2009 SnS Opening Day/CabritoFest
« on: February 11, 2009, 11:06:54 am »
Take me out to the ball game.....

When:       April 6, 2009
Where:      MMPUS
First Pitch:    6:00 p.m.

Take me out with the crowd….

The Astros open the 2009 campaign against the Chicago Cubs on April 6.  As has been our tradition in the past, we have reserved a limited amount of mezzanine tickets (30) for the game.  Each ticket costs $20.00. There are no group discounts for Opening Day.  The Astros also require the purchase of a second game in order to reserve group tickets for Opening Day.  If you want to attend OD with SnS, you will be required to purchase BOTH tickets.  If you reserve a ticket, you will be required to PAY for the ticket, even if you do not attend the game.  If you cannot attend the second game, please attempt to sell or give the ticket to a fellow TZer.

Buy me some peanuts and CrackerJack…….

As a burnt praise offering to the BBG's for the monumentous freefall that was the Scrubs last season, a group if TZer's will be meeting at Spanish Flowers for cabrito (that's goat for all you Northern folk out there), beer and queso before the game. (time to be determined as we get closer to OD)

I don't care if I ever get back.
'Cause its root, root, root for the home team,

No Cubs fans allowed.

If they don't win, it's a shame.

Fuck the Cubs.

For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game.

I only said it once? Well, Fuck the Cubs.

Current ticket count:

JaneDoe 1
HudsonHawk 1
Zipp 1
Noe' 1
MRaup 1
JimR 1
Ty in Tampa 1
Batgirl 1

Budgirl cannot attend OD, but would like to get 2 tickets for the second game from someone(s) who won't get to use them.

Please limit your ticket request to TZer's.  We love your Auntie Mable, but want to give those here a chance for tickets first.  We may open it to family later if we do not reach our limit of 30.

I think I can swing that deal with BG.  I will take her OD ticket and swap her my second game ticket.  Deal?

I have a mini-season ticket, but I don't know if it includes OD yet.  I'm on for CabritoFest and will let you know re: ticket for the game.

Ok, that's 13 tickets.  We have to have at least 20, but not more than 30, so speak up soon if you want in.

As long as we get reminders on here I'll show up at CabritoFest and hang out, but due to me being so poor I refuse to answer my cell phone for fear that credit card companies will track me down with their black helicopters, I won't be able to go to the games.

Ok, I'd like some feedback on the second game.  Should be a weekend (for out-of-towners), not during UT football, and against a NL opponent, so, I sorta narrowed the choices down.

July 25 vs Mets
August 8 vs Milwaukee

Let me know.

I misunderstood, I thought we had to get tickets to Tuesday's game vs. the Fuckthecubs. If we get to choose I'd just as soon boo the steM as anybody.

Count me in for the game and most likely CabritoFest.  Unless there's a requisite number of posts i haven't reached yet....
And I vote for the steM game.  Otherwise I'd have to leave the delivery room in time to make the Milwaukee game.  Probably not a great idea.

How does payment work?

I am currently not set up for credit card payments, but if you will PM me your card numbers (all of them just in case the first one doesn't work), expiration dates, the 3 digit code on the back, mother's maiden name, street you grew up on, driver's license number and your checking and savings account numbers, I guess you can pledge me the money.  But you still ain't getting the tickets until I have cold hard cash in my hand.

This is a serious matter.  Every hour, over 20 people are taken in by a Nigerian scam artist.  And the vast majority of them are named ybbodeus.

If you provide me with you bank account number (inclusing route number), you phone number/address and last four digit of social secure number, I can instruct my disposed pri-minister and his chauffer to wired the money to you from bank in where the $40 is currently collecting the interest.

Got some interesting giveaways.

I wouldn't even take that one when I walked in the gate.  The cap collectibles look cool, so do some of the bobbleheads.  I would really like the gym bag and blanket.

I'm kinda surprised they are giving away a Jeff Bagwell bronze collectible this year.  Unfortunately, not a single Brad Ausmus giveaway (sorry Budgirl).

Limey--did you find out if your mini-plan included Opening Day?

I will be sending payment info out in the next couple of days by PM.

