Title: Football this weekend (Sept 18-19)
Post by: Lurch on September 17, 2010, 02:19:52 pm
The real kind, Limey (USA! USA! USA!)

Man, I'm pumped about this weekend.  Texas at Texas Tech and Texans at Redskins cant get here fast enough

UT @ Tech shouldn't disappoint.  Neither of these teams are as good as 2008, both have a lot to prove and I'd be surprised to see either come out flat.  Over-amped maybe and I'd be shocked if inconsistency isn't the norm.  I'm also not a huge fan of the early matchup, even though it probably favors Tech.

Texans @ Redskins - home office is in VA and I just happen to be going next week.  I'd like to be able to razz them a bit but I'll have to be gentle, most are VT alums and may not have much spirit left.  I'm also looking forward to catching the Astros @ Nats if I can get loose from work in time.

My favorite comment on VT:

I am so psyched for Sunday that I can barely contain myself. And by contain myself I am referring to the full growler of Prost Pilsner from NXNW brewpub, which I just cracked open with Friday evening merriment. I raise a glass to the Texans and the football gods, real and fantasy, hoping the Texans can come out of this weekend with an intact record and good health. The last time they started off 2-0 something very bad happened to the knee of a certain player, allowing Andre Davis to become the team's go-to deep threat for much of that season. Let's win, but not have another incident plz. Thank you FB Gods.

GO TEXANS!!

Come Sunday I would love to see BUWebguy get to raz Astrofrog.  And, you Texans fans will get to see a little more diverse offense this week.  Don't expect them to run on the Skins like they did the Colts (not even close), but figure they will have a good day in the passing game.

If you can maintain the buzz long enough, the Cougars - UCLA game is at 9:30.  UCLA comes to Austin next week for the Horns "signature" out of conference game.  The two games should tell us who is better between UT and UH as long as you take into account the road/home difference and the fact that they are two completely separate events.  THIS IS HOW WE ANALYZE COLLEGE FOOTBALL!

As long as it's nothing like the last time UCLA came to Austin I'll be fine and severely less sunburned no matter the result

I have no idea either. The odds makers think that it is no contest. Griffin is always fun to watch play.

Sure, why not.  I thought TCU did not look very good against a very mediocre OreSt team.  When you have that much speed and athleticism at the QB position you can always make things interesting.

The score was a very pretty throw on the run. Perfectly accurate. Just wait until GD realizes he's been rolling him out to the right and corrects that oversight.

The first drive confused me.   Pass, Pass, Run, Punt is not the same as Run, Run, Pass, Punt even though it has the same net result.

Tech doesn't look as fast as us.   Did they lose a lot of players on D and not reload?   Not that D was their thing.

These first three games I've seen some very impressive size. I don't have a good sense of their respective speeds but in terms of pure bulk I'd say that Tech and Rice are very, very evenly matched with respect to their sideline dance teams.

Here's what scares me, and I admit my opinion means nothing; Gilbert looks like Chris Simms II to me.   He's not particularly accurate, his arm isn't that strong, and he likes to pretend he's 5'8.

See, and I'm totally willing to admit I just don't know enough about the subject to know what I'm looking at, I don't see "cannon."   A majority of his passes are wobbly, inaccurate snorts.

But not for college?

I just remember having many discussions during the WYO and RICE games with the other people watching that a lot of the "great passes" were actually "great catches" by the receiving core coming back to catch balls behind them or over them.

I don't have any sort of Gilbert fixation and haven't seen enough of him to know whether I like him or not but it's always possible that the QB is putting the ball exactly where it needs to be and the receiver ran a bad route.

Chykie Brown is terrible.

There is no spinning this game.   All you had to do is not self destruct(3 tipped picks) in the red zone and there would be a comfortable lead.    The defense is playing great.

I've noticed that the WRs are by and large terrible blockers. I've also noticed that the Horns like to pull an OT and that OT almost never does anything, getting to the play far too late to have any impact. They'd be better off sending that tackle into the backfield and having him put a helmet on a linebacker.

Tre Newton now in the locker room.

Great?

It's not perfect by any means, but I don't see how you can say otherwise.  7 of Tech's points belong to a turnover by the offense.

For the game,  Tech has 138 yards of offense, and the offense keeps trying to give the game away.    They have allowed Tech to move the ball twice all night:  on the score that tied the game at 14, and the drive where Curtis Brown should have had a pick 6 instead of a pick 3.   Considering the state of the offense at the moment, I'd say they have held up their end of the bargain.    If the D wasn't playing great, the team would be down double digits in Lubbock.

If the offense could get out of it's own way and leave this game up to the defense, the game be comfortably in Texas' favor right now.

I think Cooley is a bit past decent, as is Sellers out of the backfiled, and Portis is a very good back when healthy.  Washington is a well coached team with some good players, not like y'all are playing a patsy.

Pretty bad?  There are multiple receivers open without a Texan within 20 yards.  On Every.  Single.  Play.  It's like they're playing with only 8 guys.

Peyton threw for over 400 yards. And all the corners are either rookies or second year players. So I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised when the secondary shows itself to be terrible. The Texans need to generate some serious pass rush to keep the secondary from getting torched every week.

