Astros Recap
GameZone

”[T]his game has set baseball back at least 100 years” said one observer with memories of how the game was played back then. In a game that featured all forms of meltdowns by both pitching staffs (save a run-scoring balk, that was the previous game), and a poor defensive showing, the Astros and Natinals put on a stinker for the ages.

Well, mostly. Offensively, the Astros performed well, eclipsing their season high in runs scored. Pitching-wise, not so much (okay, it was just plain f-ugly).

The Astros started the scoring in the second. Miggy doubled and then scored on an RBI double off the right field wall by Pudge.

Roy surrendered the lead in the fourth though, allowing a two-run homer to left center to Elijah Dukes.

The Good Guys got those back and then some in the top of the fifth. Blum led off with a single. Roy tried to give ‘em an out with a sacrifice bunt, but the Nats would have none of that and instead threw the ball away while trying to get Blum at second. Bourn followed with a liner to the gap in left center, scoring Blum and Roy. Keppinger walked, Berkman advanced the runners with a grounder to first, and then the Nats decided to give Carlos a freebie. (JD: Do not try-o, El Caballo, on Cinco de Mayo). Miggy then proceeded to shoot a liner that one-hopped the left field wall, scoring Bourn and Keppinger. Middle 5: Astros 5, Natinals 2. Ace* on the hill, bottom of the sixth, “When you go up 5-2, you almost want to say, this one’s in the bag.”. Well DoRay, not so much…

* Lest this cause confusion, Roy was on the hill and Wandy was in the dugout.

The rest of the evening can pretty much be summed up here.

Roy started the 6th, but was unable to continue because of a bone bruise on his right index finger that he had received while bunting the previous inning. He left the inning with none out and runners at 1st and 2nd. The generally reliable Sampson came on in relief, for his first appearance in a couple of games. Unfortunately he was not immune from the variant of bullpen flu that had stricken the rest of his pen-mates the previous night. A single by Zimmerman (hitting streak now at 23) scored 1. Dunn advanced the runners with a roller to Berkman. This was followed by a walk, RBI walk, RBI walk, strikeout (2nd out) and another RBI walk, and then Sampsons day was through. (JD: People come to Washington looking for a handout, the Astros have come here to bail out the Natinals. A lot of freebies here.). Byrdak was called in to stop the bleeding, but a potentially inning-ending grounder to Miggy was muffed, allowing another run to score and keeping the bases juiced. Byrdak proceeded to hit the next batter (scoring yet another) before inducing a grounder by Zimmerman to end the inning. (JD prior to the grounder: And now [home plate umpire] Lance Barksdale’s right arm is broken. He’s forgotten how to call strikes). The Natinals (who, as a team, were hitting .152 this year with the bases loaded) scored 6 runs on 2 singles and an error in the 6th, and the Astros trailed 8-5.

The Astros bats were not finished, however. In the top of the 7th Bourn placed a solid bunt towards third, was moved over by Kepp and kept company on the bases with a walk to Berkman. Lee, with yet another strong 2-strike approach, reached for one and singled to right, scoring Bourn. Miggy followed this by reaching for a slider down and away, singling to right and scoring Berkman. (It is unknown whether Coop chided Lee and/or Miggy for trying to go the opposite way in an RBI situation in these two at bats). Pence followed this with a grounder to 2nd scoring Lee, but a muff by the Natinals shortstop failed to get the force. A crappy at bat by Blum ended the top of the 7th with the score tied at 8. A wild pitch in the top of the 8th allowed Erstad to score another, and the Astros led 9-8 in the middle of the 8th.

The bullpen wasn’t finished either, but not in a good way. Geary came in, got a fly-ball out, gave up a single, and then proceeded to give up a two-run blast to Christian Guzman in the bottom of the 8th, giving the Natinals a 10-9 lead.

Again the Astros bats weren’t ready to call it quits. Pence hit a bloop double down the line in right, Pudge moved him over with a ball on the ground to the right, and Blum sent him home with a sacrifice fly to deep center. Geary remained in the game and managed to keep the Natinals from scoring another, and on to extras they went.

Geary threw another scoreless inning in the bottom of the 10th. The Astros had some chances to push a run across in the 11th, but were unable to do so. Hawkins came in to pitch the bottom of the 11th. Hawkins managed an out before walking Dukes on four pitches. With one on, one out, in the bottom of the 11th, [a]t the sight of the Nats and Astros bullpens, the sky had laughed ’til it cried, a rain delay ensued and the game was ultimately suspended.

The game will resume on July 9th, where the Astros will be the away team at the home field (which is a hell of a lot better than being the home team at a neutral field…).

Other notes:

Bourn looked damn good again (save his inability to lay down a sac bunt), going 2-6 with 2 runs, 2 RBIs and only 1K.

Miggy went 3-6 with a run and 3 RBIs.

Roy may miss his next bullpen, but should feel well enough to make his next start.

One is not the loneliest number that you’ll ever do, that’d be 0-20 (and maybe).

Next Game: Buzz and his FTC’s come to MMPUS tonight to face the Good Guys. Harden and Hampton are probables to take the mound.”

I’d link to the Series Preview, but it is not yet posted.

This is where you recognize that managers cannot play for the single game in the regular season; you’re trying to win as many of 162 games as you can. And when your bullpen is short one injured pitcher (Sampson), has two guys who were starting last week, and has its top two guys on the DL, then pitching 12 innings over 2 games leaves you somewhat exposed for the next game.

So it really came as no surprise when the bullpen inherited a 4-2 lead and quickly turned it into a 9-4 loss. The only surprise was that the offense couldn’t mount anything further after the four early runs.

