This team is just bad. I thought about writing something good about each player but decided I did not want to spend the whole night trying to come up with something for each player.

The theories as to why they are bad do not really matter. At this point, they are bad. Managing, starting pitching, hitting, relief pitching and fielding have all had their moments in the Astros suckitude this season.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago, when leaving an Astros game I was not as upset as I have been in the past after a loss. It took me a day or so to realize it is because I do not expect this team to win. My expectations for them as a team are probably higher for them than what they have for themselves.

But enough about my feelings. There are players that seem to have improved this season and they do make the games worth watching (besides it being baseball). Michael Bourn and Hunter Pence. Both of them have made improvements in their play. I’m happy for them, but it only seems to be upping their trade value at this time.

Astro highlights from the game:

Rodriguez’s double in the third to score two. I have to admit, I thought the Astros weren’t going to score at all.

Bourn’s catch in the bottom of the fourth inning was outstanding. Bourn’s catch at the wall.

Keppinger’s homerun.

Edwin Maysonet’s first RBI.

LaTroy Hawkins pitched a scoreless 8th inning.

Bench Tidbits:

The Pittsburgh Penguins are waiting to play the Detroit Redwings (not yet time for the Chicago Blackhawks) in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals.

(Un)earned loss in Cincy

It is axiomatic that good teams find ways to win games, and bad teams find ways to lose games.

It is clear into which category the 2009 Houston Astros fall.

8, yes, 8, unearned runs led to an 8-5 loss to begin the Astros’ road trip. Losing the first game of a road series is nothing unusual, but the manner in which the Astros accomplished this was the real story. Despite a 2-run cushion courtesy of Berkman’s typical GABP HR, the “Good Guys” went out to give it back, and then some. Miggy led things off by booting a routine grounder from Taveras, and the floodgates opened, figuratively and literally. Wandy had absolutely no command of his curveball, and after getting to 2 outs with 2 runs, Eny was unable to record that elusive third out, including an RBI single from Harang.

From there, the only question was when CB Bucknor would decide to call the rain delay. Strangely, he allowed things to proceed to 2 out in the 5th with one pitch already thrown to Pence. I suppose it’s not completely unheard of for an umpire to call the delay one out short of making the game official, but I can’t recall seeing it before. Even more unusual was Dusty Baker’s decision to risk his starter by bringing him back out for all of two batters after a two hour rain delay. (What am I saying? It’s Dusty Baker, a man with no regard for his starters’ arms.)

I’ll spare you the other sordid details of Q throwing a ball into the photo booth while trying to pick Hairston off of first, or Miggy forgetting to touch the bag on a DP. Rather, let’s leave this where we started: bad teams find ways to lose games.

Astros Recap
Yahoo Recap

Derek Holland, pitcher for the Rangers, did a pretty dog-gone good job against the Astros Friday night. Allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in 5.2 innings of work. The kid is pretty good. Felipe Paulino, started for the Astros and he went 5.1 innings giving up 4 runs on 7 hits. Both starting pitchers did well, but once Paulino hit the magic number of 100+ Cooper yanked him out of the game and let the bullpen take over from then.

Jason Jennings came into the game in place of Holland, I was hoping he give the Astros some of the runs he gave up a couple years back when he was an Astro. And he did, the two he gave up just weren’t enough on the night.

Michael Bourn, Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee all had pretty good nights at the plate. Bourn seems to be handling the pressure of leading off games ok so far. Berkman seems like he might be finding his confidence again. And Carlos gets to stay in just long enough to be substituted and missed later in the game.

Overall, the this was a game the Astros could have won, but didn’t. It was another game where 5 pitchers were used. Nothing new in that.

Bench Tidbits:

Michael Bourn leads the National League in stolen bases. Run Baby Run.

Tonight’s test was a frustrating one. Roy gave up 10 hits, the most since late last season but held a 3-1 lead when he handed over his 1st-and-2nd-1-out jam in the 7th to Jeff Fulchino. Roy had gotten out of his own trouble all night, surviving 2 bases-loaded-1-out innings allowing only 1 run. Fulchino plunked Braun, then Byrdak gave up a 2-run double to Fielder, then Sampson gave up an RBI double to Hart. The Astros ended up dropping the series finale with the Brewers, 4-3.

The real highlights of this game though were the 4 SnSers behind the plate. I couldn’t pass up the chance to weave them into this recap. Let’s go!

No sign of the guys at the 1st pitch.

They missed Penis Face Dick Nose's 2-out triple but were there in time to see Lard Ass K.

The Good Guys got on the board in the 2nd with a single by Lee and the a bomb by PENCE!!! against the wall in center. They added another in the 4th on Miggy’s solo tater against the left center field wall.

One of Roy’s jams was in the 5th when he gave up a lead-off double that was erased on a FC, then 2 singles to load ’em with one out. Roy got the ground ball to Blum who got it to Kepp in time for the out at 2nd but the throw to 1st was too late and the run scored. 3-1 Astros.

The bottom of the inning was wild. With 2 out, Twinkie singled and Lee walked. PENCE!!! then singled to left and Lance raced around 3rd and reached home as Kendall gloved the ball. Lance slid south of the plate and appeared to get his hand down on the only open spot of the plate before Kendall made the tag. Let’s see what our guys think:

The call....?

The call....?

SAFE!!!

SAFE!!!

Nope. Delfin Colon saw it differently. You tell me. Who has the better angle?

Lance went uncharacteristically apeshit and Colon wasted no time in tossing him, and then when some old guy who kind of looked like a manager came out and started yelling, he got tossed too.

I explained how the game got away up top. It sucked. But I did want to leave you with this moment of zen:

"Man, look at that guy behind home plate..." -JD
