Say what you will…

Reds 3
Astros 4

W: Melancon | L: Thief

HR: 2 Dickities, no Astros.

“Say what you will about Hunter Pence but he always goes hard.”

OK. He catches balls off of his face (NTTAWWT). He hits the cutoff man. He breaks up double plays. He hustles to take an extra base from a lazy OF. He shows patience at the plate. He hits walk-off doubles to win games.

Well, at least he did all of those things today as Hunter put on a show that was every bit as impressive as some of his recent exploits have been embarrassing. As polarizing as he can be, at least among those here, say what you will…he gets the job done. Sometimes.

The boys jumped out to a quick lead on some really bad pitching in the 2nd. With 1 out, Volquez walked 6-7-8 on 13 pitches to load ’em. Wandy popped out on the infield for 2 out but Bourn came through with a 2-run single and the lead. They tacked on another in the 3rd on a Downs sac fly following a Pence walk, Wallace FC and a double to left by Big-Fucking-Johnson.

Wandy looked home-a-licious for most of his start. Despite a triple and an RBI ground out for a run in the 4th, he held the Dickities down until the 7th. A lead-off flare to shallow RF looked to be a hit until FotF launched himself and loosely gloved the ball. As Hunter bounced around on the grass, his face was pressed into service, softly providing a gauntlet – if you will – against the ball’s eager desire to escape it’s confines. When the mass came to a halt, mission accomplished.

Of course, Wandy served up a sweet tater to the next batter so Hunter looked even more epic having saved the lead.

Of course, Wandy served up a sweet tater to the next batter so Hunter had to stuff the heroics in his back pocket for a while.

He almost whupped ’em out in the bottom of the 7th when a stupid/heads-up decision to take 2nd on a single to nonchalant CF Stubbs was successful and ignited a 2-out rally that looked promising but fizzled with the bases loaded when Downs flied out to CF.

Still tied in the 9th after Lopez and Melancon kept the Reds at bay, the Thief took the mound to try and do the same to the Astros. Bourn grounded out to lead off but then the Leake started with a walk to the rodeo clown. Up strolls Gunther to the plate with a look of confidence and determination on his ball-bruised face. He swung mightily at the first pitch without contact but waited and waited for the one he knew would get the job done. He wasn’t going to swing at those balls off the plate. On a 3-1 count, he swung again, just missing contact on a low slider. Now at 3-2 he thought, “what the hell” and reached out for a slider off the plate and slapped the ball down the RF line. Towles crossed the plate to give the Astros the win and Hunter’s 6th walk-off hit of his career.

Say what you will.

Bullpen Beatdowns End with a Mighty Whiff

Turdinals 6
Astros 5

W: Lohse | L: Happ | S: Sanchez

HR: Holliday, Greene

They dropped the puck in Pittsburgh just as JA Happ toed the MMPUS rubber. It was inevitable that I would not be able to dissect any of the intricacies of tonight’s Game 2 between the Jakes and Astros – not that I do that anyway. There was a Game 7 tonight and that was my primary focus, although the Astros flickered on my laptop screen just below my line-of-sight with the 42″ HD.

I could tell Happ was pitching well. I think I saw every K and despite 2 solo dingers, kept the Turds in check for 5. But Lohse was better. A lot better. Only 4 hits through his 7 innings and none for extra bases. He seemed to get better as the game went on but LaGenius thought 97 too much for the man.

The Bullpen Beatdowns began in the Turds’ 7th. Del Rosario swept up the 6th and looked like he would do the same the next frame but collapsed with a 2-out RBI single and a HBP to leave 2 on for Valdez and the heart of the Jakes order. Pooholes, Holliday and Twinkie each had RBI singles before Molina grounded out to end it. 6-0 Turds.

Unfortunately, I saw none of the 3 runs the Astros produced in the bottom of the 8th inning as the last 5 minutes of the Lightning’s precarious 1-0 lead had me pacing and cursing at high dBs. But what I do know without having seen it is the Jakes’ bullpen sucks. Bad. I also know that Brett Wallace is a badass. Still 6-3 Jakes headed into the 9th.

Both my laptop and my HD TV survived the 1:36 6-on-4 the Lightning also endured to take their series and my focus was back on the Astros. Melancon made quick work of the Jakes 9th and Eduardo Sanchez struck out Towles to start the bottom of the inning. Then Inglett singled and Boojwah, craftily placed in the 9th spot in the 8th, tripled to the gap in left center to plate one. Bourn sacrificed Booj home to make it 6-5 and the sparse MMPUS crowd was making noise. The man that is Angel Sanchez kept scant hopes alive and fucked with Lance Berkman all in the same at-bat. His sharp fly ball to right sailed beautifully over Twinkie’s head to the wall for an easy double and a chance for Beaker to be a hero. Ummm…the book on Pence is an all-time best seller and even though he gave it a good effort, the low and way away slider slipped scant inches past the tip of his bat and the comeback was not to be.

One more chance to take this series tomorrow night at MMPUS. McClellan at Figgy. Fuck the Jakes in the eye!

Don’t call it a comeback!

FTC 5
Astros 4

W: Dumpster | L: Figueroa | S: Marmol

HR – Hall (1), Sanchez (1)

Gamezone (Much better than this recap)

Nelson Figueroa made his second start of the season tonight. His first didn’t go so well. I know, I recapped it. This one was a leeeeeetle better, but not much worse. Bursts of runs flew out of his mighty palms in each of the first 2 innings, digging the Boys a hole deep enough that their attempts at heroics fell achingly short.

