Facing the Astros, he might be feeling pretty good right now.

Just guessing. He forgot to call me this afternoon.

Haven't been able to watch in a while, so the eye is a little rusty...

Wow. Biggio was slow with the bat.

I swear the ball hit the catchers glove about mid-thigh on strike two. It popped out and fell to the ground. Biggio started swinging the bat....

Biggio Ks looking.

Pence walks/steals 2nd.

Berkman pops to LF on the 3-1 pitch.

Lee gets jambed a little, pops to LF.

Pence left, unblinking, at 2nd.

Hart looks...comfused as to why he is there.

Bloops one over SS...Adam might have made it close, even on crutches, just because he is Adam.

Single.

Wandy over his last 6+ games (including the last inning):

2-4, 5.03

And that includes that gem against SEA.

Ausmus' homer was evidently more than the HD cameras could withstand. HD picture out in Austin.

Now it's back, just in time to get a good look at Wandy's mug.

Ok, here's a funny story and I'm sure someone in here knows what I'm talking about.

Must have been about 15 years ago now and I'll botch some part of this story, but it's directionally correct, and absolutely happened.

Pre-game (halftime?) of some sporting event.  Not a major event, possibly a D1 basketball game.

Anyway, all of a sudden, screen goes black, no sound.  So everyone figures it'll come back any second, and it never does.  The rest of the game (or second half, whatever it was) goes untelevised.

Turns out, some asshole broke into the fucking studio truck while the driver was out smoking and stole it.  Took off with the van with the employees still inside it (in the back).

They caught the guy, but I think that takes some MASSIVE balls.

If you recall Michael Moore's first film Roger and Me there was an anecdote about how Nightline came to Flint to broadcast a live show on the town's many problems and just before the show was to air a laid-off GM employee jimmy-jacked the broadcast truck and drove it away. He was later apprehended.

If you recall Michael Moore's first film Roger and Me there was an anecdote about how Nightline came to Flint to broadcast a live show on the town's many problems and just before the show was to air a laid-off GM employee jimmy-jacked the broadcast truck and drove it away. He was later apprehended.

Had to watch that in 12th grade... all I really remember is some crazy redneck woman breaking rabbits' necks and stringing them up.

I do want to see Sicko, though.

They caught the guy, but I think that takes some MASSIVE balls.

i remember this, and i know it was an espn game because they used to talk about it on best of sportscenter type specials.  dont know who was playin or what sport.

Do you know, I recently had rabbit for the first time. It had been slow roasted and was extremely tender, quite reminiscent of a very slowly roasted pork shoulder, and it was served in something akin to a pipian sauce. It was awesome.

Also, I ran into Michael Moore in the Miami airport back in March. I have recently realized that he was on his way to Cuba. Dude is a fucking slob. I would be embarrassed to walk out and get the mail dressed as he was, yet here he is, wandering around the airport.

Rabbits are normally slaughtered very young, still unweaned, so it can be similar to milk fed veal.

very good stuff.

I may have never seen someone quite so desperate to swing as Mench on strike 3 there.

Wow.

Slow curve a foot outside that he had to double-clutch on just to come close while falling over the plate.

There's not much of a better feeling than not knowing if the game is in high-def, tuning in to channel 302, and finding crisp, clear, baseball.  (And the Astros aren't losing!  Bonus!)

Prince Fielder is fat.

Great hitter.

I haven't seen enough of what kind of 1st baseman he is to call it.

But he is fat.

I'd love to see him drop some of that weight. Yes, he is doing his job, but I wonder if it might cause injury problems as he gets older.

I fucking LOVE rabbit.  I was in Italy about 10 years ago looking around a menu not knowing what ANYTHING said.  I just pointed at each thing and the waitress in her broken English told me what each thing was.  When she got to "bunny", I said "I'll have that."

Please, someone, ANYONE tell me you still think we should be buyers this trade season.

2007 is over, gentlemen.  Mr. Purpura, I wish you the best of luck on your trading.  Do not stand pat.  If you do, you should start looking for work outside Houston.

Great, so they just have to play Loretta at 2b, SS, and 3b.  Simultaneously.

On the plus side, that would increase his trade value.

No. The RR bullpen is performing just like the Houston bullpen.

Eric Bruntlett.  Be still, my beating heart.

Sorry, it makes no fucking difference.

Let him play!  Let him play!