I'll tell you guys something. I have no problem at all not attempting that 52 yard field goal. I probably would have gone for it on fourth down but I wasn't upset at the punt. I was outraged, though, that Turk punted the ball into the fucking end zone. That is simply unconscionable from that short distance. You have twenty yards of sideline to work with. Two of them, in fact. Fuck me, that pisses me off.

I don't blame the players too much.  They are what they are...young and inexperienced.  But they're getting abused by everyone, including Arena League refugees.  The coaches have *got* to figure out something to help them.  I don't know what the "fix" is, but someone on that staff had better figure out something.

The fix is pressure.  Manning and McNabb are no Arena refugees, but they fall under pressure just like the rest of e'm.

Pressure will improve when Cushing returns.

I hate to bitch after a nice win....but I know what your are thinking as am I.  I have been giving Kubs the benefit of the doubt, but his play calling (or his offensive coordinators play calling) Leaves much to be desired.  That 53 yrd field goal  (or horrible punt) in OT should have been from much closer.  Mix in a freaking run when the opponent thinks you are passing.  Another thing, does our defense coordinator not understand that a well timed blitz would help the secondary.  Conservative football drives me to drink.

And one other thing, I was so mad about not trying to kick that fieldgoal that I was almost kicked my dog.  Then that horendous (sp) punt.  If you don't thing your kicker can make it, then have your punter (turk sucks) punt it out of bounds or go for it.  It worked out, but..well I cant believe it did.  These decisions will come back and bit this team.  Okay I am done.

Schaub was playing from behind, the same as Manning in week 1, so he had to throw alot of passes.  And don't think the Skins are something great.  They've played two games so far and tried to give them both away.  The Texans were willing to take it.

Dallas shut Dallas down last week.  The 'Skins gave up almost 400 yards in last weeks win.  Dallas will move the ball against the Texans and the Texans will move the ball against the Cowboys - and both coaches will try their damdest to give the game away. I think Dallas has a better chance of winning this game standing at 0-2 (I actually had this one as an L when the schedule came out, but I also had them 2-0 at this point).

Dallas will have trouble with the pass rush as their O line is bad.  It is very hard to run on the Texans dfense, so that is out.  Your QB sucks.  Not saying that the Texans will win, but they should.

this will cause me to end up in jail, as I will have been accessory to murder.  Jason Garrett sucks at play calling.  He's worse than Kubiak.

Schaub was playing from behind, the same as Manning in week 1, so he had to throw alot of passes.  And don't think the Skins are something great.  They've played two games so far and tried to give them both away.  The Texans were willing to take it.

I want to see the Texans next game against Indy.  Peyton took his brother out to the shed last night and beat the shit out of him.

Texans (like the Titans, Jags, Patriots, Chargers, etc.) are obviously far better prepared for what the Colts offer than the Giants and many other teams that will play them this year.  On the broadcast last night, the announcers kept talking about how The Colts were so well prepared for the Giants trying to run over them like the Texans did, but it wasn't as simple as the Texans just "running over" the Colts.  The Texans zone blocking scheme is perfectly suited to catching The Colts aggressive d-line off-balance, Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter are often called in to block like tight ends on running plays which creates extra cut-back lanes, and our backs make their breaks and hit the hole fast which neutralizes the colts' read and react linebackers.  On defense, Texans know to be patient and not allow Peyton quick scores even if it means giving up easy yards underneath.  I don't think the Texans will beat the Colts in Indy, but they'll definitely be a lot more competitive.

Dallas will have trouble with the pass rush as their O line is bad.  It is very hard to run on the Texans dfense, so that is out.  Your QB sucks.  Not saying that the Texans will win, but they should.

#1 O-line will be complete for the second time this season.
#2 the Dallas D has only allowed 127 yards rushing for the season.
#3 sporadic doesn't like me to comment on Romo
#4 DeMarcus Ware is a beast.  And Spears on the other side is no slouch.
#5 As long as Mike Jenkins in the secondary is okay, I'll take my secondary over yours.
#6 coaches for both teams suck.
#7 Dallas may or may not have a good kicker.

What team does good play-calling?  Peyton Manning?  It seems a common complaint these days, but are the Texans/Cowboys/UT especially bad compared to others?

The Titans are very good at play calling, until Jeff Fisher remembers that he hates Vince Young.

Yeah, he beat them and he was getting pounded in the first half.  Mind you Ware was on the sideline for one of the TDs.  I am unsure why.  I admit the Cowboys have some problems (ha, more like a lot) but they aren't complete disasters.  Romo's 2 INTs did help with field position for Cutler also.

I think Dallas has a better chance of winning this game standing at 0-2 (I actually had this one as an L when the schedule came out, but I also had them 2-0 at this point).

Out of curiosity, what have you seen from the Cowboys so far that makes you think 0-2 is where they need to be in order to beat the 2-0 Texans?

Still can't believe Kubiak didn't kick that field goal.  Still can't believe the Texans won.

I can. In fact, I said "punt it, please!" when that 3rd down bootleg play fell incomplete because there's no fucking way Neil Rackers makes a 53yd FG on the road to win a game for the Texans. You'd think most, if not all, Texans fans remember all the negative results in OT and would be likewise pessimistic about the chance that kicks goes through and the team walks off the field winners. Instead everyone's bashing Kubiak for a smart, conservative decision that gave his team the best chance to win. I thought it was the right call then and I still do now. It would've been even better if Turk hadn't shat himself on the punt.

because they may get their heads out of their asses and play with a little desperation.  Dallas gets complacent when they are playing well (and it seems they are complacent playing poorly now, as well).  They played two absolutely wretched games, and still had chances to win both of them.  If they play a clean game, I think they win this week.  Their D matches up well with pass happy teams.  They had a field day last year with Philly (X3) and NO.  I like their chances if they can keep Foster & Slaton in check.

