AJ has been committed to giving guys scheduled rest days. I bet he finds ways to work Straw into the lineup, or at least into games as a PR/defensive substitute in the OF. And no, he's not as good a defensive CFer as Marisnick. Note that similar to personal catchers, JVs personal CFer is Jake. The odd man out seems to more likely be Kemp, but if he isn't traded before the roster crunch then Straw could go down since he has options and TK does not.
Kemp and Straw are very similar players, except for the RH/LH hitting thing.
Except Straw can play short and Kemp apparently can't.Of course the Astros shortstop is usually stationed out in right field somewhere so maybe it doesn't matter too much.
Well. I’m gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Speed, power, OF defense (especially the arm) are all differences, with a significant edge to Straw except power where Kemp has the edge.
Why does kemp need to be the odd man out? Send Straw down, since he has options, when Correa returns. keep Kemp on the roster so you don’t lose him. Let Straw spend a month in the minors working at SS and bring him back up when the rosters expand in September.
It seems like a no-brainer to me. The only wild card is if Kemp gets included in a trade which is entirely possible. Is this the last year that rosters expand in September?
Elimination of 40-man active roster limit in September. From September 1st through the end of the championship season, all Clubs must carry 28 players on the active roster.
Josh James to the 10 day IL. Sneed up.
Pressly dealing with a bum knee per Tags"Hinch said he's been trying to stay away from RHP Ryan Pressly after he was smoked on the knee by a one-hopper off the bat of Andrelton Simmons on Thursday."
Chirinos has a sore shoulder and won't play for a few days. Stubbs called up and Sneed optioned. They don't think it'll require an IL stint Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
Astros pitching coach Brent Strom underwent GI surgery overnight and will be away from the team for a few days.

Peacock's line yesterday - 0 outs, 2 hits, 2 walks, 4 earned runs. Some of those runs are probably due to lousy pitching by McCurry.
Peacock was pretty lousy too. His rehab outings have not been good.
Is there a limit to how long he can be on rehab before they have to make some sort of (presumably irreversible) move (like releasing him, or releasing somebody else to make room for him)?
20 days for position players, 30 days for pitchers.
Thanks. I don't suppose it's possible to say he's not right and send him back to the IL. That would open the door to too many shenanigans.
Brad started his rehab this month, so he won't have to be added to the active roster until after rosters expand Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
The good news is he says he feels great; the bad news is he has been pitching lousy.
"We got some good news," said Gerrit Cole about the results from the doc on his hamstring. "Not super serious." Getting treatment and see how it responds.Edit: that was from a Julia tweet, btw.

