Sheets happen, losing skid now at four games

Brewers 4 – Astros 1

Box Score

The Astros have been scuffling on offense lately and on this night they would have to face Ben Sheets to try and break out of the offensive funk. That’s a lot to ask of the Houston nine since Sheets is a premiere pitcher when he’s on. He was on and the Astros were made to look very meek by the power pitcher from the Bayou.Read More

Video: Final Play of the Game

Traditionally, what is considered a dramatic finish to a game is an offense induced walk off play. If it is a homerun, there is supposedly no other more fan craze inducing play, plus the players get to wait at home and pound the crap out of the teammate who hits said walk-off homerun. It’s a ritual often looked forward to by players and fans alike.

But what do you do when you win with a defensive play? What if said defensive play is a dramatic as can be, not often executed as well, double play?

You know, sometimes the convergence of the perfect storm is a marvel to behold… unless you’re the one stuck in the middle of the hard blowing wind, torrential rain, the flood waters and you’re seeing your brand new HD television with stereo system floating away down the middle of the street. When you’re sitting on top of your rooftop, you get to think a little, especially why in the heck anyone would think this is fun. I know, Wah Freaking Wah!

Well the major league baseball equivalent of a perfect storm that will just rain on anyone’s parade is Interleague Play and Angel Hernandez and home plate umpire duty. Read More

Notes on the Nature of Competition from a Non-Athlete

Posted on May 5, 2008 by Noe in Austin in From Left Field

Submitted by Joey Trum

My dad didn’t like baseball while I was growing up. It being the 80’s and him being a very 80’s type of businessman (Porsche driving, polo wearing, Reagan-loving Houstonian), he was more attuned to the growing white-collar hipness of the NBA than the old-fashioned nuance offered by MLB. Sure, he was an Astro bandwagon jumper in ’86 like everybody else, but overall he had a certain disdain for the sport that I’ve never understood. And the result of this disdain that is most relevant to this story is that I grew up playing basketball. Not just playing basketball, but absorbing everything about it. I was one of those kids who routinely stayed up late to watch random Big West teams complete ESPN’s Big Monday college basketball triple header, who went to the half-full Summit at every opportunity to watch the parade of lackluster complements to Akeem the Dream. I went to Pat Foster’s Cougar basketball camp 4 years in a row, and even went to the one at Rice a couple of times (Tommy Suitts?).Read More

Astros 6 – Brewers 2

AP Recap

There is an old joke that kinda goes like this:

Q: How do you know God loves baseball? A: Because His first words in the bible were “In the big inning…”

The Houston Astros used the big inning to down the Milwaukee Brewers on this night by the score of 6-2.Read More

SpikesnStars.com debuts on 1560 The Game Radio

Posted on April 30, 2008 by Noe in Austin in SNS

In a hysterical… errr… historical moment for this fansite, SpikesnStars has been invited to partner with 1560 The Game as another addition to their ample stable of team fansites in and around the Greater Houston Area. We’re certainly not the first nor the last fansite that 1560 The Game provisions a radio segment to in order to take the pulse of the everyday fan of a local team (Rockets, Astros, Aggies, Horns, Dynamos, Comets… Comets?)… but we intend to be one of the best. If not in the minds of others, certainly in our own minds. Which of course is usually all that matters to us any way. That and good beer and donuts, but I digress.

By the way, I find it odd someone would think it is a good idea to ask you freaks what you think… but I digress again.Read More