Frustrating, to me anyway, was how good Nelson looked at times. He was able to stop the bleeding in both of his crooked innings but when you’ve opened the wound, applying the tourniquet is of little solace. He went four giving up 5.

The lineup was not to go lightly, despite Dumpster making them look pretty bad early on. The “chipping away” began in the 5th with a Downs RBI single. The real hope came with 1 out in the 7th when a pinch-hit HR by Hall, followed by another dinger a screaming double by Bourn, THEN another dinger by Sanchez chased Mr. Flippyglove from the game. A Pence walk and a Lee single kept the hope alive but the effort fell short with a Wallace F7 and a Johnson 4UFO.

Both bullpens performed very well but of course, being down by 1, the Astros lost. Fuck the Cubs!!!

Well, that’s going to do it for tonight’s recap so for now, I’d like to leave you with this Moment of Zen:

Settle in, friends. They’re just gettin’ started.

Astros 4
Dickities 12

W: Volquez | L: Figueroa

HR: None

I saw the Opening Day matchup at the Phillies. A solid effort against a good team. A lead carried until the last possible chance was blown. I felt pretty good despite the loss. I haven’t seen a game since. Until tonight.

Sure, I’ve seen the scores, read the boxes, scanned the GZ. I even saw a few spring games. I know this team is not good. But I saw game one. They showed they can put it together; that the hitting can be timely and they can make the play when it’s needed. Hell, I saw the 1st inning tonight!

I watched the Good Guys take advantage of a shaky Volquez and turn patience and timely hitting into 4 runs with 10 batters to the plate in the top of the 1st. And I saw a spastic yet great catch in RF to rob the Reds’ lead-off hitter of an extra-base hit, which lead to a scoreless end to the 1st. I kept watching.

By the end of 2, the Reds had added a run on 3 straight hits and they probably would’ve had more but the inning was mercifully gifted to an end with 1st and 2nd and 1 out by a dead quail Volquez bunt that was turned into a DP.

By the end of 3, the Dickities had a 2-run lead and never looked back. The collapse was punctuated by some of the ugliest Astros at-bats I’ve seen in some time and some truly comedic improvisation in the field. The highlight, and there were many, was Towles’ attempt to gun down a runner at 3rd on a double steal. His throw somehow hit batter Hernandez’ bat and sailed into the 3rd base dugout.

I could go on. Over the course of the evening the Astros logged 5 errors and that’s being generous. They had only 2 RISP past the 1st inning and struck out 12 times. 6 more Reds runs would score as this game went on waaay longer than it should have. JD warned early that 4 runs would not be enough. HA!

I’m a patient fan. I try not to get too high or too low and it’s still only just 5 games in. On the other hand, it’s only 5 games in…

Myers knackered, comes up short in final start

Astros 1
Dicketies 9

W: Arroyo | L: Myers

First things first, I apologize for completely blowing off last week’s Thursday recap. It’s the first one I’ve missed without notice and I feel bad about it.

Brett Myers has accomplished more this season than he has at any time in his career, besides winning a ring with the Phillies a few years back. He’s compiled career bests in innings and ERA and matched his win total on a pretty mediocre offensive team. But the coolest thing, from the perspective of amazing feats, was his chance to go at least 6 innings in every one of his starts this season. That, unfortunately, came up one out short.

An admittedly pooped Myers gave up 2 runs early but was pitching just 1-run down entering the 5th inning when things rapidly declined. 2 walks and 3 singles plated 3 Dicketies in that frame, then returning for the 6th it all went to hell with a lead-off walk to Arroyo followed by a couple of moonshots that sealed Myers’ fate.

Myers has obviously been one of the unexpected bright spots on this team that dipped to the dregs, yet rose again to somewhat respectable. Signing Myers for the next few seasons can only help anchor this young group through the growing pains. I’ve enjoyed watching these post-trade deadline Astros and I’m looking forward to what this team becomes in 2011 and beyond.

Go Astros!! Pound the living shit out of those fucking Cubs!! Send their lame asses back to their frozen dump with a huge shit sandwich!!!

That’s going to do it for my recaps this season. It’s been fun and I want to thank everyone for reading, and especially thank Budgirl for working diligently to make sure you have these to read on a daily basis. Onward through the void!!!

CJ blasts boys to win

Dojers 2
Astros 3

W: Norris | L: Lilly | S: Lyon

HR: Johnson (8 – they’re still looking for it)

The youth movement chugs right along and continues to excite the shit out of those who care to pay attention. I admit, I care but my attention has been spread thin over the past month with many other things that have usurped my Astros viewing. I did happen to see most of last night’s contest and stared intently at the 6th inning at-bat of Chris Johnson.

CJ’s throwing error in the 1st preceded the bomb that Bud Norris gave up to Ethier. Down 2 and with Pence and Lee on, CJ battled the extremely hateable Lilly for 8 pitches until he connected with a wheelhouse fastball that sailed way over the tracks in left. CJ put his head down, tossed the bat aside and briskly trotted around the freshly cleared bases.

Those 3 runs held up, past some sketchy work by the bullpen and a nifty running grab by Boojwah in left (would Lee have even tried?) for the last out. Norris’ 6 innings yielded just 3 hits and 1 ER, plus 7 Ks to best Lilly and the Dojers in game 1 of 4 with these pukes. JA “Don’t call me Jay-Ay” Happ leads the youngsters and Lee in game 2 tonight at 7:05 CDT. Go kick the shit out of ’em, boys!
