Well, That’s Just Great

Posted on August 1, 2009 by GreatBagwellsBeard in Game Recaps, News
Another fine performance

Another fine performance

So let’s get this straight.  In the last month, the ‘stros have lost Berkman, Oswalt, Erstad, and now Wandy to injury, Ortiz and Hampton to a black hole of suck so inescapable and so powerful it was probably created by Michael Bay, and the reinforcements are a cadre of rookie pitchers, a guy with a bum heart, and The World’s Angriest 42-Year Old Setup Man, despite the fact that the entire Pirates roster could’ve been had for Eli Iorg’s corpse and a jumbo pack of Fruit By The Foot? Fan-tastic.

At Busch last night, Mr. Cooper’s Little Leaguers managed to injure themselves (Wandy), get ejected (Bourn), and generally screw things up (Michaels) just like a bunch of little kids.  When your ray of sunshine is Q getting three hits off of Chris Carpenter, you’re really stretching.  Matt Holliday and Julio Lugo delivered clutch hits for the C0-Ards like it was 2004, since you can have great production if you’re a midseason acquisition by the Redbirds even if you’re a hack like Preston Wilson.  Holliday in particular was temple-pounding frustration incarnate last night; after spending all season looking like Billy Beane’s worst idea since the whole movie thing, he’s turned into Roy Hobbs.  Just grand.

Now firmly under. 500 again, the Good Guys’ annual late season heroics seem especially unlikely now.  No word yet on Wandy’s status for his next start, but if he’s out any extended period of time, we’re really going to wish that new homes could’ve been found for Valverde and/or Tejada at the trade deadline.

Well, let’s all drink until the inevitable Cubs collapse in the NLCS.  Then we’ll really start drinking.

astros force win on cardinals

Posted on August 1, 2009 by BatGirl in Game Recaps

final: houston 3  st. louis 4

espn recap

that was an extremely tough game to watch the astros lose.  i’m definitely one of those fans that feels sick to their stomach after one of these, and with the division, wildcard and .500 seeming to slowly slip away, it is all the more painful to see the astros free-fall from contention in front of the BFiB.

ivana hitter

rodriguez and his double sevens have been hitting a horrid .091 over the last seven days, and they finally managed to break out of his 0-18 slump.  unfortunately, it was one or two at-bats too late.  when pudge struck out with the bases juiced to end the 5th inning, it brought the total number of men he had personally left in scoring position to 5.  total astros lob this game = 11

no, really, you take the W

alberto arias made sure to help the cardinals steal seal the victory by giving houston’s lead away in the 8th.  with one out, he hit pujols with a pitch, which set up holliday (who went 4-4 on the day) to line a double to right, scoring pujols and putting him in position to be the go ahead run…which holliday eventually was, when rick ankiel got it done with a single to make it (what would end up being a final) 4-3.  a most undeserved win for st. louis.

a solid 4

moehler looked good, though.  everyone thought so.  i guess everyone thought so.  i really didn’t hear what cooper had to say about his starter, but i did read this:

“Sometimes you get a little aggressive on him, and he just keeps moving it out a little further.  He just throws a lot of quality pitches.  Big League pitcher.  I drink take my hat off to him,”  LaRussa said after the game.

moehler has been to the astros what hampton should have been for the team this season.  hopefully he continues to stay solid as houston tries to piece it’s rotation back together.  if norris pitches well sunday, if oswalt comes back strong, and if wandy continues to look like an ace, mike hampton should consider asking his girlfriend about possible substitute teaching gigs for the fall.

its a lot of “if’s”, sure.  but it’s much better than too many “butt’s”.

best (partial) post-game quote

“…I got right up to my release point and it squirted out of my hand.  When I let go of it, I thought i was going to throw it halfway up the backstop.”

— Brian Moehler

if you have free time this weekend

and you need a little distraction, here’s some stuff you can try to pass the time:

— read random barzilla threads/books

— count the infinite number of places one can acquire steel tubs in the houston area/start numerous threads about something…ANYTHING….other than baseball and the astros

— take a case of left hand imperial stout (and video recording device) to coach’s house

series preview

Astros @ Cardinals–Looking for a Busch to Hide in

Posted on July 31, 2009 by JaneDoe in Series Previews

The Astros fly into Birdland with their tails between their legs and whimpering like a sick puppy.  Coming off a series where they were outscored by 20 runs in 4 games, the outlook doesn’t get much better.  The Redbirds have stocked their arsenal with the likes of Matt Halliday, Mark DeRosa and Julio Lugo, hoping to put the rest of the NL Central firmly in their rear view mirror.  Well, those fuckers better watch out because we put Ortiz to rest and called up Bud Norris.  That’ll teach’em.

 Friday, July 31   7:15 p.m.

Moehler vs Boggs

Moehler’s last start was probably his crappiest of the year.  You would expect him to bounce back.  He does, after all, fare not so bad against the Cardinals.  However, it is the luck of the draw that he faces an unknown.  Yeah, that pimple faced shithead that the Astros can’t hit the broad side of the barn against.  This time that newbie’s name is Mitchell Boggs.  But wait, he is not entirely unknown.  Five, count them FIVE current Astros have faced him in 6 total ABs with a combined batting average of .500.  Woohoo!!! We may just win this game.  Not.

