Rojo Johnson?
« on: May 04, 2010, 10:36:24 am »
Anyone know anything about this Rojo Johnson guy Farmstros is blogging about?
http://farmstros.blogspot.com/

I imagine the Astros -- and perhaps RR, too -- could use some bullpen help.

ETA: Now I see the Express website has something up, too.

That link makes it sound more like he might be joining the Rangers org, as opposed to joining the RR or CC teams:

Quote
Recently, Texas Rangers President and Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan was asked about the legend of "Rojo" Johnson.

"Sure, I've heard of him," Ryan said. "He's quite the story, that's for sure. We'd be interested. No doubt about it. Quality pitching is pretty tough to come by these days. We might have to go after him just to keep someone else from snagging him up."

The Rangers are still hamstrung financially. I don't know if that would allow budget for signing him. If the sale is not approved before the draft they may be in some trouble.

Sounds like a character from a Joe Lansdale pulp novel.  If he were Cuban, he'd command $8 MM to sign...

I was thinking ROJO sounded a bit like Billy Mumphrey.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I haven't read such hype and hyperbole about a guy I've never heard of since Sid Finch.

He has signed with Round Rock.

Here is the Round Rock press release.  LINK

It begins: "Round Rock Express founder and CEO Reid Ryan announced Wednesday that the Round Rock Express have acquired Billy Ray "Rojo" Johnson. The right-handed pitcher will be in uniform for Thursday's 7:05 p.m. CDT game against the Nashville Sounds."

The bold part has me a bit confused.  The Express can acquire players on their own?  Or should it have read, the Astros have acquired...

That is what has me curious.  Is there any such thing as being under Round Rock control without being under Astros control.

Ryan said he was interested in him. Could he have bought him with he intent to sell him to the Rangers if he works out? Could be a way to get around the Rangers cash crunch.

Can't imagine there is not a rule, clause, etc. to prohibit this type on tomfoolery...  As a fan, I wouldn't be real excited about the Rangers using an Astros farm team to give Rangers prospects seasoning and playing time.  I would imagine that Ed and Tal would be even less excited about it...

This used to happen all the time back in the old days of baseball. Not sure when it changed but ML teams would buy players from the minors. That was before MiL teams had strong affiliations with clubs but it was commonplace.

Pretty sure this has something to do with it...

Yeah, the more I think about this, the more I'm convinced it's a gag.

I've been called an idiot my fair share in the past, and earned it many more times than that, but to fall for some kind of dumbass Will Ferrell publicity gag?  Just fucking shoot me now.

According to wikipedia, we were had (at least I was.)... Rojo Johnson and Will Ferrell are one in the same. Damn, I was just telling the wife, "someone should write a book about this crazy son of a bitch."

Anyone heard anything about the Timberlake movie... the one where he played for the Hooks?

The Open Road was released in August 2009 per IMDB.  Other than that, not a clue...

Is there some point to this?  Is it part of a film, or just Ferrell continuing his slide to...whereever the hell he's going.

Ferrell is in town promoting a charity golf tournament. I believe the money goes to cancer research.

He's trying to create some hype for the season finale of Bitch Hunter.

My brother in law was one of the Round Rock cops guarding him at the game.  He said that after Will Ferrell came off the field he was huffing and puffing and said he was horribly out of shape.
