The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / George Springer
« on: June 12, 2011, 09:59:05 pm »
Gang-

Just got back from Super Regional action in Columbia, SC. I work for the South Carolina Baseball team and we had the opportunity to see UConn in action this weekend, including new Astros draftee George Springer.

A few thoughts, if you're interested, from a fellow Astros fan...

Springer is a good looking player overall. Body type wise, he is going to need to add some weight. Nice speed in the outfield, he didn't seem to be a huge burner on the basepaths, though. Good hitter in the gaps...didn't see much power out of him this weekend (Mostly due to solid pitching by SC)

Very good in judging fly balls...if you get a chance go back and look at the highlights from tonight's game (Game 2) and you'll see an over the shoulder catch that will simply stun you. He has absolutely no fear in laying out for a ball either.

All of this is from the limited time that I had to watch him in the Super Regional round (2 games) since my Gamecocks were able to knock UConn out so quickly.

Go Astros!
Go Gamecocks!

My dad really liked Otis Nixon, during that whole Braves early 90s run.  I always respected Terry Pendelton and his workman effort on that team.

Talk Zone / Starting Pitching
« on: November 10, 2008, 01:51:00 pm »
Forgive me, gang, I've been away for the last few weeks of the season with a lot of work stuff that has kept me away from talking Astros baseball.  I'm a bit out of the loop, so I was hoping you might be able to help me out with some opinions/info.

What avenues in starting pitching would you like to see explored over the next couple of months?

I know that the Astros are pretty much out of the Peavy "sweepstakes."  I think it is a smart move to avoid making this kind of deal.  As much as I'd like to have Peavy on the team it would be tough to part with what little minor league talent we have left.

The Cardinals have reached a roadblock with Toronto and Halladay.  Is this the same situation as Peavy and the Padres or would this be an option?

Or perhaps Pettitte?

And just FYI: The Astros NEVER score runs while I'm watching. I have to either be AT work or headed home from work for them to score.

Well if that's the case...there goes the Silver Boot.

Pence?  Haven't seen him in a few weeks.

Runner on 1B with NO outs to losing the game.  Pathetic.  G'night all, am going to vent with a couple of Stolis...

You're right...I tried to block out Bourn and his stupidity.  To think, last year we could have dumped Lidge for Ellsbury.  This year we get Michael Bourn.

19
You go from a runner on and 1 out to one strike away from losing the game.

20
Disgusting.

21
Bourn is quickly, very quickly losing any ounce of credibility with me.

22
Calling timeout in the middle of the pitch.  arrrgh!

The mustache, unlike the masking action of a beard, calls attention to its wearer by stating confidently: I am furry and riding shotgun -- you got a problem with that?"

Best line of all!

24
Oh. poor Joe Girardi: he doesn't want to have to go two series in a row without the DH. He's going to be real unhappy when I become President, because the very first thing I'll do is abolish the DH.

I think Giambi should worry about finding a razor for that porn 'stache he's workin on.

So we've got Fielder and Braun, anyone else want to add to this list of disliked players?

Is he athletic?  Does he project as a possible LF, C, 1st Baseman, 2nd baseman?  Does he run well?  How are his hands?  What is his body type?

Thanks...

Dish is not very athletic.  Just a strong country boy.  Spent a lot of time at DH.  When they needed him in the field  he basically spent his time at catcher while at South Carolina.  He wasn't an awful catcher, but usually only played in the field when the game was out of reach either way.  South Carolina listed him at 6-2 210.  From what I could tell, he had a little more weight on him than that.

Just a bit of information on Astros signee Phil Disher (15th round) here...

Disher was a DH for South Carolina most of the season, even though the Astros drafted him at 1B, he did not get any playing time whatsoever over Justin Smoak (Rangers draftee at 11th overall)

When Disher did play, he played at catcher.  Disher has a lot of trouble with changeups and swings at a lot of bad pitches.  Not very difficult to figure out for opposing pitchers.  The upside on Disher, he can hit the ball a mile.  Lots of power.

