UT @ Tech shouldn't disappoint.  Neither of these teams are as good as 2008, both have a lot to prove and I'd be surprised to see either come out flat.  Over-amped maybe and I'd be shocked if inconsistency isn't the norm.  I'm also not a huge fan of the early matchup, even though it probably favors Tech.

Texans @ Redskins - home office is in VA and I just happen to be going next week.  I'd like to be able to razz them a bit but I'll have to be gentle, most are VT alums and may not have much spirit left.  I'm also looking forward to catching the Astros @ Nats if I can get loose from work in time.

My favorite comment on VT:

I am so psyched for Sunday that I can barely contain myself. And by contain myself I am referring to the full growler of Prost Pilsner from NXNW brewpub, which I just cracked open with Friday evening merriment. I raise a glass to the Texans and the football gods, real and fantasy, hoping the Texans can come out of this weekend with an intact record and good health. The last time they started off 2-0 something very bad happened to the knee of a certain player, allowing Andre Davis to become the team's go-to deep threat for much of that season. Let's win, but not have another incident plz. Thank you FB Gods.

GO TEXANS!!

Come Sunday I would love to see BUWebguy get to raz Astrofrog.  And, you Texans fans will get to see a little more diverse offense this week.  Don't expect them to run on the Skins like they did the Colts (not even close), but figure they will have a good day in the passing game.

I'd love the same. (No offense, Astrofrog.) Enjoy the game, Taras!

If you can maintain the buzz long enough, the Cougars - UCLA game is at 9:30.  UCLA comes to Austin next week for the Horns "signature" out of conference game.  The two games should tell us who is better between UT and UH as long as you take into account the road/home difference and the fact that they are two completely separate events.  THIS IS HOW WE ANALYZE COLLEGE FOOTBALL!

As long as it's nothing like the last time UCLA came to Austin I'll be fine and severely less sunburned no matter the result

Sure, why not.  I thought TCU did not look very good against a very mediocre OreSt team.  When you have that much speed and athleticism at the QB position you can always make things interesting.

The score was a very pretty throw on the run. Perfectly accurate. Just wait until GD realizes he's been rolling him out to the right and corrects that oversight.

The first drive confused me.   Pass, Pass, Run, Punt is not the same as Run, Run, Pass, Punt even though it has the same net result.

These first three games I've seen some very impressive size. I don't have a good sense of their respective speeds but in terms of pure bulk I'd say that Tech and Rice are very, very evenly matched with respect to their sideline dance teams.

See, and I'm totally willing to admit I just don't know enough about the subject to know what I'm looking at, I don't see "cannon."   A majority of his passes are wobbly, inaccurate snorts.

But not for college?

I just remember having many discussions during the WYO and RICE games with the other people watching that a lot of the "great passes" were actually "great catches" by the receiving core coming back to catch balls behind them or over them.

I don't have any sort of Gilbert fixation and haven't seen enough of him to know whether I like him or not but it's always possible that the QB is putting the ball exactly where it needs to be and the receiver ran a bad route.

Chykie Brown is terrible.

I agree, but I have a hard time believing all 5 receivers are running bad routes.

There is no spinning this game.   All you had to do is not self destruct(3 tipped picks) in the red zone and there would be a comfortable lead.    The defense is playing great.

Total absence of downfield blocking. Like that's the worst of their problems right now, but still.

I've noticed that the WRs are by and large terrible blockers. I've also noticed that the Horns like to pull an OT and that OT almost never does anything, getting to the play far too late to have any impact. They'd be better off sending that tackle into the backfield and having him put a helmet on a linebacker.

Tre Newton now in the locker room.

Great?

It's not perfect by any means, but I don't see how you can say otherwise.  7 of Tech's points belong to a turnover by the offense.

For the game,  Tech has 138 yards of offense, and the offense keeps trying to give the game away.    They have allowed Tech to move the ball twice all night:  on the score that tied the game at 14, and the drive where Curtis Brown should have had a pick 6 instead of a pick 3.   Considering the state of the offense at the moment, I'd say they have held up their end of the bargain.    If the D wasn't playing great, the team would be down double digits in Lubbock.

