Aches and Pains 2018

Yuli sent back to Houston to get his hand checked out.  Turns out it was worse than originally reported.  Hinch does not know the cause of the injury.

Well, better to have this happen now versus late March.

my guess is "yes" but I can't imagine why.  I think this board often thanked him for his significant contributions. I hope that he is ok and comes back.

Unless Reed steps up and earns the first base job, I’m thinking Marwin gets most of the reps at first.

I think Marwin takes over and White gets the odd start (I'd bet on him over Reed).

With Marwin needed at 1B, Fisher would really have to suck to lose the LF gig. I guess there's some chance this opens the door to signing Carlos Gonzalez, too.

Marwin need to stay in the utility role. Too bad Logan Morrison signed last week.

Losing Yuli for two months hurts. I hope they operate today.

Surgery's done and went well, says Luhnow. 6 week expected recovery, so Yuli probably misses the first ~2 weeks of the season.

I agree whole heartedly. I think it was Jim that has been saying all winter that he would like to see Davis get more regular at bats. Well, if he continues to hit like he has the first few games of spring he’s getting the spot.

I am too lazy to look this up so if there is a doctor in the house please answer this question. What causes this type of injury? Is this just like a growth that just now started to bother him or was this the result of something Yuli did to cause the injury?

Nate, hope at is well, or will be soon.

It seems like a lot of players have this type of injury.  That slugger/strikeout guy that made AA we had years back (obviously forgot his name) had it, IIRC.  I assume the injury is more probable to befall people who swing bats or disrespect Japanese hurlers, but I obviously don't know.

Here's a HOT TAKEFACT: The bat knob on conventional baseball bats is the root cause of every broken hamate injury and thrown bat in the game of baseball. It’s a design flaw that threatens players and fans alike.

This brings up an interesting question.  Can the Astros rationalize that "Yuli was going to miss the first week, anyway", or will MLB attempt to make sure he misses five games after he's cleared to play?

Small sample size, but Davis has been tearing it up so far this spring.  He's played a tiny bit in the OF in Corpus, so he could be part of a Marwin/Fisher platoon to cover LF and 1B.

I think Davis can hit at this level, and can handle 1B with no problems.  He's the guy that's gonna step up and surprise people, IMO.  I am not optimistic about Reed.  But I sure wish he'd prove me wrong.

Ugh.  One of those odd things you have to balance with a two-way star.  In other words, if they didn't throw him, they'd still have his bat.

this is why I never considered the Angels to be a threat to win the division. Not specifically Ohtani, but I expected their pitching staff to break down over the season. Because they always do.

Sad to hear the Ohtani news.  Rival team or not, I was interestedin seeing how it played out over the course of a season.

Having never had elbow troubles before, I wonder how feasible it would be to just have him DH for the rest of the season.

Sad to hear about Ohtani, but when was the last big money Japanese pitcher that didn't need arm surgery soon after coming to MLB?

There are only 5 pitchers from Japan currently on MLB rosters. Darvish, Tanaka, Maeda, Ohtani, and Hirano. All but Hirano are also serving time on the DL at the moment.

Makes sense.  Marwin plays short and Tucker plays left.  So, of course, they're going to call up Fisher.

Perez was only on the 40-man because the Astros voided his original contract due to a medical issue, correct?

I doubt many people thought he would get the call this year. So his MLB career starting much earlier than expected is directly attributable to failing his physical (and also kicking ass at Corpus).

I like this a lot! He has been very good this year, and he held his own in ST. I read quotes from Luhnow a week or so ago the Brain Trust was still debating whether to consider him an option for the pen or to let him keep developing as a starter.

Really disappointing that he didn’t get to pitch in a game. I could understand if you didn’t want to put him in a really high leverage situation, but they could have squeezed him in somewhere last night.

I am torn about Realmuto. Yes, I would love to have his offensive production in our lineup but I just don’t know that catcher is a big need for us. At least not a big enough need to give up what it will cost us. If we acquire him then in my mind you probably torpedo any chance of acquiring an impact bullpen arm because of the chips you will have to give up. The article about McCann mentions how well Stassi has performed at the plate and the fact that he is ranked as the top pitch framing catcher in the sport. Realmuto is ranked 29th in that category. You would control JT through 2020 though. It is a tough call. I’m comfortable with Stassi as our starter but I am NOT comfortable with Ferderowicz as the backup so hopefully McCann is back soon.

