Corpus Christi hoped that the start of the second season would bring a better result than the first half. However, they have started 5-11 and their struggles continue. Here is how they rate among the league leaders in the Texas League.
The Good
The Hitters
Hooks hitters have some pop in their bats as they currently rank 2nd in slugging (.418), total bases, triples (21), doubles and third in hits, RBI, and runs.
Chris Johnson is 6th in average (.324) and in slugging (.523). He is 9th in OPS (.890). Johnson is 4th in doubles with 22.
Drew Sutton is tied for 7th in slugging (.497) and OPS (.891). Sutton is second in runs scored (58), forth in hits (97), first in doubles (26) and tied for 4th in total bases (157). He is also tied for 3rd in free passes (42).
Mitch Einertson is tied for 8th with 19 doubles.
Although promoted, Tommy Manzella’s 5 triples is still tied for second.
The Pitchers
The Hook’s pitchers don’t allow many extra base runners as they have the second fewest hit batters, and third fewest walks.
Brad James is tied for 8th with 6 wins.
Chance Douglas’ WHIP of 1.35 ties him for 9th best.
The Bad
The Hitters
The Hooks have the 3rd fewest stolen bases in the league with 57, however, they have been caught 27 times which is also the third lowest. Combined, their 84 attempts is (you guessed it) 3rd lowest.
Eli Iorg is tied for 9th in most times caught stealing (6) and he has struck out the 7th most times (70).
The PItchers
There is not much that isn’t bad about the Hooks pitching staff. They rank in the bottom 3 in all the categories except those listed above. They bring up the bottom in hits surrendered and team shutouts.
Chance Douglas, Sean Walker & Brian Bogusevic are all tied for 8th with 6 losses.
Walker has also giving up the most runs (67) and earned runs (62) in the league and is tied for 6th most hits surrendered (109).
Brian Bogusevic is tied for 9th most runs surrendered (56) and is in 9th all alone with (54). He has given up the second most HR (15).
Douglas has given up 12 dingers which ties him for 3rd most surrendered.
Brad James’ 7 plunked batters puts him in 7th in the league.
The Crowd
The Hooks’ fans are still supportive. The attendance ranks second in the league, averaging 6811 a night.