The good – Moehler looked pretty good, the first of the two runs in the fifth scoring when he absolutely sawed off Elijah Dukes. Some times, the ball doesn’t fall your way. Also, Kaz Matsui reaching base 3 times.

The bad – I believe two posts from the GZ will sum it up:

HH: 5 runs on three fucking singles.

Jim R: Wright caused that. Paulino is being screwed by all concerned, including the Astros brain trust. That arm is too good to waste.

The ugly:

Remember that time we gave up 9 unanswered runs to the worst team in baseball? That was awesome.

Also, playing a game in 55 degree drizzle in front of “official” attendance of 14,115, when the actual crowd appeared to be 2 or 3 SnS’ers and a small student group.

Roy tries to make it a winning road trip, bright and early today at 11:35.

It was an exciting game to watch, although I kept being interrupted. See, I was preparing myself for one of those tests men have to get after they turn 50 so my attention span was less than what’s required to watch a baseball game. I did, however, see some gutty performances, real intestinal fortitude by the entire crew today as they took game three 7-5 and a road series win from the Braves.

Wandy continued to pitch well on the road, though Coop wouldn’t let him return for the 6th after giving up 1 run in the 4th and 2 in the 5th. In the 4th, things could have been worse for Wandy were it not for a nifty Lee/Tejada/Pudge relay to nail Francouer at the plate trying to score on a double by Prado. In the 5th, a walk, single, sac bunt and intentional walk loaded the bases. With Francouer up, Wandy turned his foot on the rubber to prepare his delivery then stopped and stepped back, with no apparent deception. “That’s a BALK!!!” bellowed from Phil Cuzzi’s piehole as the runners rotated and the go ahead run scored. JD summed the balk rule up as “institutional stupidity.” A sac fly on the next pitch scored Infante to put the Braves up by 2. Wandy got out of both the 4th and 5th innings with Ks.

Matsui’s lead-off double led to the Astros 1st run on the 1st on a sac bunt by Bourn and a sac fly by Berkman. After the Braves 5th gave then a 3-1 lead, the Astros strung together 4 straight singles from Bourn, Berkman, Lee and Tejada to tie it up, then a sac fly by Pudge put the Astros up again.

The lead was short-lived as a bottom 6 leadoff triple led to another game-tying run for the Braves. But timely hitting and baserunning in the top of 7th netted 2 more for the Astros that put the up for good. The depleted bullpen hung on with Fulchino, Wright and Geary handling the 6th and 7th and giving up a run in each.

Brocail came out for the 8th and made a nice play covering 1st to get the 1st batter of the inning but came down on the bag awkwardly and ended up in a heap. Strained hamstring is the diagnosis and he’s expected to hit the DL again soon. Ortiz stepped up and got the second out but walked 2 and Coop brought in Hawkins to finish the 8th with a K of Francouer. LaTroy got a ground out and 2 Ks to earn his 3rd save of the season.

Up to DC for 2 with the Nats. Moehler expected to start vs. Lannan.

FOX sure knows how to put out a spread. Taking over the broadcast of the game from JD and Brown they handed it to Mark “The Slump Buster”Grace and Kenny “Everyone’s Embarassed by Their Dad at Some Point, but I Bet Your Dad Just Said ‘Pull My Finger” A Lot” Albert.

Astros did not do much on the night. They scored two runs. I give the Astros player of the game to Michael Bourn who was 2-5 on the night, with a triple, single, and a run scored. He also made some great catches in centerfield.

There were hits by other Astros, but you can check out the recap and the box score for more details.

While watching the 7 innings that I had recorded, I think it should only be a matter of time before Kazuo Matsui and Michael Bourn get switched in the batting order.

Bench Tidbits:

There was no GameZone for the night. Seems like a night to be out.

Morgan Ensberg has a job. Good luck to him.

There is a Polish festival in Houston today.

Even I know you don’t sit Berkman in Cincinnati. For some reason, Coop didn’t know this and the packed seats at Great American got to see their Pedro clone toss 8 scoreless and for a brief moment, forget how bad their team gets punked in their own house. The Good Guys could only scrape out 1 hit on the wily righty Volquez and while he didn’t go the distance, it didn’t matter to the Astros lineup. A perfect 9th by Cordero finished them off and they left Cincinnati with a series win but a 3-0 loss.

It’s a shame the bats couldn’t get it together because Felipe Paulino pitched well himself, holding the Reds to 2 runs until running out of steam with 2 outs in the 6th. He was aided early by some fine defensive play in CF as Bourn made a few stellar plays among his 6 put-outs through the first 4 innings. A triple/single in the 5th got the Dicketies on the board, then a single and sac bunt had Reds on 2nd and 3rd with one out but Paulino got a ground ball to Blum who gunned the runner at home and then a strike out to Hairston to clean up the mess.

More mess in the 6th as a Votto routine fly ball to LCF, tracked and called for by Bourn, bounced off of Carlos Lee’s glove in a classic miscommunication play. The error was given to Bourn after Votto cruised into 2nd. A K then a ground out moved Votto over to 3rd for Laynce Nix whose single on the infield to Tejada brought the unearned run home. A 4-pitch walk to the next batter ended Paulino’s night.

Sampson finished the 6th with a K and shared the scoreless 7th with Byrdak. With 2 out in the top of the 8th, pinch hitter Jason Michaels (2-3 career vs. Volquez) worked a walk and Coop finally decided that maybe this Berkman guy could hit. Lance hit a liner but right at the diving Jay Bruce in RF to end the inning.

Brocail entered the 8th to keep the score in reach and gave up a single and 2 walks to promptly load ’em up. A sac fly scored the Reds 3rd run, effectively ending it.

11-game winning streak at GAB snapped and 3 more on the road at Atlanta after an off-day. Vent your Cooper frustrations in the Talk Zone ya’ll!