And, BG, I think Romo gets way too much praise and grief.  Both picks yesterday were off tipped passes (one was a very good pass, the other questionable, but should not have resulted in an INT)

See that's the thing I don't get.... how could any Texans fan remotely believe Rackers would've made that kick? I am an unabashed homer who generally thinks positively about my sports teams, but even I couldn't let myself believe that I'd see Rackers hit a kick from that distance when I've been kicked in the gut repeatedly by Kris Brown. So, you're left with three realistic choices--1) punt and try to pin them back; 2) fake the FG; 3) go for it on fourth down.

A fake FG would've been almost unthinkably suicidal at that point. I can only imagine how badly that could've turned out (see e.g., RB Chris Brown's terrible pass attempt vs. JAC last season). Going for it on fourth down was a consideration, but the Redskins had that 3rd down play sniffed out pretty well. The safe call was the punt. Extend the game and let your defense try to make a play.

I'm no expert, but I think punting in that situation in a game that is decided by sudden death rules isn't the right call.  Kick the FG or line-up in the normal offense and go for it.

I would certainly not be making such a decision based off of Texans' history kicking or in OT.  That's closer to making a decision based on superstition rather than facts.   Might as well be questioning what underwear you're wearing.  It's the 2nd game of THIS season with THIS year's team and this year's kicker.  Also, if you don't have confidence in your kicker to make a road game winning 53 yard field goal in the NFL, you have the wrong guy.

I have to believe he made the call because of confidence in his D to improve his odds.  I disagreed with it then, and do now, but to be fair, he did get unlucky with that stupid fucking spearing call.  Otherwise, it likely would have been a punt to turn the ball back over to the Texans rather than a missed field goal.

I was already pissed by the conservative play call to end regulation.  I..like most fans, am emotionally charged while the game is going on.  In retrospect, I think he made the right call.  Turk needs to aim for the sidelines, Just like Slaton needs to learn how to return kicks (one yard line...pffffttt).

Well, the whole sudden death thing also means you try not to make dumb decisions that could give Donovan McNabb a 25yd field with which to win the game. Two of those choices would've been needlessly risky and dumb. The safe play was the one Kubiak called. If you don't have a kicker that can hit from that distance into the wind, punt the fucking football.

Rackers was brought in for his accuracy inside the 45 yard line.  Brown had a better leg, but lost his confidence.  I am sure the Texans will continue to look for the perfect kicker in the off season.

Absolutely yes. I only mentioned the past because it informs how us fans view the present. If you've seen the script unfolding before you, it's generally hard to believe the result will be any different, which is why I'm surprised so many thought in the moment that it was a crazy decision to punt.

Also, if you don't have confidence in your kicker to make a road game winning 53 yard field goal in the NFL, you have the wrong guy.

Then we have the wrong kicker for you. If you've paid attention to Rackers throughout his career, it's well known that he's not a distance kicker. He's an accurate kicker with limited range. It was a trade off the organization was willing to make because the chances are better that he will be mostly kicking from inside 45 yds than outside 50. That's why they gave him the job over Kris Brown.

As for the 50+ yard accuracy leading to the call, I stand corrected.  That makes sense if the Texans knew they were bringing on a kicker with no expectations for him from that distance.

Bullfuckingshit. Who won the game?

The right call is the one that takes all the relevant facts into account and balances the risks and rewards. You don't kick a 53 yd FG attempt into the wind with a kicker who can barely clear 50 on a good day. That does not give your team the best chance to win.

The thing that really bugs the hell out of me with Kubiak is his conservative play calling, (both offensively and defensively) if he is making the calls.  Why at the end of regulation are you letting the clock tick off and jogging to the line.  Win the fucking game.

Really? Do you not understand he was kicking into the wind? Did you not see his 52 yd FG inside the Superdome barely clear the crossbar by a matter of inches? Did you not see him already miss a long FG earlier in the game?

1.  There was little or no wind.
2.  Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
3.  The miss earlier in the game was not short of the goal posts.

But you can't look at the result and say it was a bad call.

I'm not looking at the result.  I'm saying that missing the kick is an easily foreseeable result, and that you must make your decision with that in mind.

2009: No 50+ attemps
2008: 1 of 2
2007: 3 of 9
2006: 1 of 7

It is just slightly possible that Kubiak knows his kicker better than you do.

It's slightly possible that Kubiak knows anything.  But I wouldn't bet on it.  And I didn't say it was a chip shot.

Kubiak could come up with a plan to eliminate the federal deficit in 2 years that made 99% of Americans blissfully happy, and you would say he's a fucking moron because he wouldn't get it done in a year.

from chron.com (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/7208763.html)

Quote
Kubiak surely understood that his sending out punter Matt Turk instead of Rackers might be misinterpreted, but head coaches are paid a lot of money to make those kind of decisions. Kubiak said he went "with my gut," and he wound up looking like a genius.