I am going to be in Houston for business on the 6th!!!!  Can I be a part of your reindeer games?  If so, that would be:

Budgirl cannot attend OD, but would like to get 2 tickets for the second game from someone(s) who won't get to use them.

Please limit your ticket request to TZer's.  We love your Auntie Mable, but want to give those here a chance for tickets first.  We may open it to family later if we do not reach our limit of 30.

Ahhhh you guys suck.  Maybe someday I'll win the lottery.  Until then I'll continue to be one jealous individual.  I haven't been to MM Park since the WS.

Some fair warning here for the group.  I am 0-18 in my lifetime seeing the Astros in person.  The ignominious string has seen me watch the good guys loose in San Francisco, LA, San Diego, DC, Baltimore, Philly, Pittsburgh and the Astrodome.  Included in this revolting, decades-long spectacle were losses by Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott, Andy Pettitte, Daryl Kile and newbies like Nieve and (sic) Williams.

There will be some firsts for me.  I've never seen Oswalt pitch in person.  I've never been to a game at MMPUS.  I've only met a couple of you in person.  So, I need some slumpbuster suggestions so that I don't fly this grunge down there and infect you all.  Keep in mind that I am (happily) married and would like to remain that way.  Fire away.

Unrelated side note:  If I fail to structure my work day down there on the 6th well enough and have to show up to the goat-pick and game in a suit, y'all (I'm workin' on my Texan) have free license to ridicule me unmercilessly the entire time.

Payment info has been sent out by PM.  If you did not receive one, please PM me and let me know.

Afternoon, all.  I'm looking for suggestions on the best place to stay Sunday night and Monday night the 5th and 6th.  My meetings are at 1301 McKinney Street which is a few blocks from MMPUS, it looks like.  I think my room rate travel cap is $220 per night.  Any recommendations for a track nearby so I can go for a run in the evening?   I don't see one at U0fH downtown and I don't know how far away the nearest high school or university that has one is.  Also, if you had one meal that you just had to have in Houston (besides the Cabrito-fest Monday evening) where would you go?  I will not, WILL NOT eat room service Sunday evening...

I work daytimes so I have been unable to accomplish anything regarding The View.  I did envision the crowd at my last speaking engagement naked though and did manage to throw up in my mouth a little mid-sentence.  A room full of aerospace and government execs is not a pretty sight when you visually unstuff those suits.  To cement the slumpbuster, I did also force myself to watch Intolerable Cruelty over the weekend with toothpicks holding my eyelids open.  My wife dared to suggest that Catherine Zeta-Jones was not quite ugly enough to accomplish the task though…

I'm looking forward to (and slightly askeered of) meeting some of you in a few weeks.

I always recommend the Hilton Americas.  It has a lot of rooms and is thus generally available, especially for under $200 a night.  It's a couple blocks away from MMPUS and from the Chevron Fulbright Tower.

Don't know of any tracks (though Robertson stadium isn't far by car).  For the "one meal in Houston" you can never go wrong with Ninfa's on Navigation.

Magnolia Hotel, The Inn at the Ballpark, Hilton Americas and Hotel Icon are the closest to the ball park. There is also the Hyatt and the Double Tree, but those are a tad more cab-ish. Hotel Icon, Hilton Americas and Inn at the Ballpark all have very good restraunts in them. McCormick & Schmicks is pretty good as well. Depending on what time you run, the streets of downtown is probably your best option. The closest high schools are Yates and Davis, but those tracks have a minimum time per lap.

I have received money from about 9 of you, but the Astros have only sent me the OD tickets.  I just called our sales rep and she said she would send the tickets to the second game out today.  As soon and I get them, they will go out to all that have payed (and whose checks have cleared the bank).

Thanks to all of you who have been so prompt with your payment.

The Crown Plaza is downtown, and just a block from the Downtown YMCA, which has a track.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

1301 McKinney?  Thank you, Bench, for the proper designation. If you run through downtown, you can hit the trail around Buffalo Bayou, which is 5 miles and better than a high school track.  Four Seasons is closest, but Hilton Americas is close, too, and probably a better bargain.  There aren't really any tracks downtown, but the easiest running area to get to may be the track around Rice, or Memorial Park.  You could actually take the train to Rice.  Each of those is about 3 miles.  It would be easier to park at Memorial Park.

