer and he accepts, than he is going to get something close to 10 million for 2010. I would not want to pay that much for him at this point. I think his value is closer to the 5-7 million dollar range.

73

So, do you pull whiney Ortiz here?  How much is enough?

I say you make him stay out there and finish this game. Then, when he comes off the mound after the 8th, don't say a word, shake his hand, and let him find the red tag in his locker all by himself.

Matsui saves the day, beating Kershaw to the bag for the force out at second. Side retired.

Also, Pudge made a strong throw to Tejada with one out and runners on the corners for the second out on Kershaw's sac bunt attempt.

Astros 4, Dojers 3 Bottom 4th

Going back to that inning. I was thinking. In a situation where you have first and third, a pitcher clearly trying to sacrifice, and both corner infielders charging; would anyone else walk the left fielder in and have him cover third? (short woulc then cover second and second cover first)

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Re: 2008 Pre-Draft Thread
« on: June 04, 2008, 09:16:35 am »
A few things:

1) I really like Crow and hope he falls to Houston. I would take him #1. I like him that much. He has been as good as any college pitcher, he has a top of the rotation arm, and he still has a decent amount of upside.

2) I know it is impossible to predict but I like to think about who the Astros could be targeting at 38, 56, 88, 109, 122, and 152.

At 38, Ross Seaton makes a lot of sense. BA has him rated as the 28th best prospect in the draft. But signability could make him drop to 38. At that point the hometown team may have a better shot at signing him than other teams. He also hits that mark on what the Astros are looking for; starting pitching. There also seems to be some conversation going on between the Astros and Seaton.

At 56 it gets interesting. You could see Daniel Schlereth available at this point! That would be much better value pick that if they are considering him at 38 or, GASP, 10! But there is also this crazy idea that I cannot get out of my head. Tanner Scheppers falls all the way to this point due to his injury concerns and the Astros take a flyer on him. Is that nuts, or is this draft too important for the Stros to take an injury risk in the top three rounds?

At 88, the Longhorn in me would love to see Jordan Danks come off the board to the good guys. I hope he doesn't get taken at 87 by the White Sox. Danks fits the up the middle toolsy athletic profile that the club seems to be targeting. His power has not developed like some would have hoped, but I still think it will come. He has gained very little weight since he has been on campus at Texas and the Disch does not do a power hitter any favors. So maybe he projects as more of an average/doubles hitter with speed on the basepaths and in the outfield instead of a slugger. Is that such a horrible thing? Tyler Ladendorf would not be a bad selection either; if available. I have not been able to see him play, but the people I have had conversations with (granted these are not experts) say that the most prominant player whom he seems to look like is Derek Jeter.

At 109, it would be nice to see Austin Dicharry. He is rated higher than this but he is committed to Texas and could fall due to signability concerns. The Astros would be the home town team and could get a shot at signing the young man. I have seen him pitch and he has the best overall package of stuff, projectability, poise, and pollish that I have seen in my area of town since Troy Patton.

At, 122, I like Adam Smith from Klein High. He fits the bill of what the Astros seem to be targeting as a toolsy, projectable, up the middle guy. He is an impressive athlete if you see him play and is one of those long muscle type of guys that does everything smoothly.

At 152, Kyle Russell, from Texas would be a high risk/ high reward type of player. In the fifth round you could look at a guy with a lot of strikeouts who has struggled during the summer with wood bats, or you could see a guy with a lot of strikeouts, a high onbase%, GREAT power, and seems to remind you of a more fluid athletic Adam Dunn.

I know these are a lot of local products, but with the Astros eyeing signability as a key factor that might not be a bad way to go. This is also just pure speculation with a little hope mixed in.

3) Saito is an intriging arm. He is not rated in the top 200 by BA so he would seem to be the type of pitcher the Astros should take a look at in rounds 7+; guys that have high ceilings that could turn out to be real steals of the draft.

Wandy is very likely, but I also think that Backe could be someone Ausmus could really help. Both of those guys seem to be a little high strung at times.

Very nice work. I have a couple of comments/questions:

1) Has anyone heard anything about Fernando Nieve's recovery and when we might see him back in regular action at Roundrock or in Houston?

2) This may seem out of the blue, but I like the Jarred Ball signing as a MLFA. He has good speed, decent pop, is versatile and solid defensively, has a reputation as gamer/grinder, and is just 24. He was, at one time, considered the top CF prospect in the Diamondback's system. Of course, the D-Backs then went on and signed Justin Upton and traded for Chris Young. Ball had a really nice 2004 in high A ball. He had a slow adjustment period in AA during the 2005 season but put up really nice numbers in the AFL that year, but ended up injuring his knee and having surgury late in 2005. The surgury cost him most of 2006 where, in just 20 ABs, he hit just .192. In 2007, after just 20 ABs in in 2006, it took Ball a while to put things together, but after the D-Backs decided to go really young at the mlb level he was moved to AAA. The move coinsided with Ball getting his feet back undernieth him again against top competition and he hit .346 with a .397 OB% in about 6 weeks. He should be in CC to start the season, has anyone else heard anything on him?

On a side note, his sister was REALLY REALLY hot in high school.

If somebody can think of something that makes less sense than that, I want to know about it. Lane hit .198 against lefties last season!
