“…it was such a loosey-goosey era,” Rodriguez said.
Hey everyone was doing it . Or was it the the heat in Texas?
“Can I have an edge just to get out there and play every day?” he said to himself.
“I felt a tremendous pressure to play, and play really well” , unlike everyone else who were just lollygagging.
Corrupted by the money? “I had just signed this enormous contract … ”
Rodriguez said. “The truth needed to come out a long time ago. I’m glad it’s coming out today.”
Sure today, because Dec 16, 2007, it was time to lie,
“For the record, have you ever used steroids, human growth hormone or any other performance-enhancing substance?” Katie Couric asked.
“No,” Rodriguez replied.
Asked if he had ever been tempted to use any of those things, Rodriguez told Couric, “No.”
“You never felt like, ‘This guy’s doing it, maybe I should look into this, too? He’s getting better numbers, playing better ball,'” Couric asked.
“I’ve never felt overmatched on the baseball field. I’ve always been a very strong, dominant position. And I felt that if I did my work as I’ve done since I was, you know, a rookie back in Seattle, I didn’t have a problem competing at any level.
So, no,” he replied.
But if it wasn’t for those pesky kids…
“I mean, what makes me upset is that Sports Illustrated pays this lady, Selena Roberts, to stalk me. …This lady is coming out with all these allegations, all these lies ….”
“Lies” takes the meaning here of things that are true. At least he realizes, “I was stupid for three years. I was very, very stupid” .
” I wasn’t even being truthful with myself. How am I going to be truthful with Katie or CBS? Today, I’m here to tell the truth, and I feel good about that. I think my fans deserve that.”
Who?, that guy standing over there by himself?
“The more honest we can all be, the quicker we can get baseball [back] to where it needs to be.”
So really Alex Rodriguez is taking the lead in restoring baseball’s reputation.
One problem, Lance Berkman is pissed,
“The problem with this whole sordid mess (is) now everybody (is questioned),” he said. “Even today, all of a sudden my name gets brought up in an article about steroids, and I’ve never even been anywhere close to that.”
“Nobody’s going to be believed anymore. I can sit here and crow and say I’ve never done steroids or never done anything illegal from a standpoint of performance-enhancing drugs, but who’s going to believe me? The point’s well made, because we’re all guilty by association.”
