During his retirement speech Jeff Kent received a text message from back home in Texas. “Now you can smile,” it read.
The text came from Jeff Bagwell who was watching the retirement ceremony, … as he poured a margarita — parts tequila, lime juice and a dash of reflection.
“I started to get sentimental,” he said.
Reasons for leaving Houston
The dramatic walk-off home run was his final hit in Houston. Granted free agency, he departed for Los Angeles in the offseason, opening second base for Craig Biggio. Kent said Biggio, who played outfield in 2004 but lacked the skills to play there much longer, was part of the reason he decided to leave.
“He’d earned the right to be an Astro,” Kent said of Biggio. “I hadn’t. I just knew it was time to move on.”
Course he’s lying, it was about the money, but
Kent said the 2004 Astros remain the best group of players — on the field, in the clubhouse, away from baseball — he’s ever known. They represented the attitude Kent himself tried to personify: “You’re going to do a job? You’re going to do it right.”