Bummer. That’s a pretty good while to be without him. I am totally fine with Stassi behind the plate. I like giving the young guys a chance though and would like to have seen Stubbs versus Federowicz. Garret is hitting over .300 and has an OPS over .850. The book on him is that he is probably too small to be an everyday catcher right now and needs to bulk up. What I read specifically said he would be great in a backup role. Would like to have seen that but I guess the brass would rather have him down there getting regular AB’s.

If McCann’s surgery and recovery doesn’t look like it will progress the way they want, I wonder if Wilson Ramos would be a possibility?? He’s a rental so he would be much cheaper than Realmuto.

He's obviously a tough SOB to have been catching regularly with a bum knee.  I've never heard any teammate say a bad thing about him.  Barring a rehab setback I'll keep expecting him back for the postseason.

Many of them waxed eloquent about how much he meant to the team. McCullers called him the team’s MVP. For his part, McCann said accepting the trade was the best decision of his life.

Funny how firmly held perceptions can be so wrong.

I’m reminded of the line from the movie Miracle:

“I’m not looking for the best players, I’m looking for the right ones.”

McCann was the right man for the job.

Funny how firmly held perceptions can be so wrong.

Stubbs hasn’t even been removed from Fresno’s lineup as a precaution.

Am I right that if Gattis is DHing that he can't replace Federowicz if he gets injured.  If that is the case, can the Astros go with having Stassi "day to day" or do they need to 10-day DL him and bring up Stubbs?  Because I don't think the Astros want to start Gattis at catcher, but they can't DH him if he is the backup catcher.

Is there anyone else on the active roster right now who can catch?

Gattis can take the field but they then lose the DH. Pitcher would bat in F-wicz spot.

Okay then.
There was a perception that McCann was an uptight, self-righteous prick who flew off the handle at a number of opposing players for showing up his pitcher or whatever. There were a couple notable incidents with then-Brewer Carlos Gomez, and maybe one with Jose Fernandez? Plus he was a Brave and then a Yankee, so totally normal to assume he’s a dickhead.

Anyway, either the perception was wrong, or he mellowed.

I actually still don’t have a real problem with Gomez’ antics and attitude. I think he loves playing baseball and likes to have fun doing it. But I do think he’s an idiot in terms of baseball IQ and approach.

I never liked Gomez before he became an Astro and I liked McCann since that time he got in Gomez's face for dicking it around the bases that one time. I don't like showboating either. However still, when Gomez was an Astro, I guess I got to know him a little better due to the increased exposure and better understood, at least, his perspective on the behavior, Of course I rooted for him to do well while he was here.

So, any news on Correa?  I was anticipating a rehab assignment that would have him ready for tomorrow's game.  Hasn't happened, as far as I know.

Is this something to worry about?

I keep telling myself that if they were really concerned about Correa, they might have gone hard for the Manny Machado rental sweepstakes. Regardless of cost or dealing with O’s.

I don’t think we would have ever given up something similar to what the Dodgers gave up for a rental,  even if that rental was Machado.

Now, if Correa’s injury will be a nagging one it could push the bullpen issue to second on the list. Getting a bat could become top priority. Abreu at first base with Gurriel moving to third and Bregman to short could be a possibility. Or an outfield bat in left if Tucker can produce pop over the next week could be a possibility. Adam Jones or Starling Marte could be targets with Gonzalez then taking most of the load at short while Yuli and Bregman stay put.

It is going to be an interesting week....

I think Adam Jones's best days are far behind him, and I would be disappointed if the Astros gave up anybody of consequence to acquire him. I suppose there's a chance that he would be rejuvenated by going to a contending team, but that seems like a risky bet.

I tend to agree. I fine with Kemp out there but if they want more power from that position they will have to look somewhere. I too believe Jones best days are behind him but you may could get him for very little especially if you are willing to pay the rest of his salary for the season which would be significant. He could come in a package deal with Britton????? The plus with Jones is not only his power potential but they say he is great in the locker room. Not that we are lacking there but still, more veteran leadership can only be a plus.

Nah, not really. Like I said, I think his best days are probably behind him. I just mention him because he’s probably available. If we were to grab an outfielder I’d rather have Marte or Rosario. Not sure either are available though and I’m not sure we need a bat anyway.....unless Correa’s problems look like they will linger.

Just curious because I value your opinion. Do you see a bat as a bigger need now than a backend bullpen arm???

Me too. L4 and L5 for me, but only 1 surgery so far.

Not that we are at that point yet but if his back is as bad as mine,  shortstop won’t be in his long term future.

