He Said, He Said

Cooper in the post-game conference stated that Bud Norris had the one mistake and he wasn’t able to recover from it. He also stated that Nelasco was the same pitcher that he saw in Florida last week (Art Howe disagreed with that in a very polite way). Astros spanked Nelasco for 10 runs. Hmmm, you really think it was the same pitcher. Yeah, it is the same guy, but he didn’t pitch the same. A three-hitter. Norris said his change up wasn’t there

When Michael Bourn was interviewed after the game, he mentioned things like, “first pitch strike,” “kept us off balance,” and “sometimes the pitcher is better and you have to tip your cap to them.” Hmm, I just have to wonder what the hell Cooper was watching. He said nothing like this.

I have to admit I don’t like Cooper and I really don’t like him talking about players making mistakes. Be careful tossing those stones at glass houses Mr. Cooper.

Astros Highlights:

Carlos Lee hit a two-run homerun in the first inning.

Marlins Highlights:

Ricky Nolasco and his three-hitter. Great job mixing the pitches and making adjustments after the last game he pitched against the Astros.

Bench Tidbits:

No new adventures to report this week, but I went to dinner with a bunch of girlfriends tonight. Great conversation and good food. Life can be good.

I hope that Limey’s prediction comes true before the end of this series.

Good Luck to Pudge Rodriguez in his trade to the Texas Rangers. Hope you can take them to the playoffs. I think his playoff experience is going to be a huge contribution for that team in the final run of the season.

Check out GreatBagwell’sBeard’s Series Preview for information about the rest of the series.

There was a little bit of action in the GameZone if one is interested.

A ride to Sticksville.

Wow, what a ride the Astros took us on last night. They go into the bottom of the 6th with a 5 run lead and lose the lead by the end of the 7th. And then in the top of the ninth, they come roaring back to tie it up. Eventually losing in the 11th.

I’m not really that upset they lost. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like them to lose, but rather am no longer surprised when they do.

Astros Highlights:

Tim Byrdak and Jose Valverde pitched three innings of scoreless baseball.

Michael Bourn went 2 for 5 on the night with a walk and 2 stolen bases. Have I said lately I love that kid?

Miguel Tejada was 3 for 5 on the night. He also had 3 RBIs.

Marlins Highlights:

Hanley Ramirez was 3 for 6 on the night. I just want the chance to say this kid is pretty freaking good.

Game Analysis:

Not much to analysis after this one. Roy Oswalt was doing good, got into trouble, Jeff Fulchino could not bail him out to save the lead and win the game. Hopefully Oswalt will have better results next time. There is still a chance today and Thursday for the Astros to avoid the sweep. Check out Craig’s Series Preview for more information.

Bench Tidbits:

Well, I am going to do my best to provide a glimpse into a BudGirl Tuesday night adventure to Sticksville.

It started out fine. I set the dvr to record the Astros game while I got in my ride to Gary’s Spot in Tomball, Texas (also known as Sticksville). Why would I be going to Sticksville you wonder? Well, because I am a nice person and a good friend. Why else would I agree to go see a band, Saraph from Constantine, Michigan, on a Tuesday night? Because they are from one of my best friend’s hometown.

So, we began the journey at 9:00 pm. Leaving the comfort of inside the 610 Loop in Houston. Everything seems to be fine, until we realize there is only country and no sign of “city” life. Yes, we went to far down 2920 trying to find Gary’s Spot. So, we turn around and finally find the spot (which happens to be at the corner of 249 and 2920).

So, we pay the exorbitant $3 cover charge and go inside. Instantly we are reminded why Houston, Texas is great. NO SMOKING!! I still smell like a cigarette. So, we grab a table and start talking to one of the guys that my friend knows from the band. I have to admit, he’s a cool kid.

Well, they finally perform around 11:00 or so. They are pretty good. Raw talent, but pretty good. During their performance we are approached by two guys, at different times. Both are in the band performing next. So, we commit ourselves to staying to watch Joan Red. I did enjoy this band a tad bit more.

