Holy Fucking Shit! Astros Win!!

Posted on April 16, 2010 by MusicMan in Game Recaps, News

Astros at Cardinals, 4/15/2010
Astros 5, Cardinals 1
W Norris (1-1) L Lohse (0-1)

It’s really just that easy, isn’t it? All you have to do is:

  • get your rookie starter to strike out Albert Pujols twice;
  • get Bourn and Keppinger looking like an impressive 1-2 combo at the top of the order;
  • get some timely hits, such as from your starting pitcher (who now has more RBI than Kabong);
  • and get four innings of stellar work from your pen (Sampson to Lyon to Lidstrom)
  • Yea, winning curs all ails, and even lets you overlook things like Carlos Lee’s dropping of a routine fly ball to give up another unearned run, or his 1-31 streak at the plate, or Pam’s Pet getting picked off of first.

    Tax day is past us, the 0-8 start stories are past us, and things can only go up from here.

    What a waste

    Posted on September 15, 2009 by MusicMan in Game Recaps

    Astros at Reds, 9/14/09
    Reds 3, Astros 1

    Box score… I’ve got it here somewhere… ah, to hell with it!

    The Astros wasted:

  • A stellar start by Wandy, who gave up 2 runs in the 7th when Jay Bruce singled off of WW on one of those singles that a healthier, more interested Puma probably at least knocks down in better times;
  • Another 2-4 night by leadoff man extraordinaire Michael Bourn
  • A rare night with no GIDP by Tejada
  • Another chance to play Johnson, Manzella, Maysonet, or anyone who might have relevance to next year’s team
  • Another day with the opportunity to fire Cecil Cooper
  • But at least the Astros didn’t waste the biggest opportunity of the night.

    Astros at Cubs, 8/31/09
    Astros 5, FTC 3
    W: Oswalt (8-5), L: Harden (8-8), S: Valverde (20)

    Tag’s Wrap
    Box

    Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens;
    Hunter Pence fielding like he’s wearing mittens.
    Roy going seven, no Oswalt Inning;
    These are a few of my favorite things.

    Heavy left fielder hitting two-run home run;
    Rich Harden missing the whole strike zone.
    Fuck the Cubs hearing the fat lady sing;
    These are a few of my favorite things.

    When the Astros bite
    When the B’s don’t sting
    When I’m feeling sad
    I simply remember how much the Cubs suck
    And then I don’t feel so bad

    No, Bob Davidson did not work this game

    Astros at Marlins, 8/10/09
    Marlins 8, Astros 6
    W: VandenHurk (2-1) L:Moehler (7-8) S: Nunez (12)
    HR: Erstad (2)

    Box score

    I really wish I could get more worked up over this game, but when 12,000 people bother to show up to watch a team 3 1/2 games out of the division lead, then it doesn’t exactly set the mood.

    Moehler got rocked for 4 runs in the first when he couldn’t find the plate with a guide dog, thus letting the miniscule air out of the balloon that might havebeen there. Erstad cut the lead in half the following inning with a 2-run dinger, and Moehler settled in with 3 straight 1-2-3 innings. A 1st and 2nd, 1 out situation in the 6th necessitated a Michaels PH for Moehler, a move that unfortunately did not pan out.

    Enter Chris Sampson, who I think even neutral observers are concerned could have a Dave Dravecky-level incident on the mound if Cooper Blum doesn’t stop running him out there so often. Sampson loaded the bases with one out, and then allowed a run scoring single to CF with Bourn gunning down another victim at home. Hirstute Nick Johnson was then walked intentionally, followed by a play I can’t properly explain to you. Apparently whatever glaucoma patient MLB decided to run out last night decided that Sampson flinched before ever coming to a set position, and called a run-scoring balk.

    Things just went downhill from there, and despite the best efforts of the umpiring crew to gift the run back to the Astros in the 9th with another balk, it just wasn’t enough.

    Roy tries tonight to overcome his balky back, 6:05 CDT.