L5, then L3 and L4.

Need bat first. Correa’s back is no doubt the reason for Abreu. Britton would be nice.

Not that it's any of my business, but what age were you?  Mine was at 32, and I was 100% over it 4 years later, and no problems since.  I am of course not Carlos Correa.

Yes, but didn't they use to call you "Righty"?

Easy rehab, but he’d miss most of the season.

Judge out 3 weeks with broken wrist after hbp.  Checked swing, opened up,  ball came in on his right wrist.

The announced time frame is 3 weeks before game-situation bat swinging. I think that makes it "at least 3 weeks."

This presumably means Springer to DL?  So, it's not just a day to day thing?

Anyway, I'm glad we can call up Jake.  His defense will help and who the fuck knows, he might get a timely hit here or there.

I’d worry about the collar bone.

I’m hopeful that they presumption that they could “treat it” during the game yesterday indicates that it’s not a collar bone fracture, but I’ll continue to prepare for the worst during these injury-plagued times.

The lineup could construction will be interesting today, especially facing a lefty. I would have expected Kemp-Reddick-Bregman against a righty. Jake will likely get a start if travel allows.

AJ Hinch on MLB Sirius Radio Channel saying that when he got back to his office last night, Springer was there, shirtless, doing jumping jacks showing him that he had total range of motion.  Springer wants to play today but Hinch giving him the day off.  It sounded like he isn't going on the DL.

I was listening too when AJ said that. He certainly made it seem like it wasn’t serious and that this is probably just a single day off for George so the Marisnick call up is puzzling. AJ is usually pretty forthcoming on his weekly radio spot. If George was going on the DL for a 10 day respite, I think he probably would have said so, though he certainly doesn’t have too. Reckon someone is being sent down??

I guess anything is possible including George going on the DL. That just isn’t the impression AJ gave when they specifically asked how Springer was doing. I would not send Tucker down but that’s just me. With all of these injuries I’d let the kid play. There is still plenty of time in August to make a waiver trade or call Jake up if Tucker clearly can’t handle it over the next 2-3 weeks.

He [Marisnick] had 50 PA's in his recent July stint and slashed .341/.400/.591 with 1 HR, 4 RBI and 3/4 SB.  He also had 2 HBP , 12 Ks and 11 error-free OF games (5 CF, 6 RF).

This tells me that Springer won't go on the DL. If Springer were going on the DL, why send Tucker down?
Because Marisnick can play CF better?  Plus, they can bring him right back (even without an airplane ticket) if they do put George on the shelf.

Devo to the DL "left hamstring tightness" guess that answers the question of how osuna gets on the roster. Even though this is a couple days early

Apparently so. He would have been my choice but it's not my decision. Maybe in a couple weeks when devo is "ready" Harris will have a mysterious "injury" and they will swap until September when they can both be on the roster

Jose Altuve won’t be activated from the disabled list Sunday, the first day he’s eligible. He has yet to resume baseball activities.

The Athletic reports that Derek Fisher is being called up following Springer's thumb injury:
https://twitter.com/ByRobertMurray/status/1026434243277324288

ETA: Fisher is hitting .259/.384/.477 in about 200 AB at AAA, with 10 doubles, 10 home runs, and 11 steals in 12 tries.

I’m more concerned about his hitting .176/.222/.419 with 2 doubles and 2 steals in the American League.

Kemp to the leadoff spot/Fisher to 8 (9 in AL parks)?

Bregman could leadoff but he's currently needed in the rbi spot.  Maybe if Correa gets back.

And somebody needs to get busy sacrificing a goat.

This would be my thinking in AL parks. For the two games in San Fran I’m also thinking Kemp to lead off.

Here is my shot at tonight’s lineup.

Kemp CF
Reddick RF
Bregman SS
Gurriel 3B
Gonzalez 2B
White 1B
Maldonado C
Fisher LF
Morton P

I guess Tucker's demotion was more about his performance than needing Marisnick up when Springer looked like he'd be out (the first time).

I think Kemp plays every day now regardless of pitching. Do you think Fish and Jake platoon based on righty/lefty?

See, all you Debbie Downers were saying he’s done for the season. Hope is a good thing. Maybe even the best of things. :)

Correa was supposed to miss a couple games as a precaution.  He's been out two months.  I'm not sure what happened to Brian McCann...kidnapped by aliens, I suspect.  I'll be believe Springer will be back in two weeks when he's back in two weeks.