All that may not seem like that big of an adventure, but don’t forget, I’m an angel. In Gary’s Spot is a pole, for anyone to use to dance at any time. I made the mistake of making eye contact with the manager (or owner or whomever he was) of the bar. Next thing I know there is a pair of chaps that I am being offered to use while dancing with the pole. I politely declined. I did get us two free shots though.

There was one chick that loved the pole. She got all the attention she wanted because of it. I rather think her parents are extremely proud of her. (meow)

I think the novelty of two girls, who did not look like chain-smoking-trailer-park girls were a hit on the night. (meow)

Thankfully around 1:00 we are done at the bar. We’ve taken pictures with the band, and other patrons, finished our beer and start the adventure back.

If there is one thing you should know about me, it is that I am directionally challenged. It is almost a guarantee that I will get lost. Well, last night was not one of those nights I am pleased to say. It was my friend’s misdirection that led us about 30 miles to Hempstead. BTW, there is a Buc-ee’s on the way to Hempstead.

So, on the night, we got lost twice. Hit on by members of the band. Freaked out by the gay guy I thought from behind was a chick. Ended up smelling like a cigarette. And my first opportunity and encouragement to dance with a stripper pole. What an adventure? I can’t wait to tell my mom.

Sweet Sunday

Astros Recap
Yahoo Recap

I have to admit, today was a sweet Sunday. The Astros won and I spent the day at the beach. I can only share what looks to be the highlights due to the reactions in the Game Zone.

Astros Highlights:

Wandy Rodriguez went 7 innings of shut out baseball. He gave up 5 hits and 3 walks. Good day Mr. Rodriguez.

Michael Bourn went 1 for 3, with a walk. He made a great defensive play. I seriously love the way this kid plays.

Geoff Blum got the runs on the board with his 2-run home run in the 4th inning.

Game Analysis:

The Astros won the series against the Brewers. I would not get to excited if I were you though. The Saturday game they lost was a total beat down. Unfortunately, Bazardo got beat to shit in the game. I’ll leave the discussion of whether he was used inappropriately up to others. But with Cooper managing the team, it would not surprise me that he was used worse than a woman in a wham-bam thank you ma’am kind of way.

Bench Tidbits:

I am looking for recommendations for any eateries in Surfside. We went to the beach there today and have no idea if there are any good eateries there.

George Strait serenaded me Saturday evening. I don’t care how old that man is, he is still AWESOME. It is almost silly how many of his songs bring back memories for me. I also enjoyed Blake Shelton. He did a good job and looks nice too.

Special thanks to Limey for making sure the boy that knocked my drink out my hand replaced it. That was a very gentlemanly thing to do. That was a fun night. I’m glad Andy threw himself a birthday party. Also, apologies to Beauty Queen for not getting back to you to confirm that I would be attending.

Astros head to Florida for some games this week. Let’s hope the weather is good, the Astros bats are hot, and their pitching worthy of us. Well, they probably need pitching better than what would be worthy of us. Check out Craig’s Series Preview for more in-depth information regarding the series.

Meh, the Astros lost.

I went to this game and the best part of the night was when the 3 1/2 year old with us sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame. We left after that because she was done. It is probably the only time we have indulged her and left early. I guess she knew how it was going to end.

There is some interesting theories about how the Astros lost this game, but they only had 4 hits in through six innings. I think that had lots to do with it. This team does not seem to be playing with the fire they need to be able to overcome injuries. Every team has injuries throughout the season and they have to overcome them. Granted the Astros have some really tough ones right now, but such is the life dealt by the BaseBallGods.

Bench Tidbits:

Read Alkie talking to himself during the game in the GameZone.

Andymas. Andy’s having a birthday party Friday, anyone want to go? Granted I do have another birthday party to attend that day. Freida, Andy, Debbie and Darrin all have the same birthday. Early happy birthday shout outs to you all. (Granted Debbie and Darrin don’t read my recaps, hell Freida and Andy probably don’t either.) But it’s the thought that counts.

Not surprising to me is that someone is going to get pissed off by deciding what kind of music to like by Texas performers.

Read Limey’s Series Preview for information about today’s afternoon game.

Oh and I have a ticket to the Eagles-Cowboys game January 3, 2010. Yee-haw.