A lot of restaurants will be closed on Sunday evening.  I think The Grove, which is between the noble Fulbright Tower and the ballpark, at least if you walk in a staggering line, is the prettiest restaurant in Houston, and has the best bar.  The food's ok too.  I don't know if it's open on Sunday. The Four Season's has one of the better places in town, and isn't ever that busy.

Was planning to pay you if we met for lunch.  If not, I'll mail you a check.

Don't worry about mailing it.  I know where you live.

I'm shocked at the number of people in the "PAID" category.  I would have thought at this point that Jane would have only received maybe one or two checks along with some random coins and Honduran postage stamps.  Where's the SnS I used to know?

Well, she got Panamanian coins and some old Soviet postage stamps from me, so you can be sure that I'm trying like hell to keep up my end of the bargain.

Yeah, das, Neil has a good idea - take the train down to Hermann Park and run there. There's a pretty decent track down there and not nearly as many people running as at Memorial Park. Running in Memorial Park is a lot like joyriding on the West Loop at about 4:30 in the afternoon.

I wish we could make it this time, but our daughter is starting driver's ed that afternoon. So, for goodness sakes, stay off the roads in the Memorial area!

Perhaps we might be able to buy someone's 2nd tickets and attend those festivities.

Speaking as a resident Illuminati, the ability to "just get to look cool" is not something that I can truly say is my forte.  I will settle with "just look half-way presentable... stand up straight, don't slouch... wipe the drool off your chin".

I'm truly interested in buying an Astros jersey that says "Pudge" on the back of the shirt.  If it says "Rodriquez" I will be severly dissappointed.  I may even go Craig on that shirt just for the shear principle of the matter.  I will warn you right now, you may not want to visit The Shed if I return to my seat without a shirt.  Just saying.

I've seen 12:30 mentioned, and we also discussed 2 pm last week.    So thus the reason for the question.

And thus the reason for the vague answer.  Though I'd bet that you can get there anytime during the afternoon and consider yourself "on time."  I probably won't make it until after 3.

I'll make the executive decision for JaneDoe.  1:00 pm.  That should give people a half day to work, if they chose.  Should not make those traveling here have to leave at 7:00 am.  Plus, those that are playing tour guide will have enough time to play tour guide.

Just got off the phone with our rep.

Gates open at 4:00 p.m.

I was gonna say to meet at Spanish Flowers at 1:30, but BG said 1:00 so go with that.  I probably can't get there until 1:30, so someone needs to get a table.  For how many?  Hell if I know.  Just say 20.  There are several who cannot get off that early to go to Spanish Flowers.

I have bad news on my front. Due to an emergency, I will not be able to be in Houston for opening day. It popped up last night, and I have to travel somewhere else dab nabbit. However, my loss can be someone else's gain. I really want to see another TZer attend the game and use my two tickets. You will be my guest (that's right-no charge for the tickets), and I will pay to overnight the tickets to you! However, as far as the rest of the trip, you're on your own. But you are encouraged to buy Coach and JaneDoe  a round or two as I was planning to do. It's first claim first serve. I am so disappointed. I'll be there in spirit. See you sooner than you'd like.

The two duckets you'll get from Mr. Happy is actually just one OD ducket.  But JaneDoe has a another OD ducket you can probably swap.  So that is probably what you're dealing with in order to get two OD tickets and then she will have two extra tickets for the July game she can sell later for the second get together.

Good for you!  We all have to do our part.

At one of my customers, I park near the queue of cabs waiting for a fare.  In their down time, the drivers pull out their prayer carpets and face Mecca.  Next time I'm there, I'll make a point of making sure they are putting in a good word for Limey.  Perhaps they are already doing so.  "Praise be to Allah, and may that drunken Englishman be hitting the bars tonight.".

So, will there be name tags? Someone at the door to announce us?

"Lord and Lady Doooooooouchbag. Pudggggggge Facker."

And how do we introduce ourselves? With our stage names? Or do all the people who really count already know each other, and the joke will be on dorky ol' me as I stumble in and fail miserably at even attempting to fit in?