"There was a little breeze coming that way (into Rackers' face)," Kubiak said. "If you miss that (from the Redskins' 34), they've got to go 20 yards to beat us. I felt good about our defense. I thought they'd made a few nice stops in the quarter. It's one of those things that just worked out. If it doesn't work out, it's not good, but it worked out.

"(Rackers) said, 'Coach, I'm OK. I'm good. But there was obviously a breeze coming from that end because all the kickoffs coming from the other way were so much longer. He told me after the game, 'You know I would have made that.' I said, 'Well, now you tell me.' "

Turk's punt landed in the end zone despite the Texans drawing a deliberate delay-of-game penalty to move him five yards further back, so the Redskins took over at the 20, just 14 yards from where they would have been had Kubiak let Rackers kick. Turk was mad at himself for not burying Washington, but he praised Kubiak's thought process.

"That was just the call made by the head coach, and it ended up being a great call," he said. "It was borderline, right at the cutoff distance (for a field goal). We were going into a little breeze, and if you don't hit it perfectly clean, the ball doesn't go anywhere. I'm not happy with the punt, but I'm happy with the end result."

Right.  My gripe with Kubiak is that this is his first season, and he hasn't won a Super Bowl yet.  Way to pay attention.

Absolutely yes. I only mentioned the past because it informs how us fans view the present. If you've seen the script unfolding before you, it's generally hard to believe the result will be any different, which is why I'm surprised so many thought in the moment that it was a crazy decision to punt.

You say this and yet you are trying to win an argument with HH.

It's greater than slightly possible that you know very little, as evidenced by your repeatedly wrong assessment of Matt Schaub and David Carr. Now it's Kubiak's turn to prove your stubborn old ass wrong again.

No, you didn't say it was a  chip shot, you said it was a 50 yd FG. It was actually three yards longer, which is considerable at that distance.

I thought we were talking about a logical coaching decision, not a fan's batshit crazy irrational emotional bias.  My bad.

As for the 50+ yard accuracy leading to the call, I stand corrected.  That makes sense if the Texans knew they were bringing on a kicker with no expectations for him from that distance.

The Texans knew that about Rackers, as did this "batshit crazy" fan who's had him on his fantasy team in previous years. Maybe that's why I was the only one in the bar who knew punting was the correct call to make.

Correct.  How well did the decision to kick work for him?  As in, what happens to your team if you miss?  Is it more likely than not that you will make the 50+ yard field goal?  Is the likelihood that your defense can get the ball back on a full field more or less than the likelihood that your kicker can make a field goal of that distance?

Kubiak knows that his kicker is poor from over 50 yards.  He knows (as he stated) that a miss from 54 gives the Redskins a very, very short field.  (Note that the Skins would have had a 40-yarder for the win if Rackers had missed, instead of the punt).

As I've already stated, I was referring to the fan response in the moment that decision was made. How could any Texans fan remotely bring themselves to believe a Texans kicker would line up a hit that kick in that situation? Texans fans are a horribly pessimistic lot, yet everyone got wildly positive real quick expecting a miracle kick that a guy like Rackers was not at all likely to make?

Fan emotion aside, Kubiak knew his kicker's history, as did I. You clearly don't.

1.  I don't believe the chance was less than 25%
2.  The punt gained them a whopping 15 yards.  If you believe that strongly in your defense, an extra 15 yards is meaningless.
3.  That very well could have been your only chance to win the game.  In fact, if the Redskins don't miss that second attempt, it was.  You don't pass up a perfectly good chance to win that game.

The result demonstrates the possibility that Kubiak was dealing with in his decision making process.  You're either unwilling, or unable, to process the possibility that a kicker who has missed 15 of his last 20 kicks from 50+ yards would miss again.

If you're not trying to score with three seconds left, what's the point? To draw a penalty? Sure, you can throw it up there praying for a PI call or whatnot, but you're also exposing your QB to unnecessary risk, and you're still opening yourself to the possibility of a turnover returned for a TD. BTW, where was this swashbuckling HH during last year's Jacksonville game?

You're on the road and you've battled back from a 27-10 deficit. You can afford to play it safe and win it in OT.

Yeah, but that was because 1) Turk fucked up the punt, and 2) whoever it was got the idiotic spearing penalty on a sack that would have otherwise really fucked Washington. The fact that those two things happened doesn't mean that the decision to punt was clearly moronic.

I am not talking about the 3 second punt play.  I am talking about the series of play calling that led up to the three second punt play.  The punt was the right call, though I would have snapped it to my qb and had him take a knee, as the skins had no more timeouts.

Adibi was getting burned on a regular basis.  This should improve when Cush gets back.

Yes.  Coaching at any level is not easy.  I question Kubiak and his play calling, but I am a fan.  I think overall that he is an average game coach, a plus personnel person and a very good people person.  His players appear to always have his back, when I have heard them talk about him.  I myself have coached (all be it pee wee) and understand how hard it really is.

I coach every Sunday from my seat at Reliant or my den.  I don't find it that difficult.  And it's not the play calling that gets me about Kubiak, it's his total inability to manage the game.  His being completely situationally unaware.

Vonnie Holliday made a big play with 27 seconds left on second down when he batted that pass at the line of scrimmage. Jacoby Jones was open on the sideline for a short gain which likely would've put them in a 3rd and short, if not a first down, instead of 3rd and 6.

