http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=405

"The Astros, who failed to sign three of their top six picks last year, spent $700,000 on supplemental third-rounder Ross Seaton on Aug. 1. A product of Second Baptist High in Houston, Seaton was one of the top high school pitchers in the draft. A commitment to Tulane clouded the righthander’s signability. Seaton also received a potential $250,000 through baseball’s college scholarship plan, which is believed to be a record amount."

Just out of curiosity anyone know want the normal circumstances are regarding college and players that sign? Don't you also only get the money if and which you go to school?

I am sure Cabrera is somewhere on this but, http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/5825459.html

"With Seaton "it's a time process," Heck said."

What exactly does this mean?

Cabrera was probably all over this one too, but interesting comments none the less, http://www.hcnonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=19765560&BRD=1574&PAG=461&dept_id=635506&rfi=6

"Seaton, who is a Tulane University signee, said he will be strictly a pitcher wherever he goes. He said he has had talks with the Astros several times since he was selected, and the sides will continue to talk.

“It’s a tough decision, but I know it will work out in the end,” Seaton said. “Everybody has been really happy for me, and my friends and family are standing behind me through thick and thin. They are hoping for the best for me.”

Pinwheel repeated his assertion that the Astros already know who they're going to pick at #10 and they're talking dollar parameters with the kid (basically, the scout is asking the kid "what is it going to take to sign you?").  He also said that 1-10 are slot money type of deals so even though the kid can ask for more, the scout can tell him what sort of money he can reasonably get going that high in the draft.

Signability is always an issue, but Pinwheel said they think they can get this done.

All that I could think is that Shooter Hunt has to be who they're talking to with right now.

I'm hearing Hunt's stock is falling quick as he seems to be fading down the stretch.  I've got some feelers out on Crow and others.  We'll see if anyone wants to talk.

Based on both of these comments from earlier I assume we could be looking at a Tim Melville or a Christian Friedrich.

Both appear to be solid pitchers that will be available @ 10 and should not have signability issues if either went @ 10. I also read elsewhere about Hunt's stock falling like Jacksonian mentioned.

Yep.  Trouble is this draft isn't overly deep in catchers.  There will probably be 3 maybe 4 taken in round 1.  After that just a sprinkling between supp 1 and round 4 or 5.  However, there's an Ivy Leaguer (Yale) that could go in round 5 or 6.

BA only shows 14 catchers in the top 200 of this years draft. I would have to agree that this draft does not appear very deep for catchers. I assume that some of these guys will not stay at catcher as well.

My mistake. I got my info from here http://www.mymlbdraft.com/MLB-Draft-Order/2008/.

Having said that, there was one kid last year (the third baseman from Ohio?) who told the scout one thing, then after the Astros drafted him, he asked for double the amount they had ready to give him.  The rumor is that the scout who urged them to draft the LSU football player did not do his homework when it came to money wanted.  He basically told the Astros they could sign him for X and they were shocked when he asked for much more than that.

Absolutely. I totally agree and put no blame on the Astros for what happened. I remember reading posts on this board regarding the situation last year.

I guess I was more asking about previous Astros draft history. Since we have 5 picks in the top 100 do you thing we can sign all of them this year.

I was also wondering the type of the player the Astros would be willing to draft based on these 5 picks. Will we skip on certain guys just because of their price tag.

Based on Pinwheel's comments it appears that we are not going to wait until the draft to see if anyone falls to us at #10. In everyones opinion is this a good thing or a bad thing?

With Picks #10,#38,#52,#83, & #105 what are our chances of signing all 5 of these picks? I am not as familiar with other Astros drafts other than last years where we did not sign a player until the 5th round.

Does anyone think we will go conservative on players just to get them signed or will we go after the best player regardless of the price tag or agent involved?

Thoughts on the local Cypress kid Grossman @ #52???

UT's Jordan Danks @ #83???

I notice that Brian Pellegrini has joined the Legend and started in LF last night.  He spent a little time at Tri City last year, mostly at 1B.  I was a little surprised that he would be next in line.

