Wolf and Private Pyle broke out the whooping sticks on the Scrubs last night, going apeshit in the second shutout of the series sweep. Wolf dominated in his first complete game since 2004, punching out 8 against 2 walks, and sprinkling in just 6 hits allowed. Of his 128 pitches, 93 were of the strike variety.
For his part, Wigginton went berserk in the 5th, following a crisp Bourn single to right by crushing Dempster’s first pitch out into the drunks in left center, defying the wind in the process. Then in the bottom half, Cedeno tried to score from second on a Soriano single to left, but Pyle raised Charlene, took aim and fired a one-hop strike to the plate, where Q blocked Cedeno off the line while slapping a nice tag on his outside shoulder as he went by.
Ronny Cedeno is in a world of shit
The Good Guys were flashing leather all over the place, while the Cubs continued to not do themselves any favors. Next time the Astros botch a rundown, please see the top of the ninth last night as Exhibit A in defense of the It Could Have Been Worse argument. With two down and Newhan at third, Bourn got caught off of first on a pick-off, and proceeded to scamper around a bit. Newhan seized the chance to go for it, and Theriot was all limbs and bad timing as he flailed a dart into the ground near the general vicinity of home while the insurance run scooted across. That must have looked absolutely fucking fantastic from the bleachers – wish I could’ve been there. The fans sounded thrilled.
With the sweep, the Good Guys move to 9-6 on the campaign v. the Baby Bears, which is delicious. 16-6 is your new magic record to achieve the 90-win plateau, but that’s sort of besides the point – the Turdinals are right there, just 1 game ahead. And despite all of those synapses in your noggin that are now hard-wired into the understanding that postseason hopes are merely a peyote-fueled hallucination, well… there’s that wild card berth 6.5 games ahead with only 3 teams left in the way. Delusion springs eternal, and I’m a sucker for a good September collapse. Keep the dream alive, people.
