next Astros retired numbers

I'm in a good mood because of the win and started feeling Astro nostalgic.  It's been discussed here several times, but what's the latest guess on Astros next retired numbers after Bagwell officially retires (assuming he is next)  I heard J.R.Richard or Cedeno.  I never seem to hear anything about Joe Niekro in regard to retired number potential.  The man had a helluva career and took the team on his back in 80 in that glorious Dodger one game playoff.

The next number retired after "5" should be "7."  No others should be retired until maybe Berkman down the line.  The Astros have too many retired numbers already, in my opinion.

With all the big name pitchers that have worn the star on their hat, Niekro is the all time Astros win-leader. He deserves a little more attention me thinks.

I agree.  The Astros have WAY too many retired numbers right now.  As of now, they should have exactly one....49.  #5 and #7 should be next, but after that, no one comes close in my opinion.

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I think "34"--Ryan--was a legitimate number to retire, too, but just those two before Bagwell and Biggio.

Exactly. Except, I really don't have a problem with #24. When I was a kid, he was the man. It bothered me seeing Jason Lane wearing it before it was retired. Of course, now I realize it wasn't the number.

This is more of an AD thread, but the Astros have had one of the most liberal policies on retiring numbers of any team in MLB.  I think, with VERY rare exceptions, retired numbers should be limited to Hall of Fame players who spent MOST (not some) of their career with the Astros.  Period.

Exactly.  Nolan Ryan was a HOF player, but he doesn't deserve his number retired by the Astros.  Jose Cruz was a nice player, as was Jimmy Wynn.  Neither deserve their numbers retired.  The idea of retiring JR Richard's number is comical.  Larry Dierker, for all his many years of contribution in various capacities is the only non-current Astros who is worthy of even consideration.  Biggio and Bagwell are no brainers.

While I agree with the general idea here, when it comes to Nolan -- he did spend longer in Houston than anywhere else.

I'm on the exact same page as Hudson.  I'd put Oswalt and Berkman on the watch list, but they're still years away from consideration.

Were Ryan wearing an Astros cap in the HOF, then I'd consider it.  Let the Rangers retire his number.

Pretty sure the Rangers did retire his number.

Ryan's best years were in California...let THEM retire his number.

The Astros are going to have 9 or 10 numbers retired before the organization is 50 years old...
