Bogusevic called up, & Clark blows up
Greeneville when 1-3 this weekend. They split a series with the Burlington Royals and got swept in a double header by the best team in the league Elizabethton. Bryan Brown has had hits in 8 of the 11 games since he was signed as a middle infielder, but after his 3 errors in game two last night, he now has 8 in 11 games. Injuries to Andy Launier & Ebert Rosario have shuffled the infield. For the last week, Phillip Stringer has been at 3rd, Brown at SS and Timmy Johnson/Drew Anderson sharing time at 2B.
Tri Cities went 1-2 on the weekend. On Saturday, Bryan Hallberg learned about the importance of pitching ahead of hitters even though he took the loss.
Quote
“I was just looking at the chart and when the count was either 0-2 or 1-2, I struck out six of seven batters, so that definitely helped.”
In the Sunday win, Alberto Cruz hit a big home run. Alberto, who went by Cirilo last season is the nephew of Jose Cruz.
Sounds like Pete Rancot is using some reverse psychology…maybe:
Quote
“You can talk to them about being more aggressive and then they’ll take pitches, so it’s really hard to say how that goes,” Rancont said. “We just got some big base hits, I don’t know if whether we were more patient or not but it worked out for us.”
Whatever works Pete.
Lexington
The Legends saw there Friday night game suspended until Saturday. David Qualban restarted the game and went 7 innings of no hit ball for the victory.
Quote
The all-star, winning for the first time since July 6, struck out three, walked one, hit a batter and picked off one. Twelve outs came on grounders, five on flies. Said Qualben (8-7): “We’ve been working a lot on my control. My fastball’s been my biggest problem, leading to three or four or five walks a game. I had one (tonight). But it’s a pretty good feeling to know where the ball’s going.”
Qualben also picked of his 25th base runner of the season.
Casey Hudspeth who started the Friday night rain suspended game was sent to Salem on Saturday.
Salem:
The big news out of Salem was Brian Bogusovic’s move to Corpus Christi after getting roughed up in his last Salem start.
Quote
“They hit everything,” Bogusevic said quietly.
The Avs went 1-2 on the weekend. Sergio Perez is making his case for a call up with a strong showing on Sunday.
Quote
“I wasn’t babying the slider and my fastball was working,” Perez said. “It helps getting ahead of guys, too.”
I am seeing a trend here.
Some notes on Sammy Gervacio after Sunday’s game:
Quote
Then came closer Sammy Gervacio, who had been reluctant to the point of recalcitrance to throw his fastball early in the season, but has uncorked a couple of fireballs in his past two outings. In two perfect innings, Gervacio struck out four.
Gervacio’s fastball registered at 97 mph on the fallible scoreboard radar gun, and he admitted to hitting 96 or maybe 95 last year.
“He’s always had it,” Avalanche manager Jim Pankovits said. “He just doesn’t use it. … I think he’s starting to see the value of it. He’s got to have more than a couple of pitches to pitch at a higher level.”
Injury news from Salem: Ori to wear a brace from now own, Englebrook & Walker square off in a simulated game (“We didn’t keep score,” said Avalanche manager Jim Pankovits. It didn’t matter, just like in tee ball, both were winners”), and Sheldon done for the year after metal plate inserted into left hand.
Corpus Christi:
The Hooks were 0-3 for the weekend. They gave up 5 homers on Friday, tying a team record. On Saturday they struck out 14 times, and wasted a good performance from Paulino.. Then on Sunday, they lost their 6th straight game. They struck out 12 more times, went 0-13 with runners in scoring position and wasted a good performance by Brad James.
Based on these comments, I think Manager Clark is slightly frustrated:
Quote
“It’s just as (expletive) bad (as Saturday),” Hooks skipper Dave Clark said. “It’s a similar ballgame. We got good pitching and we’re just up there swinging to be (expletive) swinging. And that will be addressed — we’re going to take care of that (stuff).”…”We keep swinging at balls over our heads and in the dirt. You tell me (if it’s physical or mental). … You may see it with a couple of guys but when it’s the team? It’s blowing my (expletive) mind right now.”
Round Rock:
Friday’s game with Tuscon was canceled due to rain. They then lost two games to Las Vegas. Troy Patton started Saturday’s game. He gave up 3 runs in 5 innings. Chance Douglass took the loss in Sunday’s game. He has now winless in his last 8 starts.