The cool people all know each other already.

I'll be leaving Austin perhaps on Sunday to visit family and then drive directly into work on Tuesday morning.  BTW - if you look for folks wearing SnS caps, then you'll know who is there for Cabritofest.  I'll be wearing a blue SpikesnStars cap.

Got them.  Tnks Mr Happy, you made me very ....well you know.

P.S. You should be getting a check in the mail in the next few days.

Spanish Flowers is not a bad choice as it should not be packed at that time of day.  You can even get some cabrito.  I nominate Bench to rent one of those 50 yard long Hummer limos to take us to/from the game.

The trick to parking is to find metered space on one of the side streets near the park since it's free after 5pm.  However if you are concerned about your ride and or belongings then be ready to pony up the $10-$20 for parking near the park.  Opening day might even have higher prices.  Carpooling from S.F. might be the economical route to go.

The name tag thing might not be a bad idea with this large of a group.  Even at Gleach's party, I was like "ok, so that guy over there is....?"

The parking recommendation I would make is this.  If anyone were planning to drink at a downtown establishment after the game that they park their vehicle there.  It would be cheaper, everyone would be parked in the same area.

Those that have to go home right after the game will obviously want to park closer to the park.

I'm not wearing a name tag.

I can carry three normal-sized humans in relative comfort in my snappy MartianMobile. I'll be driving direct from Austin to SF, but I'll be happy to ferry any intrepid travelers to the ballpark area. I will be spending the night and I'll be parking in the hotel garage across from the MMPUS so we shouldn't have to spend time darting around looking for spaces.

I was curious what time the group planned on leaving Spanish Flowers to get to MMP(gates open at 4 pm, so I figured a bit earlier than that).   Something came up so I won't be able to get to the restaurant until around 3 or 3:30.

I'll be there for the game regardless but I'd like to hang out at the restaurant too if possible.

I think the general consensus was that yakking was better done at the restaurant, and that BP wasn't a big enough draw to make everyone leave early.  I'm guessing we'd shovel off around 4:30ish and that would probably work well for finding downtown parking too.

In my case I have a job interview that got scheduled yesterday for 2 pm monday.  I tried to reschedule it today, but the potential employer had every slot full but 7 am Tuesday so I opted to keep the initial time.      It really depends how quick the interview goes, as I live about 30 minutes from the restaurant.

Love your spirit, but I'll be able to get to the restaurant in time and conduct the interview.

Smart plan.  Then pound some Budweiser.  Nothing says "reliable" and "responsible" to your potential future employer than taking them out with the SnS crowd.  Sure, they are a few steps above frat party behavior, but only a few.  You won't see a beer bong at Spanish Flowers and even if you smuggled one into MMPUS, you'd break the bank trying to fill it up.

Since the opinions of this esteemed group means so very much to me, I've hired Clive Owen to "be" das for the day.  Make sure you all are duely impressed.

Thank you.   I'm just hoping it ends quickly enough so I can make it to both the restaurant and game in time to meet you and everyone else.   It should but you never know.

And your dedication is to be admired.

I called to make reservations for Spanish Flowers, but for the private room they have a charge of $380 per hour after two hours (first two hours are free).  So, we will just have to show up and ask for a table and then keep adding to it as more show up.

Can't wait to see everyone there, especially those that still owe for tickets (you know who you are).

We're hoping to make Spanish Flowers, probably though not until 3:30 or 4, long enough for a beer I guess and to put names to faces.

1 - 1:30 start time, end time undetermined, but definitely not going to last more than 4:30 or so.  Parking is going to be a bear this early in and around the park because the employees in and around the area that use the parking lots don't usually abandon those spots this early.  In the normal start times, it will not be a problem.  On Opening Day, it always seems to be a wee bit of a problem.

How the hell am I ever supposed to get comfortable with a gathering time when you keep changing it around day after day? 1, 1:30, 12:30, 2?... This moving the gathering time around all the time is bullshit and it's taking away my swagger.

Hasn't changed in a while.  Those who can will start showing up at 1:00 p.m.  The rest of us will get there when we can.  Those who want to leave early for BP can. Those who don't, won't.