I didn't see any other roster move, but I expect Duman or someone will inform us when that is public.

Did he ever make it back last year since the attached posts, http://www.spikesnstars.com/forums/index.php?topic=103038.0, or was this his first game back?

If so not a bad first game back. Thanks for any info regarding this subject.

I don't pay for their content so I don't know what he said.

To me he just came across like he had something out for the Stros. Basically just said that he had to put a list together, but did not really give any credit to any of the 10 listed. He said 11-15 could be interchangeable with the bottom end of the top 10 to some degree. He said the Astros would probally rank dead last when they rank the teams.

Paying $100 for a $20 pair of jeans isn't good negotiating, even if they were being sold for $200.

depends on if you want to walk around with your pants off or not.

you can bitch about paying too much for gas all you want, are you going to just sit around your house all day and not go anywhere. Or are you going to suck it up, fill your tank up with overpriced gas, and get on with things.

As regards Dietrich and Eibner, I've just gotten another source (outside the Astros) to confirm they were demanding first and second round money respectively.  His conclusion:  same as everyone else.  They were poorly advised and will probably regret it.  They were the unreasonable negotiators.

Thanks,

I was curious as to the specifics

In these two particular players' cases the reported 1st and 2nd round money was unjustified.  I suspect Purp actually offered top of their respective round money rather than the specific slot money mlb suggested.  Not a single team thought Dietrich or Eibner were worth taking in the first and second round despite neither being signability risks going into the draft.  As a business man you're not going to pay a potential employee 2 or 3 times what you think he's worth just to have him on board.  With Jones however, if his real asking price was equivalent to end of the first round or supplemental first round money then the Astros should have bit, IMO.  He definitely slid on signability from about that range.

This is more in line with what I meant. It is not so much about Eibner or Dietrich or round 1, 2, 3, 4.

Maybe we should have went after Jones more.

Maybe we should have went after another signability risk since we did not have a 1 or a 2.

Maybe we need to learn to negotiate better.

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Re: 2007 Draft Thread
« on: August 16, 2007, 01:32:15 pm »
There is much more to a draft than signing or not signing players.  In 2002, we signed 21 of the top 23 picks and we re drafted one of those we missed the 2 years later (he fell 32 rounds by the way and lasted one year of rookie ball before being released).   So by your business plan, that is a successful draft.

5 years is when you evaluate drafts.  I know there are plans for a thorough analysis of this draft in the off season but so far, only one player signed in this draft is in the bigs. Mark McClamore.  One pick was traded away in the Jennings deal (Talbot).  Of the other 20 signed, only Shortell (A+), McClemore (HOU), Douglass (AAA), Mackor (AA), Gothreaux (AAA).  Further down the list you find a DFE who later signed Ryan McKeller who is still in the org at Salem.  That is it.  Only 6 players are still in the org 5 years later.  Only one has made it to the show.  Does that look like success?  They signed em?

Your breaking up my post into pieces instead of reading it as one.

I get the whole Carlos Lee thing. I am thankful that we signed him.

However, there were 154 players selected in the first 4 rounds. Of those 154 players, 144 of them signed. With 94% of all players in the first four rounds signing, why do we not have anything to show for it? 94 freaking percent!!!!!!

Only 10 players did not sign and two of them were ours. Like I stated in my posts last night, there are many on here that know way more about baseball than I. I can admit that. However I am a businessman and I no how to analyze business decisions with the best of them. This is unacceptable period. You can not spin this like some liberal CNN whack job. This is not good. It's not the end of the world, but not good.

It was stated many times before the draft by Pupura that we would be able to take some risks early on because of the money we would gain by not getting a 1 or a 2. If all we offered was slot, then I am disappointed. There are multiple examples given in my posts last night of players drafted in rounds 4 and up who got way above slot.

It amazes me that there are such knowledgeable members on this board, who day in and day out provide so much insight and valuable information about the Astros and their farm system. However, when somebody says anything negative about the Astros management or one of its players in the organization, that poster is attacked like he is some kind of idiot.