Did Kubiak make the right call?  Did he step on his dick?  On one hand, yes, Kubiak is an Aggie, and therefore prone to dick-stepping.  On the other, he's a NFL head coach, so by title alone it's assumed he knows more about managing than the average NFL fan.
So you can handle this in two ways - 1) argue until you convince everybody here that you're right (25% odds of conversion), or 2) punt.

You have 3 seconds to decide.

Kubiak's decision was defendable for multiple reasons and he was ultimately successful.  I don't know how you can be so adamant that it was the wrong decision, but HH is obviously a Kubiak hater and this one was teed up for people like him.

What I do appreciate is Kubiak obviously does not give a shit about what people think of his decisions, because if that had not worked he might as well have started digging a grave for himself.  If Rackers kicks and misses (which is probably what would've happened), then it's the kicker's fault and not Kubiak.  Believe it or not, Kubiak was putting the team in the BEST position to win the game and would've been given 100% of the blame for the loss.  He knew all this and still made the decision that he felt was right.  Even though everyone thought Kubiak was a pussy for punting, it was actually the opposite.

If Rackers kicks and misses (which is probably what would've happened)

I don't think there's any way Rackers can kick a 53-yd field goal, even with a tail wind. The biggest risk was a block, since Rackers probably would have lowered his trajectory to try to eke out every last inch. And a block probably would have put Washington close to field-goal range right away.

Just got back to NC from Lubbock.  Went to the Texas Tech-UT game w/my in-laws.  They're all Red Raiders, so a Tech loss usually means an unpleasant weekend of endless bitching about refs, but they took it in stride this time.  I think they were really happy about Tech showing any signs of defensive prowess.

And I'm still ecstatic about the Texans!  Can't believe they actually won.

I've been thinking about this, too, and you are absolutely right. A block was a very real possibility with a kick of that distance and a block would have been suicidal.

What's great is that after eight years we are arguing over a point in a game that some people think was badly misplayed while the rest of us think the decision making was perfectly acceptable and rational. But unlike previous post-game arguments the result of the game was a Texan win. I think we're probably all still a little in shock over that.

Well, she used to date Romo.  Romo had playing issues while they dated.

I know her relevance to the Cowboys, I just don't see why MM would bother draggin out Kardashian but draw the line at Simpson.

(By the way, Miles and Kim broke up last weekend).

Yeah, he had a god-awful year last year (insert sarcasm throughout).  Not his fault they have an idiot OC.  That being said, am I completely happy with him?  Absolutely not.  He needs to be more assertive with the team, be a better leader.  I have said it before and I'll say it again...he is not the underlying problem with this team.  And, I bet there are about 25 GM's that would swap QB's with the Cowboys and not look back.

I won't find out the hard way, because frankly I don't give a damn about the cowboys.

Just thought it was interesting as on 1560 yesterday Sean and John were going over the top qb's in the NFL and the last 13 were brutal.  The next group up from brutal included Romo.  Honestly, I don't think he is horrible.  If he gets out of the pocket, he tends to force the ball and bad things happen.

I haven't blamed Romo for a loss yet this season.  But I totally agree that he needs to nut up and lead this team.  If the QB doesn't lead, the team doesn't win.  And I think that for any and all teams.

See this is the thing with Cowboy fans.  Their semi-talented players become flawed superheroes, as though the only reason why all their guys aren't dominant superstars is some abstract, fixable psychological flaw.  Like, it's not that Romo isn't as talented a quarterback as the top 10 qb's in the league, it's because he allows himself to become distracted, or he's not enough of a leader, or he chokes in big games.  It can't be that he's an above-average quarterback who can be neutralized by good teams, can't be.  From watching the Cowboys, the only players that I see repped as superstars who actually consistently produce like stars are Miles Austin, Whitten, Demarcus Ware, and sometimes Ratliff.  "No way!  Felix Jones!  27 teams in the league would trade their RB's for him!  He'd rush for 2,000 yards if our OC knew how to call plays."

I'm surprised by these comments by all you so-called football fans (which I am not, so I am totally ignorant in what I say most of the time when it comes to the NFL).  The reason I'm surprised is that you guys are trying to figure out what club would basically swap what they have for a Tony Romo.  What I am led to understand is that it's the system that makes the quarterback and not the quarterback makes the system in the NFL.  In college, a offensive coordinator would tailor his offense to match the talent of the quarterback (see: Young, Vince).  In the NFL, because of the sophistication and prowess of NFL defenses, you need to have the quarterback match the system you run.  IOW - Payton Manning is Payton Manning because the Colts run a system that fits his talent and what is left is to execute said system.

I listened the other day to a discussion on Matt Lineart.   Lineart is considered a bust by most and by others he is considered an NFL talent that was in the wrong system in Arizona.  Put Lineart in the *right* system for his talent and you get a really good, productive NFL quarterback.  I have also heard that Drew Brees, traded *away* from San Diego, is a perfect fit in New Orleans because he matched the system of short passes, quick reads, get it to the receiver in the best position to allow them to gain the yardage down field (rather than throw down field).  So this talk about swapping Romo is strange to me.  Why would Romo be a fit somewhere else, like say San Diego?  Is the system they run fitting of skills or would that be a horrible transition to make?  I don't know about rating a skill of a quarterback other than a very high level (re: not in-depth).  What are Romo's percieved skill sets?  Strong arm?  Quick reads?  Good touch passer?  What?

