McHugh + Orange Crush = Big Win

Posted on June 24, 2015 by MusicMan in Game Recaps, News

Astros 13, The Angels Angels of Anaheim 3

W: McHugh (8-3)  L: Wilson (5-6)

HR: Correa (4), Valbuena (18, 19)

Box Score
Win probability

The Astros poured it on Tuesday night, going up 7-0 early and never looking back on their way to a 13-3 victory.

The 13 runs were impressive, no doubt, but the best news of the night might have been Colin McHugh regaining his form to go 8 innings of 2 run ball with only 1 walk allowed.  McHugh’s success is critical to the Astros maintaining their position at the top of the division, and the last couple of starts have seen him (/knocking on wood furiously) turn the corner from an awful May.

Luis Valbuena launched two more bombs, bringing him to 19.  The man is simply on fire: for his last 11 games, he has 7 HR, 14 RBI, and is hitting .268/.362/.780.

As impressive as that may be, the night belonged to Carlos Correa, who launched a 3-run shot in the second to break the game open, and went 3-6 with a double and the aforementioned home run.  He is now hitting .308/.338/.569 with 4 steals and stellar defense, and is clearly overqualified for this level.  Expect a callup to a higher league any day now.

Cards 13
Phils 4

Hey!  This is NeilT!  Really!

I, NeilT, am writing this week’s Friday recap.  I signed in using my, NeilT’s, favorite password, Astros4Ever, which I would only know if I were NeilT.  I wouldn’t know that password if I were in the Cardinals’ front office.

Tonight the Houston Astros play the Seattle Mariners, which is an American League team.  Did you know that another American League team, the New York Yankees, have played the Cards in the World Series five separate times?  And did you know that the Cards have won the World Series 11 times?  I, NeilT, believe the Redbirds are a great organization, and one that any team in baseball, and particularly the Houston Astros, should emulate.

Of course it’s been a roller coaster couple of weeks for my, NeilT’s, team, the Houston Astros.  Just last week the Houston Astros ended a seven game losing streak.  Meanwhile the Cards, which have the best record in baseball, have won 6 of their last 10 games for a season-leading 44 wins!  Why would a team with that kind of record need to hack into the Houston Astros’ database?  It seems very unlikely to me, NeilT.

The best news for the Houston Astros is the performance of their rookie first draft pick, Carlos Correa.  Did you know that the Cardinals have many draft picks who are successful major league players?  Here are just some of the Cards’ great recent draft picks:   Colby Rasmus, Allen Craig, Daniel Descalso, Jaime Garcia, Jon Jay, Luke Gregerson, Chris Perez, Matt Carpenter, Trevor Rosenthal, Matt Adams, and Lance Lynn.  They once  drafted Brett Wallace in the first round! Jockety! Why would a team with such a successful history of great drafts want to hack into the Houston Astros’ database?  The Houston Astros need to learn from the Cardinals, particularly about getting rid of Jeff Luhnow.  He was an arrogant insufferable twit when he was here, and I’m certain he hasn’t changed.  That’s me, NeilT.  I, NeilT, am certain that he hasn’t changed.

Yes, I, NeilT, think that there is much that the Houston Astros could learn from a great organization like the Redbirds.  Tonight the Houston Astros playthe Seattle Mariners, both American League teams, while the Cardinals played the Phillies.  Since 1948, the Cardinals have won 552 of their 1029 meetings with the Phillies, for a winning percentage of .532.  And, by the way, the Cardinals have won 377 of their 706 meetings with the Houston Astros, for an even higher winning percentage, .536.  I, NeilT, using my favorite password, Astros4Ever, think that if officials of the St. Louis Cardinals fine baseball organization hacked the Houston Astros database, they must have done so for a higher purpose, like protecting the Houston Astros from being embarrassed in a World Series against an excellent team like the Cards.

