Not the Cubs 6
Astros 3

Not the Cubs 6
Astros 3

While I was watching last night’s game, it occurred to me that lately I’ve been doing stuff I haven’t done in years. I figured we needed a refresher course on stuff we’ve forgotten.

Standings: These days standings are kept up-to-the minute online with every win or loss. I know, because I check them three or four times a day. The Astros are in first place in the AL West, which means you can actually look at standings and not despair.
Tonight’s first out on Melky Cabrera was a beautiful diving catch in the gap by Marisnick. That’s this season. McCullers gave up a single to Abreu, then struck out LaRoche and Ramirez.

The bottom of the first was an Altuve up-the-center single, followed by Altuve taking second on a Tucker fly-out to center. Altuve was out at home to end the inning on a Gattis single.

Power Rankings: These are meaningless rankings of teams by perceived baseball virtues, and the Astros virtues are never valued as much as they should be. Pre-2005 there used to be that one power ranking posted weekly by ESPN.com, and I always felt dirty looking at it. Now everybody, from U.S. News & World Report to Cosmopolitan, seems to have a MLB power ranking, and they’re still all meaningless. And I still feel dirty checking them. Especially the one in Cosmopolitan.

McCullers struggled in the second, but the White Sox left the bases loaded.

Chris Carter led off the second with a broken bat single, and then Valbuena hit into a double play. Villar grounded out.

Defending the Catcher. Castro is having a spectacular season, but he’s a catcher. He will not be the offensive player that some random nitwit, me for instance, thinks he should be. It’s time to dust off the reasons a catcher isn’t just judged by his offense.

You know the best thing about an incredibly dumb 2-out error by the catcher? It will always induce a comment by HH. I think Conger’s one-run passed ball and throwing error would have brought HH back from the dead.

Bottom of the 4th, Astros tie it with a Gattis and Carter singles.

ESPN.Com: The best thing about losing was that I never bothered to look at ESPN.com. I was a better person, I think.

Top of the 5th, McCullers gave up a single and two walks, and was pulled for Thatcher. McCullers kept the game close, and struck out 7 in 4.1 innings, but he struggled most of the game, and left with two walks and two HBP. I feel no overwhelming sense of well-being when Thatcher approaches the mound, and last night didn’t change that. After a sac fly and a walk, Thatcher was pulled for Harris. Harris walked Shuck, loading the bases for what I recall was the third time. Flowers flied out to right.

Bottom of the 5th, Villar with a lead-off double, and advances on a Conger grounder to 2nd. Then Marisnick struck out and Springer flied out to center. 2-1 White Sox.

Team Statistics: The last couple of seasons the only statistics I’ve checked from time to time were Kris Karter’s strikeout totals and Jose Altuve’s batting average. Now I’ve discovered Team Statistics. They are apparently fascinating, because I’ve spent hours studying them. Did you know that the Astros are throwing the fewest four-seam fastballs in the majors?

The 6th was the weirdest damn inning ever. Ever. Altuve, who went 2 for 4 with a walk and seems to be hitting again, led off with a single. Tucker doubled moving Altuve to third. Gattis was then called out for interference. I can’t remember the last time I saw an interference call. Carter, who went 2 for 4, hit a sac fly plating Altuve, and Tucker advanced to 3rd on a Cabrera throwing error. Valbuena reached first on an Abreu throwing error that was challenged but upheld, and Tucker scored. How come this shit didn’t happen in 2005? End of the inning, Astros up 3-2.

Clarks: I saw a Clark today. It think it’s been years. It was too bad, too, because I was thinking about how we should be kinder and gentler to Clarks, and then this one Clarked it.

Is there anything in a game better than watching Neshak pitch? Three up, three down.

Rodon was run after the first out. Still three up, three down.

Avg overrated. Wasn’t this what Bill James said all along? Astros are last in average, 12th in OPS. Combine that with good pitching and good defense and you’ve got a team leading its division.

White Sox tied it in the top of the 9th with a Beckham pinch hit home run off Qualls.

Extra innings can be exciting, interesting things. But not last night. Kris came in from Austin and I turned off the tv after the 9th because, well, that’s what you’re supposed to do. The Stros lost in 11. For some reason the Box gives the loss to Fields, but it looks from the play by play that Sipp took the loss. Sipp has been money, but something seems wrong. I think that’s three losses in 7 games.

