Big Hair and Silver Boots

Posted on June 16, 2009 by BudGirl in Game Recaps

Astros 1, Rangers 6
Astros lose the battle for the Silver Boot.
W: Kevin Millwood, L: Wandy Rodriguez

Astros Recap
Yahoo Recap

Astros highlights:

Congrats to Ivan Rodriguez for his record catching game. Hopefully tomorrow you will get a win for your record breaking game. And may you hit a homerun in that one also.

I’m glad Michael Bourn is still batting lead-off. He has been doing a good job at that role. Minus the “stolen base” attempt in the first, he does what I want out of a lead off hitter.

Alberto Arias did a good job in relief going 3 innings of scoreless baseball. That, young man, is an excellent way to help your team. Tim Byrdak pitched the 8th without giving up any runs.

Rangers highlights:

Ian Kinsler hit two homeruns off of Wandy in the first inning then in the second inning, got a walk for his third plate appearance. Wandy might want to consider just tossing a softball pitch at him so he doesn’t have to waste a good pitch on him and limit the damage to one base the next time he pitches to him. Ian went 3 for 4 on the night. I hope Russ Ortiz and Mike Hampton keep him off the bases.

Kevin Millwood was the Cy Young pitcher this game. Seems like the first pitcher the Astros face in a series is good enough to win the Cy Young that game. He only gave up 4 hits in 7 innings of work. Of course, the Astros helped him a bit.

Game Analysis:

I have to say that the Astros offensively did not look ready to play this game. I do not think the best defense was out there. Nothing against Darrin Erstad, but when was the last time he started a game? Glad he’s getting the work. Kaz Matsui looked rusty also.

I am also going on the record saying Wandy Rodriguez is not an Ace. This team doesn’t really have one. Every pitcher has to deal with umpires that don’t necessarily make the calls you want or deserve. You have to pitch through it. Hopefully he does better in his next start.

Hunter Pence hopefully does a better job showing off for his peeps than he did in this game. I’m assuming that his peeps were there since he is from Arlington, Texas.

It is hotter than Hades in the Arlington area. Apparently there is nothing to do during the day. Boot be dammed. Maybe I could blame the heat, or the day off, or even the pressure of winning the Silver Boot for Drayton, as a reason for this team losing but I will not. I have not exactly made it a secret that I do not have a lot of faith that this team will do their second half magic as they have for the past 5 years. I’ll even go out on a limb and say the Astros get swept this series. They’ve been doing good for the past 5 series, but they just haven’t really shown me anything making them seem like they are turning a corner.

Bench Tidbits:

You want to know the best way to watch this game? Go work out after work. Run a couple errands, change the shoe strings in your tennis shoes, cook dinner, take a shower. Then sit down and watch the game in fast forward. Any special moments needed to pay attention were highlighted in the Gamezone.

Who cares about the Rangers?

Posted on June 16, 2009 by Andyzipp in Columnistas, Off Day

off-day-largeAfter winning 5 series in a row, your Houston Astros are still in last place.  But with momentum. I guess.

It may just be me, but I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop with this team.  Maybe it’s the sudden rash of injuries, or the fact that the current run has been against some of the worst teams in baseball.  Maybe it’s that the manager isn’t really skilled at his job or that there just aren’t that many good pitchers in the rotation.  Maybe it’s the pin-striped uniforms or the lack of edible foodstuff at Mandatory Concessions Park at Union Station.

Anyway, the team is in, according the schedule, Texas to play the Rangers in a series that has no meaning what so ever, (outside of wins and losses), shiny footwear be damned.  I know we go through this every year, but Interleague play is just a bad idea.  Besides forcing fake rivalries down the throats of the baseball watching public, besides the competitive imbalance it creates, besides the “rotation” that has brought the Red Sox and Yankees to Houston exactly once in the 13 years while setting up crucial series Kansas City and Minnesota season after season, the whole is flawed because of the one difference between the American and National leagues…the designated hitter.

When the Rangers traveled to Houston a couple of weeks ago, they crushed the Astros, sweeping them and racking up 17 runs to the Astros’ 8.  The Rangers, because there’s no DH in the Senior Circuit, were forced to “shuffle” their line up by choosing to play either Hank Blalock (.251/.294/.529) or Michael Young (.316/.359/.500) at 3rd.  On a side note, it was the first time in a very long time I remember feeling that the Astros were outclassed.  This series the Astros are going to juggle by playing a gimpy Carlos Lee at DH, which is likely going to mean a steady diet of Jason Michaels (.189/.271/.321).  American League teams carry a Hank Blalock or Jason Kubel or Jeff Larish on their roster with the express idea that they’re going to hit four or five times a game.  National League teams carry bench players like Michaels and Darin Erstad because they can field their positions capably and might be able to provide a little offense here and there.

