Roy and the boys did all they could do. A typically dominant performance by Oswalt against the Dicketies was stained by a zany 9th inning that saw a laugher turn into a save situation for Papa Grande. No matter. Save #43 was in the books and all that was left was to check the out-of-town scoreboard.Read More

With apologies to Smithville, I was going to title this Hope Floats to promote a running theme, but that movie just sucked so fucking bad, there’s no way I could do it. Honestly, I’d still be mad at my wife for making me watch that insipid heap of shit, but she was mad enough at herself anyway, so no need to pile on. I guess if I still haven’t let it go after 10 years, there’s no reason the Smithville Chamber of Commerce would, either. Enjoy the walking tour, everyone.

Anyway… so yeah, there was a baseball game. Sorry.

Molony game wrap

In this must-win late season game, the home dwellers of Minute Maid Park let victory slip through their grasp as a heaping pile of baserunning blunders sunk the good ship Astros on this night, losing to the lowly Reds 2-1 and basically eliminating themselves from playoff contention. Read More

Languishing behind 2 teams for a playoff spot, these mid-September games can seem all but meaningless. Still, the Astros won again today but it may possibly be too little, too late. Read More

Box score

Alberto Arias had 21 innings of big-league experience entering tonight’s game, all in relief with Colorado. Naturally, he went 9 up, 9 down with 5 strikeouts on his first trip through the lineup. Some creative baserunning by Nyjer Morgan, no doubt distracted by the thought of “where the hell did I get this first name?”, resulted in a 3-2 putout on a thrown away pickoff in the fourth. That play allowed Arias to survive a scoreless fourth despite 2 hits and 2 walks.

Mark Saccomanno had zero major league at bats entering tonight’s game, but fortunately, mom and dad live in town so they could attend his major league debut. Hope they hadn’t hit the concession stand, because it lasted one pitch. Well, one pitch and a trip around the bases, as Saccomanno became the 25th player in MLB history to homer on the first pitch he ever faced.

Wesley the Kid made it close in the sixth, but the bullpen was able to rally and nail down a 3-2 victory to close the gab with the Brewers to 5 games.
