This is great news...I called into the Kevin Kennedy MLB on XM show and talked a little bit about the reasons that Coop was fired, but unfortunately I ended with "Tony La Russa would be great for this franchise."  I had radio and caffeine jitters, and I apologize for that one, I couldn't think of anything to say.  I really meant to recommend Brad Ausmus but my mind went blank (its default state).

Actually that idea isn't completely insane...

Last year at about this time, there was considerable rumor and speculation that La Russa wanted a change of scenery away from St. Louis.  Supposedly, he wanted a 'challenge' to start all over again somewhere else.  Now it is a year later and his contract is up for renewal in St. Louis....

Obviously, the Cards are in a nice position to contend for the next couple of years - but if the 'Smartest Man in Baseball' really wants a real challenge, we'd definitely qualify.

On the other hand (Reality Check) - La Russa would demand way more autonomy and control over player personnel than the grocer (or Wade/Smith) are ever likely to give him.

Compromise - Dave Duncan, the Card's pitching coach looks to be ready for the top job somewhere and is allegedly good at player development.  This sounds ideal, assuming we have any young players to develop.

Wild Idea from Left Field - Bobby Valentine.  He'd bring aggressive 'Japan-style' play, if nothing else.  It would probably end badly... but it would be amusing to watch.

/almost makes me nostalgic for Jimmy Williams (at least he demanded that the players learn basic fundamentals, like bunting)

mixed feelings on this one... I'm sure they're going to ruin it.

What are the odds of fitting in a Green Arrow cameo appearance?  The Adams & O'Neil Green Lantern/Green Arrow books of the early 70's were the absolute highlight of the series.

Another vote for 'best available' defensive player on the board.  DE, OL, CB and Safety are all significant weaknesses.  My personal guess is Outside Linebacker for the first pick.

I played with him in the 40+ winter baseball league one year in the early 90's for a couple of games.  Nice down to earth guy.  I got to bat against him once... took my three strikes and happily walked back to the bench glad to still have my head attached to my body.

He could still throw 90+ (no movement though) but had no control over where it was going.  Accordingly, he aimed for about a foot outside the plate to avoid nailing folks.

.250 avg. 48 dingers 146 ribbies 19 errors 198 K's

Actually that sounds just like a modern Rob Deer to me, albeit with a better batting average.  I thought it resembled Dave Kingman too, but his K numbers were never quite that bad.

WTF?  Trading one of the few legitimate prospects that we have for a pitcher that we could have picked up for free in just a few more days off of the waiver wire?

I just don't understand this bonehead trade at all.

That assumes we're not 20 games out by the break.  Depends how many 8-10 games we lose the first half.

If we're within shot of the Wild Card getting two solid starting pitchers ready for the second half would be just as good a making mid-season trade.  If the season is another blow-out, we still have two *relatively cheap* starting pitchers that can be either built around for 09, traded for prospects (i.e. Beltran 2.0), or held onto for offering Arbitration (potential draft picks).

Looks like win-win-win anyway you slice it.

/BIG assumption on getting either/or both Benson & Prior
//leans towards the blow-out prediction = rebuilding if we don't get either (or another reasonable starter)

I really like these two places for special occasions.

Fogo de Chao Churrascaria
    8250 Westheimer Rd    Houston TX   77063   713.978.6500

Nelore Churrascaria Brazilian Steakhouse
    4412 Montrose Blvd    Houston TX   77006   713.395.1050

Both are Brazilian/Argentine Steak Houses that feature all-you-can-eat superb quality meat.  Fogo has been around longer and is a bit more upscale, but I really enjoy Nelore just as much and they're a little less expensive.

A cheap rental for about 1/2 a season, even if he's not ready to go until the All-Star break.  I'd say do a one year with an option.  Relatively low money up front but maybe load it with lots of incentives.  Bargain basement high reward/low risk.  What's not to like?

/likes the idea of Prior & Benson as our #2 & #3 starters for the 2nd half pennant run

Talk Zone / Re: Astros better make another trade quick
« on: December 20, 2007, 08:42:00 am »
I've always thought of Berkman as being WYSIWYG.  What you see (and hear) is what you get.
Says what's on his mind and is brutally honest, but usually pretty good natured.  I think he's trying to assume the leader role of the clubhouse now.

Ok, Drayton doesn't want to rebuild and wants to win NOW while the Central is probably the weakest division in baseball.  Fine.  But by the trading deadline if (when) we are 10 games out of the lead I would trade both Lance and Oswalt (yes, they both have no trade clauses but would probably waive that to go to a contender) for an obscene package of can't miss prospects that could set us up for the next decade.

Talk Zone / Re: Stark on Astros
« on: December 20, 2007, 08:35:54 am »
Yep.  I just don't see anything left in AAA to call up when the injuries start occurring.

Conventional Wisdom is usually that in trades the team getting the single best overall player "wins", so that in theory our 3-1 deals netting the 'better' player should be a net improvement for the club.  But I just don't see much bench depth left and nothing worth mentioning left in the minors until AA level.

I won't even mention our lack of a bona fide #2 or #3 starter still.  Oops., nm.

I have to think that there MUST be a FA pitcher (or preferably two) still to be signed, and maybe more than a handful of spring training invites for the non-tendered vets.

It's sad in a way that our long overdue 'rebuilding' isn't likely to ever occur.  In the last few years it was 'win now' because of Bags/Biggio (and a weak Central Division).  Now they are both gone, but the Central is probably even weaker now.  This is a team that (on paper) could win the Central or get a Wild Card, but lose horribly in the first round against much better pitching.

/not sure why WadeSmith didn't grab a few players from the minor league portion of the Rule 5
//even a few 'non-prospect' AAA players that could fill in now in an emergency would improve our short term situation
///long term = rebuild the pathetic farm system
////8-10 losses = just like watching the Cubs at Wrigley with the wind blowing out
/////mmmm... slashies

• Brady Anderson - All-Star in 1992, 96-97 (The most unlikely 50 HR hitter in Baseball history)
• Harold Baines - All-Star in 1985-87, 89, 91, 99 (Baines has driven in more runs as a designated hitter than anyone in American League history but drug problems)
• Dave Concepcion - All-Star in 1973, 75-82; Gold Glove in 1974-77, 79, MVP 1982
• Andre Dawson - All-Star in 1981-83, 87-91; Most Valuable Player Award in 1987;

• Tim Raines –  4 SB titles; All-Star in 1981-87 (Quality leadoff man with 800 stolen bases, 1,500 runs, and a .294 lifetime average)
• Jim Rice - Led League in HR 77, 78, 83; Led League in RBI 78, 83; All-Star in 1977-80, 83-86; Most Valuable Player Award in 1978