Really, it doesn't matter where they play who at the point.  Make Woody the ace.  Put Biggio at 1b.  I don't care.

I'll watch every night and hope we make some nice trades that strengthen our dogshit system and pick up some big FAs this offseason.  Even if they overpay for them again.  Hell, I don't sign the paychecks.

just had one of those increasinly common "just got back from the store-- hey, what the hell happened?!?"  moments.  in my case, astros up 4-2 when i leave, then i come back to find wandy alone at the gatorade cooler lookin depressed, then a lengthy shot of a flummoxed luke scott standing in the outfield.  then two run homer.  this team sucks.

Brilliant pitching there by White. You have a free swinger 0-2. He has just chased 2 58 foot curveballs. What's next? Throw a fastball down the middle.

Joey, I did too. I had to mute the game and send the screen to the back because I'm dealing with some customer service people to fix this fucked up voip shit I'm dealing with. I leave and it's 4-2. I come back and it's 7-4. WHAT THE FUCK.

Happily, I got to see the grand slam, so I'm regaining some sense of what's happening here.

That motherfucking owner should thank his lucky stars that the Biggio circus is about to roll into town, because otherwise MM would be as empty as the Dome. I'll be most interested to see what the crowd at Monday's game against the Phillies looks like.

Now, wait a second.  Who is saying Garner sucks?  What does he have to do with this?  I don't blame Garner in the LEAST for this mess.  Who the hell was going to pitch??  Randolph?  Ha.

And I'll grant you that sitting around and whining about "Purpura being an idiot (I know he's not actually an idiot)" does no one any good.  But when do we start doling out some credit where it's due?

What's the answer?

Walks kill.  Except Houston gets a walk to start the inning and then a homerun, followed by a single and the scoring is over.  Milwaukee gets a walk to begin their half of the inning and by the time the inning is over, 9 runs score.

How very interesting and telling about the two teams direction at this point of the season.

Not true, and you know it.  Loretta is a better 2b and a better hitter.

i personally hope loretta is the opening day 2B in 08, and I still feebly hope this team somehow has a streak left in it, but i expect him to be traded if there is a fire sale.

The reality is that Milwaukee inserts a reliever to stop the bleeding in a Houston rally (nobody out, two men on, already two runs scored).  Said reliever promptly throws a nice tailing fastball low and away that turns into a double play.  Walks the next batter to go get the pitcher and clean up the inning.

Houston inserts a reliever and he allows a homerun on the first freaking pitch and it gets worse after that.  Again, the reality is, you don't win in this league without a bullpen.  Fact!

My fear is that in a couple weeks the bullpen will sort things out and be back to being an effective unit. But because of the way this season is going, at that point the starting pitching will go south.

I agree that scapegoating and name-calling... be it at the expense of Garner, Purpura or whoever... is wrong.
But if all we can do is talk about positives... that is positives that are actually true... this site is going to have more blank pages than Scott Barzilla's little black book...

Lidge going down kicked a big hole in this one.  Qualls and Wheeler, whatever issues they have, hasnt helped.

Qualls and Wheeler are pitching like men with dead arms.  It happens at some point in the season to all relievers who take a lion share of the work.  Lidge going down screwed up this pen because the other guys look like they were not prepared to do the job necessary.  I've seen more of Randolph, Borkowski and White (not the bullpen I expected to see this season) lately than I have anyone else.

Who said anything about positives?  There are no positives at this point.  Find me a positive.  Whiny is what I'm talking about.  Listen to JD at this point.

Frankly, the starting pitching hasn't been anything to write home about either.  Sampson has pitched several bad outings lately, Oswalt has his head up his arse, Jennings is doing a good imitation of Jekyl and Hyde in performance and Wandy is Wandy.  Woody?  He's the #5 on a bad team right now which is bad for those who thought the team was going to be good.

This is kind of interesting.

Only the Cardinals score fewer runs AND give up more runs than the Astros (in the NL).

So, that should make you happy.  Fuck the Cardinals.

What is the deal with Oswalt, anyway?

Mechanics?
Some minor, nagging health problem(s)?
Has he just let this season/offense get into his head?

Those are good questions and boy do I wish I knew what the answers may be.  Oswalt's performance is this season is perhaps the most disheartening of everything that has gone wrong this season.  When you need a leader on the team is when things go south, not when they're going well.  He's not acting like a leader.