Can't please everyone all the time.

BTW, if any of y'all check in, if you are going to park at a bar planning on having a drink after the game, please post a note here. I need somewhere to park...

Nearly 1am now. Had a great time meeting everyone and spending time at Flying Saucer after the game. What a terrific group of folks!
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

Thanks JaneDoe for putting this together.  Had a great time meeting everybody.  It was a pleasure meeting das, too, despite his affect on the outcome of the game.  Sorry I couldn't make it to the bar after the game.

Need to add my muchas gracias to JD as well.  This was the best Opening Day I've had in a very long time.  Each one has a special memory to it, but yesterday was just a blast from the minute we got together at Spanish Flower to the time I said my goodbyes at the Saucer (what's with the Scottish Ghetto look on the waitresses?  I don't get it!)

Thank you all for a great time, next time we just have to spend more time mingling, it was my desire to sit and talk to everyone and I know that just didn't happen enough.  I spared most if not all of you my meltdown at the expense of Hunter S. Pence's critical AB though.

That's one of the drawbacks of the large group...once you get to the game, it's harder to mingle and visit with people other than the ones sitting next to you.  But Spanish Flowers and the Saucer were a good time to do so.  I hope OSF found his way out of downtown.  I'm sure he was wondering if I was leading him in a big circle on the way from SF to the FS.

I simple ran out of time.  Was having a pint with Limey discussing the world, look down at the watch and it is 1:15 on a school night.  Oh shit.  My better half understood completely when I told her I was meeting/talking to all of those weird baseball people on "that" website.

Great time, indeed.  It was such a pleasure to meet the group, share a meal and take in a game.  While it would have been preferable that the Astros won the game, I can't think of one other thing I would have change.  Props to JaneDoe for the considerable legwork organizing this thing and props to the group for coming together to fight like hell.

My better half understood completely when I told her I was meeting/talking to all of those weird baseball people on "that" website.

I went through that period too, where things were referred to as "that" website.  Brought the wife.  She's now on board.  Not so much that she's gonna start posting, but now she asks about different people and how they are doing/what they are up to.  It's funny to listen to her explaining it to her internet naive mother.  "Yeah mom, we met up with these people that we met on the internet..... (insert web dating joke). "No, really, they are just a bunch of nice people that like baseball.  Mother!!  Of course not....."

Good luck on the book deal Mr. H.  What kind of book? Sports, fiction, rocket science?

WFW. If you did not get an engagemnt letter, shame on you. When it really matters is when you should not bitch about fees.
The State Bar gives you a mechanism to protest unethical behavior. It is probably easier to complain about being "raped" and to slam all lawyers.

I hope OSF found his way out of downtown.

I did, thanks.  The surprising part was of course that I did not get lost going to the bar and park, considering you had every opportunity along the way to lose me in traffic but inexplicably (undoubtedly ignoring the pleas from other SnS'ers) chose not to do so...

Thanks again all, and especially to Jane for putting this together.  A great time indeed!

The matter is far too personal and complicated to discuss online.  My lawyers were ethical, but expensive.  They preserved my rights.  It was a nasty ordeal.  I'll take my WFW for whining and chill.

I actually do now.  I'll be in Dallas for a wedding (I've just been told).  So if you want it, it's yours.

If I could get three duckets, I'd be happy to take them off someone's hands.  Four would be even better.

I will be looking for three to four as well.  If not, I can get some in another section and sit buy your section (kinda like last time).

Hmm. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to relinquish mine. If I do I'll put it in the hands of someone who's certainly going to be there and you guys can sort it out.

You can have my two. Or maybe more fun, take on Noe in a steel cage match for them.

I'm about 90 percent sure that mine will be available... and if there's a TZer that wants it it'll make my decision that much easier.

I didn't realize in March that every weekend from Memorial Day through July 18 would be booked, so by July 25 I think a lazy weekend will be preferable to a roadie to Houston.

Happy to pay for it (face value, I'm a sucker).  Shame that a number of ODers can't make the 2nd game as I didn't make the OD-fest.

Something similar to opening day sounds good to me.   Plus, I'm hoping to try these cookies and other sweets that board members have raved about in this thread.