Then when you tell anyone what that skill set is, then isn't it better to then argue where Romo would fit in the schemes run at certain NFL organizations?  Y'all seem to be arguing without providing any insights at all other than you're arguing for arguing sake.  What happened to the SnS I once knew!!!

Every Cowboys fan believes are players are the best and there is no room for improvement.  Hell, just look at their record for proof.  There's no need to think they need to work on timing issues (Romo never tosses behind a receiver), no tackling drills (all tackles are wraps not bumps), and they never hold or interfer with the opposing team.

I love Ware. And anyone that knows me knows that I've loved him for years now.  I'm getting a crush on the the little rookie #44, he reminds me of an old love (Johnston).  But if you think I don't know my team has serious issues and they will lose, think again.  Do I think they should be 2-0 not 0-2, hell yeah?  They've played some shitty, undiscipled football.

And the way you seem to stereotype all Cowboys fans is the stereotypical response one gets from other fans.  They are my team, whether they suck or not.  Whether you, HH or anyone else says I'm going to hell for loving them.  Don't like them, then ignore them.  It's easy.

So you're saying that in the NFL, knock out the quarterback, you then make the whole entire system come crashing down on it's head?  WOW, the NFL sure is stupid then.

Quote

Does Brees have a strong arm?  I heard, and again I know little about the NFL, that Brees was not a fit because they *preferred* a system that befit Phillip River's very strong arm.  So I'm not trying to be a smart alleck, but this seems to be the general information I get when paying attention.  I guess I should not listen to the pundits when it comes to telling you what is the skill level and the various systems in the NFL designed to beat NFL defenses.  I heard that the NFL has basically become the league of the quarterback and wide receiver now.  Again, maybe I should stop listening and stay ignorant.

The best quarterbacks can fit into any system.

Is that Tony Romo's forte... a good quarterback that can fit *ANY* system.  Is that where you guys are arguing from or is the flaw with Romo that he does have some deficiencies that thus makes him more aptly fit to a certain system over another.

Quote
And Noe, Brees does throw down field but not stupidly.  Sean Payton's offense is designed to do it a lot.

I heard he doesn't have a strong arm and thus they pick and choose the down field, air it out type of plays.  See, that's what I get for listening in to NFL talk on the radio.  I heard Brees has the best skill and that is he is a coach on the field.  He makes the best reads of defenses and the system is designed to utilize that skill best.  He doesn't *NEED* to have a strong arm.

So you're saying that in the NFL, knock out the quarterback, you then make the whole entire system come crashing down on it's head?  WOW, the NFL sure is stupid then.

With the Colts?  Yes, it's that simple.  It's like saying that the Bulls were stupid to run their offense through Jordan, or the Rockets for running through Hakeem.  You have a transcendent talent, you tailor everything to them.

Quote
Aren't you making my point here?

No.  If the Vikings had a system that they thought worked, they would have found a QB for that system, not found Favre and then changed the system.

Quote
You're in the "he's a bust" crowd then?  Why is he even in the NFL then, seems to be a horrible idea to give him a job anywhere.  Are offensive coordinators that dumb?

Desperate.  He's a third-string QB.  There are very, very, VERY few humans capable of playing QB in the NFL.  Evidence would say, fewer than 32.

Quote
Does Brees have a strong arm?  I heard, and again I know little about the NFL, that Brees was not a fit because they *preferred* a system that befit Phillip River's very strong arm.

As said above, it's strong enough to go down the field.  SD kept Rivers b/c they were worried about Brees' injury, not b/c of his skills.

It's easy.

Every fan obviously tends to overrate their own team's players, but the Cowboys more than others seem to view all their guys as superstars, and more than other fans seem to project their players' faults as excuses rather than the lack of talent or skill that is really going on.  Most teams would look at a Romo-like quarterback, say a Cutler, Carson Palmer, Hassleback, Derek Anderson when he had his big year, and see him for what he is-- a pretty good QB who can win some games with a disciplined approach and the right talent around him.  But Cowboy fans, media, and management seem to regard Romo as a superstar quarterback, excusing anything less as the product of who his girlfriend is or his mental state in December or whatever.  Dez Bryant, for instance, is not a troubled, unrefined wide receiver with potential according to cowboy fans.  He's a goddamned superstar! and think nothing of trading or benching productive players like Patrick Crayton.  Roy Williams could be a productive player in the right role but fuck him!  he's not a superstar so let's talk shit about him and trade his ass!

That makes more sense.  But you're still nuts if you think those are the only guys as good or better than Romo.

Noted.  But I think you are nuts for making any argument about any scenario that makes David carr a better NFL QB than Matt Schaub.

I am merely stating my opinion, which everyone has the option of disagreeing with.

Didn't he bench Young in favor of the backup who does *NOT* have the same skills as Young?  IOW - Fisher prefers someone who can make the right calls on offense in the scheme he runs.

Vince turned the ball over a half dozen times in that game.  That's why he was benched.

So you're saying that in the NFL, knock out the quarterback, you then make the whole entire system come crashing down on it's head?  WOW, the NFL sure is stupid then.

Manning is the entire offense of the Colts.  Take out Manning, and the Colts are a 2 to 3 win team.  This isn't a very controversial statement.

Brees was very good in San Diego.  They went with Rivers for age/physicality/public relations reasons.