So the Houston Astros play the Seattle Mariners on the West Coast, and that game’s not over yet.  Meanwhile in the first inning against the Phillies, Tyler Lyons got the start in place of Lance Lynn (right forearm strain), against Phillippe Aumont for Cole Hamels (minor hamstring strain). The Astros had a lot of information on Hamels in their Ground Control database, but these things change so quickly.

Not much changes with the Cardinals though, they are still the best organization in baseball. Lyons gave up two singles in the first , but got out of the inning with a 4-6-3 double play, Wong to Peralta to Reunolds. The second was also rough, with two walks, an error, and a coaching visit.  There’s nothing like the Cardinals’ coaching staff, and the visit was followed by a fly ball out and a flawless third, and a one- hit fourth. Lyons gave up 3 in the fifth, but what a quality start.

Lyons came out for Villanueva in the sixth. The Phils scored one more in the bottom of the eighth off of Socolovitch.

Meanwhile the Cardinals’ offense was destroying Aumont. Heyward led off the second with a double, followed by Molina’s second bomb of the season. I think Molina is kgetting hot. With two outs, Lyons helped himself with a single followed by a Wong (8) line-drive Wong Kabong. End of the second, 4-0.

In the fourth, Lyons walked and made third on a Wong ground out, Carpenter walked, then both scored on a Peralta double. End of the fourth, 6-0.

Top of the fifth, de Fratus replaced Aumont but had no better luck. Molina singled, Grichuk singled, Jay singled, then Lyons singled and drove in Molina. Was Lyons on fire or what?

Wong k’d. Carpenter singled, driving in Grichuk. Jay scored on a Peralta sac fly. Reynolds doubled, driving in 2 more. End of the inning, 11-0.

Grichuk (4) homered in the sixth. 12-3.  With the final Phillies score, that was all she wrote.

This is NeilT with another great recap!  Really!

Houston Rocks Colorado

Astros have won four games in a row and now have a 7 – 1 inter-league record.

WP: Brett Oberholtzer (2 – 1)
LP: Kyle Kendrick (2 – 9)

It did not take long for the Astros to get on top. George Springer, lead off the game with a single up the middle and Carlos Correra drove him home with a two run home-run to jump out for a quick 2 – 0 lead. Springer has now hit safely in his last 10 games. Correra is still only 20 years old. Three more Astros homers followed on the night and I do believe that Brett Oberholzter has solidified his claim for a permanent spot in the rotation.

Olberholtzer (ERA 2.73) lasted 6.1 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking none. It wasn’t great or dominating but it was a good performance, the kind you hope for from a fourth or fifth man in a rotation. Josh Fields finished the 7 inning for Oberholtzer while Joe Thatcher (one batter) and Pat Nechek (two batters) were perfect in the 8th inning. Chad Quall closed the game in the ninth but not before allowing a solo home-run to Carlos Gonzalez.

On the night the Astros hit four home-runs, Carlos Correra’s was his third on the year, which FWIW, puts him one ahead of Robinson Cano’s total. Preston Tucker (3), Chris Carter (12), and Jake Marisnick (5), were responsible for the other three dingers hit Wednesday. The Astros have hit multiple home runs in 26 games this season and in those 26 games, the Astros are undefeated, making it the longest winning streak in multi-homer games in franchise history. The previous record was a 22-game streak, set in 1994. Oh yeah, since it was played in a NL park I should mention, Oberholtzer received a base on balls in his one plate appearance.

The Astros remain in Denver Thursday for a day game that starts at 2:10 pm local time. Collin McHugh (6-3) – 5.08 ERA faces off against Dave Hale (2-1) – 4.56 ERA

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s George Springer

Rockies 3, Astros 6
W: Keuchel, L: Bettis, S: Gregerson

MLB recap
Game Zone

There are parts of this team that I may not appreciate as much as some, but there are some parts that I adore. Right now, one of those parts is Mr. George Springer. He’s been on-fire for the past week. Mr. Springer has has hit .342 for the last 30 games, .397 for the last 15 and .483 in the last 7. I think Mr. Springer found his groove.