Double-win here to see McCullers and Strom on the field
'Tis but a scratch.
Has anybody heard anything about James recently?
Aledmys Diaz to IL for foul off top of foot, Sneed recalled.
New McTaggart mctweet:Diaz is going on IL because he became light-headed and dizzy on the bus on the way to ballpark yesterday and went to hospital. No official diagnosis, but he should be fine.
No diagnosis, and they know he'll be fine, but it's going to last 10 days?
The Astros' medical staff works in mysterious ways.
I suspect they need the extra arm now. Diaz is probably fine.
Correa out of the lineup today and unavailable for comment. That latter part disturbs me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think Carlos may have just one more year to show he can play a full season. His injury history is becoming a threat to his career potential. He is at least at some risk of having to become a Bill Spiers type player. One with superb talent but only able to play part-time because of back issues.Of course I could be, and hopefully am, wrong.
You don't give up on talent like he has.
I have had two back surgeries for herniated discs. Instant cure, and easy rehab. Maybe this offseason he will fix this.
All depends on what this is, whether it's the same as last season's injury, and whether there's a fix. All questions that those of us outside the organization know diddley squat about.
There is a fix for disc issues. The good thing is Yuli hits behind Yordan for awhile.
Not really. Not for peak performance. As a normally functioning human... sure... they really can’t fix bad discs for an elite athlete.. degenerative is an important word. I hope I’m wrong.
You are fucking wrong. Where did you go to med school?
Do you suffer from degenerative disc disease? I do. It has altered the last 25 years of my life. Maybe you can recommend a doctor....?
Correa and Sanchez both to the IL. Sanchez with a pec issue hence the reduced velocity tonight.
Yep, heard that. Hinch took him out because he was hurting. Makes sense now.
All I know is that I was wrong about Correa. I thought that we had the next A-Rod. Wellsir, he's not even in the same stratosphere with A Rod. Good player? Yes. All Star. If healthy, maybe. There are better shortstops in the game, e.g., Lindor. And then this injury crap. Untouchable? Definitely not. Sell high. But sell.
When healthy, A-Rod is still a good comp. When you look at the player A-Rod was through 24 and the player Correa is when healthy, he's not that far behind. Health is obviously huge, I hope we're not looking at a Troy Tulowitzki on our hands but it's looking more and more like it Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
Tulowitzki would be great. Tulowitzki was the best player in baseball for a few years.
Crazy thought - What about flipping positions for Correa and Bregman. Third would be a bit less physically demanding for Correa and Bregman can handle SS. Might keep Correa on the field more.
So who gets the call with two new members of the IL? Bring up one of the AAAA starters (Framber, Urquidy, etc), or punch Sneed's ticket again for Sanchez, and Straw or maybe Tucker for Correa?
Mayfield?
Injuries are disappointing, for sure, but I would not try to trade him, especially not now. He is ARod talent when healthy. I’d be patient with him.
Isn’t he a replacement for Diaz?
While I agree with you, it wouldn’t stop me from seeing what I could get for him in the off-season. If some team was willing to give me 2 top prospects, by top I mean a Whitley and Alvarez/Tucker type of duo, I’d have to consider making that deal.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Prospects? I'd be looking for top tier MLB talent in return. Actually, I wouldn't be looking. I'd listen to offers but not shop him.
Correa was, for a second, the best player. It's easy to forget with everything that eventually happened but Carlos Correa, not Jose Altuve, would have been the MVP in 2017 if he had not gotten hurt. He was absolutely demolishing baseballs before(was it the wrist? Thumb? Think it was thumb) the injury. And he still has that ability, if we ever see it for a full 162Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
I haven't forgotten anything about Correa's '17. I'm just saying the comparison was off. Over an 8 year span Tulo was good for 5+ WAR six times--and four of those were 6+. Correa's peak thus far was his 4.5 in 2017.
I’m a little disappointed. I was hoping that the Astros would bring Tucker up, stick him at first, put Yuli at third, and put Bregs at ss. (And maybe play a little Tucker in RF as well.) Straw isn’t a shortstop. And the combination of Straw and Altuve is terrible for double plays. All of this really leads me to question what the Astros think about Tucker. He’s an untouchable prospect. But they won’t bring him up when he is needed.
The Astros are calling up Toro to help with the infield. He's not on the 40 man, so corresponding moves should be interesting.
How about finally jettisoning Brady Rogers? Why in the world is he on the 40 man roster?
I count 41 people on the Astros current 40-man (which does not include McCullers). Is someone else on the 60 day IL that's not reflected on the linked roster? Of course, counting has never been my strong suit.
I think Guduan's suspension temporarily removes him from the 40-man.
Wow. Did not see this coming.
Who did? He has not been in RR that long, but he is hitting .424. He plays 3B, not SS. Does this mean Bregman is going to SS? Is Correa not coming back any time soon? Is Mayfield out? He plays a solid SS but has not hit.Strange decision.
I can only imagine this is about offensive expectations.
In self defense I'm preparing for more injury news we haven't heard about yet.
Sure, but at what defensive position?
If I say "Correa to the 60 day" enough I know it won't be true.
Kaplan: "It’s worth noting that Toro would’ve been Rule 5 eligible this winter, so the Astros would’ve added him to their 40-man roster in November, if not during this season."
Please, not Bregman.
Somebody check on Snuffy.
It's worth noting, I think, that Toro is a switch hitter.
Luhnow said directly that last night spurred them to make a move for more offense. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Still no word on the corresponding 40 man?
Toro seems to be a short term stop gap until Diaz gets back. I think that they said he was close on last night's broadcast.
Damn. That really sucks. I thought, given how well he threw in the last ones, that his knee was healed.
Unless he hits and creates a nice problem.
Harris gets the 8th, and it is all hands on deck for the 7th. Framber could help this team so much if he would just throw strikes.
His first couple of starts after he came back a month or whenever ago had me so excited that he may have figured something out, but it didn't last. He's got all the potential in the world.
McHugh has had better results lately, but I doubt think there's been much high leverage lately. Biagini is still in RR?
Biagini and Toro up for Pressly IL and Mayfield AAA
Biagini was not too good in RR
Pitched 2 games, less than 2 innings. Horrible in the first, good in the second.

