OK, I'll be the one to say it.  He needs a trip down to Round Rock.  He's not in a slump, he's completely lost at the plate.  I've always thought he was vunerable to good breaking stuff, but he's flailing wildly at everything thrown up there.  He needs a serious lesson in the Ted Williams School of Swing at Pitches You Can Handle.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I'd give him 9 more games. But you're not wrong.

I certainly wouldn't have him batting leadoff.  Can someone explain why this makes sense?

There was no one else in the lineup today that made any more sense at leadoff.

Did it resemble the thumping of a bobblehead?  Sorry, poor attempt at humor.  I didn't see the game last night, but you got to feel bad for a guy that has his very own bobblehead night and the fans are talking about sending him to RR.  Before you start flaming, I do realize the object of the game is to start the nine players that give you the best chance of winning, everything else be damned.

I think giving him his very own bobblehead night is consistent with the unrealistic expectations people are putting on Pence.  He had a terrific season last year and deserves all the praise that accompanies that.  But it's unfair to expect him to duplicate it this year.  I read here and elsewhere this spring that we should just go ahead and pencil him in for hitting .320 with 30 homers.  Those are totally unrealistic expectations.  He has a long way to go yet before he is a consistent producer in the Major Leagues, let alone a HOFer.

Bourn's not exactly setting the world afire offensively either. Will we see an OF of Lee, Erstad and Cruz?

Pence has said he's a notorious slow starter, last year he hit .195 the first month in RR. Bourn is here for his D and speed, we can wait on his bat.

oh, is that what he said? he is not terrible; he's just a slow starter.

he was in RR for all of 22 games, and he was hitting slightly over .300 when they called him up after a hot road trip.

He's a big plus in CF, but I'm not ready to accord him "world class" status yet. I was merely suggesting that if he continues to not get on base, that you may see a change, especially if we are losing lots of games.

Unless you know you will have that speed and defense he'll be given opportunity.  Otherwise, you are weakening your bench, A LOT.

Plus, didn't he just tear up the Grapefruit league last year? That sure doesn't sound like a slow starter to me.

But has Bourn looked as lost and flailing as Pence? There are a lot of guys in the line-up who aren't running on all cylinders yet. If you start moving them all around, they're never going to have the chance to get to get in a groove. The only way the team should consider making a summary move is if someone is obviously clueless at the plate. It sounds like Pence has that problem right now.

They were talking about giving Pence a day off for some time. I think they decided against it to try to get his bat back. That hasn't really happened so they gave him a day off. Plus the off day should give him a bit of a rest. Though he isn't really hitting yet, 4 of his 9 hits have been for extra bases. Tied for third on the team in doubles and tied for first on the team in triples.  It is strange that he has slumped so bad so far this season, it looked like he was ready for the season when I saw him in late March at Spring Training.

No, it doesn't matter what I think or that you wouldn't bat him leadoff. Anybody can see that  he needs to start laying off the sliders out of the zone or he will be heading down to AAA.

They can't let him keep hitting .180 and 3 weeks should give him ample time to come out it.  His past performance suggests that he will come out of it, but sometimes young players need to go back to the farm to work things out.

I do agree with your point about the importance of Bourn to the offense. He was not only brought in to play stellar center field, he was also brought in to be the leadoff man. If he can't do both, the Astros are only getting half of what they bargained for.

The man plays an outstanding CF, but like you say, he also is the lead-off man.  I don't think every great defensive player should be expected to hit .300 (see Everett, Adam) because they already are providing for their team. But Mr. Bourne is in the situation where he is expected to both play a great CF and get on base for the big bats.  He isn't struggling in the same way Pence is though, so I think it'll eventually come together and the ball will start to drop for him.
