(9-9, 3rd–PCL American South)
Game Notes:
Day off.
(12-8, 1st–Texas League South)
Game Notes:
Oustanding pitching plus one swing of the bat and the Hooks are 4-1 winners over Springfield.
Mebbe Jared Sandberg finally decided to call his uncle for hitting tips (then again, with career .221/.251 majors/minors batting averages, the former scrubbie probably stopped taking Jared’s phone calls long ago). The Corpus 1B had been “hitting” just .139 until a couple of days ago when a pair of 2-baggers on Monday brought the average up to the dizzying heights of .163. With the bases loaded in the 3rd inning in this one and 2 outs, he hit a screamer over the left field fence at Whataburger Field.
Those 4 runs easily stood up due to the excellent starting pitching from ex-indy leaguer Josh Miller, who went 8 innings and allowed just 7 runners in the process while whiffing 9.
Jailen Peguero picked up save #5 with a scoreless/hitless 9th.
RF Hunter Pence singled, swiped a base (#4) and scored ahead of Sandberg’s longball. He also flashed some leather by making a diving catch of a sinking liner in the 6th inning, then throwing to first base to complete the DP.
C J.R. House started a new hitting streak by belting his 9th double of the year.
SS Ben Zobrist singled, walked and scored a run.
Other News and Notes:
(1) Miller notched his 5th decision in as many starts and, at 4-1, leads the Texas League in wins.
Quoting:
C Kevin Davidson from a couple of days ago, talking about Mitch Talbot’s recent outing:
“Early on we tried to establish the fastball, and they came out swinging, so we had to make adjustments to start coming a little soft early in the count. Once we did that, we got into the situation we wanted to be in. Mitch’s changeup is so good that they could know it’s coming and they still wouldn’t be able to hit it pretty hard. His changeup was nasty like it always is, and his slider was hard and cutting late. We just kept them off-balance.”
(8-10, T3rd-Carolina League Southern)
Game Notes:
Game suspended due to rain after 2 innings with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans up 1-0.
Other News and Notes:
(1) Game will be picked up Thursday in the top of the 3rd. The regularly-scheduled tilt will follow but it will now be a 7-inning affair.
(12-6, 1st–SAL Northern)
Game Notes:
Rained out, again.
Other News and Notes:
(1) One of the rained out games will be made up as part of a DH at Hickory Thursday. Because of the split season format in the South Atlantic League and because the Legends don’t visit Hickory again until the second half, the other rained out game will be made up on Saturday when the Crawdads visit the Legends.
