THE THINGS THAT I USED TO DO

PITTSBURGH (SnS) – In a nice turn after a week of abject ugliness, the Houston Astros posted a tidy little win over the Pittsburgh Pirates here Wednesday night, 8-2, thus salvaging the final game of a three-game set in the Iron City. The Astros capitalized on Pittsburgh miscues, got good pitching both from starter Bud Norris and the bullpen, and saw an offensive mini-resurgence to the tune of fourteen hits and eight runs. :sniff: The whole thing served to remind fans of happier – or at least less sad – days in Houston.Read More

DEAD CALM

PITTSBURGH 5, Houston 1
July 5, 2011
PNC Park

PITTSBURGH (SnS) – It was a fairly well-played game. It was a relatively quick game, especially given some of the recent AL-type interleague borefests the club has been involved in lately. Wandy Rodriguez started and pitched okay – not great, but not terrible. But the result was the same, as the Houston Astros fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates here tonight, 5-1. The Astros lost their fifth in a row, the ninth of their last ten, the twelfth of their last fifteen, twenty-fourth of their last thirty, and so on. This looks like a team in free-fall now, and it is hard to imagine a scenario where the incessant losing will be stopped, or even slowed down very much.Read More

HOUSTON (SnS) – In a replay of their last forty gazillion er, seven-hundred and forty-three um, several dozen games, the Houston Astros showed a few signs of life here and there before giving in and getting completely smoked by the opposition – in this case the AL Boston Red Sox, to the tune of 10-4 here Saturday night.Read More

INTERLEAGUE COLLISION! CALL A SOMNAMBULANCE!!

ASTROS 5, ARLINGTON 3

WP: Melancon (5-1)
LP: Feliz (0-1)

ARLINGTON (SnS) – The Houston Astros defeated the Rangers here Wednesday night in the Trailer Park at Arlington, 5-3. The Astros starter Brett Myers pitched well, overcoming an Arlington offense geared to take advantage of the steamroom-like atmosphere in the AA-sized joke of a ballpark they play in. He was matched by Arlington starter Colby Lewis.Read More

Astros (25-45) vs. Dodgers (31-39)

Chavez Ravine

LOS ANGELES (SnS) – The hapless, staggering Houston Astros, choking on the dust of a three-game sweep at home at the hands of the once (and future) lowly Pittsburgh Pirates and nursing (by far) the worst W-L record in MLB, visit the Don Mattingly-helmed Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend, a team who appears to everyone else in the NL to be a kind of running joke – a mediocre collection of players commanded by an iffy first-year manager, whose daily adventures in divorce court are far more gripping and relevant than the games they play on the field – yet who to the Astros look as scary and dangerousRead More

HOUSTON (SnS) – The Houston Astros built up an early lead against the Pittsburgh Pirates here Wednesday evening, only to once again have the game get away from them late, losing this time by the score of 7-3.Read More
