Astros Recap

The moment finally arrived. This has been one of the most interesting seasons to date in my Astros viewing history. I think for most of us the ups and downs of a season were not the fun roller coaster we usually enjoy. It seemed like all the ups led to worse downs than we normally expect. We had the ups of Wandy’s break out season, getting to one game of the division lead before the All-Star break, Bourn finally being inserted into the lead-off spot (and doing a good job there) and players hitting homerun and base hit milestones. But those downs just came a lot more often. There were the reactionary line-ups, manager moves, mismanaged benches, arms falling off of pitchers (and sometimes their legs), player discontent, and so on and so on. But through it all we watched and wanted our team to end up with different results.

I’ve been giving this moment a lot of thought over the last couple weeks. A lot of people use Labor Day as the marking of the end of summer, for me it is the baseball season. There are no more offers of “hey I have an extra ticket to the game, want to go?”, or “I’m going to the game tonight, are you? Want to meet up?”, and even the “did you watch the Astros last night?” For many of us, there is football and other events that will consume our lives like the Astros do during the summer. But there is still the moment of “damm it is really over isn’t it?” that comes at the end of a season. It is very sad for me.

I’ll drive by Minute Maid Park off and on during the offseason and miss the boys, those banners on the outside just aren’t the same as seeing them on the field. The playoffs aren’t the same when my boys aren’t in it (I’m rooting for Minnesota at this moment, but they may not even make it).

But one of the things I miss the most is what I call my baseball friends. You all. The TalkZone seems to slow down and there seems to be sadness about. We all just wait for the Astros do something, almost anything (be careful what you wish) to have some baseball to discuss.

I miss the get-togethers where we share a beer (or many), tease each other and just hang out whether online or in person. Many of you have been and have become very dear friends to me. And you all are what the Astros give me each season and for that I can not be disappointed in the season.

I don’t expect a lot of splash in the off-season by the Astros’ front office. Sure there is a lot to fix on this team, a lot, but I don’t think there is a budget in Drayton’s office that is going to allow them to go out and buy us a World Series. I think we are going to have to wait a good 2-3 years for the prospects in the farm system to mature and hope the next version of Bagwell, Biggio and Caminiti come along in their own form.

We seemed ready for this moment, waited for this moment that seemed like we were ready for yet not, at the same time.

I hope everyone has a happy and safe off season, see you around.

I don’t think anyone not rooting for a team in the NL East cares much about this game or this series. This Astros loss brought the Phillies to the magic number of one.

There was no GameZone to look for commentary on the game.

Last Friday Night I’m Spending At Home This Year.

If you were at this game then you know that you know that you had an opportunity to get a collectible cap and “coupons” for tickets for next season. Unfortunately an opportunity to get an Astros win was not available on the night.

Astros Highlights:

Kazuo Matsui went 2 for 4 on the night, with a homerun.

Tim Byrdak and Chad Paronto each pitched a scoreless inning of baseball.

Reds Highlights:

Joey Votto and Juan Francisco had pretty good nights at the plate.

Matt Maloney went 7 innings giving up 2 runs.

Game Analysis:

There really isn’t much to analyze at this point in the season. There doesn’t seem to be much interest by either fans or players.

Bench Tidbits:

Have a friend from NYC in town this weekend. Glad her sister decided to have all of us go to the Astros game. The company was great, the game as noted above was not. We went to a bar at Main and Alabama called the Big Top. I rather liked the place. You pretty much just sit around drinking. Many of you may be surprised, but I didn’t have a single drink on the night. Yeah, BudGirl didn’t drink.

Plans for Saturday include the UH–Texas Tech game. I am so excited. I have no idea who is going to win this game, but I am really hoping UH shows up and plays great football.

I am planning to save a life on Sunday by donating blood after madd, then I am going to the Texans game. I love free tickets!! Kick ass!!