If the offense could get out of it's own way and leave this game up to the defense, the game be comfortably in Texas' favor right now.

I don't see how you could say otherwise.

ND and MSU tied until 15 seconds ago.   This shitfest against Tech.   Clemson/Auburn just went OT.  And the only ranked team vs ranked team just started.

Plus: if you're into this sort of shit, UH vs UCLA.

UH's defensive line is simply getting blown off the ball.  They must be giving up 30 lbs at each position.

Apparently Schaub thinks he has an unlimited amount of time to throw the ball.  Unfortunately, no one told the Redskins, who sacked him (again) to take them out of makeable field goal range.

I think Cooley is a bit past decent, as is Sellers out of the backfiled, and Portis is a very good back when healthy.  Washington is a well coached team with some good players, not like y'all are playing a patsy.

Portis and Sellers are both well past their prime and Cooley is decent.  it's a well coached team, but the talent is subpar.  They're like the anti-texans.

The Texans' secondary is in complete shambles.

Yeah, I don't understand how they hold Indy in check, more or less, and then get carved up by Washington. This secondary looks pretty bad today.

Pretty bad?  There are multiple receivers open without a Texan within 20 yards.  On Every.  Single.  Play.  It's like they're playing with only 8 guys.

And yet they are also not getting any pressure on McNabb.  So what exactly is the defense doing out there?

Peyton threw for over 400 yards. And all the corners are either rookies or second year players. So I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised when the secondary shows itself to be terrible. The Texans need to generate some serious pass rush to keep the secondary from getting torched every week.

I am not surprised the secondary is terrible.  I am surprised the pass rush is non-existent, particularly since the Redskins offensive line is relatively weak.

As bad as they've played on defense, a couple of stops, and this game is still winnable.

Watching Jones squirm would be awesome. Watching the Redskins play in Dallas for a ring would make want to me puke (in fact, I'm pretty sure I'd rather skip the superbowl that watch the Redskins play in one).  I'm sorry I even mentioned it, as I'm feeling a bit sickly already at the mere thought of it.

This is the laziest, most uninspired defensive performance I've ever seen from the Texans.  Heads need to roll.

I'd rather watch ANYONE but Dallas play in one.  To watch the Redskins in a Super Bowl in Dallas would be eclisped only by the Texans playing in it.

They're not gonna fucking kick here.  Sweet Jesus, please tell me they're not gonna punt with 3 seconds left.  Even Gary Kubiak isn't this fucking stupid.  Is he?

Shanahan's random 3 seconds left time out is a good indicator of where Kubiak learned from.

I'll tell you guys something. I have no problem at all not attempting that 52 yard field goal. I probably would have gone for it on fourth down but I wasn't upset at the punt. I was outraged, though, that Turk punted the ball into the fucking end zone. That is simply unconscionable from that short distance. You have twenty yards of sideline to work with. Two of them, in fact. Fuck me, that pisses me off.

I think you have take a reasonable try to win the game rather than giving the ball over

I probably would have gone for it on fourth down but I wasn't upset at the punt.

I'd be fine with that.  Again, trying to win rather than just giving the ball back.

I hated Kubiak for not letting Rackers kick, but whatever.  It worked.  I'm still a Kubiak fan.  That was the most exciting/ridiculous football game I've seen since the '05 Rose Bowl.

Still can't believe Kubiak didn't kick that field goal.  Still can't believe the Texans won.  Andre Johnson is really good.  Still can't believe that idiot coach of the chiefs cut bernard pollard.

next week with a chance to drive a big fat middle finger right through the cowfucks season.

Agreed.  It was so much the Texans, but not, which is nice I guess?  I'll just be pleased with the win and try not to think about it too much.

It's the NFL.  A win is a win.  Every team has holes, and it's pretty obvious the Texans' secondary is the hole on this team.