That's been a real problem recently.  He wasn't doing that early in the season.  Aside from his SEA gem, he's been losing focus quick.  Wonder what happened.

Oswalt's certainly been disappointing, but he's not been dreadful. Berkman's performance is more troubling to me: he doesn't seem to drive anything anymore (although he's been better the last couple of weeks). My hope is that this is just one of those awful years that players sometimes have. My fear is that he might be starting a Dale Murphy off-the-cliff decline.

i cannot tell from TV--maybe getting the ball up more and not throwing as many strikes. that likely is from pressing to do well and overthrowing.  he blew the PCL away.

Does anyone believe the 'long term contract letdown theory?'

Beltran proved it last year. Berkman is well on his way. Maybe a bit too comfy, or pressing?

FWIW (which is positively not much) - talking fire sale with these Astros is premature.  You don't sell just to sell.  That would be bad, IMHO.  You sell to improve and not in terms of a five year plan sort of way.  Fuck that shit.

This season reminds me waaaaaay too much of the 2000 campaign:

1. Hurt closer (Wagner 2000 - Lidge 2007)
2. Key players injured (Biggo 2000 - Everett 2007)
3. Lost key players in the offseason (Hampton/Everett 2000 - Pettitte/Clemens 2007)
4. Young player breaks out beeg tine (Hidalgo 2000 - Pence 2007)
5. Bullpen was awful, but they had a leader that was a journeyman (Slusarski 2000 - Borkowski 2007)
6. Starter who went sour quickly (Lima 2000 - Woody 2007)

In 2001, four key players returned to the Astros: Reynolds, Wagner, Biggio and Powell.  Lance Berkman emerged as key starter once and for all.  Biggio proved he wasn't done.  Wagner was smoking fastball past everyone again.  Powell was still an effective setup man, in spite of the fans.  Reynolds was serviceable again in the rotation.  And some of the young guys who played in 2000 did just as well in 2001.  It meant a co-championship for the Astros.

Fire sale now means you disrupt what could be a good team in 2008 if you just evaluate how good you can be if your replace what you *really* need to replace and stick with those guys who for some reason are underperforming right now (injury probably) but will be much better with time.

And their struggles are not just on the field.  Everytime the organization sends someone to the minors this season, they pitch a fit at any reporter who asks "how you doin?"  Up and down there is a lack of leadership.

neither one is a leader, imo. Roy is a quiet redneck who has a touch of the bighead, it seems to me. Lance is a pudgy, lazy clown, it seems to me.

No. Trade. Clause.

Neither one is going to get you much in return when they can dictate where they want to go (if they do).  Houston has to stick with them and hope for the best.

True.
But they might get awfully antsy if the team stays this bad, especially beyond this season.
Both of them, especially Oswalt, have already been hinting at that in the press...

It wasn't even that.  Scott only has one play with the bases loaded.  He throws home, low enough for the ball to be cut.  He took his eye off the ball, plain and simple.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Right, charging the ball, he knows the play, if there is any question, he hears the call.  The doubt made him look.

I was celebrating my son's birthday, and missed most of the game.  I just saw highlights and it looked like a dragonfly or something, I'll just take your word for it.

JD said it was a "freakin' pterodactyl"

Doubt or cheat.  He could have been looking up in order to see if the runner on second was trying to score or holding up.  Either way, no no.  HH has it right, no exception.

I actually think he pulled up because the groin barked at him again.  He's playing half-speed right now and it may just be that the leg problems he's had all season long just bit him at the most inapportune time.  No one wants to be called a Jake, so he's out there giving it hell... and looking like hell too.

I'll buy that. He almost over ran the liner by Hardy in the 3rd, and he still missed it.

JD's call on the replay was hillarious: "The ball looked like it was trying to hit Luke!"

For Chrissake, if Brad Ausmus gets a flippin' home run, when he don't get many, can we just kindly take the trouble to win the game?!? For Chrissake. I feel badly that Wandy got lit up, but the bullpen... I won't get started on the bullpen.

Oh, and for anybody who's wondering who the hell I am, I found the link to this place on the Crawfish Boxes site.
And, by the way, f*** off. --Mr. Happy, with a tip of the cap to JimR
Y'know, either you're a fan or you aren't. And if you aren't, get the f*** outta here, because we are and you're just in the way. --Ron Brand