To win the Silver Boot, the Astros would have to sweep the Rangers while outscoring them by 9 runs overall. Since that’s not going to happen, the Rangers can, to paraphrase the eloquent Tanner Boyle, take their trophy and shove it straight up their ass. Texas has won 20 of 33 home games this season, but have also dropped three of their last four home series (hello, June).  The Astros need to concentrate on winning series, and traveling to Texas(?) is as good a place as any to continue that.

But other than winning the games, who cares?  There is no rivalry here.  I don’t know that there ever has been.  Over their respective histories, the Astros and Rangers have mostly inconsequential in the grand scheme of baseball.  The Astros have had more division titles, playoff appearances and pennants (1).  The Rangers have still never won a playoff series, and are more known for overreaching franchise weirdness than anything else.  All things considered, I’d rather have another set of games with the Cubs or Cardinals (or Reds or Pirates or Brewers) than visiting Arlington, or Minnesota or 8 Mile.

I would guess Rangers fans feel the same way, but I’ve never met one.  I assume they’re all going to be glued to taped coverage of the luncheon the Cowboys are putting on for their employees in the Jerry Dome.  I’m not going to research whether or not they televise that kind of thing, but I’m leaning towards they absolutely do.

Safe At Home

Talk Zone favorite Alyssa Milano has written a book, Safe At Home: Confessions of a Baseball Fanatic. In the interest of full disclosure, I haven’t read it.  I haven’t read reviews of it.  I have a general idea that it’s some sort of quasi-biography set against her life as a baseball fan.  And while I do spend nights thinking about her and balls, in a way, I’m probably never going to purchase this.  I did pick it up because I saw this:

in a Barnes and Noble as I was busy drinking over-priced coffee and reading books for free. (Seriously, how do they make money?  The mark-up on coffee can’t be that good.) Spoiler Alert: That’s the only picture in the book.  I may be just a simple man, not wise to the mysterious ways of publishing, but damn man, how do you not have a a picture of that woman handling balls (and bats).  And if the star of Embrace of the Vampire is taking herself too seriously…have this chick fill in:

I don’t know what a Transformer is, but I will gladly give $12.50 to a movie theatre-type establishment if this woman is sweating her way through several scenes.

Pudge goes ‘home’ to set record

Posted on June 16, 2009 by OregonStrosFan in TRWD

special-report

Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez is set to tie the all-time catching record tonight in Arlington.  The Dallas Morning News and Houston Chronicle both have decent articles on Pudge’s career and his approach at Calton Fisk’s record of 2,226 games caught.

The Coop du jour

Posted on June 16, 2009 by OregonStrosFan in TRWD

special-report

(where the only consistency is inconsistency)

Round and round and round he goes, where Kaz’ll bat, nobody knows…

Cooper said Matsui will get the nod as starter at second base when he returns. (Astros.com)

“He’s our regular second baseman,” …”We need him to play at a real high level. [If] he plays at a high level, we’re going to be pretty good with he and [Michael] Bourn at the top [of the order].”

But Cooper said Matsui will hit near the bottom of the order when he gets back. …

“It’s pretty hard to take Tejada out of that slot after all this time,” Cooper said. “He’s been really swinging the bat real well in the No. 2 hole. [Matsui] will have to play at a high level, though, for us to be really good.”

Does Cooper evens listens to the drivel that he is spouting?

[Should Matsui start when he returns? Talk about it in the TZ]

Which leads us to the curious case of Wandy and the mysterious battery mate.

_____

Catching Wandy

Over the last few months, Coop could not say enough of the all-Rodriguez battery:

Cooper credited the dynamic relationship between Rodriguez and catcher Ivan Rodriguez as one of the keys to the pitcher’s success. “I’ll tell you, the guy who’s squatting and catching for him has been a godsend for him,” Cooper said. “They really connect, and Wandy has been as good as any pitcher in the game right now. He is really throwing the ball well. “They’re speaking the same language, and it gives him confidence that the guy back there is putting down the right fingers.” (Astros.com)

Wandy was equally enthusiastic about the pairing:

“I’ve learned a lot from Pudge,” Wandy Rodriguez said. “He’s a very smart catcher. And with him I’m not afraid to throw any pitch at any count because I trust the way he calls games.” *** “I’ve learned to have more confidence in myself,” Wandy said. “He’s given me a lot of confidence this season. For a player of his caliber in the top category of players in history, he makes it easy to feel comfortable with him. “He’s like a friend, and that has given me more confidence.” (Chron.com)

Yet despite Wandy’s confidence in Pudge, in addition to his own comments on the benefits of the pairing, Coop decided have Quintero catch Wandy in his previous start against the Cubs (and may do so in his start today against the Rangers). When asked about the decision, Coop commented:

“[Wandy] and Pudge had worked together for 10 or 12 starts, and I just said a change might be what’s needed for awhile,” Cooper said. “I’m going to start it today and see what happens. It’s not something Pudge is really happy with but I understand that. He wants to be an everyday guy and he and Wandy have had a good run. (Tag’s Lines)

[Which of course was contrary to his “Why tinker with it?” approach that he took when defending his decision not to bat Bourn in the leadoff spot. NYCU] http://www.spikesnstars.com/2009/05/16/why-tinker-with-it%e2%80%9d/#more-3622

So which is it Coop, has Pudge suddenly lost the confidence of his young protégé in favor of Quintero, or do you simply not have a clue as to what the hell you are doing?

