Going for #13...
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Instead of Marwin having his third at bat against Snell in a crucial spot—or Gattis getting a chance to swing—it’s Kemp’s first and maybe only at bat because dude threw a tizzy over a clear strike.

Who could blame him? Bregman almost surely makes that play, but Hinch inexplicably gets cute with the defense while sitting his best hitter (with the best numbers against Snell) while chasing record  win # 13 of a streak even though you have an off day Thursday.

T7:

Smith flies out F7
Gomez...3-2...pops out F3
Hechavarria grounds to 3B, Yuli whiffs at it...E5 as Hechavarria ends up at 2B...scored a double, I guess

And that's all for Verlander, Rondon in

Kiermaier...0-2...1-2...2-2...grounds out 1U

Still tied 1-1 at the stretch

Altuve has played (3DH) every game this year until today.

And he wanted all the RHB in the lineup against Snell, who is murderous on LHB.

If you're gonna start White in place of Altuve, it throws off everything.  But it is what it is.  He's not managing a streak.

That was tense. It was starting to get the flavor of one of those godawful unending abortions of an inning. For a different Astros team it wouldve been. Let’s hope the bats make something of it.

Verlander is so damn good. You don’t see many starters these days pound that many fastballs in the zone, especially in tight situations.

It's pretty common for Marisnick to get a start against a lefty instead of Kemp.  Altuve is an everyday starter.

Hinch announced this afternoon that Altuve was getting his first off day of the year.

And yet again, why couldn't Kiermaier stay on the DL just a little bit longer.

IIRC after we blew the streak in KC last June we went into a little downward spiral. I’d bet, even if we don’t pull this out, this team doesn’t nose dive.

That said, it’d be nice if the bats could wake up in Houston.

Snell was tough, no doubt.  But I can’t help but feel Astros have more than one run if Altuve is in the lineup. Could have been a difference maker, especially in the 1st. Just frustrating to see the few opportunities they did have tonight get squashed.

T8:

Duffy doubles down the RF line on the first pitch
Bauers grounds out 4-3, Duffy to 3B
Ramos...infield in...bounce to 3B...Yuli leaps and off his glove into LF...Duffy scores, Ramos reaches
Field in to pinch run for Ramos
Field steals 2B...not sure what Correa was doing, he was halfway to the mound to field the throw
Wendle strikes out swinging

That's all for Rondon, Peacock in

Wild pitch, Field to 3B
Cron strikes out swinging

2-1 Rays

Stanek, last night's starter, in for the Rays

Bregman...3-0...3-1...flies out F8
Correa...full count...whiffs at a slider in the dirt
Gurriel flies out F9 at the track

2-1 Rays

My best guess is that they’re putting everyone in every role and trying to see exactly how aggressive to be at the deadline for bullpen arms. They brought Rondon on as closer insurance. Might as well test him out before trading for one....?

I missed the name of the Rays reliever that inning but he looks straight out of Boogie Nights.

Alvarado was throwing 97mph whiffle balls. Caveman doesn’t care.

I’d let Stassi hit but luckily for all of you I don’t manage the Astros.

B9:

Alvarado in for the Rays

Gattis singles to LF
Reddick pinch runs for Gattis...
Altuve, pinch hitting for Kemp, flies out F8

Alvarado out, Romo in

Stassi...full count...strikes out looking...never took the bat off his shoulder
White...takes two right down the center to go in an 0-2 hole...1-2...squibs one just past the pitcher, and legs out an infield hit, Reddick to 2B
Marisnick pops out F4

And the Astros take it in the shorts...2-1

Stassi not even swinging the bat was disappointing.  Even Timmy Lupus would have taken a hack or two.

First inning,  bases loaded with 1 out,  aggressive send on a short flyball . . .

And the opportunities continued to be missed from there.

Oh well.

Let's win the series tmw.

And then cried to the ump for calling the low strike. And yes, it was a strike, Stassi.

I was expecting a better ab from Stassi. Bummer.

B1:

Springer with an infield single to SS...diving stop, throw from the knees, but no chance
Bregman...3-0...walks, Springer to 2B
Correa chops into FC on the first pitch, Bregman out 5-4 at 2B, Springer to 3B
Gurriel walks, Correa to 2B
Gattis flies out F9 and Springer thrown out 9-2 trying to score to complete the double play

No score

Would have been safe if he had not been forced to slide wide to avoid Ramos.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I thought he had a shot to stick his hand out and swipe the plate...maybe not.

He tried but just missed the back tip. He was forced too wide.

Not to open a can o' worms or anything, because it looked like a solid play by the catcher, but did he block the plate?

I do not really yet understand that rule.

The throw beat Springer and took Ramos towards 3B. He had to move up the line to catch it. Springer slid wide to avoid the tag, but was forced too wide to touch the plate. It was an aggressive send on a relatively shallow ball and a good enough throw by Gomez.

Didn't he stick his left knee/leg in the middle of the baseline?  I'm assuming that's allowed as he was moving up the line to catch the ball.  But if the ball was on target and he did the same sort of thing, Springer shouldn't have to slide around him, right?

The catcher is allowed to move to field the throw. He just cannot block the plate without possession of the ball or not in the act of fielding it.  The runner cannot deviate from his path to initiate contact or otherwise initiate a collision he could have avoided had he slid. The throw was up the line and Ramos moved to field it.  If the throw is on target and Ramos has the ball, he can block the plate and Springer cannot initiate a collision. It was not a great throw, but it didn’t have to be.
