Cheito let go. Abercrombie called up.

Posted on June 7, 2008 by pravata in News You Can Use

“We decided to ask waivers on Cheito Cruz Jr. for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release,” Astros manager Cecil Cooper announced following Friday’s game against St. Louis. “We’re going to call up Reggie Abercrombie.”

“..he had a tough job to fill this year being a bench player and I don’t think he’s done it that much and it was very difficult for him. He gave it his all. It just didn’t work…”

“I wanted it to go well, but nothing went well,” said Cruz Sr. …the job didn’t function for Cheito as a pinch hitter and he couldn’t do the job as a pinch hitter.”

The Astros obtained Abercrombie off waivers from the Marlins. Link During spring training we all had hopes for Abercrombie, he’s a good athlete, but lately Round Rock fans have had these impressions,

“in my opinion, Abercrombie is Jimerson all over again–see the ball…or not, flail at the ball.” Link

“It irks me to watch him “play.” Great talent with a five cent head on his shoulders. He would be gut and gilled by major league pitchers.” Link

“I was appalled by his attitude. He struck out and then just kind of shuffled back to the dugout, dogged it on a couple of plays in the outfield, and just seemed uninterested in being out there.” Link