I liked him, alot.  Had the best hands on the team.  BUT, he is nowhere near the athletic freak that Dez Bryant is.  Whether that correlates to NFL success remains to be seen, but I completely agree to trading a player (that wants to be traded mind you) if he is not as good as the guy ultimately replacing him.  And, he got pissed because the writing was on the wall that somebody was going to lose playing time when Dez was drafted.  Think Miles Austin is going to sit?  Roy will end up on the sidelines in more sets this year if he does not watch out (I would like to say Roy is giving a MUCH better effort this year, I believe due to him relaizing how good Dez is).  Dez has only returned a punt for a touchdown and had 10 catches in two professional games.  I wonder what his numbers would look like if he was not so "unrefined"

i think that's what annoys so many people when they look at the cowboys.  why would they draft dez bryant in the first place?  why not draft a couple of 2-5 round receivers if it's a position of minor need?  but no, they have to get the next superstar, the guy who is declared a superstar before he even plays a down, even though 20-whatever teams passed on him.  the guy who's buddies with deion and michael irvin, who's so entitled by the time he steps on the field that he openly criticizes the veteran in front of him, refuses traditional rookie hazing rituals, etc.  and it's the problem with roy williams too.  a lot of teams, including the team he came from, would love to have him as their #2 receiver or even #1 on a bad team, but it's the cowboys who give up bunches of draft picks for him and declare him the next superstar.  so then when he fails it's time to break out the pitchforks, but it is the same people who built him up who are tearing him down, and if dez bryant starts melting down or stagnates in his development then you're going to see the same treatment.

They were not going to make the same mistake they made by not taking Randy Moss.  Dez was considered to be a top 5 talent by many "experts".  If you can get that guy at 20, you do it.  We will see how it pans out, but i in no way will throw stones at the organization for replacing a middle of the road NFL receiver with a very special skill set.

Yeah this has always bugged me.  I also never understand why people call the Cowboys "the most talented team in the league".  What are they basing that on?  Drafting Dez Bryant and having 3 RBs that have had a good game at one point in their career?

don't know.  Probably because of guys they have on the roster like: Jason Whitten, Terrence Newman, DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Andre Gurode, Jay Ratliff, Bradie James, Mike Jenkins, Matt McBriar (yes, he is a punter, but damn good), Leonard Davis, and Miles Austin. Along with the guys that have had "a good game in their career" as you stated.

DAMN good arguments can be made that Ware (OLB), Gurode (C), Jenkins (CB), Ratliff (NT/DL), McBriar (P), Austin (WR) and Whitten (TE) are all top 5 in the NFL at their positions.  7 positions where you are elite is pretty fucking talented, in my opinion.

I don't think he is top five.  My top 5 are Manning (P), Brees, Rivers, Schaub and Brady.  I would rank him 6 or 7.  "about 25" is what it is...my guesstimate.

Astroholic, Miles Austin is a stud.  There has been ample time for defenses to "figure him out" and he is proving to be a legit elite #1 WR.  The only clear cut guy ahead of him is Andre Johnson (unquestionably #1 in the NFL), I would also take Larry Fitzgerald over Austin.  That's it.  For me at least.  Look at his numbers since becoming a starter....very, very, very good.

Sporadic, for realz, do you not see how some of your posts fit this stereotype we're presenting about Cowboy fans/media/hangers-on?  See, I could do exactly what you're doing for the Texans or almost any other team really.  I'll take the players on a team that are solid players or at least have a rep for being solid players and I'll pretend like they're all stars, and then I'll take the best of that group and assert that they're top-of-the-league stars.

Here goes:  The reason people call the Texans so talented is probably because of guys like Eric Winston, Vonta Leach (yes, he is a fullback but damn good), Owen Daniels, Kevin Walter (yes, he is a #2 receiver but damn good), Andre Johnson, Antoine Caldwell, Arian Foster, Matt Schaub, Brian Cushing, Mario Williams, Bernard Pollard, Demeco Ryans.  DAMN good arguments can be made that Winston, Leach, Johnson, Schaub, Cushing, Williams, Pollard, Daniels (pre-knee-injury) and Ryans are all top 5 in the NFL at their positions.  9 positions where you are top 5 in the league is pretty fucking talented, in my opinion.

While you are fucking yourself, go make your list.  I never once said you guys were not a talented team, or that Dallas was more talented.  I was merely refuting the claim that they were not as talented as perceived.  They are very talented at a lot of positions, like the Texans are and have been the last few years.  This in no way makes them a great team, just a talented one.  As far as my fandom, I grew up watching the Cowboys and have been through all the highs and lows, never once bailing on them.  I am a true fan of that team, and not a delusional one.  I know when they are good, bad, capable, not capable, talented and not.  I am in no way a bandwagoner or stereotypical anything.  What you are is a stereotypical Cowboy basher.  I live and die every week with my team as you do yours, so don't fucking "for realz" me.

you have made several recent posts and claims about the talent of individual cowboys that are, at best, exaggerations.  i, like all other non-cowboy fans, routinely have to listen to media members and fans and hangers-on talk about cowboy players like they're all superstars and how any failings are the result of who their girlfriend is or who the coach is or whatever.  it's never because they're not as talented as the vikings or bears or whoever they lose to.  romo tends to play worse in december and the playoffs.  that can't possibly be because he faces better teams, and teams who have an entire year of film to figure him out.  no, it's because he's not enough of a leader or his girlfriend is some crappy singer or because jason garrett is a bad coordinator or wade doesn't crack the whip enough.