Talk Zone / Re: What's best for J.R. ?
« on: May 28, 2008, 02:00:54 pm »
Obviously you have not been watching the Astros. Automatic outs in the 8th spot in the order have been holding this team back for years. This is just more of the same. The Astros will never succeeed with that kind of OPS hitting before the pitcher.

Certainly better than the 7-8-9 black hole that we had last year.  The Astros have never gotten great production out of the 8 spot whether it was Everett or Ausmus there.  It was a black hole in the World Series year too.  So, for you to say that the Astros can't succeed with Towles in the 8 hole isn't very accurate.

53
Talk Zone / Re: What's best for J.R. ?
« on: May 28, 2008, 01:48:04 pm »
For me, it is much easier to be patient with Towles when everything else around him is clicking as it is.  I thought about this last night, while it would be great to have someone who is tearing it up offensively is that something that will make or break the team right now?

I think the team has determined that he's the one with the best shot at being here for the long haul.  Therefore, they've decided to stick it out with him and let him learn to be the best defensive catcher he can from Ausmus.  Hopefully, eventually, the offense will come around.

Talk Zone / Crasnick on Bourn
« on: May 21, 2008, 07:08:33 pm »
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN has an article up on the top base stealers in MLB...

Bourn is listed as one of the "newcomers"  Here's the word on Bourn and the link...(Kaz is also mentioned as a player of note)

Newcomers Division

[Michael Bourn, Astros
"There are three stages of speed: Fast, really fast and Mike Bourn," said Jimmy Rollins.

The long-term question is, will Bourn reach base consistently enough to take advantage of his speed? You wouldn't know it by his .196 batting average with Houston this season.

Before Bourn left Philadelphia in the Brad Lidge trade, Lopes told him that base stealing was his ticket to a long and lucrative future in the game.

"I told Michael, 'Run to the bank. That's your moneymaker,' " Lopes said. "If Michael hits, he will be the dominant base stealer in the game. Without question."]

There is also something to be said for getting into the groove of a game by playing in the field instead of just DH'ing.  With Berkman on a streak like he is/was I'm not so sure I would have changed it up and put him at DH.  (But I'm not getting paid the big bucks)

I know that 1b isn't the most pressing need for us right now.  With that said, I gotta say if the Astros have a shot at Justin Smoak, they'd be wise to take a long look at him.

I've seen him in person many times (being a Gamecock fan) and he's probably the best hitter that South Carolina has had in it's rich baseball history.  He also has a pretty solid glove.

I was reading up on some draft info at astros.com earlier today and wanted to get some thoughts on what position you guys would like to see drafted with the 10th overall pick?  I know the writer mentioned Gordon Beckham, the SS from Georgia as a possiblity.  Being an SEC fan I've heard a lot of good things about him.  I was pretty surprised that the writer felt that Justin Smoak could be around there for the Astros.  Smoak is probably the best hitter that we've had at South Carolina and would certainly be an incredible draft pick for the Astros...I would love to see him come to Houston.

Anyone have any thoughts on guys that might be around at #10?

was that Borkowski's first appearance since Cooper's fit?

No...he pitched last Sunday, I believe.  Either way...he still scares the crap out of me.

After Pence walkoff, this was the headline on Astros.com:

There he Goes: Pence makes Crew none the richer

She constantly tries this approach to headlines.  I can't tell you how many Backe headlines she has written have made me want to slam my head against a wall.

"Astros Backe in Action"
"Astros Look To Bounce Backe"

There have been many many more...and I expect another one today.

Sadaharu Oh is an interesting pick, since he didn't play in MLB.  Anyone want to speculate who would be considered the best MLB player to wear number 1?

Otis Nixon? haha

Not just fun, there is always a part of you that believes that they can and will come back.

