Ahhsome. Wikkid Ahhsome.

Posted on July 3, 2011 by Ron Brand in Featured, Game Recaps

Boston 2, Houston 1

W: J. Beckett (7-3)
L: M. Melancon (5-2)

“Hi. You’re not from around here.”

“Nawh. I’m from up Nawth.”

She smoothed her too-tight skirt while pushing her hair back, her chipped polish catching the light. “Boston?”

“Yeh, Bahsten. Evah been deah?”

“Um, yeah. It’s been a while though.”

He positioned himself so that she’d notice his arms. He was proud of his arms. He knew that girls liked looking at them so he took extra time at the gym to make sure they were big. Nobody cares about legs, it’s all about the muscles you can see, that’s what counts with the chicks.

“Nice arms.”

“Yeh. I work owt. Gettin’ wicked lahge,” he crowed, flexing a bicep. She wasn’t too bad to look at, certainly better than those North Shore pigs with tits. Looked like she might have been pretty a few back but was on the down side of it now. Any port in a storm, any date if it’s late, right? And it was getting a little late on this swing, he’d be back home soon enough to Maira if she wasn’t stuck on that fuckin’ Guido from New York. Every time he came around, loud, money, always making noise and bringing her stuff, it just made his blood boil. Noo Yawk this, Noo Yawk that.

Fuck that. He was gonna hit this. Hit it hard, hit it often and she’d be begging for more when he was through and on his way back home. Fuckin’ cowgirls, they don’t know shit.

“You wan’ anothah beeah?” he asked, motioning his order to the bartender. She was already feeling his arms and this one was in the bag. Hell, if she was good maybe he’d let her cook breakfast for him in between getting his rocks off again. She’d do it. She’d be glad to do it.

Ten walks. No walks for the home team, but fourteen strikeouts. Six hits, two by the guy who scored the only run. Bases loaded situations again and again and again, until the last one finally broke through for the winning run after an intentional walk. The wonder is that that lineup didn’t gouge the staff deeper and more often. Maybe they had a few last night and figured it wouldn’t take much to complete the sweep.

1-8 homestand. One and fucking eight.

The really bad part, the part that tastes like fresh shit in your mouth, is that the Houston Astros, the team owned by a Texan, didn’t just lay down for the Red Sox but in fact spread their legs, took the loads, got up and cooked dinner and put their favorite music on the radio for them. All that was left of what once was dignity was the money left on the nightstand after they went out the door. The Astros whored their way to a payday while giving up the only thing they had left.

Lobster rolls. “Let’s go, Red Sox!” Sweet Caroline ON THE FUCKING SOUND SYSTEM.

Lay down. You fucking laid down, you cocksucker. You can’t get the hell out of town soon enough.

There is no pride. There is no dignity. There is nothing but the last few dollars to be squeezed before you hide behind your money, you sorry bastard. You have taken the faith and hope and dreams of lifelong fans and ground them into shit before our very eyes. This was a despicable, craven act and I hope there is something, some failing, some breach of something that shakes you to your very core to make you pay for this to your last breath.

Fuck you. Get the hell out of town. Now.

Bullpen once again comes in and stops the clotting; Astros lose

RED SOX 10, Astros 4

WP: Andrew Miller (2-0, 3.06)
LP: J.A. Happ (3-10, 5.63)

HOUSTON (SnS) – In a replay of their last forty gazillion er, seven-hundred and forty-three um, several dozen games, the Houston Astros showed a few signs of life here and there before giving in and getting completely smoked by the opposition – in this case the AL Boston Red Sox, to the tune of 10-4 here Saturday night.Read More

Sometimes The Bear Eats You. Sometimes The Forest Is On Fire.

W: Howell (1-1)
L: Lopez (1-4)

In the middle of this interleague hokum, the Astros finally decided to play along and show the hometown faithful what it would be like to be an AL team. Pitching meant little today, whether you were a #5 starter masquerading as a #3 or a normally reliable reliever put in a situation dealt with all season long. Few were immune to the onslaught of the bats and the Rays ended up on top at the end, 14-10.

The Astros banged out 14 hits. Every starter except for Happ had at least one hit; Lee and Barmes had two, Keppinger had three including a double and a home run. Only two runners were left on base. The team was one shy of tying the Astro record by slapping ten extra-base hits.

However, the Astros were the first NL team this season to score ten runs and still lose the game. Happ gave up three in the first and hung on despite constant rattling from the Rays before leaving with a 7-5 lead after five.

The see-saw continued when Lopez gave up two in the sixth, then the Good Guys came back in the seventh on a Jeff Keppinger bomb to regain the lead at 8-7. In trouble in the eighth, Lopez gave way to the closest thing to a lock-down the Astros have had this year, closer Mark Melancon.

The Rays had 19 hits on the day. The top four hitters were 13 for 22 with 10 RBIs and 12 runs scored. They hit mistakes, they hit good pitches, they hit ’em where they were, where they weren’t, where they should’ve been and they hit the hell outta the closer. Melancon gave up six hits and five runs in 1.1 innings while blowing the second save of the game for the Astros.

A shell-shocked and grim-faced Brad Mills praised the offense after the game. It would be nice if this was the start of more production from the bats. Unfortunately, this happened on a day when even the most reliable members of the bullpen had no answer for the defending AL champions.

Day off tomorrow to get a break from another sweep, and then it’s time for more AL wonderfulness as the Rangers and then the Red Sox come to town. That’s smoke you’re smelling.

