Astros Highlights

Michael Bourn went 1 for 3 with a walk, 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored. Seems like the boy, excuse me, young man gets on base he scores. He’s keeping that average hovering around .290, I’d love for it to go up, but I’m not going to complain. He’s been a favorite of mine since the trade. (I can’t say the favorite since Bradley Ausmus was still an Astro.)

Miguel Tejada went 2 for 4 on the day with 2 runs scored. He’s having a good season. I’m glad he’s having a good season. It will help to trade him, if that happens.

Hunter Pence scored 2 runs on 1 hit and 1 walk, he also stole a base.I really don’t know what to think about Pence. I have a hard time trusting the numbers the kid is putting up this season. I’m thrilled for him, but I just can’t believe it is for real. I sincerely hope this isn’t a career year for him. Oh, yeah, he hit a homerun too.

Lance Berkman went 1 for 3 with a walk. He had two RBIs. Good thing Tejada was on base when he hit his homerun. I’m glad Tejada and Pence are making it easier for Berkman to find his groove this season. Imagine the conversations on talk radio stations if those two were having the season Berkman was having also.

Brian Moehler went 6 innings giving up only 3 runs. The thing I now find interesting is that his ERA is now 6.66. Seems the beast is there now.

The two members from the bullpen who pitched today threw 3 innings of scoreless baseball. Good job by Jeff Fulchino and Jose Valverde.

Diamondback Highlights
clay-zavadaClay Zavada pitched a scoreless 8th. There are no words necessary for his facial hair but I’m going to add some anyway. JD mentioned a similarity to Rollie Fingers and there was a Three Amigos reference from a friend while watching the game (and another I can’t remember right now). I really can’t imagine the chicks dig the long handlebars. Then again, maybe he can work some magic with it.

Chad Qualls pitched a scoreless 9th inning. I always liked him and hope he does well in his career. I wouldn’t mind him back with the Astros bullpen.

The Astros gave up another first for pitcher Billy Buckner, his first double. Seems like the Astros do this a lot. I’m sure other teams do this also, it’s only reasonable, but I really wish the Astros didn’t seem to do it as often as they do.

I felt bad for Chris Snyder when Bourn went to steal 2nd and no teammate of his covered the base.

Stephen Drew and Mark Reynolds both homered off of Moehler.

Game Analysis

I watched this game at a friend’s house today, great chicken spaghetti. While the game was fun to watch, I must admit, it did not have me excited. I guess I am still expecting that other team to come back. You know the team we saw earlier this season. The team that could and would find ways to lose. I don’t know maybe it is because I don’t think the Astros have beaten any good teams in the 5 series winning streak. The Astros have won 5 series in a row and are still three games back of .500. I don’t even want to talk about how close they are to the wild card or division leader.

Bench Tidbits:
The Lakers finally ended the NBA season.

For the in-game reactions, please check out the GameZone.

The Hangover hangs on to the box office lead this weekend. I haven’t seen this movie yet, but I plan on it. Mainly because one person I know said she wasn’t impressed with it and Bradley Cooper is HOT. (Not necessarily the picture I wanted to link but one I thought was good.)

Is there a pool or something where I can wager on how long before Miley Cyrus is involved in a scandal? Seriously, the girl is a time bomb, especially now that she is 16. Only a matter of time before something breaks.

Milestones Highlight Win

Astros recap

After suffering through a 7-game losing streak in May, the Astros have gone on to win 4 series in a row, and are playing Sunday in hopes of extending it to 5 straight. Oh, and they’ve also pulled to within 5 games of first place in the Division. Also, suck it, Joe Buck.

Roy Oswalt got win number three Saturday as the Astros beat the Diamondbacks 6-4 at Chase Field. He held them to just one run in 7 innings and showed better command and more confidence in his curveball – hopefully a sign that he’s beginning his patented second-half-of-the-season-dominance.