I think McCann took BP with the team in LA. I got the impression from Luhnow that he is “close.”

I'm wondering if lance actually does come back at or near the beginning of September, if he might be moved to the pen for the last of the season.

IF the astros make the postseason I've assumed he would be going to the pen, might make sense to get him there early rather than needing to stretch him back out with only a couple of starts left.

I’ve always been a fast healer.

And it was suggested at the time he’d be back after 10 days which would have been July 12th. Of course the injury was much worse than initially thought. Which is my point

He had surgery

Yes I know. My point is that he was originally out with “knee discomfort” which turned out to require surgery and months of rehab. It was another example of the injury being much worse than they indicated at the time, which contributes to my pessimism that Springer’s injury will be short term.

I sort of agree.  I don't see them keeping three catchers and wouldn't anticipate a Stassi demotion, but I suppose that could happen.

Stassi's out of options.  Kemp, Marisnick, White, and Davis could go down.  That leaves you very thin on either the infield or outfield though.

I think folks around here vastly underrate Fisher's ability to watch completely hittable pitches all the way into the webbing of the catcher's mltt.

Since none of them are great hitters they may plan to PH for them in late situations. And they may want to insert Maldonado into the game late, if he isn't already, for slowing the running game.

Who is going to pinch hit for them, when there's no bench because they have 3 catchers?

I think that McCann is the odd man out.  He's maybe the worst defensively of the three.  And Stassi is the best hitter.

Uh, McCann is the best hitter of the 3. And while he isn't as good technically as a defender, hes a leader and the pitchers trust him which counts for a ton

McCann turned in more than a few high quality at bats last post season. Regardless, the pitching staff consensus was that he was the MVP.

Right, Fisher.  Which still leaves you with just 3 outfielders.  Unless you want White or Gurriel playing 2b and Marwin in the outfield.

On the bright side IF Correa shows no ill effects from playing all nine innings on back to back days in Corpus the next couple of days he should join the Astros on the next homestand.

While Luhnow didn’t clarify, I took it to mean they will carry 3 catchers on the 40 man roster, leaving a proven catcher available if someone gets hurt during a series (IF THEY MAKE IT). Don’t want to anger the BBG’s.

I think they keep 3 catchers on the 40 man roster and decide before each series (IF THEY MAKE IT) which two they want to go with for that series. Having that third catcher to fall back on in case of injury is a real plus, especially given McCann’s age and recent fragility. If I am correct in that assumption, and McCann proves to be healthy, then I think Stassi will be the odd man outside the 25 man roster and will be called upon only if there is an injury. Maldonado’s arm will be a big factor IF THEY MAKE THE PLAYOFFS in my opinion.

They carried 3 catchers last year and IF they make it again, will do the same. If you lose a player in the middle of a series, he cant be replaced. You can use the 3rd catcher spot by having 1 fewer pitcher. It wont really affect the bench.

Actually, I’m pretty sure you can replace a player lost to injury during the playoffs as long as the player you are replacing him with is on the 40-man. Pretty sure this has come into play each of the last two seasons with other teams. I could be wrong....

You might be right. Maybe it's that they miss the next series if replaced. I know there is a big downside to replacing a player mid series to keep teams from taking advantage

Read this again. This is the craziest statement today. You obviously did not watch last year’s postseason or listen to the pitchers talk about him.

McCann is the odd man out? Hahahahahaha!

Read this again. This is the craziest statement today. You obviously did not watch last year’s postseason or listen to the pitchers talk about him.

McCann is the odd man out? Hahahahahaha!
Agree Jim. McCann has an intangible value that is almost impossible to put a value on. If he is healthy, he plays. It will come down to if you want Maldonado’s arm or Stassi’s bat. I will take the arm. Stassi has really cooled off to the point where there isn’t an egregious difference between he and Martin at the plate. I do agree with someone else who said that IF THEY MAKE IT, you could carry 3 active catchers. You won’t need to carry 13 pitchers for the playoffs. Still, I think 2 on the active for a series and the other on the 40 in case of injury is the way to go.

Actually, I’m pretty sure you can replace a player lost to injury during the playoffs as long as the player you are replacing him with is on the 40-man. Pretty sure this has come into play each of the last two seasons with other teams. I could be wrong....

Not only that, you can carry a "26th man" on the postseason roster...a catcher who can substitute for a catcher who suffers a concussion.  Must be catcher for catcher, however.

Comparing last year to this year doesn't make any sense.  First, the Astros went out and literally brought in the 2017 AL gold glove catcher -- a guy who shuts down the opposing team's running game.

