Beer and Queso / Re: Infinity War (Spoilers)
« on: May 02, 2019, 01:40:04 am »

At this point, Captain Marvel is completely indestructible and irresistible (i.e. she can just trash entire spaceships by flying through them a la Holdo - must be a Disney thing) so it's hard to see how they can create any suspense.  For example, it was kind of silly and pander-y when they lined up all the women on the battlefield to help Danvers get the glove across some real estate when we'd just seen her go binary through Thanos' spaceship.  That's what they're going to have to deal with going forward.  Maybe they can use the OG Superman and Dark Knight dilemma plot device whereby she can save one but not the other of two interests in peril, but that's only good for one movie.  Oh, and then there's Evil Danvers from another universe, so that's two movies.  I really hope I'm wrong about both of these.

There are people and things in the cosmic side of Marvel that make Thanos look like Stilt Man. That's who Carol is going to fight in the future. Plus we know the Eternals are in the works and we've seen the head of a Celestial. Not to mention Galactus is now in play.

Here in Sumatra, it's playing on 100% of the screens (at least in this city of 1.1 million), and it's sold out for the next week or so.

Even at 84% it was damn near impossible getting good seats at a reasonable hour but the theaters here are open almost 24 hours.

I don't know, Swansea is pretty bad.  It would really be spitting the bit if they can't win that match.  Man U and Everton are both tough, though one of those teams will be more focused on FA cup.  On the other hand, if Everton gets past Man U, Man U will be extra motivated to hang on to the Europa cup spot.  And if Everton doesn't advance to the FA Cup final they won't have much to play for beyond finishing well and being spoilers. Who fucking knows with Chelsea in the final game.  They could show up wanting to play the spoiler in order to accomplish something this season, but they haven't shown that sort of backbone.

I don't really know if Man U would want that Europa League spot. It's kind of the ebola of European tournaments. Especially with English clubs.

Yep the media here is reporting its the Twins which is funny since one of the Seoul teams is actually the LG Twins so that works out for those fans. Sounds like there's another player being posted soon by the KBO though.

I'm expecting it to not be the Astros.  I can't help but think Luhnow is really hoping Reed steps forward and takes the job.  Power hitting 1b who can also hit for average command sizable salaries.  If he continues what he's been doing he is exactly that and extremely cost controlled.

I think I'm just hoping for an increase in Houston Astros coverage here in Korea.

I bet it's the Pirates. They need a better 1B than Alvarez, and they've got Kang and obviously have scouted that team extensively.

It sounds like they'll announce it tomorrow morning Korea time. He hit a lot of home runs here but the stadiums are generally pretty small so I don't know how much of that power will translate.

A Kim and a Kang and now a Yang.

The first two were discussed in the other thread but now there is a report that lefty Hyeon-jong Yang will be posted next week. The same article links the Astros to the pitcher as well as four other clubs (including the FUYankees).

His CV?

  • Turns 27 prior to next season
  • Winner of this year's Dongwon Choi Award (Cy Young equivalent)
  • Per the article, throws 4 pitches and FB sits at 92-95 (though that speed has been questioned)
  • KBO statistics are here (remember, particularly in 2014 it's a hitter's league)
  • A fairly extensive writeup at Amazin Avenue

Is this the start of a Korean wave?

FWIW, Keith Law (via MLBTR) ranks Kang 15th among available free agents. Sez range at SS below average but a 60 arm compensates somewhat. Some of the power will translate but BA will plummet.

Sounds perfect for the Astros

Van Hekken took a perfect game into the 7th as Nexen won the game 9-3 to tie the series 2 games apiece. Don't bother clicking on the link above as the game was not archived. I came into the game late and then fell asleep on it but at least offensively I don't think Kang did anything noteworthy.

Game 5 is on Monday.

Was watching this at a fried chicken and beer place last night. I didn't see all of it but yeah I didn't see him do much. It was all Nexen for most of the game.

Oh I agree completely.  Conger's hit well at every level of the minors, perhaps Luhnow sees a guy they can turn around with a different organizational approach?

On the other hand, maybe this is just a ploy to attract those Korean players Nate's talking about.

I think it'll take more than a gyopo bench player to attract some of the Korean players. You're gonna need kimchi too and lots of it.

His team Nexen Heroes is currently playing powerhouse league champions Samsung Lions in the KBO finals. I caught some of a game the other day but I'm not familiar with who's who in the league. Samsung Lions out of my wife's hometown of Daegu are the most successful team in the KBO so Nexen winning would be an upset.

Saw the highlights, and the defending was downright shocking.  van Gaal is trying out a system of 3 centrebacks, but all of them seemed awol.  Meanwhile, they had only 2 strikes on target, both long after the horse had bolted.  They are a mess.

Hospitalised, they said.