The excitement began in the sixth inning, when Miguel Tejada hit number 2000 of his career and drove in Bourn from third to tie the game at 1. Miggy continues to have a career offensive year for the Astros, and is hitting .341. He is only the 29th shortstop all-time to reach 2000, and had his wife, kids, sister, and several close friends on-hand to help celebrate the achievement.

Lance Berkman followed Miggy’s milestone with one of his own, just one out later. He jacked one almost 400 feet off of Jon Garland to collect his 300th career homerun. That makes the Puma only the 7th switch-hitter to hit 300 HR’s.

Coop ended up using almost every single player on his bench Saturday, and acknowledged after the game that the Astros were, “pushed to their limit,” and that, “it took everybody and almost everything they had to win”.

Literally. That’s because Pence!!! was the only position player left on the bench. The Astros had to piece this one together using what little they had, considering the bench is short and the injuries just keep on keepin’ on…

Carlos Lee got crampy in the leg while galloping to first base during the 4th and had to leave the game, and the D-Backs chased Sampson out in the bottom of the 8th after he began experiencing right arm fatigue. They’ll be able to compare notes with Blum and Keppinger on where it hurts.

Jose Valverde, available for first time since April 26th, was brought on in the eighth when Arias ran into trouble getting out of the inning. Although Coop had hoped to get Valverde back on the mound in a “non-pressure situation”, he called on him with 2 out and a man on 2nd. Papa Grande looked ok, but he may have gotten lucky with the pop-up that ended the inning that came on a fastball that was up in the zone.

La Troy Hawkins closed the 9th and collected the save.

(now available with 100% fewer hockey references).

Moehler takes the mound Sunday at 3:10 for the final game of the series.

Ed Wade Steps on the Bus

Posted on June 14, 2009 by Duman in From the Bus Stop

Last night, I went to Asheville NC to see the Legends play the Asheville Tourist.  My son & I snuck in (with permission) to see some BP.  It was wrapping up and I think I see Ed Wade walk by.  I say to my son, “I think that is Ed Wade, General Manager of the Astros.”  He wasn’t impressed.

Mr. Wade was there with Clarance Johns (Regional Supervisor of East scouting) to take in the Legends game and look at some of last years developing draft picks.  I identified myself as a fan from Greeneville and as one of the guys who covers the minors for SpikesnStars.com, a fan website.  There was a brief look on his face that I coudn’t discern if it was “Oh, crap, that’s worse that if he had said, “I am with 60 minutes”.  Of if the look was “huh, he looks to normal to be living in his mom’s basement.  I feel for his kid.”

Regardless, I engaged the nice gentlemen in some small talk about how Mr. Wade had traded away some of our families favorite kids from Greeneville (Patton, Parraz, Ralphie Henriquez…).  I then explained that we were there to catch up with some of the guys from last years team.  He said he didn’t think he would be trading any of the starting pitchers anytime soon.

With small talk over, I got down to the real questions I wanted answered.  The most important question to Astro Fans named Duman!  “What does the new GCL team mean for the talent we will see in Greeneville.”  What? You thought I was going to ask about the LaTroy Hawkins to the Twins rumors?  Please.

Mr. Wade said that Greeneville should be getting the upper tier highschool kids, some of the upper tier foriegn kids and some of the guys in extended spring training.  He said the Gulf Coast League Astros, would have the less refined HS kids and foriegn players.  So he summed it up by saying, we shouldn’t see much of a difference in Greeneville.

I then followed up by inquiring about how signings were coming from the draft, esp. the upper tier guys.  He said they were coming along and basically minimized things.  Mr. Johns chimed in and reported that 3, 4 & 5 are signed.  I don’t know if that is round or pick order.

I thanked them for their time and left to let them get down to the business of whatever it is they do hanging out at a minor league park before a game.

The Sound of One Bat Hitting

Posted on June 13, 2009 by GreatBagwellsBeard in Game Recaps

That sucked.  I know that this is one of those “you gotta tip your hat to the other guy” losses, but damn.  It would’ve been better if the whole thing were pinned on Spaz’s diving gamble in the first inning, but then Brandon “IED” Backe had to go and forget that he wasn’t on a rehab assignment and throw batting practice for three innings  on top of a a fairly reasonable performance by Mike Hampton.