Colorless Jose Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage

Detroit 1Q84
Astros some less

submitted by NeilT

I’m really excited about the long weekend. I plan to fish tomorrow if it doesn’t rain, and the long weekend at the start of the summer just feels luxurious like it’s never felt before. Maybe it’s because the Astros have played so well. Tonight I sat on the porch and drank the season’s first gin and tonic—I’d had the bottle of tonic water unopened in the frig since last summer. I smoked a cigar and drank a couple of gins and tonics made with the dried out lime I found in the crisper and read my book, Colorless Tsukuru Tazake and his Years of Pilgrimage, by Haruke Murakami. I’ve read two other novels by Murakami, Kafka on the Shore and 1Q84, and I liked them both. His novels live in a mundane world measured against the strange.

The game was on in the house and I was listening to the TV feed through the speakers on the patio. Since I didn’t have Comcast I’m late to the party, and I hate to admit how poor my baseball sensibilities are, but I don’t mind Ashby at all. If I’m sitting on the porch and just listening without watching, I can follow the game pretty well. And I find him and Blum funny, and him and Brownie fine. It’s heresy, I know, but there you are. I even like the banter with Julia. I’ll gladly give up my recap space if you want somebody with better taste.

Anyway, I managed about 40 pages of the novel during the game. Like I said, Murakami writes a strange novel. This one is about a guy who doesn’t appear to be anything special, hence the “colorless”. He’s very short, not more than 5’5” I’d guess, and he has a wonderful life at a very young age. His best friend is a bat named Lightning, and he does everything with that bat. His last year of high school he wins the school batting championship, ending the season with a .341 average. But then he goes home over a college break and calls the bat, just to hang out, you know? And the bat won’t talk to him. He pushes. He calls the bat every day and the bat won’t answer his calls. Finally the bat returns his call.

“Jose Tsukuru,” the bat says, “I can’t see you again.” “But why?” says Jose. “You know why,” says Lightning.

Of course Tsukuru has no clue, and neither does the reader. Why does a bat who has been your closest companion suddenly shun you? Tsukuru assumes it’s his own failing, and the reader wonders, what has Jose Tsukuru done to deserve his fate? Tonight Jose Tsukuru went 0 for 4, and his average slipped below .300.

The novel jumps around in time, and Tsukuru in the present is in his late 30s and an engineer who works on the design of railroad stations. You wouldn’t think there was much call for a designer of railroad stations, but this is Japan, not Texas, and for Japanese engineers railroad station work is probably as common as highway interchanges for Texas engineers. Tsukuru meets a girl, Homaruna, who he likes. They go out. They sleep together.

McHugh made one bad pitch, but when you’ve got a team batting .228, you can’t really afford a lot of mistakes. In the top of the third, the Stros had gone up by 2 after Valbuena reached on a Kinsler error, allowing Castro to score. Then Springer doubled driving in Valbuena. McHugh’s mistake was to some dude named J.D. Martinez. Where did this guy come from? Martinez: 3-run homer.

So back to the novel, Homeruna tells Tsukuru that she will be friends, but she will not sleep with Tsukuru again until he tells her the name of his bat, Lightning, so that she can find where Lightning is.

Poor Tsukuru! He has fallen in love with Homeruna, and she has deserted him! Springer has a great night, 2 for 4, but no Homeruna. Gattis goes 0 for 3 with one walk, Tucker 0 for 3, Rasmus, 0 for 3 with a golden sombrero, Carter 0 for 3 with 2 Ks. It was ugly. Ugly. In the book, Homeruna is a very attractive woman, but when she’s not there, it’s ugly. And really, what can Tsukuru do when the woman he desires won’t sleep with him?

Castro, by the way, went 2 for 3. Nice night for Castro. Nice night for Springer.

I’m about a quarter through the novel. I’ll follow it to the end (unless, of course, I’m shunned for being ok with Ashby), but I gots to tell ya: after tonight it’s one hard read. I hope Jose Tsukuru finds out why Lightning is shunning him. I hope Homeruna sleeps with the Astros again. But you know what? After the last three years, it’s hard to have much faith. I still expect that at the end of the night it will be 6-2.