Second, McCann is coming off of a serious knee injury that required surgery.  He was already subpar at catching balls in the dirt (which the Astros purposely do all of the time).  Do you think he's going to be better coming off of knee surgery?

Third, you know I watched all of the playoffs last season.  Did you?  McCann was a terrible hitter in the playoffs last season.  He batted .175 and struck out 17 times in 57 ABs.  He had one big hit in the World Series.  At the same time, the Astros had 8 WPs while he was catching in the playoffs last season.

Finally, maybe you should listening to what the Astros pitchers are saying this season about Stassi and more recently about Maldonado.

Finally, maybe you should start reading quotes from this season from the Astros pitchers about Stassi and more recently about Maldonado.

You have been on this get rid of McCann kick for two years now. He had two big hits in the NYY elimination games, which were crucial hits in those games. The one big hit you concede in the WS was in Game Five and was a homer off a lefty which regained a three run lead and prevented a nine inning loss. Bregman gave him credit for the win.

What you totally ignore is what McCann means to the pitchers. McCullers called him the team MVP, and JV was giddy McCann was back to catch his bullpen session. I cannot understand this for you, but there is no way in hell he will be the odd man out.

Wait! A WP proves he is a bad catcher? Stassi and Maldano are good defensive catcher, but they cannot handle the pitchers like McCann. JV can hardly contain his irritation with Stassi and has chewed his ass on the mound more than once. There will be a catcher rotation for sure, but McCann is invaluable to the pitching staff.

I am waiting for HH to weigh in on this.

I am not on a "get rid of McCann" kick.

I am on a "it makes no sense to carry three catchers" kick.

The best defensive catcher the Astros can put out on the field for the remainder of the season and into the playoffs is Maldonado hands down.  In the playoffs I want him starting every game if possible.   Maldonado calls a great game.  If you were watching this week, you would have heard the broadcasters talking about this.

And if you are going to drop one of the Astros three catchers, I'd drop the one coming off of knee surgery (Knees are kind of important for a catcher and play a significant role for hitting as well).

But I'm glad that you admit that Maldonado and Stassi are good defensive catchers.

I think you know where I'll line up on this.  Any argument that contains "a terrible hitter in the playoffs" when discussing catcher cuts no ice with me.  McCann's value last year was beyond self-evident IMO.  He was absolutely the right guy for the job, for a host of reasons that don't include his postseason batting average.  If he's 100% and can play, absolutely he's the number one catcher for the remainder of this season.  I question whether or not he'll be 100%, but that's a different discussion.  Stassi has done an admirable job filling in, and there's a lot to like a Maldonado, who very well may be the answer in the future.  But McCann brings more to this team than his batting average and the number of wild pitches thrown when he's behind the plate.

With catchers, it's not always about whose "best" its, who do the pitchers want/trust. Trust is 90% mental and 10% blocking/catching/throwing out runners. These guys(rotation minus cole) have played with McCann a while now, won a championship throwing to him. That cant be ignored. Are MM and Stassi better defensively? 100%. Are they better offensively? We can debate that but its probably pretty close.

I'll take a healthy McCann and feel pretty good about my choice. If hes not healthy in 6 weeks, IF the astros make the postseason, then we'll talk about MM or stassi as the guy.

Who is going to pinch hit for them, when there's no bench because they have 3 catchers?

I think that McCann is the odd man out.  He's maybe the worst defensively of the three.  And Stassi is the best hitter.

I'm a little late to the catcher discussion here, but if for no other reason, the Verlander/Stassi mound visits alone this season tell me that McCann is absolutely on the playoff roster.

Astros president of baseball ops and GM Jeff Luhnow said he expects C Brian McCann to return to in-game action in 1-2 weeks, either with the Astros or on a Minor League rehab assignment.

A catcher calls more than 100 pitches a game.  His ability to be elite at that aspect of his job and have the respect of the pitching staff is more important than pitch framing or shutting down the running game.  McCann has that in spades over Max Stassi, who has been chewed out by numerous Astros’ pitchers for his game calling this season.

Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.

Just a gut feeling,  that this time up, Tucker is going to get starTED on very solid major league career. But I still love what Kemp is doing.
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

They are now missing 3 core regulars, a starter, a key reliever and a valuable sub. Another core regular is playing his way back after missing 40 games. The last road trip showed a ton of grit and resilience, but it was an anomaly. It is going to continue to be tough sledding for a while.