WP: Melancon (5-1)
LP: Feliz (0-1)

ARLINGTON (SnS) – The Houston Astros defeated the Rangers here Wednesday night in the Trailer Park at Arlington, 5-3. The Astros starter Brett Myers pitched well, overcoming an Arlington offense geared to take advantage of the steamroom-like atmosphere in the AA-sized joke of a ballpark they play in. He was matched by Arlington starter Colby Lewis.Read More

Manufacturing interest

Astros 3
Ryangers 8

W: Holland | L: Happ

I’ve said a lot regarding the way I feel about this whole “Lone Star Series” horseshit. Kicking it around more only gives it power but I will say that not only am I less interested in the match-up – simply because it’s interleague which I am not fond of – but I’m pissed off that they go out of their way to pump it up like it’s something to be interested in rather than what it is, a manufactured rivalry between two teams with no shared history. I don’t hate the Rangers, I just don’t care about them and that kills any passion required to make this anything other than a win or a loss.

Well, this one was a loss, as were 5 out of 6 in 2010 and 5 of 6 in 2009. Getting shitstomped by the Rangers is becoming a late-spring ritual, like tornados. In a nutshell, Happ didn’t pitch well, but then the defense didn’t play well either. The Rangers posted 7 runs through 3 – 5 earned – and chased Happ with 2 out in the 3rd.

Anuery did pitch well, keeping the Rangers off the board but Holland limited the Astros opportunities to claw back. They looked like they were figuring him out in the 2nd with 2 runs on 3 hits but that was all they could eek out until they got 1 more in the 8th. Melancon made that moot, giving up a massive solo blast to Moreland in the bottom of the inning to end all scoring.

Remember, there’s 5 MORE CHANCES to put these STINKIN’ RANGERS in their PLACE and bring the SILVER BOOT back to HOUSTON where it BELONGS!!!

Ugh.

Astros at Rangers – Again with the Stupid Boot

Posted on June 20, 2011 by Craig in Featured, Series Previews

Boy, the dog days have settled in and we’re only halfway through June. This swoon feels almost Cub-like, though without so much delusion. But hey, I know what will drag this team out of the doldrums – two weeks playing against the American League! Yeah, that’s just the thing.

And now there’s even this bullshit talk about moving the Astros to the AL? Seriously? If you can’t trade Carlos Lee to a team that needs a DH, I guess you can just trade the team to the league with the DH. It’s like Lee’s contract has become such a drag on the team, that’s it’s formed it’s own weight and mass and is developing a gravity well.

So anyway, the Astros have the worst record in baseball and the Rangers are leading their division for now. Plus you know the Dallas area is just so proud of itself after the Mavs won their title, that a giant forcefield of Metroplex Smug will be enveloping the city. I’ve smelled it before – it’s like a film of oilfield grease under a thick layer of Mary Kay makeup.

Oh, and there are red flag fire warnings all over the state, so it will be hot and smoky and windy, plus the air temperature will be hotter than the devil’s balls. So nope, I’m not making the trip to Dallas, not even for a Nelson Cruz bobblehead. I’ve always hated Dallas, and I think right now I’d hate it even more.

Tuesday, June 21, 7:05 p.m. CDT
Wednesday, June 22, 7:05 p.m. CDT

Now that the Rangers and Astros are playing each other, Fox Sports Southwest shouldn’t have any trouble getting an HD camera crew to the games, right? Because maybe it’s just me, but it seems like the HD broadcasts are getting less frequent, not more.

Notable giveaways

Monday – A Nelson Cruz Walk-Off Bobblehead, with Cruz supposedly calling his shot. I think he’s just pointing to where the wildfire is coming from, before wisely evacuating.

Tuesday – Reliant Energy Sunglasses. Can’t argue with cheap sunglasses, unless they look like shit or something.

Wednesday – the usual cheap food and shit

Projected Matchups from Astros.com

Monday
J.A. Happ (3-8, 4.95)  v. Derek Holland (5-2, 4.78)
Happ hasn’t won a game since mid-May. He’s never seen the Rangers, though he’s pitched to Torrealba and Chavez who are a combined 0-for-5 against him.

Holland is 2-0 in six starts at home this year but hasn’t won there since late April. He has faced the Astros once but that was a couple of years ago. Michael Bourn is 2-for-3 against him.

Tuesday
Jordan Lyles (0-2, 4.30)  v. C.J. Wilson (7-3, 3.03)
Lyles gets his first start against future division rival Texas. He’s still looking for his first career win, so a nice long stretch against the American League should do the trick.

Wilson is 2-1 against the Astros is several starts and relief appearances. Carlos Lee is 4-for-8 against him, and Jason Michaels is 4-for-9 with a single, a double, a triple, and a homer.

Wednesday
Brett Myers (3-6, 4.75) v. Colby Lewis (6-7, 4.80)
Myers has seen a few of the Rangers before and none of them have had much success. Ian Kinsler is 2-for-2 with a homer, and Adrian Beltre has a homer but is 2-for-14 overall against Myers. Endy Chavez is only 2-for-17 against him.

Lewis had a win and a loss against the Astros last season. Carlos Lee is 4-for-13 against Lewis but nobody else has more than a double off him.

Injury Report
Houston – In addition to the regulars, now Hunter Pence and J.R. Towles are banged up and questionable for this series. And in a rare break from tradition, but with a nod to reality, the Astros have decided to list Hunter Pences’ injuries separately by body part. For example, his heart and enthusiasm will always be listed as “probable,” while his head and arm will always be “questionable.”

Texas – Three relievers and three starters are on the DL, plus Mike Napoli is out until later this month.