'Arry had to abandon his 3 centerback formation in the Spurs match.

Talk Zone / Korean Baseball
« on: August 19, 2014, 10:03:18 pm »
So this past week I finally had the chance to attend a baseball game here in Korea. Baseball games here have been hyped up by Koreans and expats since I got here so I had high expectations of the experience but not necessarily the quality of play. I arrived at the Jamsil Stadium, which is just across the Han River from my neighborhood on the far eastern edge of Seoul, and I was immediately hit with a festive atmosphere of people cooking food to sell, giant ice tubs full of cheap Korean beer and soju, and carts of typical Korean street foods. The place was a mad house but in a fun way. I was able to get 4 tickets in the outfield bleachers for about $8 each. The stadium holds about 40,000 people I would estimate and the place was definitely sold out.

The outfield seats work like bleachers so you just have to find a spot to sit and stand. Now, the really fun part was being able to purchase all the food and beer we wanted at the outside vendors to bring into the game with us. There was a KFC and Burger King as well as outdoor grill and guys from local fried chicken chains running around trying to sell off picnic box kits of chicken. Korean fried chicken is pretty fantastic and a staple here. The Jamsil Stadium is the home of two teams: the LG Twins and the Doosan Bears, both named after companies of course. That night the Twins were taking on the Hanhwa Eagles from Daejeon City and we ended up sitting among mostly visiting fans. The atmosphere inside the stadium from the start of the game and until well after is nothing short of electric. It was something akin to a European soccer match without any violence.

The home team had half the stadium and the away team had a portion down the left field line with each team using drums and cheerleaders to lead chants and singing. In between innings the cheerleaders would change outfits, perform dance routines, and even do beer chugging contests. It was all very Korean but so much fun. Every player has their own chant the fans will sing for him and at one point each side of the stadium got into a chant battle back and forth growing louder with every chant. The game itself was a pitcher's duel with the underdog Eagles coming out on top 1-0. After the final out is when the party really began for the Hanhwa fans as they cracked fresh beers, sang and danced for another 30 minutes or so. All in all we probably spent $12 - $15 a person with large cans of beer included. Definitely something I'm going to do again as much as possible!

The Little Saigon is Westminster seems to have a couple of places that are region-specific or that specialize in something sort of offbeat but in general, yes, Bellaire Blvd has much, much more. I'm surprised you think that Korean food is better in Houston since LA has, you know, Korea TOWN which is enormous and has countless hundreds of restaurants. It also has one of my favorite bars, a place called Toe Bang. I guess the delicate joys connoted by the name get blurred a bit in translation but I really like that place.

Oh yeah Korea Town's food and entertainment is pretty epic. I have been to Toe Bang and yes I do snicker any time I'm around there. I've been going to Korea Town regularly since I met my wife and there are still places I'm just now discovering or getting around to trying.

Some other stuff too, but plenty of bulgogi.  It seems the food truck scene is embracing korean-fusion street food which is popularizing the taste.  I can think of three trucks off hand that serve Korean flavor influenced tacos and sandwiches.

Its all about the bibimbap or the soondubu tofu soup.  The Kogi truck has been the staple out here and I think they kicked off the "gourmet" food truck craze some 7 or 8 years ago. There's also a Korean sausage fusion place that started from a truck.

I didn't have a chance to watch the match but read about the complaints for a penalty in United's favor towards the end of the match.  Is there merit to the complaints?

It could have gone either way to be honest. Wellbeck and Januzaj had already committed dives with one getting a yellow card. But it makes up for the dive that drew a PK back at White Hart Lane earlier this season.

Best away performance by a visiting team this season at Man City has been by Crystal Palace (only Bayern Munich has done better, but that was in the Champions League).  Official Man of the Match - the City goalkeeper Joe Hart.  Says it all.

No points were won but only giving up one goal at the Etihad is something to build on.

Beer and Queso / Re: EPL on NBC in 2013

Well, Chelsea at home to Liverpool is the 10am game scheduled on NBC Sports on Sunday morning.  That one actually might be worth watching.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace's loss* at Manchester City has been announced as the 9am game on NBC Sports on Saturday.  After the recent run of good form, a few of Palace's games have been slated for TV broadcast, which is nice.  The NBC app is great, when it works, but it's no replacement for High Def glory on the big screen.

* In games at the Etihad this season, Man City have put 6 past Arsenal, 6 past Spurs, 5 past CSKA Moscow, 7 past Norwich and 4 each past Moan Utd and Newcastle.  Avoiding a drubbing is the priority, as our goal difference** (worth half a point in reality) can't survive a big number.

** One of 5 teams in the -15 to -17 range, but a hammering could put us in a world (of hurt) of our own.

The Etihad is a slaughterhouse.