WTF is wrong with Carlos and his back? Was this nothing more than stiffness and soreness after a long flight and a panicked rush to the IL?
This perplexes me. I am no doctor, but I have had herniated discs (L3-L5). Incredibly painful. Sciatic nerve pain. I could not function normally with the pain. They show up on CAT scans or an MRI, and I have had two surgeries, which were easy, immediate fixes. The rehab in 2015 was nothing, and I was almost 70.WTF is wrong with Carlos and his back? Was this nothing more than stiffness and soreness after a long flight and a panicked rush to the IL?
I wonder if the Texans have player named "Orbit"...
I read somewhere his MRI came back negative. So yes just stiffness.Maybe he's a master baiter too.
He's in Houston.
Can he hit with runners on base?
He oughta! Name's built around RBI!
I have, and am watching him now. I just feel like he's the always forgotten guy. Mine was sort of a where's Waldo question, though why anyone would get that without context spelled out I have no idea.

Whenever he comes back from his own injury.
None are shutdown relievers for high leverage situations. I know we have bodies.
I would assume that until Pressly gets back, it's Smith in the 7th, Harris in the 8th, and Osuna in the 9th.

Getting the bullpen rested and healthy should take priority over going for best record. Ideally they would call up a bunch of AAA arms to eat innings for several weeks and not be too picky about the details... but then there's that damned division race, which won't quite go away. 9 games up with less than a month to play is very nice... except for the small matter of those 4 remaining head to head games with the A's. Hopefully a good outcome in those games will leave the team two weeks for bullpen R&R.The A's scare the hell out of me right now. Not because they're going to win the division (still only a very slight chance) but because they can still do terrible damage to the Astros without ever catching them or facing them in the playoffs. If the A's can keep the division race alive until almost the end, that means all these tired and less than completely healthy bullpen pitchers will have to keep grinding away instead of getting a break. That would put the team in a bad place entering the postseason.
Has there been a report on what is wrong with McHugh?

Correa has yet to swing a bat.
Sanchez has yet to throw a ball
WTF do the last few posts mean? Sandy Koufax also did not pitch.
I think having to play hard until the end is a good thing. Teams that can coast in have a hard time turning on again.
Pressly's return looks good, he's playing catch and should hopefully be back by the end of the month.Sanchez has not begun to throw a baseball yet.Correa has not begun to swing a bat yet.James was activated today. This is a thread about injured players and their recovery.[/No kidding. I probably would never have figured it out.
Hinch said today on MLB radio that Sanchez is still shut down, is getting more evaluations, and he is concerned that Sanchez will not be ready for the post-season. He said that they will know more when they get back to Houston.
Translation: His arm fell off yesterday.
For those keeping track, Correa is swinging the bat and taking ground balls in the field according to Luhnow. No ETA
How does one get this fixed?
Lumbar discectomy, I assume. Several MLB position players have had the proceedure with varying results upon return, but I can't think of one as young as Correa, Neil Walker was 30, that's as close as I get.
Correa has a ruptured disk?
I've been assuming it's a disc issue, yes. Come to think of it, have they ever announced what was specifically wrong with him?
I've been assuming he has a disc issue, yes. Come to think of it, have they ever announced what was specifically wrong with him? eta: I am aware that this is not why he's currently on the DL, and am not advocating that he have back surgery this offseason.
I have arthritis in my lower back. Constant and nagging pain. And Aleve only goes so far. I have no idea what is wrong with Correa's back, but I know I couldn't swing a bat with my condition. I hope that what he has is fixable.
With a neurosurgeon, simple disc surgery is easy.
per Berman, Springer will be evaluated tomorrow and is considered day to day.
Concussion protocol, no doubt. Glad he did not snap his neck.
Yep, I was really worried about neck damage, a cracked bone or something like that.Chandler Rome tweet: Josh Reddick: "When me and Mike got there, (Springer) seemed to be very alert. He just kept saying he had a headache. That was a positive sign. He wasn’t dizzy. He didn’t have any memory loss out there. He made sure he answered all the questions right."
(1:33:00) The "extra wide" warning track got him there. He thot he was closer to the wall than he actually was.....
The Brewers announcers discussed the confusion caused by the length of the warning track last night, as Springer was being attended to. For some reason, the warning track is five feet deep rather than the usual three feet. That's why he jumped too soon. Why is the warning track so deep?
For some reason, the warning track is five feet deep rather than the usual three feet. That's why he jumped too soon. Why is the warning track so deep?
Warning tracks are a lot wider than three feet. The typical track is about 15 feet. The conventional wisdom is giving the outfielder three strides before hitting the wall. Normally, outfielders will familiarize themselves with the track and the wall at every ballpark, usually part of pre-game warmups or bp. I don't know if Springer did that or not, but it's not a park he's used to playing at, so if it's unusually wide, that could be the source of his thinking he was closer than he was.
Snuffy, you appear to be relatively new to baseball. If you want to know the potential consequences of no padded walls and (almost certainly) of no warning tracks, do a little reading about Pete Reiser.
I do have a lot to learn - that's why I am here.Upset to know that the unusual length of the warning track may have had a part in Springer's injury. They mentioned he had not played much on this field.
Springer’s fault for not knowing this. Not the field’s fault or the Brewers’.
Not knowing or forgetting. Either way, it's on the OFer. Reddick said he was yelling to Springer that he had room but doubted George could hear him.
Yep, standand call for other OFers, but damn that noise.Funny (and true): I was pitching a semi-pro game for a Seguin team one weekend. We were on the road, but I do not remember where. The OF had an old-fashioned wood fence 8-10 feet tall, and a guy hit one about a mile off me to LCF. I knew it was gone immediately, and I imagine the fans did too. Not our CFer, though; he took off on a dead run looking up following the ball’s trajectory and intending to catch the ball. Our LFer, who was my teammate at Texas, seemed to be unaware also. He was calling “lotta room, lotta room” until the instant the CF ran into the fence straight on. Thank goodness, he was stunned (and surprised!) but not hurt. Then it was hilarious! Looked like a Roadrunner cartoon. He hit the fence straight on, stuck to it a moment, then slid down to the ground.
Tal's Hill concurs.
10-4Surprised there weren't injuries there....
I remember a game where the batter hit a towering popup right behind 1B. The first baseman was trying to get under it, and you could tell was having trouble with the sun. Our second baseman kept yelling "back...back...back...back" and the first baseman kept moving back towards the outfield. He was still back peddling when the ball landed about five feet in front of him, at which point our second baseman yelled "too much".
Springer's fault? Not like he's played a whole bunch of games in that park. That's harsh.eta: that was his 5th game there. No idea how many were RF vs CF
Why? No fence to run into, gradual slope, embarrassment from falling down might injure pride. Twisted ankle? I suppose that is possible. I liked The Hill but really like what the Astros did with CF. Fences are the issue for hurting OFers.
I remember Berkman falling down trying to make a catch going up the hill. They should have put a flagpole or something on the Hill to make it more challenging.
There was a flagpole on it, and the pole was in play. Richie Sexton hit it with a monster blast and had to settle for a double.
Is there a reason warning track width shouldn’t be standardized?
They should have tied a rottweiler to the pole. Length of the chain varies. If the dog gets the ball, it's still in play. They could have named it Tal.I'm gonna email Reid Ryan right now.
Thank you!
No reason to standardize them.
Yup. Baseball is not “standardized”That’s why we like it.
Fields have differing amounts of foul territory, different ground rules, umps have different strike zones, baseballs have different seams, Coach has different levels of WFW to use. It's what makes baseball great.