I don't blame the players too much.  They are what they are...young and inexperienced.  But they're getting abused by everyone, including Arena League refugees.  The coaches have *got* to figure out something to help them.  I don't know what the "fix" is, but someone on that staff had better figure out something.

Exactly.  There are no polls, there are no computer rankings.  All games count the same.  Just win, baby.

The fix is pressure.  Manning and McNabb are no Arena refugees, but they fall under pressure just like the rest of e'm.

Pressure will improve when Cushing returns.

I hate to bitch after a nice win....but I know what your are thinking as am I.  I have been giving Kubs the benefit of the doubt, but his play calling (or his offensive coordinators play calling) Leaves much to be desired.  That 53 yrd field goal  (or horrible punt) in OT should have been from much closer.  Mix in a freaking run when the opponent thinks you are passing.  Another thing, does our defense coordinator not understand that a well timed blitz would help the secondary.  Conservative football drives me to drink.

And one other thing, I was so mad about not trying to kick that fieldgoal that I was almost kicked my dog.  Then that horendous (sp) punt.  If you don't thing your kicker can make it, then have your punter (turk sucks) punt it out of bounds or go for it.  It worked out, but..well I cant believe it did.  These decisions will come back and bit this team.  Okay I am done.

Not suggesting that the Texans secondary is the best in the biz, nor that I have much technical knowledge on the matter, but they have just faced two of the premier passers in the history of game.  And beaten them.

Did you notice how the Redskins' defense shut down Dallas last week, yet got burned by Schaub for ~500 yards?

You need to take OSF off of ignore.
I might have missed this elsewhere, but Keenum is done for the season after tearing his ACL in the 2nd quarter. Backup quarterback Cotton Turner will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his clavicle in the third quarter. LINK

Schaub was playing from behind, the same as Manning in week 1, so he had to throw alot of passes.  And don't think the Skins are something great.  They've played two games so far and tried to give them both away.  The Texans were willing to take it.

I want to see the Texans next game against Indy.  Peyton took his brother out to the shed last night and beat the shit out of him.

They have beaten them because their offense has saved their collective ass.  It's like winning a baseball game 15-13 and then saying "nothing wrong with our pitching..."

When the team wins, money (contributions, endowments, etc.) comes in.  That money helps Tier One.  Plus the national recognition.

So, your acid test for the Texans is how they do on the road against the team that was ranked #1 by many before last week?

Dallas shut Dallas down last week.  The 'Skins gave up almost 400 yards in last weeks win.  Dallas will move the ball against the Texans and the Texans will move the ball against the Cowboys - and both coaches will try their damdest to give the game away. I think Dallas has a better chance of winning this game standing at 0-2 (I actually had this one as an L when the schedule came out, but I also had them 2-0 at this point).

Dallas will have trouble with the pass rush as their O line is bad.  It is very hard to run on the Texans dfense, so that is out.  Your QB sucks.  Not saying that the Texans will win, but they should.

Texans (like the Titans, Jags, Patriots, Chargers, etc.) are obviously far better prepared for what the Colts offer than the Giants and many other teams that will play them this year.  On the broadcast last night, the announcers kept talking about how The Colts were so well prepared for the Giants trying to run over them like the Texans did, but it wasn't as simple as the Texans just "running over" the Colts.  The Texans zone blocking scheme is perfectly suited to catching The Colts aggressive d-line off-balance, Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter are often called in to block like tight ends on running plays which creates extra cut-back lanes, and our backs make their breaks and hit the hole fast which neutralizes the colts' read and react linebackers.  On defense, Texans know to be patient and not allow Peyton quick scores even if it means giving up easy yards underneath.  I don't think the Texans will beat the Colts in Indy, but they'll definitely be a lot more competitive.

The Titans are very good at play calling, until Jeff Fisher remembers that he hates Vince Young.

Jets on Dfense + Play calls.
New Orleans on Offense  ++ play calls..