i know that real cowboy fans are not fair-weather fans, that is true.  certainly, there are douchebags around the country who veer in their direction when they're good or unusually glamorous but yes I know that's not real dallas.  nobody accuses their fans of not being devoted.

the texans seem to have some good players, as does almost every team, but i'm not delusional about them.  andre johnson is obviously a top 5 receiver, maybe higher.  honestly, that's really it.  schaub is starting to enter some elite discussions, but i don't think any texan fan wouldn't trade him right now for any one of the truly elite quarterbacks.  maybe cushing in a couple of years?  maybe eric winston?  i don't know, but i don't feel entitled about my team.  if they lose it's because they suck, it's not because of who their girlfriends are.

You just described San Antonio sports radio perfectly.  Romo sucks, Jerry Jones will find a winner because that's what he does, the Cowboys longsnapper is the best longsnapper in the NFL, etc etc.

J Jones needs to find a winner to replace himself.

Joey, I'd like to reintroduce you to Bryce Harper. (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2010/09/bryce_harpers_favorite_sports.html)

He was on sports talk radio in D.C. talking about his fandom:

"If I'm rooting or somebody, it's the Dallas Cowboys," Harper said, while Holden Kushner and Brian Mitchell entered dueling states of cardiac arrest

Finally, Mitchell became sentient enough to ask why.

"Why do I like the Cowboys?" Harper repeated. "Because they were always a winner when I was growing up."

The Cowboys last won a Super Bowl when Harper was approximately 4 years old.

To absolutely nobody's surprise, Bryce's other favorite teams:

MLB:  Yankees
NBA:  Lakers
College basketball:  Duke
College football:  Texas.

Well, at least Harper won't have the embarrassing fall from grace that Lebron has had.  He will be hated before he even takes a swing in the Majors.

Nah, not when you're a fan with a legitimate claim to the team.  Unlike, say, a Cowboy fan in Houston.

Tell that to the thousands of "UT Fans" that have never stepped foot on the UT campus, particularly in a UT classroom.

So, a someone from NYC or Pittsburgh should root for the Texans and not the Giants or Steelers?

I disagree with the bandwagoning of "I root for team X because they are winners".

I wouldn't go that far.  A regional allegiance to a college team is more than reasonable.  UT has done quite a lot for the Austin community.  Certainly enough to warrant support from those that didn't actually attend it.

Hey Lurch!  Please cease Cowboyfan-baiting!  I hate the Cowboys as much as anyone, but consider this: they will be completely insufferable if the Texans lose on Sunday!  Or, perish the thought, the Cowboys make the playoffs and the Texans don't!  It's a matter of maintaining harmony.

Meh. While my allegiance is to Baylor, my favorite non-Baylor team is the Longhorns.  Just kind of a Texan living outside of Texas thing...

*note: I stepped on the UT campus a number of times when I was at Baylor.  I remember very few of those times - thank you 6th street - but I was there!

Whoa whoa whoa... No sir. Is your favorite non-Astros MLB team the Cubs, b/c you miss the Central Division? I lived a thousand miles from Texas for a time, as well, and seeing burnt orange t-shirts around Philadelphia (even for sale at a local department store) only made me dislike the Longhorns more.

I've seen 1 meaningful Baylor game vs. an Oregon team in the last decade or so. 2006(?) CSW game against Oregon State (Bears won).  Only one in the place rooting for the Bears.  But for the fact that the others in the bar were Oregonians I'd've gotten my ass kicked...

But I digress.  Every game an Oregon teams plays against the Longhorns, folks here come out of the woodwork to taunt me about it.  I guess I'm the only Texan they know (kind of like getting taunted in November presidential elections, but there I know that I am the only republican type that these Portlanders know...).  After a while, it becomes more about defending your roots (Texas), than rooting for the Longhorns.  You do that for a decade or so and you kind of develop a rooting interest.  Just sayin'...

What I'm most apprehensive for this game is a repeat of the Texans-Titans home game toward the end of the inaugural season, where the crowd was just too hyped up and too expectant of some imaginary Bud Adams pig roast that the result was just audience confusion and flat play by the team.  This Texans team is obviously way better than that one, but if I'm the Cowboys I throw the kitchen sink at the Texans in the first quarter.

That was my point ("But for the fact that the others in the bar were Oregonians I'd've gotten my ass kicked...") - I was in Portland, Oregon so there was no danger of getting my ass kicked.

This is where your reasoning is flawed.  Just because people make assumptions about you doesn't mean you have to end up adopting those assumptions.

When I've travelled internationally and told people I'm from Texas, they'll go off on how absurd it is that a "civilized" nation uses the death penalty and how Texas kills the most people.  I guess they are expecting a debate with me, and that because I'm from Texas I'm in favor of the death penalty.  I happen to not be and refuse to stick up for the death penalty.  Just because they make a snap assumption of me doesn't mean I have to live up to it.  It's no different with the Longhorns.

My experience on the East Coast is that if you tell people you are from Texas they assume you're a Cowboys fan.  In fact, that's usually the first thing out of their mouths (besides, in my case, why don't you have an accent).  College football is not all that important here so it doesn't come up.  No East Coast baseball fan acknowledges baseball teams West of the Mississippi.