I’ll admit it, I don’t have the energy to care to write a recap when the Astros lose. I just don’t but I push through it and write something anyway. I do not know if anyone reads the recaps, or if mine are just that lackluster compared to others, and I’m woman enough to admit, many of them are way better than mine. I try to be clever and witty but you know, maybe I am not. I think I can be clever in as-it-is-happening moments, but maybe it is all in my head. Just like I try to be clever and witty the Astros try to score runs. Sometimes it just doesn’t happen, like last night.

There are all kinds of discussions regarding whether this team is legit. It is true, they are legit. They are a real baseball team. I am still hesitant to believe they can hold this success up for a full season. It just seems like they go on a win streak and then a losing streak. I like the win streak aspect it is the losing streak aspect that scares the *&($ out of me.

I do not have the same faith in Khris Karter that some do. Would we have to wait almost half a season every season before he starts hitting? I do not know that I have ever seen a player make hitting a homerun so easy. Then again, when he swings and misses it cannot look any uglier.

Then there is Marisnick. Everyone was so excited he started out the season so great, well, now I worry that the wagon got to full and he can’t pull it anymore. I jumped off a while back because I figure anyone I specifically root for will not have the kind of success they should enjoy.

I did like seeing McMullers starting yesterday. I wish Hinch had let him finish the 5th inning. He’s a good looking kid. I was looking at him and was wondering what his dad looked like (because let me be honest, I’m not into May-December things). Well, I saw him on the television. He seems like a nice guy. Not sure where Lance gets his olive skin coloring from but it looks good on him.

Altuve has become the next “Biggio.” And make no mistake, I do not say that lightly. I honestly think he is the type of player they should all aspire to be. He works hard and is humble. Between those two things he is the ideal role model. I wish he spent more time in Houston but knowing how close he is to his family, I understand why he goes home in the off-season. He is a great story and I hope the story is just at the beginning for him.

I was thinking of going to Corpus Christi this upcoming weekend to go to a Hooks game. I did not realize when I started planning this trip that it is Memorial Day weekend. I do not really want to drive on a holiday weekend. Then Correa and McMullers get called up. There are still a lot of outstanding players to see but not sure I want to drive with a lot of other people on the roads. I do not trust other drivers.

I am planning to go to the game tomorrow, so if you are there, leave me a note here and maybe I will stop and say hi.

Welcome home, first place Houston Astros!

Giants @ Astros May 12-13, 2015

submitted by Mr. Happy

The Giants, losers of two of their last four games, invade MMPUS for a brief two-game set against the Good Guys. The Giants are coming in from the City-By-the-Bay, where they split a four game set against the Miami Marlins. The Astros are fresh off of a quick west coast swing through Anaheuim, where the Astros split a four game set with the Halos. Coming into play on May 12, the Giants have hit .257 as a team and have pitched to a 3.63 ERA in compiling their 16-16 mark. On the other hand, the Astros have a team batting average of .228 coming into the series and have pitched to a 3.45 team ERA in getting to their 20-12 record.

Game One May 12, 2015

Chris Heston (2-3 3.38) v. Collin McHugh (4-0 3.23)

The Astros have never seen Mr. Heston, who is a 27 year old right hander, which means that he’ll probably look like Cy Young against the Good Guys, although lefties are hitting a robust .375 against him, while he’s been pretty good against righties, holding them to a .212 batting average. Heston has allowed two more runs per game in his road starts as compared to his home starts, and he’s been much better at night than during the day.

The Gints haven’t seen much of McHugh, with only Nori Aoki, who is 2-6 against McHugh, and Casey McGhee, who is 0-2 against McHugh, having any at-bats against him. Heston gives up some hits (42 in 37.1 frames), because his batting average against is .282, and his WHIP is 1.39. On the other hand, McHugh’s batting average against thus far is .245, and his WHIP is 1.10. I won’t be a bit surprised if this one is a close, low scoring game that comes down to the bullpens.