Yeah, he beat them and he was getting pounded in the first half.  Mind you Ware was on the sideline for one of the TDs.  I am unsure why.  I admit the Cowboys have some problems (ha, more like a lot) but they aren't complete disasters.  Romo's 2 INTs did help with field position for Cutler also.

Hates him = let's him try to pass.

#1 O-line will be complete for the second time this season.
#2 the Dallas D has only allowed 127 yards rushing for the season.
#3 sporadic doesn't like me to comment on Romo
#4 DeMarcus Ware is a beast.  And Spears on the other side is no slouch.
#5 As long as Mike Jenkins in the secondary is okay, I'll take my secondary over yours.
#6 coaches for both teams suck.
#7 Dallas may or may not have a good kicker.

The game will come down to the team that is least badly coached.

I think Dallas has a better chance of winning this game standing at 0-2 (I actually had this one as an L when the schedule came out, but I also had them 2-0 at this point).

Out of curiosity, what have you seen from the Cowboys so far that makes you think 0-2 is where they need to be in order to beat the 2-0 Texans?

You might as well have just slapped HH in the face with an iron glove.  This aggression will not stand.

Kubiak is not a horrible play caller.  He's a horrible decision maker.

Desperation will only increase the style of undisciplined recklessness they play with already.  Can Kubiak handle that kind of unpredictability?

Still can't believe Kubiak didn't kick that field goal.  Still can't believe the Texans won.

I can. In fact, I said "punt it, please!" when that 3rd down bootleg play fell incomplete because there's no fucking way Neil Rackers makes a 53yd FG on the road to win a game for the Texans. You'd think most, if not all, Texans fans remember all the negative results in OT and would be likewise pessimistic about the chance that kicks goes through and the team walks off the field winners. Instead everyone's bashing Kubiak for a smart, conservative decision that gave his team the best chance to win. I thought it was the right call then and I still do now. It would've been even better if Turk hadn't shat himself on the punt.

because they may get their heads out of their asses and play with a little desperation.  Dallas gets complacent when they are playing well (and it seems they are complacent playing poorly now, as well).  They played two absolutely wretched games, and still had chances to win both of them.  If they play a clean game, I think they win this week.  Their D matches up well with pass happy teams.  They had a field day last year with Philly (X3) and NO.  I like their chances if they can keep Foster & Slaton in check.

And, BG, I think Romo gets way too much praise and grief.  Both picks yesterday were off tipped passes (one was a very good pass, the other questionable, but should not have resulted in an INT)

Witten reached back and tipped one right to the DB.  I forget who tipped the other, but it was not off target

Witten got pulled yesterday after banging his head on the turf.  Came up woozy and the docs would not let him back in the game.  he was none too pleased about it, eiter.  I thought he was going to mame that poor doctor.

See that's the thing I don't get.... how could any Texans fan remotely believe Rackers would've made that kick? I am an unabashed homer who generally thinks positively about my sports teams, but even I couldn't let myself believe that I'd see Rackers hit a kick from that distance when I've been kicked in the gut repeatedly by Kris Brown. So, you're left with three realistic choices--1) punt and try to pin them back; 2) fake the FG; 3) go for it on fourth down.

A fake FG would've been almost unthinkably suicidal at that point. I can only imagine how badly that could've turned out (see e.g., RB Chris Brown's terrible pass attempt vs. JAC last season). Going for it on fourth down was a consideration, but the Redskins had that 3rd down play sniffed out pretty well. The safe call was the punt. Extend the game and let your defense try to make a play.

I'm no expert, but I think punting in that situation in a game that is decided by sudden death rules isn't the right call.  Kick the FG or line-up in the normal offense and go for it.

I would certainly not be making such a decision based off of Texans' history kicking or in OT.  That's closer to making a decision based on superstition rather than facts.   Might as well be questioning what underwear you're wearing.  It's the 2nd game of THIS season with THIS year's team and this year's kicker.  Also, if you don't have confidence in your kicker to make a road game winning 53 yard field goal in the NFL, you have the wrong guy.