Dan Haren was stellar for the D-backs, only allowing two hits en route to a complete game and his fifth win of the season.  The only run came on a soloo bomb by El Caballo (his 11th of the season).  Puma recorded the other hit, which I guess we’ll take as a positive sign that his slump is drawing to its inevitable close.

In the Series Preview, I said that we should consider this Brian Moehler’s last turn in the rotation, but after Backe’s performance and seeing Russ Ortiz’s success lately, I think that the best solution of all is to have a steel cage death match between Moehler and Backe (no tasers allowed), with the winner awarded a one-way ticket to Round Rock.  Besides, with Double Dub getting stretched out down there now,  the long reliever to replace Ortiz might be a familiar face.

Up next, Roy vs. one of the worst hitting teams in MLB. Not even going to tempt the BBGs by saying anything else. Plus: the return of Papa Grande! C’mon, we’ve got to find the silver linings where we can. If only there were something to cheer us up…ah, yes. Schadenfreude is spelled M-E-T-S.

Why’d It Have To Be Snakes?

Posted on June 12, 2009 by GreatBagwellsBeard in Series Previews

Look, there’s no good reason to hate the Diamondbacks.  They’ve got a silly name, sure, something that sounds like a fictional team on an 80’s video game that couldn’t afford an MLB license; “Shit, we can’t have the Sox and Phillies?  How about a team in Phoenix with a snake mascot, and a team in Florida with a completely harmless aquatic mascot?”  But that’s not really worthy of hate, especially for a team that once beat the Yankees in the World Series.  But the surging Astros have to face them this weekend, so fuck ’em anyway.

After winning the preceeding series against the Fucking Cubs, the ‘stros are either preparing for their patented mid-season surge, or just getting hopes high enough that they’ll refrain from trading any “crucial” pieces.   The D-backs should oblige in any case; they’re rudderless with an anemic offense backing up some strong starting pitching.  So with the hometown boys only five games out of first in the NL Central, and the tantilizing possibility of leapfrogging the Cubs and Pirates by Sunday dangling in front of our eyes, let’s keep on the sunny side and feast on some snake.  It tastes just like chicken.  (Which distinguishes it from Carlos Zambrano, who is [and I assume, tastes like] chickenshit.)

Matchups from MLB.com

Friday, 8:40 CST at Chase Field

Mike Hampton (4-4, 4.65) v. Dan(ny) Haren (4-4, 2.33)

This is the face of a man with a 2.33 ERA.

Seriously.

Seriously.

No, do not adjust your monitor.  The guy who hit on your sister at every party in high school, before going off to follow Dave Matthews around the country for a summer has a better ERA that Roy Oswalt.  Yet somehow, he’s 4-4, showing that the run support he’s getting is truly atrocious.  Even better, Pudge and Miggy have hit him well, with Beaker the only Astro who’s failed to get a hit off of him.  Get to Haren early, and this could be a fun night.

Of course, by way of comparison, here is a recent picture of Mike Hampton:

Caring about kids' schools = dating their teacher

Caring about kids' schools = dating their teacher

So he’s got that going for him.  Which is nice.  In reality, the more appropriate picture is something like this:

Gimme some sugar, baby

Gimme some sugar, baby

Hammy’s last two starts have been a lot more Harvey Dent than “why the hell are you moping over the death of a Gyllenhaal Goblin?”, and he has his work cut out for him against the Baby Backs.  Since most of the players on Arizona’s roster were in Huggies when Hampton had his best years, he hasn’t faced many of them.  Unfortunately, the ones he has face have hit him well; Mark Reynolds and Chris Snyder are both at .500, and Augie Ojeda is .667.  Time to adjust those averages down a bit, methinks.