Aaron Sanchez to have season ending shoulder surgery.
Correa, Pressly, Springer, James, Peacock, McHugh, Osuna, GreinkeHow will they perform if we get to October?Tucker, your chance is now. This is the last one until 2020.
I'm not sure McHugh or Peacock will be able to pitch at all in September. Anybody heard anything on them this week?
AJ Hinch says George Springer definitely not playing tonight or tomorrow. George is in concussion protocol, so he has to be medically cleared by doctors. AJ says there's a chance we could see Springer in this series, but he's taking it day-by-day.
Watching George in the dugout was very reassuring. He certainly didn't look like someone who had a concussion. He looked like regular George, kidding around with everyone around him. Obviously, this is not a medical diagnosis, but it made me feel better.
He was wearing Reddick's shirt and who knows for pants.
I'm starting to get cautiously optimistic about seeing LMJ pitch this year.
He tweeted a video of it. He was throwing about 50% effort from that slight downhill angle. It looks like he's on step 1 of phase 2.
They haven't publicly entertained that notion, have they? Based on this rehab protocol from Dr. James Andrews (last page) he's on step 0 or 1 (depending on how you count it being halfway up the mound) of a minimum 12 steps before he even starts throwing breaking balls, and another minimum three steps beyond that before starting 15-pitch simulated games. And this probably represents the best case scenario.
I'm just hoping that he's useful next year.
But...if I'm being overly optimistic, let's say he's in week 24 of that plan right now. 6 weeks from now, if the team is still playing, would he not be able to pitch at a game level?

Me too. Luhnow has a tough task for next year as many of the possible solutions are question marks: current starters who are free agents, a Framber who didn’t advance and a Whitley who also didn’t advance. They’ll need Lance. Thankfully, we can focus on the positives of the here and now.
Isn’t this the same guy that tweeted he’d like to play in the ASG because he was feeling good coming back from injury? In the brain trust, I trust. Not some over eager, injury prone kid.