I have to believe he made the call because of confidence in his D to improve his odds.  I disagreed with it then, and do now, but to be fair, he did get unlucky with that stupid fucking spearing call.  Otherwise, it likely would have been a punt to turn the ball back over to the Texans rather than a missed field goal.

I was already pissed by the conservative play call to end regulation.  I..like most fans, am emotionally charged while the game is going on.  In retrospect, I think he made the right call.  Turk needs to aim for the sidelines, Just like Slaton needs to learn how to return kicks (one yard line...pffffttt).

Well, the whole sudden death thing also means you try not to make dumb decisions that could give Donovan McNabb a 25yd field with which to win the game. Two of those choices would've been needlessly risky and dumb. The safe play was the one Kubiak called. If you don't have a kicker that can hit from that distance into the wind, punt the fucking football.

Rackers was brought in for his accuracy inside the 45 yard line.  Brown had a better leg, but lost his confidence.  I am sure the Texans will continue to look for the perfect kicker in the off season.

Letting your emotions about a player no longer on the team make poor strategic decisions for you is *your* problem.  That doesn't make it good football.  It's the NFL.  It's overtime.  It's a 50-yard FG.  You kick the fucking ball.

Absolutely yes. I only mentioned the past because it informs how us fans view the present. If you've seen the script unfolding before you, it's generally hard to believe the result will be any different, which is why I'm surprised so many thought in the moment that it was a crazy decision to punt.

Also, if you don't have confidence in your kicker to make a road game winning 53 yard field goal in the NFL, you have the wrong guy.

Then we have the wrong kicker for you. If you've paid attention to Rackers throughout his career, it's well known that he's not a distance kicker. He's an accurate kicker with limited range. It was a trade off the organization was willing to make because the chances are better that he will be mostly kicking from inside 45 yds than outside 50. That's why they gave him the job over Kris Brown.

Good point. Kubiak sent a message to his defense that he believed in them to get the job done. They did. I think this is going to prove to be a key game in shaping the psyche of this team.

But you can't look at the result and say it was a bad call.  That's like saying they Colts shouldn't have started Peyton Manning against the Texans...after all, it didn't work out.

If you have the right kicker.

If you have an NFL kicker.  Which the Texans do.  Rackers is perfectly capable of making that field goal.

Absolutely yes. I only mentioned the past because it informs how us fans view the present. If you've seen the script unfolding before you, it's generally hard to believe the result will be any different, which is why I'm surprised so many thought in the moment that it was a crazy decision to punt.

I thought we were talking about a logical coaching decision, not a fan's batshit crazy irrational emotional bias.  My bad.

As for the 50+ yard accuracy leading to the call, I stand corrected.  That makes sense if the Texans knew they were bringing on a kicker with no expectations for him from that distance.

That's irrelevant.  It's the right call.
Bullfuckingshit. Who won the game?

The right call is the one that takes all the relevant facts into account and balances the risks and rewards. You don't kick a 53 yd FG attempt into the wind with a kicker who can barely clear 50 on a good day. That does not give your team the best chance to win.

I'm not.  A good result from the punt does not excuse Kubiak's idiocy on the initial play call.

Well, I can see we won't get anywhere with this argument.  I think it was the right call for the situation.

The thing that really bugs the hell out of me with Kubiak is his conservative play calling, (both offensively and defensively) if he is making the calls.  Why at the end of regulation are you letting the clock tick off and jogging to the line.  Win the fucking game.

Bullfuckingshit. Who won the game?

So you're saying it was a mistake for Shanahan to start Donovan McNabb?  You're saying Steve Slaton's fielding the kickoff at the 1 foot line was smart?  Just because you won the game does not mean every call you made was a smart one.  Pull your head out of your ass.  For once.

Really? Do you not understand he was kicking into the wind? Did you not see his 52 yd FG inside the Superdome barely clear the crossbar by a matter of inches? Did you not see him already miss a long FG earlier in the game?