Astros Win, Yet Lose

Astros 11, Cubs 6

Astros Recap
Yahoo Recap

Well, this game started out great Michael Bourn leads off with a first pitch single, Jeff Keppinger follows with a single. Then Miguel Tejada hits into what could have been a 3 run homerun but Fukedome snags his hit at the wall only scoring Bourn.

Onto the bottom of the second the Astros go. Roy Oswalt seemed to be doing good, then Ivan Rodriguez goes to the mound and that’s when the “oh shits” and other kind of comments from Astros fans start. Roy leaves the game with a lower back strain. Great news.

So, Wesley Wright comes in to finish off Milton Bradley and the second inning. Wesley continues to pitch 2 other innings giving up 3 runs, which I’m going to cut him some slack since right after or right before the end of the game he goes to the hospital with possible appendicitis. (ETA: Ends up being dehydration.)

So, in comes Jeff Fulchino to save the day. He pitches 3 innings, but also gives up 3 runs. Good news is he did not turn over the lead.

Tim Byrdak came into pitch a scoreless 8th frame and Jose Valverde closed it out.

Astros Highlights:

Jeff Keppinger is hot, hot, hot. He went 4 for 5, 3 runs, 3 RBIs, and no injuries. Awesome day at the “friendly confines.”

Miguel Tejada wasn’t shabby either, he went 2 for 4 with 5 RBIs. One of those hits landed in the fencing so the fans couldn’t throw the ball back. Sometimes I am so proud of the Astros.

Michael Bourn went 3 for 5 and a walk on the night scoring 3 runs. He had a pretty good catch out there in centerfield also. Seriously, who doesn’t like watching this kid play?

Astros Lowlights:

10 walks given up by the Astros. The Cubs had more walks than hits.

All the injuries.

Game Analysis:

I am very proud of the way the Astros played on this night. The Astros used 5 men on the night while the Cubs used 6 to lose. Hopefully a game like this can help a team keep chugging along, but I have to wonder if Music Man is still willing to wait until Thursday to decide if the Astros should be buyers or sellers.

I also think the ending to Monday night’s game didn’t sit well with the Astros and they came to take names last night, and they did. Hopefully they continue to take names since they have 2 more in Chicago and then go to St. Louis for the weekend.

Bench Tidbits:

The GameZone had something happening in there.

Mets 4, Astros 5

Astros Recap

Well the Astros are now 4 games over .500 baseball. Willing is so much better than losing. Of course, it doesn’t help that the Cardinals and Cubs won also. I hear a lot of talk about being a 1.5 of the lead, but I don’t really care about that right now. The Astros just need to keep on winning, especially while some key players are on the DL. If the Astros continue to win that other stuff will take care of itself.

Astros Highlights:

Mike Hampton was only allowed to pitched 5.2 innings of baseball. He had given up all the runs the Mets scored on the night, but he hit the magic number of 100 (actually 101) and was pulled. He also took a Johan Santana pitch to the Crawford Boxes. Very nice Mr. Hampton.

Michael Bourn, Miguel Tejada and Ivan Rodriguez each had two hits on the night. Bourn had a stole base and an extra base due to an error but Miggy couldn’t get him home.

Hunter Pence had an outfield assist aided by the punch/tag to the jaw by Pudge. Very cool play.

Astros Lowhights:

Astros left 11 men on base. I really wish they would not have left the bases loaded in the 7th and creamed the Mets with a solid single, double, triple or homerun.

Game Analysis:

I don’t know what has happened to Hunter the last couple weeks, but it seems like he has reverted to his bad habits. Someone needs to visit with him, and I don’t mean Cooper. Sean Berry or one of the veterans on the team. He was doing well, but seems like he has started pressing again or something. Maybe he doesn’t handle wins very well.

I am beginning to wonder if the Astros were to win a 100 games, would Cooper forfeit all the rest saying they had played enough and were tired? Damm, I seriously hate juding pitchers on pitch counts. I thought Hampton looked like he could have finished the 6th. Hampton’s demeanor walking to the dugout seemed the same.

Bench Tidbits:

Today is the 2nd SnS game. Hope to see everyone there. Hope everyone had a good time. Hope no one ends up in jail or a hospital.

Check out Mark’s world famous series preview. Good reading.