Exactly.  Last night watching the 8th inning you could just feel it.  Once you saw Tejada get on base you knew something was going to happen.  (at least I felt that way)

What really has excited me is watching the aggressiveness on the basepaths.  Berkman with 6 steals on the year?!

What do you guys think of Sampson's chances right now to get another start?  If the Astros decide to move him to the pen who would you guys like to see in his spot?

Hey Emo, how did you like the spanking that your Cocks took at the hands of my Tigers?

Never saw it coming...I really thought my guys would take two of three.  Unfortuantely for us LSU was getting hot at the right time.  Looks like we'll take 2 of 3 from the Gators this weekend though.

I haven't seen very many games this year (being out of market) but I didn't realize how much pop that Geary has on his fastball.

Roy is a real estate hurricane occurring especially in the region of the Philippines or the China sea?

Or a bad, overweight, professional wrestler in the 1980s.

Jennings on the DL in May.  I would have definitely lost the pool.  I figured by week three of the season he'd be gone.

I've been so offensive minded the past couple of years (due to the struggle) that I didn't weigh the defensive side of things as heavily as I probably should have.  Good points.

Talk Zone / Waiting on Matsui
« on: April 03, 2008, 12:33:26 pm »
I read earlier today that Matsui is getting ready to start his rehab assignment.  While it will be nice to have him finally make his debut in a couple of weeks, I don't really feel any urgency for him to come back.

Maybe I feel perfectly fine with Loretta at second, or Blum, or maybe it is because I don't feel he's going to have too much of an impact on this team.

Am I alone in this thought process?

I, like you, was very happy with Michael Bourn.  It is exciting to see the Astros have a speed threat on the bases again, even though Bard isn't known for his prowess at throwing out runners.

I felt that Roy O was a little rattled after the line shot back at him, I don't expect him to be Jekyll and Hyde like that for the rest of the year.  Just a tough outing against a tough pitcher like Peavy.

As for Tejada...he made a couple of plays, especially the one behind second to throw out the runner which I was pleased with.

Pence didn't look comfortable at the plate last night, and I realize that Lee isn't there for his fielding, but it seemed to take him longer than normal to get to the grounders to LF.

I'm excited to watch Backe tonight, and I think we'll see a few runs on the board tonight once the guys settle in.

Unfortunately, living outside of the Houston market, I have to watch Astros/Cubs games on WGN.  Last year they referred to the 2007 season as "The Championship Season on WGN"

I don't know why year after year...choke after choke people continue to pick them.  They'll find a way to meltdown around late August.

I was, too, reading Berkman's comments concerning the release of Woody Williams.  Does it seem to you guys that after most Astros moves that Berkman or someone criticizes management these days?  I'm not saying management is above criticism...but it seems to be too frequent.

Thoughts?

Jacksonian-

Good to see you here...the other board was absolutely dead...figured I'd come here for more discussion.  Seems like I got it  :D

By the way, just so we all know...

ColdCock is a reference to the University of South Carolina.  I'm a Gamecock fan...I'm used to disappointment :D

Very encouraging place here...  ::)

Listen...forgive me for not reading this site since it's inception...I heard something, thought it was funny, figured I'd share with fellow Astros fans.

I wasn't going to "introduce" myself with my first post, those are simply boring.

FYI...I don't care if you guys "pile on" go for it...I've learned enough about life to realize that you can't take anything too seriously or else it'll kill you.

Maybe one day you'll be able to enjoy a laugh or a smile.  We're four days away from Opening Day...maybe that'll make some of you happier.

Go Astros!

You know what I never understand?  The elitist mentality that some message board posters have.  Take yourself a little less seriously.  Makes life more fun!

So I'm sitting here waiting on the 2008 Astros marketing slogan, which I'm sure is going to be genius as always, and I began to wonder what might make a good slogan for this team?  (I'm sure if Footer can use Backe's name as a pun she will)

How about...

"From Killer B's To Killer B-12"

Yes...I really am an Astros fan...not a flaming at all, just having a little fun.