1.  There was little or no wind.
2.  Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
3.  The miss earlier in the game was not short of the goal posts.

But you can't look at the result and say it was a bad call.

I'm not looking at the result.  I'm saying that missing the kick is an easily foreseeable result, and that you must make your decision with that in mind.

from chron.com

Quote
Kubiak surely understood that his sending out punter Matt Turk instead of Rackers might be misinterpreted, but head coaches are paid a lot of money to make those kind of decisions. Kubiak said he went "with my gut," and he wound up looking like a genius.

"There was a little breeze coming that way (into Rackers' face)," Kubiak said. "If you miss that (from the Redskins' 34), they've got to go 20 yards to beat us. I felt good about our defense. I thought they'd made a few nice stops in the quarter. It's one of those things that just worked out. If it doesn't work out, it's not good, but it worked out.

"(Rackers) said, 'Coach, I'm OK. I'm good. But there was obviously a breeze coming from that end because all the kickoffs coming from the other way were so much longer. He told me after the game, 'You know I would have made that.' I said, 'Well, now you tell me.' "

Turk's punt landed in the end zone despite the Texans drawing a deliberate delay-of-game penalty to move him five yards further back, so the Redskins took over at the 20, just 14 yards from where they would have been had Kubiak let Rackers kick. Turk was mad at himself for not burying Washington, but he praised Kubiak's thought process.

"That was just the call made by the head coach, and it ended up being a great call," he said. "It was borderline, right at the cutoff distance (for a field goal). We were going into a little breeze, and if you don't hit it perfectly clean, the ball doesn't go anywhere. I'm not happy with the punt, but I'm happy with the end result."

Right.  My gripe with Kubiak is that this is his first season, and he hasn't won a Super Bowl yet.  Way to pay attention.

It's greater than slightly possible that you know very little, as evidenced by your repeatedly wrong assessment of Matt Schaub and David Carr. Now it's Kubiak's turn to prove your stubborn old ass wrong again.

No, you didn't say it was a  chip shot, you said it was a 50 yd FG. It was actually three yards longer, which is considerable at that distance.

Wrong in the minds of dipshits like you who think Kris Brown missing a field goal last year has any bearing on whether or not Neil Rackers will make one this year.

The Texans knew that about Rackers, as did this "batshit crazy" fan who's had him on his fantasy team in previous years. Maybe that's why I was the only one in the bar who knew punting was the correct call to make.

Did you or did you not type:

"How well did it work out for Shanahan?"

Correct.  How well did the decision to kick work for him?  As in, what happens to your team if you miss?  Is it more likely than not that you will make the 50+ yard field goal?  Is the likelihood that your defense can get the ball back on a full field more or less than the likelihood that your kicker can make a field goal of that distance?

Kubiak knows that his kicker is poor from over 50 yards.  He knows (as he stated) that a miss from 54 gives the Redskins a very, very short field.  (Note that the Skins would have had a 40-yarder for the win if Rackers had missed, instead of the punt).

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

As I've already stated, I was referring to the fan response in the moment that decision was made. How could any Texans fan remotely bring themselves to believe a Texans kicker would line up a hit that kick in that situation? Texans fans are a horribly pessimistic lot, yet everyone got wildly positive real quick expecting a miracle kick that a guy like Rackers was not at all likely to make?

Fan emotion aside, Kubiak knew his kicker's history, as did I. You clearly don't.

Just think what kind of argument would be taking place if the Texans had lost.

They had no business winning that game, but good teams find ways to win messy games. I believe it is now safe to say this is a good team with a strong coaching staff. Redskins fans must be apoplectic over losing that game.

Bullshit.  I'll admit that it doesn't give a high level of detail, but given everything else I've said on the subject, you're just being willfully stubborn.

I'm just reading what you write.  So what is "it" that did/didn't work out, if not the result?

And I know that your logic isn't bad enough to make a play with less than 25% chance of success, when its failure greatly increases your chances of losing, and yet here we are.

