Struggle Continues, Astros lose

When a player is struggling at the plate, it seems every strike called is of the borderline kind of strike, every ball hit hard is right at someone and even when it seems you’re going to get a knock, someone makes a great play (more on this in a little bit). When a pitcher struggles, every borderline strike is called a ball, every routine play behind you is misplayed and no one seems to be able to come up with any sort of outstanding play at a crucial moment to bail you out. When a team is struggling, all things come into play and it can make for some frustrating baseball.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the struggling Houston Astros, April 2008.Read More

Beautiful Day, Astros Win!

It’s a beautiful day
Sky falls, you feel like
It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away

Houston Astros 5, Florida Marlins 0

Read it in the GameZone!

At the beginning of the televised broadcast of the Florida Marlin/Houston Astros game, there was a very picturesque shot of Minute Maid Park in all it’s splendor basked in the sunlight of what can only be termed a beautiful day in Houston, Texas. Of course, this was to be technically a night game between the two clubs, but let’s not quibble. The opening shot gave rise to a tagline in the broadcast graphics that read “Chamber of Commerce Day”, meaning if the Houston CC ever needed a day to point out the wonderful weather in Houston, this would be it. Of course, knowing Houston baseball fans as I do, this was the one or two days of the season that the roof is opened and no one complains about being too hot or too cold or too whatever! Bleacher Rap Writing Like There Is No Tomorrow

Editor’s note – This article originally appeared on AstrosConnection.com on October 23, 2001.

The other day I was wondering if one could channel the same spirit that invades columnist John P. Lopez of the Houston Chronicle to write a Bleacher Rap. Then I wondered why one would want to. Yeah, what’s so good about writing a column or article chock full of my own opinions, conspiracy theories and paranoia’s all rolled into one. Well come to think of about it, this could be fun in the trying to park a M4 Sherman Tank in a compact car parking space sort of way. You can do it; you’re just going to have to accept that you’re going to have to squash, maim, destroy, push, run over and generally stomp a few things along the way to gain your objective. Damn the destruction, full speed ahead, let’s see what a Lopez-like diatribe? err? column about the media and all it’s foibles in the current Astros situation might read like. Here goes, my try at satire (from a bunker somewhere in the hills of central Texas):Read More

A Season of Dreams

Editor’s note – This article originally appeared on AstrosConnection.com.

“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball…”

So there we were, the typical American family, spending the Labor Day holiday as most families should. Relaxing. The wife was with the four-year-old, talking about tomorrow’s school day. It is an exciting time in his life as he is starting Pre-K early, and a less than epic time for this father, who fears that this is just another indication that time is passing by too quickly . “Why can’t they stay babies” I think, going back to what I was doing, playing with my five-month-old son in the living room. Unbridled laughter that comes from a baby is unexplainable, it must be experienced to be understood. Oh, and true to the American tradition, the television set is on.Read More