90% of the players selected in the first five rounds have now signed.

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Re: 2007 Draft Thread
« on: August 15, 2007, 07:53:55 pm »
I was just glancing over at BA and it looks like a bunch of guys are signing for way over slot. For instance Bradley Suttle (longhorn) was picked in the fourth round signed with a 1.3 million dollar bonus. Taylor Grote (longhorn commit) who was selected in the 8th round signed with a 250,000 bonus.

In contrast I heard Purpura say something along the lines of "the offers on the table were with in slot." I would be curious to know where we actually we are with Dietrich & Eibner. I guess the truth never really comes out in these situations. They could be asking for 2 or 3 million I guess?

I also saw on BA, that out of all the draft picks in the first five rounds that only 23 players have yet to come to terms. Considering we only had three picks in the first five rounds in the first place, I will be somewhat disappointed if we are not able to come to terms with Dietrich & Eibner.

So that means that 87% of the players selected in the first five rounds have signed so far and we only have one player so far to show for it. Mose people on this board have forgot more about baseball than I will ever know, but this just seems like a tough pill to swallow considering we only had three picks in the first place.

There are three hours left, so hopefully they can get something worked out.

Ok so there is basically an hour left and three more players in the first five rounds have signed bumping up the percentage of players signed to 89% with just a handful of guys left on the fence. Dietrich and Eibner being 2 of them.

Pence was going to get brought up to the Astros sometime this season as long as he played well at Round Rock.  The chances of Burke, Lane and Scott all hitting well this season were close to zero.

I used to think the Astros were overly careful with developing prospects, but I've changed my mind.  The reason that perception exists is because lately there haven't been very many prospects who were good enough to advance quickly.  Think back over the last few years, the good ones made it quickly.  This season, the Hooks roster looks a lot different than it did at the beginning of the season because several guys who were playing well at Salem have been promoted.  Iorg would probably also be in Corpus already also if he hadn't been injured.  We're seeing right now why Ensberg, Lane, Scott and Burke were called up relatively late.

Now this makes sense. I totally buy what you are saying.

The Bus Ride Discussion Forum / Re: 2008 Hooks
« on: July 16, 2007, 08:39:46 pm »
No he didn't.  He didn't dominate AA.  He was wildly inconsistent in the first half and a .280 hitter in the second half.  Nothing he did last year portended his very successful 2007.

There's much more wrong with your assertions.

Who should have been brought up faster?  And, to replace what player?

I read and hear a lot of people say the Astros don't move players up fast enough.  The reality is those guys who beat the "usual" developmental curve are rare.  There's also something to this that the Astros haven't often drafted in the top 10.  The top 10 or so each year are your best bet to beat the developmental curve.

Although his .283 avg last year was not record breaking, I do not believe his avg. tells the whole story. As an earlier poster accused me of just looking at the stats and not actually having any direct observation. I did attend multiple Hooks games last year and can attest to the fact that several balls were hit very hard, but just did not find the holes and gaps needed to have an avg. above .300.

I do think avg. is a bit over hyped and would much rather look at his OPS which was .890. He had 28 long balls on the year as well. I will take those numbers any day of the week.

You are correct that he was inconsistent at times and a bit streaky. But then again this is baseball and who doesn't go through peaks and valleys at times.

Also you have to take a look at the Arizona Fall League that Pence participated in last year before being removed from the team because of an unfortunate incident everyone would like to forget ever happened. He hit .337 with an OPS of .943. That is some serious hitting.

You do make a very valid point when you say "who should have been brought up faster". There really wasn't anyone. Which kind of blows my whole theory out of the water.

I do think when it is all said and done that the Astros are probably somewhere between both of us. You have to admit that you would not mind a few more mid season promotions for players who are having good years.