One interesting story about an encounter at MMP Friday night. My friend Ana and I get our “coupons,” then become designated drivers for free coupons for a small drink, then continue onto our seats. While on the escalator we encounter a woman with a large stack of “coupons.” Apparently some guy behind us decides to ask why she has so many of the “coupons.” She tells him something, which we were trying to ignore. Then on the next section of the escalator she decides to ask me about the situation. I don’t know why she thought it was of interest to me. But she starts saying how she asked how many she could have and at least three different people told her she could have as many as she wanted. So, she proceeded to take as many as she wanted. I don’t think anyone really missed out on the “coupons.”

The thing that kind of amuses me about the whole thing is that the lady was thinking she had “season tickets” since she had so many of them. I don’t think she realized they were only good for Monday-Thursday games in April and May. She wanted to get something and took more than she really needed. I just hope she left the game happy with her “season tickets.”

It is time for me to get ready for the Cougars. ‘Eat’em up Coogs!!!!

Game Analysis:

It really seems to me like there are a lot of players wearing a Houston Astros uniform that are ready for the off-season. These guys don’t want to be there. It really makes me wonder why I keep going to the games. (Probably because I still like watching baseball.) There was bad pitching (no new surprise there), lack of situational hitting (no new surprise there), and just an overall apathy about what was happening.

I have even noticed that Hunter Pence, the one who always seemed excited to be out there, blah, blah, blah, doesn’t even have that little jaunty step anymore. You know it’s got to be bad when he doesn’t seem to okay.

Bench Tidbits:

So, tonight I am going to the Improv to see Josh Wolf. Should be a fun show. I watch him on Chelsea Lately and laugh and laugh. Plus, they are recording the show so it should be great material or the dvd will be a total bust.

Monday night I hosted some friends for a Dancing With the Stars party. That was fun. I made jambalaya. It turned out great. I had none left, which was bad since I ended up having only a salad for lunch on Tuesday.

I’m still trying to score some tickets for Saturday’s Texas Tech v. UH game. I might have two, but no definite confirmation on it yet. Robertson Stadium should be a rocking place Saturday. Seems everyone at UH is excited for the team. I was rather hoping Tech would beat UT on Saturday so they’d be on a high and unprepared for UH. Now, I’m pretty sure that isn’t going to happen. Hopefully Coach Sumlin will have the team ready to Go! Fight! Win! Saturday.

A friend from NYC, no, not Alkie, will be in town this weekend. For some reason we are going to the Astros game on Friday. It will be my last game to see in Minute Maid Park this year. Makes me rather sad.

No other tidbits to share, but check out Craig’s Series Preview for the Wednesday’s game information.

I saw this video on TyinTampa’s facebook page and think it is totally worth sharing. You will be glad you watched it.

I still had a great evening. Went to dinner with a bunch of girlfriends. Was a lot of fun tonight.

This was a fun game to watch. The Astros offense showed up (again, they were there yesterday also) and there was some good pitching.

Astros Highlights:

Bud Norris notched his 5th win by tossing 6 innings of 6 hit one run baseball. The one run was a homerun by Andy LaRoche.

Offensively, Kazuo Matsui hd a nice night. He went 3 for 4 scoring 2 runs and getting 2 RBIs. Maybe he’s going to end his season on a good note.

Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee contributed homeruns.

The Astros Bullpen, yes, they are part of my highlights. They pitched 3 innings of one hit baseball. Nice, real nice job.

Pirates Highlights:

Andy LaRoche hit a homerun.

Bench Tidbits:

Towards the end of the game, a discussion between my friend and I began about the team. She is of the opinion that the whole organization needs to be gone, from Ed Wade to Jason Michaels, including most of the front office. We agreed on some things, but not everything. She does not blame Cooper as much as I do, but she does blame Wade more than I do. It was a very good conversation to have at a baseball game.

This was the first game I’ve seen a fan taken out on a stretcher due to a foul ball. Delwyn Young hit a screamer into the stands. I hope the lady that got hit is okay. That ball bounced off of her fast and hard.

I was disappointed in the Astros as a whole tonight though in one regard tonight. There was a nice tribute to the Heroes that serve us and there were no Astros that came to pay tribute. I’m not sure why, but I hope it was a good reason. We did notice Ed Wade walk out of the dugout when the team seemed to filter into the dugout. So, maybe there was some kind of team meeting. I just really wish they had been there to pay tribute.
