Key West

Wife and I are going next weekend, any food/drink suggestions?  Will be staying near Duval on the Gulf side.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Haven't been in 14 years, but I remember that Louie's Patio/Backyard was outstanding.  I'm pretty sure it's still there.  Ya' gotta do Sloppy Joe's Bar, too, for Ernest's sake.

Fish the flats, man.  Greatest all-day fishing experience I've ever had, though the windiness of the afternoon made it a little tougher--late January.  Brought in a barracuda, lost a lemon shark, spooked three permit.  The guide saw a Jack Crevalle or two when the shark went by, but I couldn't from my vantage point.  Alas, no tarpon--not their season for the flats.

Have a great time.  Look up Keith Bland, an artist down there who specialists in oil painting.  Haven't heard from him in some time, but he used to specialize in portraits.  I knew him in high school and ended up at the same college with him.   If you do, say that Memphis Bobby sent ya.  He can give you fishing tips, too.  Hell of an athlete in his day.

It occurs to me that within the fairly recent past I've read both To Have and Have Not and Ninety-Two in the Shade. If you haven't read them you might want to hold off until after you get back.

As far as nightlife goes I understand that the La Te Da Hotel has a cabaret that is popular in certain Texas political circles. Say, isn't the Michael Berry show on now? Someone could call in and see if he can offer a personal review of the place.

Apologies for the necro bump, but the lady and I are heading here in August and would appreciate and recs.

Should mention upfront that I don't fish.

Then there's nothing to do but eat and drink.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Key West is crazy brutal hot in August. Get a place with a pool and find well air-conditioned bars.

Drop by Keith Bland Oil Paintings. Knew Keith in high school. He went to Baylor with me, too. Worth a visit, since you don't fish. The one golf course in town is okay, though I haven't played it in 15 years.

Tell him MUS Bobby said hello, if he's there. He has a gallery in Manhattan, too, so he might not be around.

Well we decided to nix KW and go back to Fort Lauderdale. Cheaper flight, cheaper hotel, and nice beaches.

Well, now I can hope my older son doesn't find this place on Google any time soon. He'll bug me for months until I plan a family trip there.

There's a place here in Denton that makes a crab cake Eggs Benedict. It's one of Big Un's favorite dishes. And it's one of those places that uses all-organic ingredients and such, so all the food taste very clean and very good.
And, by the way, f*** off. --Mr. Happy, with a tip of the cap to JimR