Read more.  Post less.  Pay attention and you might learn some things.  One of the things you may learn (especially on the main talk zone board which gets more action) is that the term "credible publication" is very nearly an oxymoron.  Here you will find that much (or even most) of the opinion is based on direct and knowledgeable observation ... not the stats pages.  You will also find a low tolerance for self-appointed experts who criticize the professionals without having established their own credibility.

If you have nothing left to learn feel free to forward your resume to the Astros.

Well put and point taken.

By no means at all am I an expert, Nor did I ever claim to be. So maybe my opinions (also shared by others) are off base. I can live with that. Just a big fan here that enjoys reading this board.

I am sure that the Astros would move said player faster if it dictated it by his play.  Look at how fast Roy moved through the system.  Or Biggio.  Or even Pence.  The real issue is that unfortunately the Astros prospects have fallen flat more often then they have exceeded expectation.

ETA: Moving someone through the system faster does NOT mean they develop faster.
Pence is 24 years old. If Burke would not have played so terrible the first month this year, Pence would still be in AAA, turning 25 in April, and never having a taste of the big leagues as of yet. That makes me want to puke. Pence has been dominating everyone ever since high school and took way to long to be brought up. Thank God that Burke stumbled, and he got his chance. He is a great player.

No offense to you Mr. Froback Sir, but you are probably of an older generation and would like to see things done the way they have always been done. I just disagree. I am not alone either when I say that. Almost every credible publication / media has criticized the Astros for the same thing I am pointing out.

Have no problem with your rotation except Paulino will be at AAA more than likely.  You have 2 guys on your team who have not mastered Low A ball much less caught a whiff of High A ball (Clemens & Van Ostrand) and one who has had success at High A for a very short period of time and keeps being sent back down (Torres).

There are several guys I would move up ahead of them Sutil, and Johnson (depending on his second half)  off the top of my head.

This is one of my biggest beefs with the Astros. I do not understand this "play every single league before he can ever be brought up to the big leauges" mentality.

A typical college senior is 22 years old after 4 years of school. So say this player gets drafted after his senior year by the Astros. Lets say he starts at Tri-City and plays every level of the minors on the way to the big leauges. His age would follow a similar pattern;

Tri-City - 22/23
Lexington - 23/24
Salem - 24/25
Corpus - 25/26
Round Rock - 26/27

Even if he goes from Tri-City to Salem he is still 25/26 years old before he ever even has a chance to get brought up. I just don't agree. There are several players around the Majors that fly through the minor leagues. I would like to see the Astros push a few guys up faster.

Yeah Paulino is pretty much a lock for AAA. Towles also has a chance at AAA next year. This was more just for fun to throw a hypothetical young team together according to the rules stated in the first post. I realize it is not realistic. I suppose the title is misleading.

Alright the Astros are terrible, Football is not here yet, and it is a slow day at work.

So lets say you are the man in charge of player development for the Astros and the task at hand is to come up with the starting line up for the Corpus Christi Hooks in 2008.

Here are the rules (Just for fun. Like I said I'm bored.)

1.) You have to pick a starter for each position, your starting rotation, your closer, and a DH/1st guy of the bench.

2.) You can not put any player on the team that has played for the Hooks for 2 years are more.

3.) You can not select anyone for that this team that is older than 25 years old. (Astros miraculously decide to get younger and push guys up through the system faster :) )

Usually it means injured but I have no concrete knowledge of that in his case.  The astros don't release alot of that info.  For example, David Dinelli is in Greeneville and injured but is not even on the roster.  I get most of that info from local papers.

Thanks for the info.

Shouldn't he be getting more AB's than that then? Or is that typical for someone like him to just not get any PT for that long of a stretch?

Does anyone know why he has not played since June 25th? Is he injured?

He only has 14 AB's in 5 games. Out of the position players that have signed in this draft, he would be fourth behind DeLome, Dixon, & Cusick.

More disappointing than unexpected.  Pressure's on now to get Dietrich and Eibner.

I agree 100%. Mostly just flat out disappointing, especially when considering we had no draft picks in the first and second round.
