Standing up to the Goon, Wade on the first 10, Wiggy’s gutting it out, Roy predicts!

GM Ed Wade didn’t have a problem with Brandon Backe standing up for teammate J.R. Towles and not backing down from Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols during Wednesday’s confrontation in batting practice.

“I like competitiveness; I like fire,” Wade said. “You can probably take sides on both ends of it. I wasn’t crazy about the slide, but that’s part of the game. …I like when teammates stick up for one another. There’s no harm in any of it in my opinion. Here’s a guy that has enough belly to step up and say what he felt.”

The GM on the season so far

“…anybody that starts looking for those things at this stage of the season really hasn’t paid attention to the ups and downs this game presents every season,”

“I think we have pitched well,” Wade said. “The guys have kept us in just about every game. We’ve had a couple of games where they’ve added on some runs. Nobody’s going to have a clean slate at this point in time.”

“With the exception of Peavy’s game on opening day, we’ve probably had more than our share of chances to win those games, and a lot of that is because the pitching kept us in games long enough.”

Wigginton’s status
“The feedback that I’ve received from Dr. Mehlhoff is he’s not going to do any further damage to it,” Wade said. “There is a two- to four-week healing process. We’ll keep him active. He’s made progress and he’ll continue to make progress.”

“We know at the very least he’s able to pinch hit and pinch run, and we think if we got into a situation where Coop needed him to go out and play defense he could go out there and gut it out at this point in time.”

Roy answers the question of how he’s doing,
“You never know until you get out in the game and see what I’ve got,” said Oswalt,
