Wandy on the road. Sluggish Astros offense with Looper on the mound. Throw out your expectations friends, because yes, tonight was a beat-down but one the Good Guys® put on the sinking 3rdinals 18-1. Led by record-setting RBI man J.R. Towles, the Astros put up 23 hits, scored in 6 out of 9 innings, and batted around in the 7th and 8th innings.

First, J.R. Towles. To just say he was in the zone is like saying Chris Crocker is just a Britney fan. In 6 plate appearances he went 4-4 with 8 RBIS, Two doubles, a single, a BB and a HBP, plus a 2-run shot off of infielder Aaron Miles during mop-up. His 8 ribbies in the game bested the previous Astros record of 7 and immediately catapults him into the Astros starting line-up in ’08, if you happen to enjoy melting your brain with sports-talk radio.

J.R.’s night was not in a vacuum as every batter to go to the plate for the Astros got a hit, including Adam Everett who saw his first action since coming off the DL a few days ago. Anderson, Lee, Lamb, Ransom and Towles (sounds like a PI law firm) were a combined 15-21 with 14 runs scored.

Second, and to me, every bit as encouraging as J.R.’s effort, was Wandy finally putting it together on the road. Granted, Prince Albert broke a nail and sat this one out and we all know he would have accounted for at least 17 runs, but Wandy was brilliant. He was hitting his spots all night and despite a few rough patches, he went 8 strong on 88 pitches giving up only 1 in the 8th after the offense had already spotted him 16.

Overall, it’s good to see the young guys doing well. It’s as much as we can ask for as this lost season chugs it’s way back to the station. Now, let’s go out there and humiliate the Turdinals again in front of the BFiBs. Backe grinds again tomorrow night.