The KBO has been more active in signing non-Koreans this offseason due to a rule change increasing the number of foreign imports. One of their teams today, the SK Wyverns, apparently waved enough money at Luke Scott to entice him away from his guns (South Korea has some of the strictest gun laws in the world, virtually banning private ownership). Money trumps principles.

Never beat anyone in the top 10 this year either.

I'm assuming sarcasm on the Bale sale but, just in case, it was, of course, the Chairman.  Having said that, it was AVB who spent the proceeds on a pile of dreck, so there is that.

The jury is still out on the new signings. Eriksen and Lamela are both still young but there was talk that Baldini bought who he wanted and AVB just had to deal with it. I still like their chances to turn things around and put up a fight for the top 4 and possibly win a cup or two.

Yep.  For the most part, Fields did a good job and I don't see his numbers not improving this season.  Between him and Q and A, that gives us three legitimate late-inning options, before throwing Veras in the picture.  That is much better than we had at any point last season.  There's a large gap between last year and even league-average, but I think there's a good chance we're already there with personnel.  Throw in Veras and we may be a little above.

If Lo can get some confidence and better control he has the stuff to be another force coming in the late innings.

Agreed on all fronts.  This may be the end of Young's ability to cheat his way to penalties (but he's been at the centre of a diving storm before...).  Moyes has better options who aren't sullied with the "diver" stain, and I really hope he benches Young for one of those.  It'll send a message to every player out there who thinks he can profit by it.

I really think that refs have to stop giving these bump fouls as penalties.  Messi is fouled all the time, but he rides through them and keeps going, allowing the referee to let play go but then call it back if the fouling managed to stop Messi's run.  Ironically, Young plays in the position once occupied by George Best - a skinny bloke who prided himself on not getting knocked over by bigger players.  Going to ground once they "feel contact" is a coward's way out.

That's one reason why I respect Messi more than Ronaldo in that great debate. I would love to see Messi in England one day but I don't think that will happen.

Ashley Young's diving bullshit* on Saturday morning has stirred the pot quite significantly.  The current Moan Utd manager - in a position totally contrary to his lauded predecessor - has always appeared genuinely interested in cutting out diving, and has stayed true to form here.  His comments are quite candid and honest.  He has called for retrospective punishment for blatant offenders.

I'm not surprised Ashley Young was involved in that. He's one of a handful of players in the Premier League that constantly try these tactics. Yes Bale was one too and I don't think it was a coincidence that Tottenham was awarded 0 penalties all of last season and have already been awarded 2 this season in the absence of Bale. This could be a good thing, as you said the pot is significantly stirred. Good for Moyes too. We'll see how he treats Young after this.

So NOW Fifa decides to investigate the Besler yellow card

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/09/13/report-fifa-investigating-incident-between-usmnts-matt-besler-and-costa-rica

Pretty convenient that they wait until after we play Mexico to do it, and there is now talk of Costa Rica beeing punished for fans booing the US National Anthem and using laser poitners.  The punishment, not allowing Costa Rica to sell tickets to their game vs Mexico and playing in an empty stadium.  Is FIFA run by Mexicans?  WTF.  Sounds like they are pulling out all stops to try and drag El Tri to Brazil.

Mexico IS a pretty big market for the World Cup.

So 2 more games in WCQ, and then some friendlies leading up to the WC.  How many friendlies from OCT to June can we expect to play, 5-6?

In that time seems like the real positional battles are for the back 4, who all has a shot?  Obviously Gonzalez, seems like a lock but the other 3 spots should be wide open.  Personally I would move Fabian Johnson back there and open up another actacking spot.  Then choose from Beasely, Besler, Cameron,Parkhurst, Chandler, Brooks, Goodson, Cherundolo, Bocanegra, Williams...

I like a backline of:  Fabian Johnson -- Omar Gonzalez -- Not Sure -- Cameron

The closest Cherundolo should get to Brazil is watching the games at home in his underwear.

Never was, never has been against the rules, AFAIK.  You're not allowed to kick the ball out of a goalie's hand(s), nor are you allowed to play the ball when the goalie has two hands on it.  What that guy did violated neither rule.

And then there's the old "Hide Behind the Goalie and Steal the Ball" ploy.

For some reason I thought you weren't allowed to touch a ball in any way that was in the keeper's hands or hand.

And a big role in the team's many losses. If you use last year as a base line, he is trending down in all offensive categories. But if he plays regularly through the end of the year he is going have 30 home runs and 80 rbis - nothing to sneeze at. And he is going to come close to the all time strike out record. He will be 27 next year. The Astros can afford to invest another full season in him to see if he can improve his contact. If he can, he will be a monster.

Exactly. This team has time and ain't going anywhere anytime soon. Let him play. This is the AL after all.

Palace were the only promoted team to open at home.  I think the familiar surroundings would've helped.  They had a fantastic record at home last year - they only lost twice in 23 league games at Selhurst (ironically, one of those being on opening day).  If they can keep that faith in their home form, they've got a puncher's chance.

