Daytime baseball, and Berkman not yet suspended. Sounds good to me. Little did I know.
Until Willy T led off the bottom of the first with a dinger. Fortunately, no horse with a pale rider followed, although Roy did proceed to load the bases, leading to fears of an “Oswalt inning” that was apparently yet to come.
Good guys responded with a run on a single-walk-PB-ground out combo platter. Ausmus followed with a weak ground ball, and Oswalt battled gamely but was unable to plate Ensberg.
Tied at 1-1, the BBGs determined to smite Josh Fogg for his hideous facial hair, best described as “vomitocious”. PENCE!!! had an infield single that pushed his average up to .377, followed by a Berkman dong of mammoth proportions. Lee followed by crushing one foul, but came back for the double, later followed by a Scott stand-up triple to make it 4-1.
The 4th could charitably be called “interesting” for PENCE!!!. The Franchise popped foul in a runner on 3rd, 1 out situation, and then sent a worm-burner wide of the plate trying to throw out Tulowitski for run 2 in the bottom of the frame.
Ausmus sent legions of ladies, and probably a not insignificant number of men, into a tizzy with a two-run double in the 5th. This rally featured Lee’s 100th career stolen base, which earned him an extra bag of oats and a sack of carrots.
Oswalt continued to alternate easy innings with trouble, allowing a two-run homer to Tulowitzki in the 6th.
The 7th and 8th innings were “highlighted” by an anticipated Lee-Corpas rematch that did not materialize as well as Do-Ray’s successful efforts to jinx Curt Schilling’s no hit bid.
And so, Dan Wheeler came on for the 9th. Matsui led off with a hustling double, and Matt Holliday smacked a single to cut it to 6-5. Helton then hit a soft fly to LF that kicked off Lee’s glove, putting runners on the corners. A walk to Atkins loaded the bases, and Luke made an absolutely wretched decision to throw to the plate on a sac fly that tied the game, putting a runner on third with one out. Tulowitzki managed to skim one under Everett’s glove for the winning run, and this shitty season continues with new and creative ways to lose baseball games.
Will Garner make all things old new again and give Lidge the closer’s role again? I’m guessing this will be the topic du jour tomorrow.