Saturday, 7:10 CST

Roy Oswalt (2-3, 4.66) v. Jon Garland (4-6, 5.61)

Well, aren’t we glad we didn’t trade for Garland now?  The Christmas decoration has lost four in a row, and hasn’t won since May 19th, and is really, really pressing the question of just how valuable an innings eater is when he’s giving up runs at a steady clip.  The former AL-ers in Mud and Blood hit him well, except for Pudge (.178), with Tejada’s .435, 2 HR, and 8 ribbies leading the way.

Roy.  What else can we say about the Mississippi Midget? If it were possible to surgically extract bad innings from games, Coop (or Geoff Blum) would have Dr. James Andrews on speed dial for every Oswalt start. Fortunately, Roy is a Reds-esque 7-1 lifetime against the D-Backs, and he owns Mark Reynolds, who’s 0-fer against Roy-O.  Stephen Drew, Chris Young, and Miguel “Mitsubishi” Montero have all hit him fairly well, so hopefully their part of the lineup won’t be up when the Oswalt Inning arrives.

Sunday, 3:10 CST

Brian Moehler (2-4, 6.95) v. Billy Buckner (2-2, 6.75)

Don’t make the obvious joke. Don’t make the obvious joke. Don’t make the obvious joke, Mookie.

Shit.

Buckner actually sees a lot more balls going over his head than between his knees (that’s what she said), having given up roughly one homer every start en route to his Moehler-esque ERA.  Race to the bottom you guys! (also what she said)

Moehler pisses me off, so in lieu of telling you how Eric Byrnes somehow owns him, here’s a picture of a ferret clown.

Injury Reports (for your fantasy team!)

Astros

Aaron Boone – ruining his career with AutoTune

Doug Brocail – yelling at his hamstring to make it heal

Kaz Matsui – trying to kick Usain Bolt’s ass.

Felipe Paulino – whiplash sustained slingshotting between bullpen and rotation

Jose Valverde – he’s coming.  And hell’s coming with him.

D-backs

Tony Clark – Trying to persuade Bob Melvin to let him DH.

Tom Gordon – Consulting with producers of a porn version of “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon”

Conor Jackson – Valley Fever.  Seriously.

Yusmeiro Petit – is very small.

Chad Tracy – Surgery to remove girl’s name.

Brandon Webb – Wondering why Jake Peavy gets all the cute trade rumors.

Promotions

Friday: Post-game fireworks, you guys!  In a dry dry desert!  What could go wrong?

Saturday: Concert by crypto-Christian power-pop band Lifehouse.  Screw that.  We like our secretly Christian bands more like Cold War Kids.

Sunday: Hey, kids: want to learn how to make that pussy cream?  Get there early for your Baxter Soap Dispenser. I think I need to go wash my hands now.

Things to Watch For:

  • Moehler’s final turn in the starting rotation.
  • Number of times JD rolls his eyes (audibly) at another Billy Buckner joke.
  • Hampton picking pitches by flipping a scarred coin.
  • Seriously, a fucking bobcat soap dispenser?  Are there that few players on the D-backs who deserve a bobblehead?

Woodbat Leagues… The New DFE

Posted on June 12, 2009 by Duman in From the Bus Stop

A few years ago, a kid could be drafted and if he attended a junior college/community college, he could be called a DFE.  Draft, Follow, & Evaluate.  He just had to sign before the next draft.  Now the signing deadline is August 17th.  MLB teams have two months to evaluate talent and reach an agreement to sign or else lose the right to those players.  It now appears that the woodbat and summer college leagues are being used to be the place where further evaluation can take place before signing.

13th round pick Jake Goebbert is one example of how this strategy is being used.  He had already committed to play in the Cape Cod League.  He missed a fair amount of the season with a lacerated kidney.  He sustained the injury hitting an outfield wall at a dead sprint in April at the Metrodome.  He just was cleared to swing a bat three weeks ago.  He will be followed by Astros’ scouts during his time playing for the Harwich (Ma.) Mariners.  Then he will sign or can return to Northwestern for his senior season.