Ah yes very good point.

Cardiff looked overwhelmed by west ham which frightens me bc they are a mid table team who totally out classed us.  I'm hoping it was more a poor performance due to being ill prepared for the "bright lights" of the EPL and less a testament of the teams quality.  It's going to be a nerve wracking season hoping for enough points to finish 17th.

Palace was the only new kid that looked like they had a chance to hang around. Of course this was only one match into the season so we'll see. Hull looked like deer in headlights.

Thanks.  Wasn't expecting much from that game, but I was impressed with the effort and organisation.  They started with their "Championship XI", minus Zaha (gone) and 30-goal man Murray (injured), which was weird, but looked a lot more threatening when they subbed in Chamack, Phillips and Williams.  I think they can compete with the lower half for sure, and that's all that matters this year.

Thought Holloway was quite a bit over the top going off about the penalty.  That's a 50/50 call in any game, it just came down tails for Palace that day.  Bad things happen to struggling clubs (which I expect us to be), so he needs to get used to it.  And Moxey needs to be told about Dufnering, so he keeps his arms down when he's in the penalty area!

Not to mention Tottenham had zero penalty kicks called for them all of last season. I can definitely see CP staying up though and will check in on them throughout the season. The eagle flying around was cool too.

Back to the topic at hand...

Just got an email from NBC (I signed up for EPL stuff from them).  5 matches live on NBC Sports, one live on NBC and the balance live on their website!  I believe all matches are available on their website for later viewing.

Way more EPL on TV here than in the UK.  I am in heaven!  No way Crystal Palace merits a live game very often on the old Fox Soccer deal.  Now, at worst, I can stream their games live and throw it up on the big screen via Apple TV.

I'm a bit excited too. I even enjoyed their Premier League Guide shows on NBC last week and I typically hate those types of things. If they could only come up with a subscription service for non-cable people...

Some of the strikes umpires call on Altuve are just horrendous. Usually its on balls that are around his eyes, and almost all umps seem to call anything up to his shoulders a strike. But on this 4th-inning AB just now, the 1-0 pitch ran way inside, so far inside that it popped out of the catcher's glove as he reached over to catch it. Strike. Then, a slow curve, outside and picked by the catcher just before it hit the ground. Strike 2. Altuve fouled off another pitch that was a bit low and away, asked the ump if it was a strike, and nodded as though the ump said yes.

He's having a disappointing year, for sure, but I wonder if part of it is pitchers realizing that Altuve's legal strike zone is apparently just as large as a guy who's 6'3".

Yeah I was thinking the other day that he's not as effective this year but then I realized he's still only 23 so maybe its just a sophomore slump.

7:30am on NBC Sports.  As to expectations, me neither.

Palace are like the Astros this year - overmatched against most opponents and using this season as part of a building process.  (Literally, around half the projected additional revenue is earmarked for much-needed stadium renovations.)  Any fun had along the way is a bonus.

Spurs should be driving towards the Champions League, but may end up backsliding if/when Bale goes.  He will leave a big hole in the team.

It'll be interesting to see how the Bale loss is handled. Sigurdsson and Holtby need to step up but they are young and have the ability to. I don't know much about Chadli or Soldado but from what I've read they're good players. I'm confident in the midfield though and think it might be one of the strongest in the EPL. Center Backs are solid but Spurs still suck at set pieces. I don't know much about Crystal Palace other than the drama to get promoted last year. That was a fun story.

Lo is his surname. Is Lo the first Taiwanese born player to make the big leagues?

I doubt they're ready to throw him into the fire, but Lo is at CC and on the 40-man.  If nothing else, he may get a callup in September.  We'll probably see a lot of those lower-level starters in the bullpen over the next couple of years as the top starters start filling the rotation (maybe some of the higher-ceiling guys if they can't develop serviceable third pitches).  I don't have enough knowledge of the lowest levels to start naming future relievers, but Chris Cotton has a good chance (though he has been stretched out as a professional).

Lo seems like he has good swing and miss stuff when he's healthy. But that seems to be a rare occasion.

These announcers need to take a basic trigonometry course: they're claiming that if Martin had gotten to the fence earlier so that he could gather himself, he might have had a chance to catch that ball. That thing landed four feet behind the fence; if Martin could catch that, he would hold the world high jump record at about 10 feet.

Maybe if he got into Nelson Cruz's stash he could pull that off.

Always thought the glove was solid, but I've been bullish on the bat.  I'm beginning to think I was wrong on both... (the glove is STELLAR, and the bat shows a heck of a lot more promise than I thought it might...). Kid has impressed me quite a bit!

I wish his average was higher but it seems like he has had a lot of bad luck lately with balls hit into play.