1.  I don't believe the chance was less than 25%
2.  The punt gained them a whopping 15 yards.  If you believe that strongly in your defense, an extra 15 yards is meaningless.
3.  That very well could have been your only chance to win the game.  In fact, if the Redskins don't miss that second attempt, it was.  You don't pass up a perfectly good chance to win that game.

They were at the 36.  And I never said it ALWAYS WORKS.  You must have gone to the Dan Fouts school of football knowledge.

The result demonstrates the possibility that Kubiak was dealing with in his decision making process.  You're either unwilling, or unable, to process the possibility that a kicker who has missed 15 of his last 20 kicks from 50+ yards would miss again.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

No, I'm criticising the fact that it was even attempted.  If Turk puts it on the 1-yard line, it's still a dumb call.

Again, risks vs. rewards. You are not going to score from seventy yards out with :03 on the clock, and running a play only increases the risks of somebody getting hurt or turning the ball over for a TD the other way. Ask Dallas fans about that.

Rackers is not a distance kicker. He is an accuracy kicker. He made that preseason 52 yd kick from indoors, on turf, literally by inches...and you think he has a good chance to make a longer kick in tougher conditions?

They have beaten them because their offense has saved their collective ass.  It's like winning a baseball game 15-13 and then saying "nothing wrong with our pitching..."

Right.  But I'd like to see how the secondary performs against non-HoF QBs before I assume that they're fundamentally flawed.  Not saying that they aren't, but from my layman's viewpoint, I haven't really seen them tripping on their dicks and giving up yards on clearly blown assignments / formations.

If you're not trying to score with three seconds left, what's the point? To draw a penalty? Sure, you can throw it up there praying for a PI call or whatnot, but you're also exposing your QB to unnecessary risk, and you're still opening yourself to the possibility of a turnover returned for a TD. BTW, where was this swashbuckling HH during last year's Jacksonville game?

You're on the road and you've battled back from a 27-10 deficit. You can afford to play it safe and win it in OT.

The potential impact if you miss the kick is not irrelevant.

I think it was pointed out at the time that the 'Skins needed two plays to get back to the point on the field where they would've taken possession on a missed FG.  Juss sayin'.

Yeah, but that was because 1) Turk fucked up the punt, and 2) whoever it was got the idiotic spearing penalty on a sack that would have otherwise really fucked Washington. The fact that those two things happened doesn't mean that the decision to punt was clearly moronic.

I am not talking about the 3 second punt play.  I am talking about the series of play calling that led up to the three second punt play.  The punt was the right call, though I would have snapped it to my qb and had him take a knee, as the skins had no more timeouts.

You might be a worse coach than Kubiak (hard to believe I know) if you don't know that the clock stops on a change of possession.

Well isn't that basically what they did then? And how are the redskins timeouts relevant in that case?

Thank Tebus it wasn't Slaton assigned to take that knee. He probably would've run out of bounds with one second left on the clock.

Yes.  Coaching at any level is not easy.  I question Kubiak and his play calling, but I am a fan.  I think overall that he is an average game coach, a plus personnel person and a very good people person.  His players appear to always have his back, when I have heard them talk about him.  I myself have coached (all be it pee wee) and understand how hard it really is.

I coach every Sunday from my seat at Reliant or my den.  I don't find it that difficult.  And it's not the play calling that gets me about Kubiak, it's his total inability to manage the game.  His being completely situationally unaware.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

That’s what I thought as well.  I had really high hopes when the Texans drafted him, but it has not completely panned out.  Cushing is pretty fast for a big dude and can cover well.

The thing I like most about Cushing is that when he hits someone, they go down.  Right.  Then.

You are only seeing 1 part of what it means to be a coach.  Good luck with that ego.

Turn up your sarcasm meter.

I will try.  But I am still not sure you don't think you could do a better job.

a kicker who has missed 15 of his last 20 kicks from 50+ yards would miss again.

Tell me this isn't what you used to come up with your 25% probability

Better than Kubiak at managing a game?  Of course I could.  He may be the only one though.