Between him and Mr. Correa (who is hitting a measly .310 in his first 7 games) I am starting to believe this team could make it to the playoffs and possibly win. But I do so with trepidation.

I think the hamstring injury break that Jose Altuve has been forced to take (and I hope the rest takes care of any future issues he may have) will do good for him. Kind of get his bearings back in order.

Keuchel was what we are used to expecting now. He tossed 5 perfect innings but then made a little swerve in the road and ended up giving 3 runs through 6 and 2/3rd innings. Thatcher came in to finish the 7th inning for him and Neshek and Gregerson sealed the win for him.

Springer and Correa did hog most of the hits (3 a piece) and Tucker, Rasmus and Gonzalez got the other three. Tucker and Rasmus got 4 of the RBIS on the night, but Springer wasn’t going to be left out of those stats either, getting a pair for himself.

Tomorrow the Astros have a day game, hopefully those that are able to attend do not need a boat or raft to get there and they get to see an Astros win.

Keep the Customers Satisfied

Astros 10
King Felix 1/3

Gee but it’s great to be back home
Home is where I want to be.
I’ve been on the road so long my friend,
And if you came along
I know you couldn’t disagree.

It’s the same old story, yeah
Everywhere I go,
I get slandered, libeled,
I hear words I never heard in the Bible
And I’m one step ahead of the shoe shine
Two steps away from the county line
Just trying to keep my customers satisfied,
Satisfied.

It was the second largest crowd of the season.

Here’s HH’s summary of the first inning from the Game Zone: “Astros send 12 men to the plate and score 8 runs in the first, beat the living shit out of King Felix.” Hinch also summarized it, as reported on MLB.Com: “[P]robably one of our best innings of the year.” Well duh.

Altuve led off with a single, Tucker walked, Springer hit an RBI double, Gattis reached on an FC scoring Tucker and Springer on an E1. There was a coaching visit to the mound. Astros 3, King Felix Fish Wranglers 0.

Rasmus walks and then, unbelievably, Correa Kd, and I was there to see it. Valbueno Valbuengoed, leading the club now with Home Runs with 13. Astros 5, King Felix Pond Scum 0.

With one out Carter hit a hard single to left and Castro followed with the second home of the inning. King Felix took his neck tat and went home. Astros 8, King Felix gone. According to the tv guys, it was only the second time Felix had been run in 1/3rd inning. It was very satisfying.

That was pretty much the game, but there was some other stuff of interest. Correa homered in the second, and it was about what you’d expect. The heavens parted and a white dove descended: the usual stuff for Correa. Carter homered in the 5th. Everybody hit (except for Marisnick who had 2 at-bats for Springer), but only Carter had multiple hits with a single and a HR.

And the Sucky Sea Slugs were shut out by Oberholtzer, who allowed only four singles and three walks, and Thatcher in the 9th. Oberholtzer was very good.

The only bad news was Altuve came out in the 2nd after trying to beat a grounder to second. “Hamstring twinge,” according to the TV. If they played like this every night Jim R wouldn’t have to put up with our bitching.

White Sox 4, Astros 2: If Only

White Sox 4, Astros 2

W: Rodon (2-0)  L: Keuchel (7-2) S: Robertson (12)

HR: Correa (1), Someone who is not Correa (10)

Box score
Win probability

IF ONLY…

  • …Gordon Beckham hadn’t snagged Correa’s screamer with 1st and 2nd in the 4th
  • …Keuchel could have one pitch to Jose Abreu back
  • …Hinch had let Keuchel work the 8th
  • …Hinch had called on literally anyone but Qualls in the 8th
  • …a remotely competent umpire were working the plate, thus putting the tying runs on for the team’s best contact hitter in the 9th

For all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are these, ‘It might have been’.

All these ifs and buts amount to candy, nuts, and a 6 game losing streak.  But let’s focus on Correa’s bomb, his first steal, and his outrageous talent, and maybe we’ll have a Merry Christmas.
