Astros @ Jints, 8/27

Astros down 1-0, top of the third. SF seems to have found themselves yet another damn fine pitcher, Eric Surkamp. 22-year-old lefty up from AA.

Bases loaded, one out for the Good Guys and Michaels lines out to the Panda. Paredes bounces out to SS to end the threat.

Goddammit, take a fucking pitch. This guy is in his first start, he's 22, and he had a tough inning earlier. Make him work.

You tricky Panda.

Altuve hits a slow chopper to third. Sandoval fields it but maybe doesn't think he can get Altuve, so he fake pumps the throw to first and instead turns and tags the oncoming Q to end the inning. Sneaky.

Although it's against the Astros, I'm glad to see that. It seems like there are many opportunities for third basemen to get the final out by dealing on the runner moving from second to third, but instead they throw to first. Why not just tag the guy out?

Although it's against the Astros, I'm glad to see that. It seems like there are many opportunities for third basemen to get the final out by dealing on the runner moving from second to third, but instead they throw to first. Why not just tag the guy out?

It was a big crowd pleaser, for sure.

66 degrees in SF. I need a big lottery win so I can get a Fun House in San Francisco.

A big lottery win might not be enough. You might could get a short sale condo in the Outer Sunset.

Sushi. Do I have to think of everything around here? In SF there are all sorts of good, affordable sushi places. I used to love this place on Church Street that would give you four pieces of nigiri per order. Two people could eat themselves senseless for, I don't know, $30? And the sushi was very good. Good enough to take home what I didn't eat and eat it the next day. Have you ever taken sushi to go? I doubt it.

Sadly that place burned down.

Fellow stern fan?

Yeah, but he's gone so far downhill in the last year or so it's tough for me to listen these days. It's all Robin's yak, yak, yak and I don't give a shit about Ronnie or JD or Eric the Midget, etc. Tradeo is my favorite thing going these days. No one in the Artie chair has thrown the show out of balance and Howard's mental problems are running wild. Every second I hear Robin feels like it's taking a week off of my life. She's a pompous idiot.

Why don't you do like Alkie and adorn your living room walls with 17 HDTVs so you can beam in all the eating shows and all the baseball at the same time? I'm sure you have wedding pictures and baby pictures and whatnot but slide those over to the bathrooms and put you up some TVs..

I've gone the projector route in the living room - can only watch one thing, but I can see 150 inches worth.

In the bedroom now on a relatively paltry 46" - the ripper is biding his time until I have enough of a buffer to fly through the Texans-Giants game.

If you didn't get it before you sure as hell won't now. In his day he got the best guests and he is an extraordinary interviewer. He had some terrific interviews earlier this year - Billy Joel and Lady Gaga come to mind - and he and his crew have had me crying with laughter many times over the years. There's so many priceless moments that the reruns are still spectacular programming but the current good stuff happens a lot less often.

Umm, I mean Texans-49ers - and I'm on the replay since they won't show it live in here in Satan's Butthole and even though I'm paying through the nose for Sunday Ticket, it doesn't work for preseason.

What the fuck else are you gonna do in the fall? Watch the NBA? I don't think so.

It's been years, like maybe ten since I watched more than half of an NFL game. I generally watch less than two hours total in the entire season, plus the Super Bowl. I mostly just whine about waiting for baseball to crank back up again. There are brief ports like NCAA basketball and college football, but it's just a dead time.

I haven't watched the NBA in a longer time, since Olajuwon retired and the playoff system made the regular season a sad joke.

At first I thought it really was a trip to talk about his health but after seeing Mills lay into him in the dugout I think Brocail just popped up and wandered out there. I don't have any idea how he sold it, either.

I didn't really get the discussion. If a switch had to be made, couldn't a coach who had second thoughts on a pitching change stumble out to the mound before a pitch is thrown and rectify his mistake?

I see the High Life is branching out with shorter annoying spots.

In August? That's crazy.

No, not really.  Football players are ineligible to try out right now, and it is pretty obvious if 50 or so freshman are trying out, not counting those playing football, you gotta whittle them down some time.

They're 3-9 in extra innings.

Just like every other NFL team. The total dependence on injury luck is why the NFL is so completely frustrating.

Where did you end up going JD? Headed back in two weeks, can't wait.

Well, I didn't visit any really expensive upscale places, so I don't know if it will do you much good.  Miller's Pub thrice, a couple of pizza places (Giordano's and Pizano's, didn't really like either one, which totally surprised me).  I ran 6 miles one morning down the shore of the lake past, then turned up and ran north to Navy Pier.  Was totally famished so I stopped at Harry Caray's Tavern on the pier for some hummus, which was surprisingly some of the best I have ever had.  The tomato soup was passable.

Not so much, no. It's a long list of grievances.

The co-opting of veterans came later in the game, a few iterations after the creation of the character and the spots.

No.  Not at all.  I had been told by several people that it was the best. The wait was 45 min. and the crust was hard and burnt.

It's a walk from the El, that's for sure. I'm pretty sure you could attract the attention of the driver of one or another of those yellow cars that circle about and pay him a reasonable sum to take you from the El stop to your Milwaukee Avenue destination.

Let's face it, there is no time like the present to introduce Charles to mole.

Where do you stay?

Wherever is cheap on hotwire - this trip, the Millenium Knickerbocker at the top of Michigan.

Have you tried Birreria Zaragoza? Would like to hit that sunday morning before trying to find somewhere to watch the Texans beat the Colts.

No to Birreria Zaragosa. I always find some relatively cheap place in the North Loop. I have never had trouble finding a spot in Chicago that shows all the NFL games. I watched the Bush Bowl in Chicago, now that I think about it.
