Game Notes:

Other News and Notes:

(13-9, 1st–Texas League South)
Game Notes:
Matt Albers on the hill plus a fine offensive effort spells a 6-2 win over Springfield for the Hooks.
Albers goes to 3-1 on the year with another excellent pitching effort. The 23-year old Sugar Land native goes 6 innings, getting nicked for just a run on 4 hits. He did allow a season-high 4 walks but managed to limit the damage nicely, including inducing a DP ball with 2 on and none out in the first inning.
Jailen Peguero hurled a scoreless 9th, recording all the outs via whiffs while walking one.
RF Hunter Pence was 2-4 with a walk and a run-scoring double.
Josh Bonifay started at 2B and went deep for the 2nd game in a row (#5 on the year). Overall, he was 2-3 with a walk and drove in 2 while scoring twice.
CF Josh Anderson had a single and 2 RBIs in five trips.
C Kevin Davidson got his BA up to a season-high .333 with the 2-3 game. He walked once.
Other News and Notes:
(1) J.R. House sat out his 1st game of the season.
Quoting:
Manager Dave Clark on his starting pitcher:
“I like what I’ve seen from this kid. He’s got a chance to be a hell of a pitcher. Like I was telling someone earlier, he’s got that bulldog-type attitude. When he needs to turn it up another gear, he’s able to do that. That’s special when a guy is able to do that.”
(8-13, 4th-Carolina League Southern)
Game Notes:
When you get out-hit 14-6, odds are pretty good you’re not gonna win the ballgame as Salem found out in the 8-4 loss to Kinston on Friday night.
Jimmy Barthmaier went to the hill for the Avalanche and struggled badly, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks over 4 innings.
Robert Stiehl wasn’t fooling many out of the bullpen either as he got pounded for a couple of runs on 5 hits in just 1.1 IP.
CF Ervin Alcantara remained one of the few hot bats as he reached 3 times in 5 chances on two singles and a walk.
C Lou Santangelo had two hits, including a 2-run triple. But he also whiffed 3 times.
Other News and Notes:
(1) That’s Salem’s 5th straight loss. (2) Both of the Av’s triples this season belong to Santangelo. (3) Hitting streaks: make it an 11-gamer for Alcantara.
(12-9, 2nd–SAL Northern)
Game Notes:
Lexington puts together a rally in the bottom of the 9th (with some help from the other side) but it falls a run shy in the 3-2 loss to Hickory.
Lex had been blanked thru the 1st eight but 2B Eric King led off the final frame with a double (his 2nd hit of the game). A pair of flyouts by LF Mitch Einertson and C J.R. Towles sandwiched around a walk to 1B Ole Sheldon made it 2 men on but 2 men out. 2 WP’s scored one run and RF Eli Iorg then worked a free pass. After DH Ryan Reed singled in the 2nd run, SS Wlad Sutil reached on an error to load the bases. It was all on 3B Michael Thompson’s shoulders at that point, but he flied out to end the game.
King and Reed both had a couple of hits in the game.
Towles had a 2-bagger.
Starter Tip Fairchild was outstanding (7 IP 3 H 1 R 1 ER 2 W 8 K).
Although Fairchild got tagged with the loss, reliever Chris Blazek allowing a 2-run shot in the 8th was the difference-maker.
Quoting:
Manager Jack Lind on Fairchild:
“He threw very well. It was his second outing in a row after coming off the bus. I thought his curveball was excellent.”
