Right up front, I didn’t see but about 5 minutes of this game. The 5 minutes I saw though, were the deciding moments of the contest. Game 1, the Astros scored a bunch in the first that held up for a win. Game 2, the Jakes jumped on Wandy in the first and never looked back. The first inning played big again tonight but unfortunately, it was an Oswalt inning.®

Things started out well enough for Sparky, 1-2-3 and a run by his offense in the first to give him a small cushion. Then the hits came, followed by the runs. Roy struggled just about the entire outing, giving up 5 runs in 6 innings, never looking like the ace he needs to be. Despite a 3-run comeback to tie it, the ‘pen couldn’t hold on and the Astros dropped the opener of this 4-gamer 7-5.

The Astros looked overmatched today. Chris Sampson was leaving the ball up and the top half of the Giants line up was teeing off on him. With Miggy on mandated rest, the ball kept finding accidental shortstop Loretta. Tim Lincecum had 10 Ks through his 6 innings. 100 freakin’ degrees on a May day in San Francisco. Astros down 6-0 early? Hell, why not take a nap?

The pesky gNats had just scored two off of a fast-tiring Brandon Backe to go up 4-1 in the 6th before the side was retired and Backe’s night was done. For some reason, I still felt like the Astros were going to win. They certainly have shown throughout this 5-gamer that they’re never out of it.

One night after Dan Haren held his thumb down on the Astros offense for most of the 7+ innings he pitched, the boys seemed determined to not let that happen again.
