Astros 5
Phillies 3

The Astros won. Salvaged a road split. Phillies were probably a bit hung over but they still need momentum and home field wouldn’t hurt. Anyway, Twinkie slapped a gapper in the 1st that brought home 2 and the lead held, with help from Miggy’s 2-runner in the 6th and RBI single in the 7th. Paulino was on, with run support this time and that translated into a W. Valverde did his best Lidge imitation but held on.

Some of you know, my girlfriend of 15+ years is a baseball fan, and a Phillies fan. She hails from the west suburbs of Philadelphia and is no bandwagonner. Of course, recently her passion has shot up a few notches but the fact that we spent a good part of our initial courtship period at spring training games and that we continue to enjoy baseball together are things that help keep both of us happy. She’s too young to remember 1980 with any passion and for me, ’86 was far worse personally so we’ve never had much to hate about the other’s team. She backed the Astros in ’04 and ’05 when I was preoccupied with them every waking hour. I couldn’t embrace the Phillies last year, the Rays have earned 2nd place in this fan’s heart and she understood. They’re her #2 as well.

So here I am. The Phillies clinch their 2nd straight division title against the Astros. No big deal really, the Good Guys have been out of it for a few weeks now since late July. It’s time for me to step up as a supportive boyfriend and do my best to share her excitement for her childhood team, right? At least refrain from the wry comments when she wears her Victorino jersey to work every other day, right? Sheepishly smile at the ear-splitting screams with every Phillies base hit, right? Nod in acceptance when she suggests Chase Utley be added to her “list”, right?

It would be bad if I latched on the the Dodgers’ bandwagon, right?

This is my last recap of the year and I want to thank the entire SnS team for letting me bloviate once or twice a week on their dime. Noe, Andy, HH, Waldo, Arky, Spack, you continue to maintain the greatest Astros fan site on the web. I especially want to thank pravata, who gave a ton of his time and effort to cut through the clutter and help me find information I could use. Also, to BudGirl, who picked up the tough task of scheduling and recruiting recap writers and did it well. Sorry for the one I missed. Thanks to the other recap writers who keep the bar high and to everyone who actually realizes there is a SnS front page and reads these things. To the series preview writers who blow me away with their creativity. The columnistas whose talent and wit seem endless. And finally, the Bus Ride guys. I spend the least amount of time there because, quite honestly, the depth of the information there intimidates me. The most comprehensive Astros minor league fan sites out there.

May the Phillies repeat, the void be short, and the 2010 SnS Opening Day/Cabrito Fest be the biggest ever!

Roy’s effort just enough

Roy Oswalt gave what he had last night and it was just enough to help his team mates – many of them tasting the big-league cup of joe for the first time – experience what it takes to scratch and claw and fight from behind to get a win. They almost did.

“He was inspirational,” said Wilton Lopez, one of the young pitchers freshly up to the big club. “He set things up nicely for us to show what we’re really made of. I just wish we could have won.”

Roy wasted no time. His second pitch was blasted into the right-center bullpen. Not feeling he’d done enough, he hung a slider to the 2nd batter for a double. As a gift to his friend Chipper Jones, he tossed a change up thigh-high and a 2-run hole was dug. Next batter, single. Next, sac fly. 3-0.

Chris Johnson, getting his first start as a major leaguer, was impressed. “I saw a guy who battled out there. The concentration, the effort, it’s no wonder he’s had such success for so long.”

After the Astros got one back, Roy didn’t let up for the 2nd as he got the first 2 Braves to single. Then, after striking out Chipper for fun, he unloaded a double for McCann and singles to Anderson and LaRoche to leave things at 6-1. His work done, Roy K’d the last 2 batters to end the 2nd.

“I love watching him pitch,” said Billy Sadler, who’s been up before with the Giants. “He’s a real pro and he’ll do what it takes to win, or to not.”

Thanks to 94CougarGrad for providing the headline for today’s “recap”. My Thursday was…eventful…and none of the events was actually watching the Astros game. I got a good kick out of reading the Game Zone though, so I recommend reading it if you missed the game too.

Marlins Astros Baseball

Wandy’s 103rd pitch was the second straight single he gave up to begin the 9th and Coop had seen enough. His previous 8 innings were outstanding, the only blemish an unearned run in the 1st after a couple of walks and an error. His command and his curve had the Marlins guessing all night but 2 on, no out and the heart of the order up made Coop call for Papa Grande.

Aided by a fine catch by Beaker in right center (his second highlighter of the night), Jose got the job done and the Astros walked away with a series win against a team struggling to keep pace in the playoff chase.

The offensive firepower came from a 2-run bomb by Lee and a PENCE!!! solo dinger. Even Wandy got into the act in the 5th with a nifty show-bunt/swing-away double that scored Q. Later in the 5th, the Astros had the bases loaded with 1 out but Fish reliever Christhian Martinez got Carlos to ground into the 6-3 DP.

Another home weekend series upcoming with the fresh-from-being-swept DBacks.

Astros 2
Marlins 9

W: West | L: Hampton

astros.com

Game Zone

I had a bad feeling about this game as I powered up the Samsung in the bottom of the 1st. The HD image appeared just as Jorge Cantu’s 2-run shot bounced around the empty seats in left and it seemed my fears were founded. Another 2-out single and I wondered what the over/under was on Coop pulling Hampton.

Fast forward to the bottom of the 5th with the Astros trailing by just one. Since the 1st, Hampton had knuckled down and kept the Fish scoreless while his RBI single in the top of the inning cut their deficit in half. First batter, #8 hitter Ronny Paulino, Hampton grooved a first-pitch fastball and Paulino sent that fucker way out in center, out where they don’t even sit for Dolphin games. Still, Hampton got out of the 5th with no more damage and looked to be fine.

Again??!!

Again??!!

Imagine my surprise, just as I was finished marveling at this wonderfully bad local commercial, Chris Sampson showed up on my screen, WARMING UP ON THE MOUND, AGAIN!!! Apparently, Hampton suffered a shoulder strain at some point in the game. The details of the 6th are moot. Sampson faced the entire Marlins line-up, retiring only 2 by the time Coop woke up and put Bazardo in to get the last out. 6 runs. 9-1 Marlins. Sampson was sent to Round Rock immediately following the game.

The Astros are now 7.5 back in the Central and 8 back in the wildcard with teams-o-plenty above them. And now, it’s on to Wrigley North for 3 with the Brewfarts.

Personal Message

A shout out to my college friend Terry who’s a coach with McAllister Park Little League in San Antonio. The Texas West team beat Texas East (Bridge City) last night to become the first team from San Antonio to make it to Williamsport. Congratulations, McAllister Park! Go get ’em!