Saturday, August 1st   6:15 p.m.

Rodriguez vs Carpenter

This game features a matchup of two pitchers that could both be considered for NL pitcher of the month for July.  Wandy was 4-0 with a 0.75 ERA in five July starts  while Carpenter countered with a he went 4-0 record and  a 1.62 ERA in his five starts.  Wandy has been especially stellar against the Hole of Poo, who is 3 for 23  and slugs only .130 when facing the lefty.   Plan on seeing some unlikely heroes for the Astros in this game.  Bourn, Coste, Pudge and Matsui all bat above .500 against the Woodworker.  Great pitching matchup be damned.  Expect a  18-17 slugfest outta this one folks.

Sunday August 2   1:15 p.m.

Norris vs Wainwright

Norris is expected to make his first major league start in the place of the Wizard who has a lower back strain, but has not yet been placed on the DL.  Time for voodoo dolls of red feathered friends and all the fried chicken you can shove dow n your pie-hole.  We need to reverse the trend that we see with the hometown nine and hope that the Cardinals shit in their pants when they see our rookie.  Why should it always work against us?  Time for that trend to end.  It is also time for Hunter to get his shit together, and Wainwright is one of his favorite prey.  Pence leads all Astros who have faced Wainwright more than 2 times with a .350 batting average.  Count on him to flail wildly, shoot and miss, and bring down the team’s combined .237 BA against Adam.

Who needs a band aid?

The Astros DL list sure has expanded lately.  Berkman, Erstad, Hawkins,  and Boone are definitely out for the series, and Oswalt is a most likely no- show, too.

The Cardinals will probably sit Brendan Ryan out with a bad ankle for this series.  Greene, Garcia and Glaus are all rehabbing and will not be seen this go-round.

Want stuff?

Get your Whitey Herzog autograph Friday. Former Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog will be signing from 5:30 to 6:30 in Ford Plaza. First 150 people in line will be guaranteed one autograph. No bats allowed. Good.  The Cardinals need to play Friday’s game without bats.  Maybe we can win one.

Saturday you can get your set of 2009 Upper Deck Cardinals cards.  You don’t get the entire team, though.  Only 5 cards per kid. Great for starting forest fires.

Ever wonder what would happen if a Cub mated with a Cardinal?  Just show up early to Sunday’s game to find out.

GROSS. I'm gonna go puke now.

GROSS. I'm gonna go puke now.

Yeah, been a bad week.  So I’m a little pessimistic about this series.  Fuck the Cards.

Get your Cardinals hatred out in the GameZone.

Brutal. Not much more to say than that. Ortiz sealed his fate with just over 2 innings of 9 hits and 9 runs tossed. The best thing about this game was that CB Bucknor got hit. Twice. I can’t even go over what happened except to say that I had to look away numerous times for fear of acting out in ways that would frighten my co-workers. At times, it was much like staring at a picture of Shane MacGowan.

Astros Win, Yet Lose

Astros Recap
Yahoo Recap

Well, this game started out great Michael Bourn leads off with a first pitch single, Jeff Keppinger follows with a single. Then Miguel Tejada hits into what could have been a 3 run homerun but Fukedome snags his hit at the wall only scoring Bourn.

Onto the bottom of the second the Astros go. Roy Oswalt seemed to be doing good, then Ivan Rodriguez goes to the mound and that’s when the “oh shits” and other kind of comments from Astros fans start. Roy leaves the game with a lower back strain. Great news.

So, Wesley Wright comes in to finish off Milton Bradley and the second inning. Wesley continues to pitch 2 other innings giving up 3 runs, which I’m going to cut him some slack since right after or right before the end of the game he goes to the hospital with possible appendicitis. (ETA: Ends up being dehydration.)

So, in comes Jeff Fulchino to save the day. He pitches 3 innings, but also gives up 3 runs. Good news is he did not turn over the lead.

Tim Byrdak came into pitch a scoreless 8th frame and Jose Valverde closed it out.

Astros Highlights:

Jeff Keppinger is hot, hot, hot. He went 4 for 5, 3 runs, 3 RBIs, and no injuries. Awesome day at the “friendly confines.”

Miguel Tejada wasn’t shabby either, he went 2 for 4 with 5 RBIs. One of those hits landed in the fencing so the fans couldn’t throw the ball back. Sometimes I am so proud of the Astros.

Michael Bourn went 3 for 5 and a walk on the night scoring 3 runs. He had a pretty good catch out there in centerfield also. Seriously, who doesn’t like watching this kid play?

Astros Lowlights:

10 walks given up by the Astros. The Cubs had more walks than hits.

All the injuries.

Game Analysis:

I am very proud of the way the Astros played on this night. The Astros used 5 men on the night while the Cubs used 6 to lose. Hopefully a game like this can help a team keep chugging along, but I have to wonder if Music Man is still willing to wait until Thursday to decide if the Astros should be buyers or sellers.

I also think the ending to Monday night’s game didn’t sit well with the Astros and they came to take names last night, and they did. Hopefully they continue to take names since they have 2 more in Chicago and then go to St. Louis for the weekend.

Bench Tidbits:

The GameZone had something happening in there.