Game Two May 13, 2015

Tim Hudson (1-3 4.50) v. Brett Oberholtzer (0-0 0.00)

At this stage in his career, Mr. Hudson pitches to contact, as he’s given up 44 hits in 40 innings, his batting average against is .289 and his WHIP is 1.33. Hudson has had some problems keeping the ball in the yard; he’s allowed six taters in 40 innings. With only 19 strikeouts and nine walks in 40 frames, Hudson is usually around the plate, but he doesn’t have swing-and-miss stuff. Current Astros are only 7-29 against Hudson, but the Good Guys are led by Colby Rasmus, who’s 6-14 with two jacks and a two-bagger against Hudson. The Piranha is the only other Astro to have a knock against Hudson. Rasmus is my pick-to-click in this game.

On the other hand, we really don’t know what to expect out of the 25 year old Oberholtzer, who’s never faced any of the Giants players, in his first outing of the season, except that he’s probably on a tight pitch count. Based upon last season, Oberholtzer is a soft-tossing portsider who pitches to contact and who needs to have good command because, at least last season, he lacked a finish-off pitch. Oberholtzer has had some problems with base traffic, surrendering 170 hits in 143.1 innings pitched. He had a disturbingly generous WHIP of 1.35 last season. This one could be a high scoring affair.

So, the Astros lost again. They are 7 games over .500 and 4 games in first. You may think I should still be hopeful, but I kind of am not. I did notice this current streak of playing shitty baseball and only winning 2 out of the last 8 games is almost the complete opposite of the 10 game win streak they had earlier this year. So many people were wanting to trade for more pitching and let’s call Correa up, etc. Well, I think this season is somewhere in between the 10 game win streak and the 2 wins in 8 games column. This team has potential to be amazing and it also have the potential to stink up a bathroom.

What brought on this kind of thinking you probably are not wondering. Well, this morning as I’m walking into the office, I pass one guy that says bring up Correa and I just smile and keep going. Correa is not going to turn this team into the 10 game win streak type of team alone. Yes, he may help, but one player a team does not make. I believe this team will have offensive woes as long as they continue to lead the league in strike outs (1st in AL, 2nd in MLB). If you put the ball in play then you at least have a chance it will drop for a hit or the fielder throws it away. But standing there taking pitches or swings and misses does not help.

I guess I’m tired of their bad baseball of late. I believe I know what this team really is and I rather hope what I believe is wrong (in a good way for the team). I just want them to play good solid baseball. I want half the strike outs and error free play. Is that really too much to ask?

Astros lose 11 to 3 and start the wrong kind of streak after getting swept by Rangers

WP: Colby Lewis (2-2)
LP: Samuel Deduno (0-1)

BOX
GameZone

The Astros came home after a historically successful road trip only to shit in their own beds. Win 10 in a row, great young team. Lose three in a row, same old shitty Astros. Okay, maybe not. The road warriors are 10-2 on the road though, and just 8-8 at home. And the Astros are still 18 -10 overall, and in first place by 5 games. They still have the second best record in MLB.

Samuel Deduno pitched a scoreless first inning and then all hell broke loose. After surrendering 4 runs in the 2nd inning, he became the sacrificial lamb destined to eat innings at whatever the cost in order to save the arms in the bullpen. Four point two innings into the game and Deduno had been pummeled, giving up 11hits, 3 walks, and 13 runs. Maybe he’s not the answer for who is the fifth starter. Relief pitchers Joe Thatcher, Will Harris, and Tony Sipp closed out the game, each pitching fairly well.

The batters weren’t much help. Jose Altuve and Jake Marisnick were hit-less and saw their still stellar averages drop to .339 and .342. Evan Gattis got two hits and has seen his average climb above the Mendoza Line to .205. George Springer sat this one out and Chris Carter hit another meaningless homerun that didn’t help anything but his homerun total, which now stands at four.

The Rangers offense is benefiting from a healthy Prince Felder and is getting outstanding contributions from journeymen Kyle Blanks and Carlos Peguero. Blanks has been blistering the ball to the tune of a .357 average and Peguero hit 2 homeruns last night and had three for the series. Thanks to the Astros (and Seattle) the Rangers are no longer in last place in the division, and now stand 6.5 games behind the leading Astros.

Thursday the Astros fly to Anaheim and face the Angels in a four game series. Collin McHugh will take his perfect 4-0 record and go against Hector Santiago and his 2 wins and 2 losses. Game time is 9:05pm CST. It’s right on time to put the ugly three game losing streak in to a shit filled bed, set it on fire, and start a brand new winning one.

Attendance – 22230
Game Time – 2:32
