Taking The Shot

Editor’s note – This article originally appeared on AstrosConnection.com.

In a single afternoon of telemarketing, Gerry Hunsicker went from none to Hun, acquiring Pedro Astacio and Mike Williams for Scott Elarton (and a PTBNL) and Tony “McKnight train to New Orleans” in separate deals.Read More

Obligaroty Midterms

Posted on July 10, 2001 by Andyzipp in Zipper Flap

Editor’s note – This article originally appeared on AstrosConnection.com.

There’s nothing more important or popular than arbitrary grades picked by ill-informed yokels such as myself at the mid-point of a season. Especially when that midpoint happened 5 games ago. The Stros are 10 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 1999 season, and playing well enough to win games. I’ll be the first to admit that they are also playing about 10 games over my expectation level of this team, so as an Astros fan, I’m pleased. Here’s what I think about everyone in an Astros uniform this season:Read More

Lone Star Sham

Editor’s note – This article originally appeared on AstrosConnection.com.

So the Lone Star/Dr. Pepper/Enron/Compaq series got underway this weekend as Major League Baseball kicked off the annual Inter-league Farce (because it’s good for you stupid fans. Eat it.) Color me totally uninspired.

The only good thing about putting the Texas Rangers on the Astros schedule for 6 games is that the Stros should win 4-5 of those. A second good thing might be if Saturday’s game sent Kent Bottenfield packing.Read More

Lima Time Ticking Away

Posted on May 2, 2001 by Andyzipp in Zipper Flap

Editor’s note – This article originally appeared on AstrosConnection.com.

Depending on when this gets posted, Jose Lima’s 2nd “last chance” of the year happens tonight or happened yesterday. Watching the Astros so far this season, I get the feeling that El Burro’s “last chances” are going to resemble KISS farewell concerts.  Like KISS, he’s flamboyant, he had limited success over an even more limited period of time, and none of them can sing.Read More

The Weakest Link

Editor’s note – This article originally appeared on AstrosConnection.com.

One of baseball’s classic sayings is “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain.”  For those of you too lazy to look it up, it refers to the 1947 Boston Braves and the deficit they had in starting pitching. I’ve been wracking my brain trying to come up with some catchy saying to include Wade Miller and Scott Elarton, but they all pretty much sucked.  But with Shane Reynolds being about as effective in his two starts as the XFL was in getting anyone with 22 chromosome pairs to watch, Octavio Dotel being a base on balls machine (in the bad way) and El Burro Lima being… well a steaming pile of feces, something needs to be done.Read More

For The Road Warriors

Posted on April 16, 2001 by Andyzipp in Zipper Flap

Editor’s note – This article originally appeared on AstrosConnection.com.

So far the road is a good place to be… well at least 66.7% of the time… for the Stagnant Stars. Going 4 of 6 on the road is an important piece of most road trips. Never mind that half those wins were against the Brewers, still the Talking Heads favorite baseball team (please choose between “Same as they ever were,” or “This is not our beautiful house”.)Read More