Miggy a Co-ard?

Posted on June 16, 2009 by OregonStrosFan in TRWD

special-report

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that the Co-ards have an eye on Tejada: (Link)

The Cardinals have expanded their search for an additional hitter to include Houston Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada. Tejada fits the profile of what the Cardinals are seeking — an offensive deterrent capable of playing multiple positions. The Astros are experiencing financial problems and could part with a player owed $13 million this season.

Are the Astros experiencing financial problems? Who knows. Ticket sales are down and there have been rumors since the off season that Wade was looking to move Tejada’s salary. That said, 4.5 games out of the division lead trading a team favorite to a division rival – not a friggin’ chance there buddy.

Astros @ Rangers-Sing a Song of Elvis

Posted on June 16, 2009 by JaneDoe in Series Previews

This season the Rangers have found a new use for their blue suede shoes big boots–to kick the Asstros in their collective posterior.  The first meeting between the two teams resulted in a one sided love affair, a clean sweep by the neighbors from the north who invaded the MMPUS with a cane and a high starched collar.

Anybody seen my twinkies?

Anybody seen my twinkies?

The Astros have been bringin’ it back winning their last five series of the season.  Doncha think its time to sit on the edge of reality? Despite these series wins the Good Guys are still crying in the chapel sitting down by the riverside in last place with a do not disturb sign on the beach shack that is the home of the Central Division cellar dwellers.  This series is highlighted by double trouble, twins from the bosom of Abraham himself–Fat Elvis vs Black Elvis–we’ll be together until its time for you to go.

Sideburns, guys, I wanted sideburns. Like Elvis. Not me. Yeah, THAT Elvis.

Probable Pitching Matchups

Wandy Rodriguez, LHP (5-5, 2.82) vs  Kevin Millwood, RHP (6-4, 2.72)

Wandy my heart cries for you.  You follow a 3 game winning streak with a 3 game losing streak and a no decision, and now it is time to reach out to Jesus and put your hand in the hand of the spanish eyes that are steadfast loyal and true behind the plate.  Remember, you’re a heartbreaker for these Rangers, you have not lost to them in your career.  Beware of Ian Kinsler, who can’t help falling in love with you, he has a .700 average in 10 AB against you.

Millwood has given up more than 3 earned runs only three times this season.  But his lineup has left his blue eyes crying in the rain, providing enough runs to earn him only 6 wins on the season.  Six Astros have a batting average over .333 against Millwood.

Russ Ortiz, RHP (3-2, 3.48) vs Matt Harrison, LHP (4-4, 5.43)

Coop shows confidence in Ortiz, keeping him in the starting rotation for the second time.  Don’t think twice its alright with Russ, he didn’t seem too thrilled to be sent to the bullpen, it gave him that dirty, dirty feeling.  Elvis is the devil in disguise for Ortiz, he sports a beginner’s luck 1.000 batting average against him (a double in only one AB).  Andruw Jones also sends Ortiz crying to the chapel (.417 in 31 plate appearances).

Matt Harrison has some golden coins in his right pocket.  That’s right his pocket contains the “dreaded pitcher that the Astros have never faced good luck charm”.  We have no chance.  NO CHANCE.  BBG’s, please don’t be cruel.  (Bet ya were waiting on that one, huh?)  This is Harrison’s first start after a couple of minor league rehab assignments (inflammation in his left shoulder).

Roy Oswalt, RHP (3-3, 4.37) vs  Vicente Padilla, RHP (5-3, 4.82)

Oswalt looked like he was gaining confidence in himself in his last start vs the Diamondbacks, as evidenced by some nasty curves he was letting flip flop and fly.  Big boss man showed he could be king of the whole wide world with much better control of his bread and butter pitches (fastball, curveball) for really the first time this season in the same game.  Jones (.538), Kinsler (.462) and Young (.306) have paralyzed RoyO in the past, but here’s hoping he’s on the money honey for this start.

Padilla has turned his season around already.  After being placed on waivers earlier in the year, he has posted wins against both Boston and the Angels.  In his last 5 starts he is 4-1, his last one being an eight hit shutout of the Dodgers.  The fat version of Elvis has the chance to turn from a Jack to a King against Padilla.  He feasts on Padilla like he’s downing Queenie Wahine’s papaya, in 18 ABs he has 10 hits with 5 doubles and 2 HRs.
